Importing word doc into InDesign

I am trying to find the best way to get about 250 word pages into 250 InDesign pages.
Currently I am assuming I have to copy/paste each page by hand. Is there a way to set page breaks in word and have them relate to pages in InDesign? I know that I can Find/Change attributes to batch/automatically apply styles to imported text. My major issue is that each InDesign page has a header, sub header, then 4 - 5 paragraphs with inline headers, so there is a lot of formatting.

You have to put your custom frame on you master A page. Open your pages pallet. select the master page, create you custom frames on the master page. Select the first frame, click on the little blue box the bottom right the hover you curser over inside the  next frame and it will turn into a chain link icon. Click.
This will link the two frames together over the left and right pages.
Now double click on page one in your page pallet. You'll see the dotted frame which means that it on you master page. If you don't? then got to menu View>show frame edges.
Next
File> place select the word file
your curser will load with the word file, hover your curser inside the dotted blue frame you just made on page 1 hold down your shift and click

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    Hello,
    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.
    Can someone help?

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?

    double click that and if u see the folder notes then drag your doc into that
    it will work

  • Importing Word doc into Previously Existing Project Corrupts Related Topics

    Hi,
    I had a few extra topics that I documented in a Word document
    and imported that document into an existing HTML Help project in
    RoboHelp. After doing this, it used the CSS file called by the new
    folder it added for those new topics (based on the name of the
    imported word doc) and when I look at topics in WYSIWIG, the text
    on them is Design_Time Con. (I used the text only style of related
    topics). When I select the related topic button in WYSIWIG and view
    the popup, the menu choice for properties is deactivated so I can't
    even edit the topics in them. And, when I try to add a new related
    topic, it looks the same "corrupted" way.
    What am I going to do? Is there are project setting that is
    pointing to the wrong directory? What can I do to save my related
    topics. I have over 400 topics all with related topics buttons and
    each has an average of 6-8 related topics listed.

    P.S. I also tried creating a new project and importing the
    htm files into it but it is doing the same thing.

  • Nd suggestion for importing Word doc into Pages template....

    I have a rather lengthy Word file that I want to import into Pages using one of its templates (Travel Journal). Is there a way to import the Word file directly into this template?
    I know you can import a Word doc into Pages but once you do that, you have to do the designing from scratch (or at least that what it looks like you have to do).
    I like the Travel Journal template and wanted to use that for my Word doc. Any suggestions for getting my Word doc into this template, without having to cut and paste each section?
    I like the template because of the varied page layout options and I don't want to have to recreate from scratch!
    Help!

    Hello Debbie,
    as I know there is no way to get what you want. I think you have to load the Word document into Pages and than you have to copy and paste all the text and media objects into the Pages template.

  • Importing multiple Word docs into InDesign

    Hi there
    Is it possible to import multiple Word documents into a single InDesign text frame all at once?
    I have 20 files that all flow sequentially so was wondering if -- by selecting them all in Place window -- they would all be brought in one after the other, without each one creating its own new text frame.
    Any help gratefully received.

    I use the script, below, for that. It's a bit scruffy, it should be tarted up. But it works fine. When you start it you type a path/file mask, using the formats illustrated in the dialog.
    It sets a few import preferences, these are the only ones I'm interested in. But it'll pick up the other options from their current settings.

    The way you move word dodument s into InDesign is by using File > Place..., selecting the word file in the dialog, chooing import options if you like, and clicking the cursor in the InDesign document. How you've set upt he ID file will have a lot to so with wher you should click and whether or not you should be also pressing the Shift key to autoflow.
    It's quite clear you have no idea how InDesign works, so before you get into trouble you should look around for some books or tutorials, and try reading the help files. One of the best books out there for new users is Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide to InDesign.

  • Issues with importing word docs into robohelp 10

    I currently have an issue when I try to import a 'saved as: 97-2003' or 'MS Word' doc or docx into Robohelp 10, I receive the following error:
    Any assistance with this would be appreciated.
    In the meantime I've been converting everything from a doc/docx format to a pdf and then importing.
    However, it would be nice to know why I can't perform the task as I have shared
    PS...
    With regards to the error statement: "Please install Microsoft Word 2000 or newer"? I have Microsoft Office 2013 installed (and not the student or home version). "I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed", so to speak but I would think that Word 2013 would pacify the requirement of MS Word 2000 or newer...?

    The message is wrong in terms of the version specified. It is correct though that you do not have a supported version as Word 2013 is not supported.
    Subject to licencing, you can have both 2010 and 2013 installed, then run 2010 before doing anything where Rh needs to talk to Word.

  • Importing WORD doc into FM12

    When importing a WORD doc with multichapters into FM12,  do I need to seperate the WORD doc according to the chapters first then do the importing?

    I would say it depends:
    If your word document satisfies any or all of these conditions:
    1. It is short
    2. It utilizes few fonts
    3. It does not contain graphics with text flowing around them
    4. It has a few basic styles
    5. It is "clean": no spurious font usage, no "bleeding italic"
    then by all means, open it in FM
    Otherwise, you might want to follow the process below. In my case, I have a novel I wrote in Word. It's 147,000 words long, uses several fonts and images. I opened the file into FM and it was not able to process it appropriately. Luckily, no harm was done but I'd recommend you do backup your word file first.
    Here is what I did:
    1. I created an FM template from scratch.
    2. I used my template to import the first chapter only. In so doing, I refined the various tags ( I am assuming you are importing you word document as an unstructured framemaker doc) and created a few character tags such as "emphasis" for fragments which are emphasized and "thought" for fragments of text representing thoughts in characters' heads. These character tags are important for the editing process because by changing say the color or the size of the font for these characters tag, I can quickly highlight them and verify them. In the end, there was no portion of my text that did not have an explicitly assigned character tag, which is truly important for the quality of the text.
    3. I ran a find on "character override". Since my novel was being edited by two editors, there were quite a few overridden punctuation utilizing the wrong font, or face or size.
    4. I would then refresh the book to ensure the chapter numbering and page numbering was working correctly.
    5. Once I was satisfied with a chapter, I would import the tags back into the template and move on to the next.
    I am skipping the work I did on the preamble (first and second titles, copyright notice, acknowledgment, dedication, table of content, maps) and postamble (glossary and "about the author") but the process was the same.
    This process took me about two days to complete. In the end, I ended up with the following
    1. A robust template I can use for the successive books I am publishing
    2. A cleaner text, easier to typeset and check
    3. A greater understanding of the way FM works.

  • How to 'Paste' a Word doc into InDesign and keep all of the settings?

    I've set up styles in the Word doc, that I was hoping would transfer into InDesign, once pasted. The Word doc is very large, and has hundreds of jpegs placed within it. My issue is that once it is pasted, the images are overlapping the text above it, as well as others.
    How would I rectify this? ...Is this a Word settings problem, or a transferring/'pasting' problem?

    Thank you M, but I believe I figured it out:
    I made styles in Word to make things a bit simpler when changing large sections of text, so within the settings of the images style select Format>Paragraph>Line and Page Breaks. Under 'Textbox Options' the Tight wrap defaults to 'None' - Select 'All'.
    When the file is placed into InDesign, the images don't overlap, and are exactly where they need to be.

  • Can't Import Word docs into RH9

    Each time I try importing a Word document into RH9 I get an error message stating the the Import session failed (0x80004005). Word 2010 is installed on my machine. Any clues what could be causing this issue?

    You can't use Ctrl V you have to click the camera Icon then browse to the image file and click insert image.

  • Unable to copy material or import Word Doc into RoboHelp 9 (Suite 3)?

    I had this problem for awhile until I discovered that I was trying to import material from older word documents. Just opening the word doc in Office 10, saving it as a docx file before trying to copy and paste cleared this up. Pictures and text come across easily in RoboHelp 9 and Photoshop now.
    PDF files are hit and miss. I think it may be due to the same type of problem... earlier version creation on the part of the PDF. sometimes they import great, just like they look in PDF format, sometimes they don't are are a big mess. I have had to copy and paste sections, recreating the look of the original pdf in a RoboHelp page.
    Backwards compatability seems to be an issue that keeps cropping up in this suite... or am I doing something wrong, missed a simple control somewhere?

    I think you mean Office 2010. Office 10 is Office 2002,
    I'm not quite clear whether you mean import in the sense of File > Import or copy and paste as you refer to both. File > Import from older versions has not given me any problems. Cut and paste is not something I do much of but again it hasn't given me problems.

  • Trouble importing accurate versions of Word docs into InDesign CC

    HELP! Sometimes when I import a word document sent to me by a client, InDesign imports an older version of that word document. If I open the document they sent me in Word and compare it to the text that imports from the same document, it's sometimes a different version? It seems to import an older, un-edited version of the document. Has anyone experienced this? Why is that happening, How can I fix it? It seems to just be one client but has happened a few times.

    Make sure to open the track changes dialog and accept the changes, then do a Save As to rewrite the file.

    Can RH10 import a Word document and auto split the headers into separate topics? In RH7, this capability was available, but I'm not seeing it in RH10.
