Importing VTS.VOB files to imovie via MPEG Streamclip 1.7

About a year ago, I converted all of my home movies from the past 20 years to DVD via an external DVD Burner attached directly to my camera/VHS.
I recently converted to a Mac from a PC (And have never been happier ) and discovered imovie. I have been converting my DVD's into imovie with MPEG Streamclip 1.7 with no problem until I started trying to import more recent movies (i.e. movies I put on DVD directly from the camera as opposed to from a VHS).
Both types of files are VTS.VOB files but the ones imported from a camera are "unsupported file types". Does anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it? Thanks!

No, I have never used ffmpegX for this, but if you need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • How do I import a .vob file into iMovie?

I friend sent me on a CD a video she took with a Sony camcorder, but I cannot import it into iMovie.  I've found several forms of software to convert the Sony file into a format iMovie will recognize, but which is the best one?  Is there a free option?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.

    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Import vob file to imovie no tone

I managed to import a .vob file from a disk to imovie, with the import/file function in imovie.  But there is no tone with the film.  When I check the vob file with MPEGstremclip of Quicktime , there is a tone.
Any help how to import the vob file with tone?

Use MPEG Streamclip for this, and you will have sound.
See detailed instructions at this link.

You might want to look at this one too.  Very easy to use and it doesn't require the Apple MPEG-2 playback component.

  • Can't import mp4/mov files into iMovie

I tried to create a new project by importing a .mp4 file from my account on Youtube. It copied the file to the event but didn't create a thumbnail. I did some research and I tried:
-Quitting imovie, changing the name of the event folder, then restarting imovie.
-Importing the .mp4 to a different event folder. Quitting/restarting.
At this point, the thumbnail for the newly imported movie appeared but the other videos that were previously (and successfully) thumbnailed in that event disappeared. I quit/restarted iMovie and all the thumbnails in that event were missing.
Here's what I've tried since then:
-Converting the .mp4 in Handbrake to .mp4 and then importing again. No luck.
-TRYING to convert the .mp4 to .mov in mpeg streamclip. I get an "Audio Decoding Error" when I attempt.
-Converting the .mp4 to .mov while disabling the sound in mpeg streamclip. IT WORKS and iMovie is able to import AND thumbnail.
So it'd appear that there's something wrong with the audio in the .mp4 file. Tried other .mp4 files and none of them were able to be converted or imported. Tried extracting the audio from the .mp4 file via MPEG streamclip and there's the same "Audio Decoding Error." The audio on the .mp4 file is AAC.
OK... It'd appear that I'd need to just import the .mov (no sound) along with the audio from the clip (I've used AudioHijack for that) to edit both in iMovie. The problem is that when I try to export it in iMovie I receive error codes.
This just all seems way, way more complicated that it needs to be. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I haven't tried yet or perhaps some video editing software (non FCE) worth looking into?
    Thanks

I was currently having the same issue trying to import into imovie. I have EyeTV Hybrid and when exporting a movie it asks you to select format in which to export it in. I selected m-peg4 and when I tried to import into imovie it was grayed in the finder, so what I did was return to the export feature in EyeTV and exported again under a different format - for imovie. It's exporting as we speak and I feel this will allow me to import properly now. Hope this helps.

  • How to a open a .VOB file in iMovies?

    Hi,
How do I get a movie into iMovie? I have a movie that is made as a .VOB and i do not know how to get it into iMovie to edit it.
    Any advice appreciated.
    H

ok thanks, I have tried that... but not found anything fitting.
I was more expecting an answer saying that i cant import a .VOB file and that i have to convert it first. Which i have tried but none of the software that i have downloaded have helped i got the ideas from other posts. But with no luck yet. Could be because i do not have the paid version of Quick Time (only the free version) that i seam to need to be able to use MPEG StreamClip I also tried another software called Flv Crunch but that one did not work at all and did not explain what was wrong.
So thankful for any suggestions to what i can do.

  • Imported PAL VOB files are misinterpreted as 540 pixels high

I'm trying to import PAL VOB files into an FCP 5.0.4 sequence and though the import and playback goes well, the files are wrongly reported as being 720x540 instead of 720x576, leaving me with unusable footage because the interlaced PAL video is rendered with horizontal stripes of alternating interlaced/fused fields.
The only way to restore some degree of quality to the footage is to apply an anti-flicker filter at maximum strength, but it's a crummy solution considering the video height should have been properly interpreted in the first place.
Could someone please tell me how I can import these vob files with their proper dimensions?
    Thanks for any help.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   FCP 5.0.4

    download MPEG Streamclip
open the vob file in MPEG streamclip and use File > Export to Quicktime to convert it to DV PAL (or whatever codec you are using)
    Compressor: Apple DV PAL
    Quality: 85% (or higher)
    Sound: Uncompressed
    Frame Size: 720 X 576 (DV-PAL)
    Field Dominance: Lower Field First
then click the "Make Movie: button
... import the coverted file into FCP

  • Importation of VOB files into FCP

I have been importing .VOB file into FCP on a Mac Pro 8 core without any problems. Last week I bought a MacBookPro 3.06 Core 2 Duo and I reinstalled the OS and used system migration to import the programs from my Mac Pro.
The MacBookPro will NOT open import the VOB file into FCP. Apple support said that VOB files are not supported. They suggested the power difference between the two computers allowed import in one and not the other. This does not make sense to me.
    Any thought from the experts?

I've never known any version of FCP to work with VOB files natively or otherwise. Most people use MPEG Streamclip to convert to the format that will match their FCP Sequence settings.

  • When i import a movie file into iMovie,it somehow reverts to the shortened file of the same name that i previously had used

I'm trying to import a movie file into imovie that I know is 3hr16mins long but when it's finished importing, all I have in the programme is the heavily edited 51mins that i used in a previous project (using the same file),5 years ago. How can I stop iMovie from reverting back or could the much longer file be there and I have incorrect settings so I can't see it all?

Are these files MPEG compressed files? iMovie can not deal with the multiplexed audio of those files. For suggestions on how to get them right start here...
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6030.shtml
And if your files are not MPEGs, some of the suggestions on that page may still do what you need done.

  • Different Audio Tracks when you import DVD VOB Files

I imported some vob files from a dvd and it only gives me the first audio track in premiere but i need the 2nd audio track. How do i tell premiere i only want the 2nd track?

If there is no way to get the 2nd audio track then i would consider that to be a bug that hopefully Adobe can fix in next patch.
Ideally when you import a vob fileset premiere should automatically drop all the audio tracks into the timeline, not just the first one.
Don't use a DVD, plain and simple. The fact that we can edit this stuff at all is just a handy shortcut that works most of the time. I suspect that, given the nature of the material and the far greater precedence for native editing of professional camera sources, this is about as good as its going to get. You can certainly report it as a bug (which its not) or request it as a feature, but I sincerely doubt that this would be given a great deal of priority.
I'm not saying this just to be a jerky naysayer: the fact is that there is limited time and resources that go into development of each point release and each full version, and the things that benefit the most people have the greater likelihood of being fixed or included. I'd be surprised if even 1% of Premiere users needed this functionality. Believe me--I've wanted dozens of things that I know won't ever make it into the program, simply because they won't benefit many people. But make a feature request and see what happens...
wow??  what a terrible, mean, and unnecessary negative response?  "jerky naysayer" ??  never heard that term, but it sounds accurate.
Thats like walking up to someone and saying "i dont mean to be cruel, but your fat and ugly"
anyways, not sure what your point is, other than you have a crystal ball that tells you less than 1% of the premiere users in the world ever need to grab a b-roll from a dvd and i think i could find plenty of people who would disagree with you. I have been doing digital video editing for 20 years and been using premiere for about 15 years now i think since it first came out. I work at a tv station with lots of other video editors and we have all needed to pull a clips off dvd's many times in our lives. Im sorry that i dont have an XDCAM HD video tape of the first moon launch to capture, so for now i have to grab a clip from a dvd.
Thanks for your attempted "help" but i'd rather you not hiijack my thread by negating my questions and requests. My company has purchased probably over a million dollars in adobe software licenses over the years and there is nothing wrong with my opinions and requests.
    thanks

  • Importing FCP 4 files into iMovie 4

Can this be done? I captured a lot of video to FCP 4, but the learning curve is more time intensive than I thought. Would now like to do the project in iMovie 4. Can I import the FCP files into iMovie, and if so, how is this done. BTW, I'm talking about nine hours of video.

    "Good point."
... and a well known for years, up to iM 4.... did some research on that, and the reason I found was the file system of System8 (eight!)....- so, using the 4th version of that wonderful app with 10.3 was limited by the file management of the pre-pre-version of the system ....

  • Import of VOB files from DVD are cropped to 540x480, instead of maintaining native full raster of 720x480.

When I import the VOB files from a DVD, they are automatically cropped to 540x480, which strangely is 9:8 aspect ratio, instead of maintaining native full raster of 720x480. Inside of Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Streamclip, and DVD-Lab Pro, the DVD's VOB files open with the correct aspect ratio, and the resolution is indicated to be 720x480.

The answer is to move to Pro Tools Adobe is not concerned with you anymore. They are only concerned with their profits.

  • HD MOVs converted to HD AVIs via mpeg streamclips not pc compatible?

This is driving me crazy. You'd think it was the most basic thing but I can't get any info on why the HD AVIs created via Mpeg Streamclip will not play on my clients PC. He has the appropriate codex but the things won't play at all. The same HD MOVs i'm trying to convert to HD AVI play fine on his PC when I convert using Quicktime Pro but I can only get SD resolution on my created AVIs using quicktime. If anyone can tell me what is the best way to convert a HD MOV to a pc compatible HD AVI format that would be a wonderful thing. Please help
    thanks

What codec are these MOVs in originally? If it is DVCPRO HD then as far as I know the only computers that have that codec on it are ones with FCP installed on them. Does your final file have to be an AVI or can it be something else?
