Importing with canon 5d markii

Being new to mac and considering this camera, can anyone comment on whether or not the importing is user friendly

It just occurred to me, after taping over the contacts, that I should also try something else: zoom lenses usually change their aperture while zooming from wide to distant (e.g; from, say, f3.5 down to f5.6) if set to their maximum, wide-open, aperture. So perhaps setting the lens' maximum aperture to be a bit less than its max at its distant setting (..e.g; setting it to, say, f6.3 or similar..) might prevent the aperture changing during a zoom. But then again, maybe it wouldn't ..I'll try it today and see if that makes any difference. Anyway, tape-over-the-contacts certainly fixes the problem.
(..The 5D MkII changes its ASA/ISO 'sensitivity' as it deems necessary before or during video shooting, so maybe having the aperture iris electrically connected, allowing the camera to adjust the iris during a zoom (..it balances ISO with aperture..) will always give jerky video.. I'll find out later today..)
That lens was a..
Tamron 28mm-300mm ..similar to, but much smaller and lighter than..!
Canon's own 28mm-300mm. It's not so eye-searingly sharp as Canon's, and is 'softer' and less contrasty, and has more 'flare' than Canon's superb 28mm-300mm ..but the differences aren't so apparent in a movie as they are in still shots ..which you might stare at for several minutes, so discovering the lens' shortcomings.
I'll post a bit of a beach zoom later; you'll see how a great shot was spoiled by having the movie jerk every few seconds when the camera made adjustments to the lens. Meanwhile, I've just had my (PAL, 25fps) movie camera adjusted so that it shoots 30fps too ..so that I can now mix'n'match video shot with that 5D along with HDV video material (..and smoother zooms!) shot with a camcorder. The camcorder's zoom lens is easier to control (..able to provide very slow, 'ease-in' and 'ease-out' zooms..) but the 5D allows any type of Canon-fit SLR lens (..from super-wide to super-long..) to be used for shooting video.

  • 6.0.2 freezes when importing with canon 5d

Hi, I'm using The latest version of Iphoto 6.0.2 with an intel Mini. The computer locks up every time i try to import photos from my 5d. It always freezes about half way through the import. I've used different memory cards, a card reader, and even hooked it up to the USB port, it doesn't matter, it still freezes. The latest thing i tried was to delete the album.xml file and restart. That didn't do it either. The weird thing is that I have zero problems importing with my 20D. I can get around the problem by copying the photos to my Dell laptop, put them on a USB memory stick and then import them into iphoto with success. Any ideas? I have a feeling it has something to do with the canon software that i installed and then removed because i didn't like it. Could it be a conflict between i photo and the canon software? How do I make sure I remove all the canon crap?

    Foxfile:
I don't think it's due top the software unless it's operating on the files as you import. Are you shooting RAW and the accompanying jpg? I've had zero experience with RAW but try the following:
1 - create a new, fresh library and then see if you can import into it. If not then it's an account issue. If the new library works then it's
2 - log into another account and see if the photos will work there. If so then it's your primary account that is having trouble.
Also check some of the options in the camera about file types, compatibility, etc. There may be something in there that can be changed so make them work. I'm guessing since I don't have a camera that shoots raw.

  • Importing with canon ZR100

I am trying to import into iMovie with my Canon ZR100 miniDV camcorder. I think part of the problem is that my help file seems to be giving me info on iMovie HD 6 and I am using iMovie 4. I can control the camcorder from iMovie fine and I can see the movie and hear audio. The problem is that the help file says that there should be an import button above the play button in iMovie and there is nothing there in my app and I can't find or see anything obvious that would be for importing. Maybe someone can just direct me to some sort of manual for iMovie 4 or if you do have some insight that would be great.

there's a little "switch", scissors and camera under your main screen...

  • Double import with Canon cam

    Hello
I found out that if I import my pictures from the Canon cam into iPhoto, they ALL get imported twice: into iPhoto library AND into 'my pictures'. Seems to be that the installed Canon software somehow causes this to happen automatically. From a Minolta it does not happen.
Possibly somebody made the same experience? I would like to let the Canon software on my Mac because some times it is helpful, but do not like all pics imported twice.
    Thanks!

In case somebody comes across this thread: I could solve the problem.
In the Canon download software "Camera Windows" I checked under > Download Options > "Images whose transfer settings were specified with the camera".

  • Tethered shooting with Canon 1Ds MarkII?

I am curious if Lightroom allows for tethered shooting. The Canon software leaves much to be desired and Capture One Pro is a bit steep at $399. I'd like to trash the Canon software and replace it with something more efficient.

Lightroom3 has 2 options to tether directly or
    through the EOS Utility software.

  • Working with Canon 5D MarkII H.264 Footage in Final Cut Studio - 5, Not 6

I'm new to this whole posting thing, but I'm hoping I can get some help. I'm just now starting to try to edit video footage from my Canon 5D Mark II in Final Cut, but I do not have FCP6, I have FCP5. I'm starting to realize this may be a problem, as it does not seem to have any sort of 1080 30p setting for video.
So...what I've done so far is to down convert to 720 p30 (I guess) using MPEG Streamclip, and then work with it that way. But I'm losing a lot of nice information, right? (Wrong?)
Obviously, I'm very new to the whole HD thing, so please go easy on me. I'm just hoping that there is some way that I can edit the lovely 1080 30p footage in Final Cut Studio Version 5, and then output a looped 10 minute video via DVD Studio Pro.
    Anyone??
    I appreciate any guidance.
    - dawn

Strangely, that is just not one of the options that shows up for me - I get the huge list, but no 1080p 30. In fact, no 30p anywhere to be found except for the 720 p30.
I wonder if there is something I can download?
I keep running into posts telling me I have to have version 6 - there MUST be something I can do in 5!! I hope, I hope...

  • Trouble Importing with Canon Camera

I am trying to import some photos from a friend's camera and when I plug in the camera with iphoto open I get the spinning rainbow circle for a while and then nothing. I can't figure out what's happening and why the photos aren't importing. I've tried 2 USB ports and the same thing happens. Any suggestions?

Can you import them without any application open?

  • Automatic Import with Canon ZR45

I love the Automatic import feature in iMovie 08. But it has only worked once. A few days ago I tried it out for the first time and it worked fine. Rewound the tape, captured all of the content and stopped.
I've tried it several times since then and it keeps flashing Disconnected No Tape and flipping back to Manual mode. I can do manual capture and it works fine, but I have to sit by the computer to stop it at the end of the tape.
I've tried all the basics, rebooted Mac, camera, diff. firewire cable, etc. But it just won't let me switch to automatic. Actually, if I catch it quickly when I first power on the cam I can switch it to auto, but after a few seconds it flips back to manual.
Thanks in advance if you have any ideas.
    ...Sam

Answered my own question. There is a AV Mode setting on the camera that allows it to encode analog signals so that you can import from an old analog camcorder or vcr. I was using that feature before. When I turned it off iMovie can control the camera just fine now. I'm not sure how it ever successfully did the first movie. I had had that setting on from the beginning.

  • Import failed with canon 6d footage after latest update

After I updated to Final Cut X 10.0.8, I've been getting "Import Failed" messages during the import process when taking in footage from my Canon 6D
The import process also seems to be going very slow (slower than usual)
I've tried duplicating the SD card locally on the hard drive and re-importing, but have gotten the same results.
If I click OK on the error dialogue box, the import will continue. but another box will pop up every 5 to 10 minutes or so
    Any ideas?

Hey Russ, it actually works fine for me too the few times I've used it but I point it out as a common denominator with people who have trouble importing that way. Separating the .mov files into their own folder eliminates the camera and card reader, both much slower than just transfering files from a connected drive. But I'm doing newspaper video with Canon DSLRs - including 5D3 video, similar to 6D - almost daily where speed is of the essence and this is by far the most foolproof method I've come across.

  • Canon UFR with Canon IR C2550

My office has a canon IR C2550 and our tech support is fairly useless, hoping to get some help from you all.
Does anyone have any idea what error code -170 would be for the canon UFR, i.e. no matter what driver I try I get "an error occurred: -170" anytime I try to print.
The machine has job accounting, and I get prompted for the codes. I also seem to be seeing the machine since I can get stats (ink, etc.)

    Hi,
We have the exact same problem with a few 10.6.2/3 machines and a Canon MF9170 using UFRII 2.06 driver. Out of 10 identical iMacs all built with the same image (but with different user accounts imported) 3 machines cannot print to this printer, giving "an error occurred: -170" immediately.
We have contacted Apple and Canon, tried resetting the print system, updating the driver, adding, removing, rebooting, deleting /library/printers/canon, reinstalling etc. all to no avail. Unfortunately cannot find another driver that works for this printer either. We are not using job accounting on any machines.
I've had multiple support calls with Canon to ask them what the error code -170 means, or any clue at all what might be causing it, but they just escalate the case and then close it.
If you ever find a solution we'd love to know what it was! Perhaps buy a non-Canon printer instead...

  • Raw file rendering problems with Canon EOS 5D in Aperture 3

Since upgrading to Aperture 3, I have had serious problems with the rendering of Canon EOS 5D (not Mark II/III) RAW files. With Aperture 2, both the preview and full-sized images looked basically the same as the original images as displayed on the camera's display, without any adjustments.
With Aperture 3, each preview images initially look fine after import, but when Aperture re-renders it from the RAW file (e.g. when displaying the full-size image), the colors are drastically intensified, and the hue is shifted generally towards green/blue. I've checked the RAW Fine Tuning, and it is set to the defaults. If I turn the default RAW Fine Tuning settings all the way down, the image is still not at all like the preview from the camera - it becomes much darker and stays too blue/green, with washed-out colors.
A friend with a Canon EOS 5D MkII also recently upgraded her Mac from Aperture 2 to 3, and hasn't experienced any problems. We've tried importing RAW files from my (non-MkII) camera to her Mac (with the default RAW Fine Tuning settings), and get the same results as with my own Mac (i.e. strange colors), so the problem seems to be related to the camera model.
I've also noticed that scanned greyscale tiff images (including images that were originally imported under Aperture 2) are changed when first displayed by Aperture 3 - they become darker and more contrasty, with lots of information lost in the shadow areas.
I've also tried removing Aperture preferences, Aperture itself, and re-installing from download, with no change in the problem. (Aperture is the current latest version, 3.3.2.)
    Has anyone experienced similar problems?

    I'm having the same problem.
iMac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 and Aperture 3.3.2.  Workflow is importing through Canon's DPP and then using referenced images in Aperture.  The images look great in LR4, or Canon's DPP but are flat and dingy in Aperture.
There's a free preset that goes part way to fixing it at http://theapertureblog.com/2011/02/10/my-aperture-workflow-for-working-with-cano n-5d-mark-ii-files/
but as good as this fix is, it doesn't quite do the trick. [not being a hater, and not saying I can do better]
    I just got back from shoooting 1,500 images with a 5DMii and a T2i using Canon 24-105L IS, 70-200 2.8L, 50 1.8 and a Sigma 120-400 and the T2i images are not just better, they're in a different league.
I've tried shooting in Faithful, Neutral and also toggling these presets in different ways and still can't get Aperture to match what I see on the camera's screen or in other Apps.  I love the interface and DB of Aperture, but what's the point of using it if it doesn't produce and awesome image in the end?

  • Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 to Final Cut Pro

Hey there, I have been trying to import to final cut with some success. Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 from my sd card.
    I used the easy setup.
    FORMAT HD
USE HDV APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC 1080I60
I go to log and transfer select the clips I need and click add to que.
So perfect there are my clips in my bin, I bring them to my timeline and a green line appears above my video, uugggggh. I know this is a rendering issue but why.
Please help does anyone know why this is happening.
This is very frustrating, I have been trying to read the other discussions I didn't see anything on it let alone the info on the net, trying different things just not working for me.
    Thanks Gang

Your camera records AVCHD. Convert to prores 422 or prores 422(LT) on log and transfer and make sure your sequence matchs your footage.

  • Lightroom 4.2 stopped mid way through tethering with Canon 1DX.  any suggestions?

Lightroom 4.2 stopped mid way through tethering with Canon 1DX.  Top left corner bar read still transferring, but all images had already been viewed in preview of tether and i had given it an etxra 15 minutes to contine transferring until I rebooted everything.  I restarted several times while client waited, but LR would no longer accept tethered images any longer.  Any suggestions?

Well, the EOS Utility was incompatable with OSX for quite awhile and once LR appeared to support tethering, I migrated away from it. Until yesterday.
The workflow is still wonky, if you want to use LR for display/printing (which I do), but it's doable.
There are tutorials online, I remember finding them (sorry no links) years ago.
The main bugaboo is creating the appropriate folders in the right order. Both LR and EOS Utility are really picky about those folders (have to be empty, both apps picky about that, so you'll probably have to manually empty after firing off a couple of test images).
I always forget how I did it, but last night's kind of fresh in my mind — I think the order that worked for me was:
create a destination folder in EOS Utility
in LR's auto-import settings, choose the step #1 folder as the watched folder (you've got to do this before putting a single thing in that folder, which will likely mean manually tossing some test images, because if you don't LR will ***** at you that the folder must be empty.)
below that in the same window, create a Destination folder. (don't know why this is necessary, but it is)
Finally, I suggest doing all this in one parent folder and creating a shortcut to that folder somewhere very convenient so that you want drive yourself crazy in the inevitable opening, closing and reopening of these folders, trying to troubleshoot. :-)

  • Cannot import from Canon Digital Camera

I've recently bought a Canon SX20IS and it has HD video recording capability.
I've recorded several videos and I cannot import the videos. I've tried importing it manually (from wherever I've saved it, be it: iPhoto, my documents, etc). The videos are saved as .mov files and can play easily in Quicktime. They also save into the iPhoto library easily enough.
iMovie begins to imports. Starting (everytime) importing fast, 3 minutes...2 minutes... then it slows down when it reaches the 1/4 done mark and starts going up (i.e.) 3 minutes... 4 minutes... 7 minutes...30 minutes... 47 minutes... about an hour... 2 hours... and I've left in on several occasions for more than an hour and yet it's still in the same place. When I force quit the application, there seems to be no "not responding" message correlating to iMovie. So I do not understand why it can't import it.
An example of what I've been trying to import is a 2minute 45 second long clip, 485.3MB
PLEASE help, it's driving me INSANE!

I don't believe this to be a "temporary solution" at all. I do this routinely, except that I use Bridge for doing the download/import. I then import the files to Aperture. The up side, in my mind, is that I now have 2 copies of each image, in two different places and I always know where the original is.
    Come on APPLE!
I think there are lots of other issues Apple could improve. For instance, making it easy to re-save an image once edited in Photoshop back to Aperture.
