Impossible to boot MacBook Pro Retina ! impossible to start in single user mode, Openfirmware password set, but safari works!

I have got a Macbook pro retina.
I have done 2 partitions on the SSD drive. 1 for the OS and 1 for the user (with a kind of ln -s /Home/myself /Volume/Part2/myself
I was watching a movie (with VLC) in full screen for a while and I wanted to escape. Impossible, and impossible to reboot.
When I start, I have a directory with a question mark.
I have a Open firmware passwords set (that I remember).
I cannot reset PRAM. (I can not change the RAM amount inside the commuter as this is a retina model)
I cannot start in verbose mode.
I can choose a disk to boot. I see only the OS drive and not the user partition, and no 'recovery partition'. It seems that i need to do a fsck -yff on the user partition but how ?
I can start the OS partition, and i can choose 'guess' or 'myself'. If i choose myself, I have an error message :'there is a error, the session can not start'. If I start with the guess account, I restart, and then I can browse the internet with safari (this is how I am writing this text!)
=> How can i repair the partition ? (open a terminal, boot in single user mode ...?)
best regards.

Actually, the recovery partition was there, but was not shown as my user partition. I have seen that reseting the PRAM and changing the ram could remove the open firemware password. So i have turn the computer on until the battery was empty. Then I boot about 20 times, and unplug the power supply after few seconds at different step of the booting pricess. At last, the screen default resolution when booting changed, I undertood that i succeeded, and I was able to enter.
Then I boot in single user mode, removed the open firmware password, activated the root user,  and everything was fine now !

Hello I am on a macbook pro (retina IOS 9) i have installed xcodes and command line tools but codeblocks does not compile, terminal gives this message /Users/MacPc/Desktop/Untitled1: Permission denied      any one has a solution?? please...

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

Brand new 15" MacBook Pro Retina - unplugged from Thunderbolt Display and Keyboards today find keyboard alpha-numerics not working; except the function keys, delete key, tab key, command/ctrl/shift/alt/fn and arrow keys; and 7/8/9/u/o/j/l produce cursor nudges.

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

I should have added to my posting (instead of using this "reply" -  it is the server passwork it is asking for and I have never known that I had one and assumed it was the passwork I always used for this type of thing.

  • New Macbook Pro Retina continually re-starting when lid is closed - Kernal Panic included

    Hello,
I called 800-MYAPPLE for tech support but they were not able to help me at all, hoping someone here can help.  My new MacBook Pro Retina has been continually re-starting when the lid is closed.  It does not happen every time, may 20% of the time.  I am running Windows 8 on Boot Camp if that piece of information is important.  Here is the latest kernal panic from the log:

One trick:  When you remove the bottom case take note of which screws go in which holes.  They differ in length.

  • I have recently noticed that my MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing.  I first noticed that the track pad would not work for short periods of time.  Is anyone else having a problem?

My MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing up.  It seems that it is happening more often as time goes on.
I first noticed that the track pad would freeze then whole computer would completly freeze.
    Most annoying.
Is anyone else having a similar problem?

    Hey B-bram,
For issues with video resolution not being consistent, I would start with resetting the NVRAM on your MacBook Pro. That will reset the resolution to its default as well as resetting other default settings like sound volume and start up volume. Take a look at the article below for more information about that and how to perform the NVRAM reset.
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

    Take care,

  • Mac not booting normally after running '/sbin/fsck -fy' in Single user mode

HI, I tried to log in to single user mode and run the '/sbin/fsck -fy' command. This command failed. So I rebooted my Macbook pro by 'reboot' command. On bootup I hear the chime shoud and can see the Mac Symbol but never reach the login prompt. The round circle keeps rotating over the gray screen and nothing happens.
Then I again hard rebooted mac book and entered single user mode. I ran again '/sbin/fsck -fy' many times and after many attempts the command stuck and never returned.
Then I tried using the recovery method to reinstall MAC OS X. It asked me to choose the Harddrive where to install MAC OSX. But the option of "macintosh HD" was disabled and message was " hard drive locked".
Please help me how to boot my MAC normally :'(

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Boot in Recovery again and open Disk Utility. Then, choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and repair the hard drive. If it is repaired, restart and OS X should start correctly. If not, you will probably have to format the hard disk.
You only have to use that command when you have problems with the Mac OS X volume filesystem that they couldn't be repaired with Disk Utility, and as this command got stuck, probably damaged the OS X volume filesystem

  • Macbook won't start in single-user-mode.

I'm trying to repair the disk and instead of booting in single-user mode, it boots up regularly, ignoring Command + S. I'm running 10.6.8.
    Thank you.

Nevermind, seems to be working now!

  • New MacBook Pro Retina - first time start up won't move past page where Apple ID has been entered

Just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" with retina display. Pressed the power button and entered all the information as prompted. Entered my Apple ID and pressed continue and now nothing happens. It has now been 15min and the screen still shows "continue" while the "back" option is greyed out. The cursor of the mouse can still be seen moving on the screen but clicking on the "continue" button has had no response.

So what do I do? Do I switch off the PC and try again? Or will this do some sort of damage since it's the first boot...?

  • Soundcloud audio content has suddenly stopped loading on my new Macbook Pro Retina. I do not have Flashblock extension installed. Cache cleared, nothing works.

Two days ago I was able to play Soundcloud audio both on their site and on Facebook. Now it hangs and won't play. It is fine in other browsers. I have the latest version of everything and do not have the Flashblock or Flashblocker extension that seems to have been the culprit for some others with this problem.
I've updated Flash once since getting my MBP Retina two weeks ago, and the audio was still playing from Soundcloud after the update. I have cleared cache, cookies and history to no avail. It is very annoying as I don't want to have to change browsers every time I need to play something from Soundcloud. It has always worked perfectly with Firefox until this happened.

If you use extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • Can't boot computer with 10.5 install CD or Single User Mode, or Safe Mode.

Ive written a couple times about this and responded to people who have similiar queeries but i just havent gotten any answers.
I cannot log onto my computer, I boot up and get a blue screen, with a nice black arrow. Thats as far as i can get. Obviously happening to lots of people..So, ive tried rebooting holding the C key and with 10.5 install CD, ive tried Unix (command-S), Ive tried resetting PR Ram, ive tried mantra recitation and cooing to my laptop; ive tried all the shortcuts in Oreilly's book and the only thing that DOES work is holding the OPTION key while rebooting. This brings up a nice icon of a padlock and a place to type letters or words and then there is another arrow in a box. Is this Open Firmware? I dont have an open firmware password...Ive tried entering my user password but it doenst accept it. ( I did change my password last week, did that create these problems???) how do i by pass that password????? Is it open firmware? Hello,
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Utilities from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access the Menubar at top.

  • MacBook Pro retina and external screens

I connect my recently arrived 15" MacBook Pro retina to one of three 24inch Led displays which I use at different work locations... On two occasions on start up the external screen did not turn on. Power is on, USB not, led display is off, System preferences Displays module finds it... but there's not way to turn the screen on. Next day the very same screen turned on without anything particular being changed. Today I've not been able to turn on another of these screens, yesterday the third screen functioned beautifully more than 12 hrs.
Any suggestions about why this may be happening?
    Thank you

Eventually I got so annoyed I tried going back to a time machine backup when everything was still fine. (restoring Mac OSX to a time when the issue occured did not help). That worked, however it would be nice to know how to reset the display settings without losing progress.

  • Macbook pro retina and time capsule problem

I have purchased a macbook pro retina and time capsule recently. I had no trouble setting up the TC, however even though it is visible in the Finder, I can not connect to it. I can not make time machine. Try to connect with my imac that has snow leopard and immediately detected.

  • Two months Macbook Pro 13 and Macbook Pro Retina 13

If I have bought a 13" Macbook Pro and after one month it comes out the Macbook Pro Retina 13 I couldn't return to have the new one, but shouldn't Apple substitute (after me paying the difference) for the new model?
Is it ethical that the company present as "new" an upgrade of Macbook Pro and then in less than two month announce a groundbreaking new product?

There is no Macbook Pro 13" retina. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
You bought a computer based on your needs. Technology always advances so regardless what you bought it won't be long before a newer model is available.
