Importing XP Comments Field into Lightroom 3.3

I have a large number of jpg's I have tagged, commented, and added subject and title too.  All tagging has been done in windows with most done in vista and windows 7.  I recently got Lightroom and am importing the existing files.  The tags come through as keywords fine, but the other data does not appear to import.  I checked and see the comments are stored in the XP Comments field in the exif structure.  I saw some old posts about problems importing certain data and where it is mapped within Lightroom.  Is there any easy way to bring this data across? Am I missing something?  this seems like a pretty basic function.
Thanks

The problem is twofold: where in the metadata these "comments" are stored, and how Lightroom might display this information.
There are no really good defined places for general comments in the current metadata definitions used by image vendors.  The ones that do exist are abused in a great number of ways.  However, you could see which of these is displayed in Lr (I think one of the IPTC fields might be) and process the image files to copy the comments to this field. I'd use a tool like EXIFTool to do this, make sure you save metadata to the file (or sidecar) and then read it back in again once you have finished tweaking it outside of Lightroom.

  • How to import Hasselblad fff files into Lightroom 5 keeping 16bit?

I have a problem importing Hasselblad fff files into Lightroom 5. I have seen articles that I should change them into DNG by Phocus.
When a photo is converted into DNG file it seems that it becomes 8 bit when I open in photoshop. Since I am shooting with RAW, I'D like to keep it
in 16 bit. Am I making sense? Or I am missing some information regarding DNG and 8bit business?
Please teach me the best way.

If opening directly from LR into Photoshop check your pref settings.
Edit >> Preferences >> External Editing (Lightroom >> Preferences >> External Editing on Mac OSX)
The usual choice is to render a 16 bit tiff or PSD file. Make sure it’s not incorrectly set to 8 bit.

  • Import GPS metadata info into Lightroom

How do I import GPS metadata info into Lightroom from either my camera or from disk?  I'm using lightroom 3.2.  It shows up in CS5 Bridge, why not in Lightroom?
    oracle 52

I downloaded the plug-in and used the metadata file preset for geo-tagging plus all the others in Adobe Lightroom 3 prior to "import" using the "Add" submenu.  Only under the geo-tagging preset in Metadata did I see the "labels" of latitude, longitude, etc.  However, the metadata for each of the photos for these labels were blank.  Yet, when viewing these photos on Nikon VX from which the photos was imported shows the correct GPS coordinates.  Why isn't this data being displayed in Lightroom as it appears from the original file on my hard drive?

  • How can I import an Aperture Catalog into Lightroom and retain the RAW file as well as the files with the edits?

I have several catalogs in Aperture that I would like to import to Lightroom 5 and I want to retain the original RAW files as well as the files with the edits.  How can I do this?

Well, you can bring in the raw file (without edits), and you can bring in a rendered RGB file (e.g. jpeg or tiff) with edits baked in, but what you CAN'T do is bring in a raw file, with the non-destructive Aperture edits, and have Lr translate those Aperture edits into Lightroom edits.
Put another way: no raw converter/editor can understand the edits of any other raw converter/editor. So, you have to work with a rendered version, and/or re-edit from scratch in a new raw converter/editor.
PS - it would be feasible to write a rough translator which approximated raw edits in one world into edits in another, but such does not exist yet for Aperture -> Lightroom, that I know of.

  • Importing data from Picasa into Lightroom?

    Hello,
I've been using Picasa as my main photography program for the last couple of years. Now I have many thousands of RAW pictures with labels and tweaks (brightness, contrast, cropping, etc).
I'd like to import all of that data into Lightroom. Is there a way to do that? Even if there isn't an official way, I know the Picasa data is very open (ini files). Maybe there's a user-created script to do the conversion?
Any pointers appreciated because I'd really like to switch over, but I can't afford to lose all that data.
    Cheers.
    --Noel

I know of none, but I have to warn you that while Picasa is relatively open, it does no color management whatsoever (shame on you google - very disappointing) and any edits you did to brightness and such are likely to be useless in any properly color-managed app. Regarding the labels, which are probably relevant, there is a chance that picasa can export the industry standard and open format xmp sidecar files. Perhaps a little googling will turn up some tips.

  • Work-around to import Elements 7 catalog into Lightroom 2

I know I can't import an Elements 7 catalog into Lightroom 2 because they were released at nearly the same time.  But I want to do it anyway.  What is the best workaround?

You can write the PSE metadata (captions, tags, GPS locations) to the files with psedbtool. When you import the photos into Lightroom, this data will be read into the Lightroom catalog.
You will lose PSE Notes, version sets, stacks, albums, creations and a few other things.

  • Import PSE 13 catalog into Lightroom 5.0

I have a very extensive PS Elements catalog, now in version 13 of PSE. I just bought Lightroom but dont want to re-catalog 30,000+ pictures. How can I import the PSE (version 13) catalog into Lightroom?

Are you running LR 5.7.1? If not upgrade from the Help menu.
Go to File >> Upgrade PSE Catalog
See image below - you should be able to select your Elements catalog from he drop-down list.

  • Importing TSV Captions/Metadata into Lightroom?

Does anyone know if it is possible to import a TSV Metadata file into lightroom? I can't seem to find any option for this. Thinking about moving to Lightroom and the only way I can bring 400,000 captions with me is to hopefully Import. If I can't I'm probably staying put. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello,
Maybe you can use CustomMetaData Plugin http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ProductsAndServices/CustomMetadataLrPlugin/

  • Importing from Nikon D7000 into Lightroom

Lightroom does not seem to recognize my Nikon D7000. I connect the camera, open LR, and nothing happens. I can click Import, but it doesn't recognize the device. The D7000 comes with Nikon's ViewNX2 software which they want you to use for import. Do I really need to use that to import photos from the camera, then import them from ViewNX2 into LR? That seems like a pain. I just upgraded to LR 3.6 so I don't think that's the issue.
    Thanks for any help!
    Carrie

    Carrie,
3.6 will read your D7000 files. In general it's best to use a card reader, but the camera should work. I'm not familiar with the D7000, but my D300 has two modes for USB: PTP and Mass Storage. The camera has to be set to Mass Storage to read images from it. Your camera may be the same.
If that isn't the case, try using Windows Explorer or Mac's Finder to drag and drop your pictures from the camera to your hard disk and then import from there.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Why when I add/import bridge CS6 photos into Lightroom 5 the photo totals don't match?

I have added about 3,200 photos into Bridge CS6 and many have been edited.  I went into Lightroom to Library/Import/add and only about 2800 were added.  Anyone know why I don't see all of them?  I even double check the import and don't see any new ones that I missed.  Hope it's something simple.

    Found it.
At first I was scared off because LR showed the same amount of photos to be imported the second time as it did before the first import.
Fortunately, the second import did nothing but import the new photos.
    Thanks.

  • How do I import my iPhoto library into Lightroom CC?

I just bought a new macbookpro with Yosemite 10.10.3 and have discovered that Apple has disabled iPhoto and replaced it with their new "Photos" app. I have a large iPhoto library (about 35,000 photos, and close to 500GB that I want to import into Lightroom. Since my library covers several years and has many "Events" I want to ideally apply metadata and keywords to selective events, albums etc. Is this possible, or should I import the whole megillah and then go about reorganizing it?  Based on posts I've read, there will be a bunch of us that want to do the same.
    Thanks.

Please read this for the details of how to do the Import
    http://www.lightroomqueen.com/ready-move-aperture-iphoto/
With regards to whether or not you should "import the whole megillah", I am a big believer that you want all of your organizing in one catalog. You do not want some in iPhoto and some in Lightroom. By having everything in one catalog, you eliminate the problem caused by fallible human memory where you don't remember which organizing tool contains a particular set of photos. It also eliminates the problem that if things are in two (or more) organizing tools, there is no way to search for all items that meet a specific metadata search.

  • Import 2 source fields into one destination field (appending entries)

    Dear forum members,
In MDM Import Manager, is it possible to take 2 fields from the source file structure and map the values to the same destination lookup field, so both values are appended to the table for the same record?
If so, can you provide detaiuls and considerations?
I have been looking at partitions, but all I can do is create a single record in the lookup table consisting of both values combined.
    Many thanks,
    Nick

    Hi Alon,
Yes the field I am testing with is called 'Hyperlink' of type 'Lookup [Qualified Flat] (multi-valued)'
The field shows as type 'F' in the destination field pane.
I do acrtually want to load to a different field eventually, but am just testing with this as it seems to be the riight type.
The table I want to load to is the Hyperlinks table in SRM-MDM. It has the following structure in the console:
Field Name        Field Type       Non-Qualifier / Qualifier
    Type                 (Lookup[flat])    Non-qualifier
    Mime Type        (Lookup[flat])    Qualifier
    URL                  (Text)              Qualifier
    URL Description (Text)              Qualifier
In import manager, the fields available are:
Hyperlink                                F    Lookup [Qualified Flat] (multi-valued)
Mime Type <Hyperlink>           Q   Lookup [Flat]
    URL <Hyperlink>                     Q  Text[250]
    URL Description <Hyperlink>    Q  Text[250]
Ultimately I am trying to map:
    1. Hyperlink          - a null source value to a fixed dest value of 'Link'
    2. Mime Type        - a null source value to a null dest value
    3. URL                  - 2 values from 2 fields in the source file to 2 (appended) entries
    4. URL Description - same 2 source values in the source file to 2 (appended) entries
Unfortunately we cannot modify the hyperlinks table or use a different one as the fields will not be displayed properly in the catalogue view SRM requisitioners will have so I HAVE to use this table and these fields.
    What do you think?
    Thanks a lot,
    Nick
