Impossible to Boot from CD for satellite 220CS

Hello,
I have a toshiba satellite 220CS/1.4GB model no. PA1240EYV-NLDI
It has a removable diskette station.
Later I get a separate 6x cd drive model no. XM-1402B, Ver. No. 002, ROM Ver. KF60118.
This drive has is own case and I can connect it aside to the laptop
I can remove the drive out his case, but it is not possible to change the cd drive with the diskette station.
This cd drive dont fits into the space of the diskette station.
When I connect the drive with his little cable to the laptop, and I tell the BIOS to boot from CD then I hear the cd spinning an I see the LED burn for a short while.
But he doesnt boot.
I tried to use the thing as a non boot device.
The OS on the laptop is Win95 (I want to change that)
I modified config.sys and also autoexec.bat.
I used for this the original drivers for the cd drive (downloaded from the internet).
But the system dont sees the cd drive.
The BIOS said that it is possible to boot from CD, but why not my system?
Who can help me with this problem
Thanks,
Bartje

Hi all
checking my memory, which can be wrong here, it should be possible to take out the FDD from the 220CS and put a CD there instead.
The CD works fine INSIDE the computer but will not work in the case. The case is intended only for a FDD. The case can also be used as a 'parking space' for the CD when not in use.
You can remove the FDD/CD from the 220 by;
- turning the machine upside down
- unlocking the bay-lock with the small switch.
- ejecting the device by gently pulling/lifting the eject-lever.
When installing another device don't forget to lock the bay-lock again.
Good luck.

    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

  • [nForce] K7N2G-L : Impossible to boot from new 200 GB hard drive !???

I've been trying to solve this problem for 10 days without success !
When I try to install XP on my new 200 GB Seagate hard drive, after the first reboot, I got a long "Verifying DMI pool data ..." and finally a "Boot Disk Failure ! Insert System Disk"
However, the drive appears to work fine as a storage drive, when I use my old 120 GB maxtor HD as boot drive.
I've already verified a lot of things, on my own, and with the Seagate customer service (who have concluded the issue is not due to the hard drive...) :
    - The drive is correctly recognized by the BIOS (in standard CMOS features) as a 200 GB drive
    - However, I've tried to set the HD access mode to "LBA" instead of "Auto", without any change to the problem...
    - I've run the diagnostic tool provided by Seagate (called Seatools), and it reported no error on the drive
    - The ATA cable I use are OK (I tried two other ones)
    - I've run Memtest as well as an analog tool provided by Seagate : both reported no error with my RAM
    - The problem appears when the HD is primary master as well as secondary master, on both IDE connectors of my motherboard
    - I tried different PSU connectors to the HD
    - I've just managed to install XP on my older 40 GB drive, which I connected where the 200 GB was, without the least problem
    - I've built an integrated XP with Service Pack 1 bootable CD, but it doesn't solve the problem when I use it to install XP, instead of my original XP Pro CD-ROM
    - While booting on my old XP system and having the new HD connected as secondary master, I could access it in windows XP and read / write files on it. I also ran Partition Magic 8 to verify the primary boot partition that had been created during the beginning on my new XP installation, and it reported no error
    - During the "Verifying DMI pool data" message, I see the HD activity LED lighting very briefly (shouldn't it light more continuously if the system really tried to boot from the HD ??)
Well, all should work, but it doesn't !!
    I'm really desperate !
What should I due with that new hard drive, if I can't boot on it ??
Your advised help would be very very appreciated...

    Thanks for your replies!
    Fredrik :
As I mentionned in my post, I tested several ATA cables. I always of course connect the blue end to the board and the HD to the other end (black) of the cable. I tried to jumper the drive on "cable select" as welle as "master", the problem remain in both cases.
The recognition is set to "Auto" as you say.
There are no other IDE units (my CDROM drive is a SCSI one), unless I try to connect that new HD as secondary master, while booting on my old mactor 120 GB as primary master. As I said, the big drive works fine as a storage drive, the problem is really to boot on it.
I had also removed my extra cards while attempting to solve the problem, but without success...
    Osnavi :
Each time I try to install XP from the CDROM, I create a new partition (15 GB, NTFS, normal formating) at the beginning of the drive. There are also 2 other NTFS partitions to fill up the HD. But I always try the installation on the first partition.
In order to se if this would change something, I've also tried to create the partitions with Powerquest PArtition Magic 8, and I paid attention to seting the boot partition as active.
As for Fdisk, I thought it was only compatible with FAT partitions ?

  • Impossible to boot from a WD My Book 3 To (USB2 & USB 3)

    Ho,
    I'm on a MBPr & 10.8.4
I would like to boot from a Western Digital My Book 3 To (USB2 & USB 3), on a dedicated partition but i can't.
I tried wisth antoher drive, a smaller one, withe one partion, it's OK.
Does anyone knowes how to fix it ?
    Thanks
    Nemrod

I have just gone through very extensive tests with USB3 external drives and my mid 2012 Macbook Pro (non Retina).
The short answer is that if your Mac has USB3 hardware, you can read and write via USB3 when booted into Mac OS, and take advantage of its greater speed. (Some people have reported that you may be stuck at USB2 speed if the first device connected to the port is USB2. But you can always fix that by just rebooting.)
HOWEVER the boot ROM of many of those Macs does NOT support USB3. To boot from a clone you have made on a USB3 drive, you need to connect your drive via a USB2 hub or USB2 cable. It will operate at USB2 speed but it will work. Interestingly enough, the clone may actually appear to work better on older Macs that do not support USB3 at all, because of course the drive then operates in USB2 mode.
I have submitted a bug report to Apple, but there is no guarantee that they will choose to develop updated boot ROMs that support USB3 for older Macs with USB3 ports.
As others have said, you have to use Disk Utility to partition in GUID format, and format the drive as Mac OS Extended (journalled) to have a bootable drive. But that's easy. And you can even choose to encrypt the external drive. As long as it is connected via USB2 at boot time, it boots just fine once you unlock it with your password.

  • Booting from cd for 3480

    Hi
I have a 3480 with a PCMCIA cdrom and am trying to get it to boot from that does anyone know if it's possible?
If it's not possible does anyone know how to reinstall the OS if you can't get into Windows OS (forgotten password!) and there is no floppy?
    thanks
    Amanda

    Hi Amanda
Yes, the machine supports CD-Rom boot via PC Card.
However, You will not be able to boot Win2000 or WinXP completely with the original Toshiba CD ROM option.
If You use this CD then do this instead: (I assume that You want to install Win2000 or WinXP on the 3480)
    1) make (on another machine) a bootable CD with DOS(W98 command prompt) and support (via Config.sys and autoexec.bat) for the Toshiba CD Rom.
    2) Boot the 3480 with this CD.
    3) Format the HDD and copy the contents of the i386 folder of the Win2000 / WinXP CD. If You have other plans for the evening, make sure You have SMARTDRV installed before You try this! :)
    4) Start the Winnt setup from the harddrive.
    Hope this helps!

  • Portege 3480: is it impossible to boot from a USB-cd-drive?

I would like to install win 2000 on my portege 3480. However, I have a very difficult time getting it to boot from external cd drives. I have tried with both a iomega Cd-drive and a LiteOn DVD-drive. Neither of them works. Both drives are connected via USB port. I have read somewhere that it's only possible to boot via pcmcia cd drives on the 3480 - can that really be true??
Hope somebody can help me out.
    Thanks,
    Steffen - Denmark

    Yes, this is true
Generally its not possible to boot up from the external USB CD/DVD drive.
You need a supported and compatible PCMCIA drive.

  • Booting from Realtek for image install

I am having the most difficult time trying to boot from the Realtek gigabit adapter onto our network so I can install XP64 from an image.  I've gone through the Bios and changed the boot orders around but still noting seems to work.  Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

I am no expert at this so all I can do is to ask basic stuff. Can you boot the machine from a disk? Have you set the boot order to see the LAN as the first boot device? Have you checked the cable and LED's on the LAN connection?

  • Safe to buy AC adaptors from Ebay for Satellite M105-s3041?

    Hi,
I have just lost my ac-power adaptor for my Satellite M105-s3041 computer.
I want to get a replacement but I bought my computer in the US and am not sure a replacement would have a UK 3-pin plug.
Also similarly to another guy on here I wonder if it is safe to byuy adaptors from e-bay as I don't want to shell out so much money for a replacement adaptor.
Do any of you have experience with 2-bay replacements?
I also don't know which adaptor would be correct for my model,
    Hope you can help,
    Chris

For me it looks like the Satellite M105-s3041 is a US notebook series.
I checked the Toshiba US page and found this page:
    [Satellite M105-S3041 Detailed Product Specification|http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_outFrm.jsp?moid=1364114&rpn=PSMA0U&ct=DS&soi d=1420312]
You need a 15V - 5A AC Adapter with 50-60Hz frequency (Universal) input.
The PA2521U-2ACA Toshiba 90W Global AC Adapter would be compatible also...
    You are asking if its safe to use an AC adaptor from Ebay;
Well, usually you should use the compatible and supported parts.
But I think you could also use another part but its important that an 3rd party AC adaptor would support the same specification like the Toshiba AC adaptor.
    Then everything should work ok

  • Macbook won't boot from cd for windows

so i have a macbook late 2008 and i tried installing windows 7 and ubuntu. When i installed windows 7 from bootcamp when it restarted it came up with a black screen and a blinking line. I tried this with different disk and different versions of windows but it keeps happening. Today I tried to put ubuntu on a cd and try to install it on a seperate partition and the same thing happened, it booted to a black screen with a blinking line. Is there a problem with my macbook or something else. Please help, thanks.
    P.S. running 10.7.5

  • HELP: Impossible to boot from installation CD

    Hello,
We were given an iMac G5 at christmas. I had to reinstall OSX 10.3 a couple of days ago: that worked out just fine... except that all the user passwords were changed! So I tried booting on the installation CD again to change them back... except that even when I hold down the C key, my computer never boots on the CD: I always end up on the screen where you have to choose a user, and since none of the previous passwords work, I'm just stuck there.
Is there something wrong with the installation CD? Is there any other way?

    Hi tarzanette,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Insert the Install CD 1 on reboot while holding down the option-key. This will bring up the startup manager where you can select the install CD as boot volume.

  • Blue & White G3 won't boot from Tiger DVD

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the B & W G3's ARE supported under OS X 10.4 right? This computer came to me only a week ago with 10.3.9 installed (flaky, but working), 32x CD-ROM, 384 MB RAM, 25 GB HD. The PRAM battery is dead. I was also given an NEC 5x DVD-ROM to install. This works fine (when it wants to) when booting with an OS 9.2.2 CD-ROM, and it can see and open the Tiger install CD... but it will NOT boot from it for some reason, computer just sits and idles. Any ideas?

This article concerns a specific problem with the Blue & White G3 and the Matsushita CR-587 CD-ROM drive. However, it shows an Open Firmware workaround that you could try:

  • How do you boot from a Windows CD (Ghost in this case) in Boot Camp ?

I installed Bootcamp about a year ago. I used Norton's Ghost to make a disk image of my C: drive in Bootcamp for a backup. My machine is now misbehaving and I want to reinstall my orginal image from Ghost. However, I cannot figure out how to boot from the Ghost CD to begin the process. If I tap f8 or f2 or delete key nothing happens to bring me to that BIOS screen where I can choose which device I want to boot from at start up. Any ideas? Thanks

    Hello deacm,
Supposedly you can insert your CD in the drive and, upon restart, (immediately after the chime) hold down the "C" key until the screen shows "Press any key to boot from CD". For some reason, this does not work for me.
If the above step didn't work for you, you can try the following steps that works for me:
    1) If you can boot into Windows, insert the CD (close any windows that pop up), go to the Control Panel>Boot Camp and select the CD as the startup drive, then restart. The screen will briefly display "Press any key to boot from CD" (for only a moment) so press any key immediately.
    2) If you can't boot into Windows, in Apple's System Preference, select "Startup Disk" and then click on the Windows partition. Close System Preference, insert the CD and (after a couple of minutes when the CD is recognized) restart. Immediately after the chime, hold down the "Option/Alt" key. Select the CD and press "Return". Moments later, the screen should display "Press any key to boot from CD", then press any key.
    Good luck,

  • Exchange 2013 Servers booting from SAN

    Hi,
One of my client has decided to go with NetApp Flexpods for implementing Exchange 2013 in their environment.
It has also been decided that these servers will boot from SAN and
Exchange 2013 will also be installed on SAN.
We are planning to Install Win 2012 R2 for OS and E2k13 CU8. Few questions:
    1) Is it supported to boot Windows Server 2012 R2 from SAN, Specially if that server is going to used for E2k13
    2) Is it supported to Install Exchange 2013 CU8 on SAN
I researched about this and understood that this is supported from Windows OS perspective. I am more concerned about the whole configuration falling within support boundary of Exchange 2013. I found an article which talks about the complexity involved in
troubleshooting and indicates that its mainly SAN vendor who would be troubleshooting if running into any issues.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/305547- This article is not yet applicable to 2012 R2. Its applicable only till 2008 R2.
http://www.enterprisenetworkingplanet.com/datacenter/the-pros-cons-of-booting-from-san.html - Pro & Cons of booting from SAN
The booting from SAN for Exchange servers concerns me a lot as i have never seen any implementation in Exchange 2003, 2007 & 2010 doing this in my 10 years of experience. I have supported about 10 different enterprise exchange deployments and never saw
this. So this is an unknown territory for me, hence looking for some best practices, articles and guidance around this if its supported by Microsoft Exchange team to run Windows and Exchange from SAN.
    Thanks

  • BE6000 Boot from SCU Partition on Flexfalsh to run server diagnostics.

    Hey,
I notice that the BE6000s have the "Onboard SCU Storage Support" BIOS option is set to "Disabled" making it impossible to boot from the Flexflash SCU partition to run diagnostics before deployment. If I set this to "Enabled", run my diagnostics, and then set it back to "Disabled" am I breaking some special "BE Rule"? Or is it recommended that I download the latest version of the SCU ISO and boot using the KVM virtual media?
