Impossible to export (format .mov)

Hello there,
iMovie has worked fine until now. But now, I don't know what happened, but when I export a movie as a .mov (to cd or internet or anything else), the movie is over 160 minutes long (instead of around 30 minutes) and is breaking up.
Any idea what to do?
Thanks for your answer.

Hello again Bengt,
And first of all, thank you for using your time to help. That's great. Thank you.
Unfortunately, it didn't help, I'm sad to say.
This sounds more severe. I would.
- delete the iMovie pref file
I tried. Nothing.
- run: Repair permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
I did it too. It repaired a lot of things but didn't change anything.
- start from another hard disk or CD/DVD then
run: Repair hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool)
I don't understand this one? I don't have any other harddisk. I do have an extern DVD but this is because the one in the mac doesn't work really.
- start a new account and log into this and re-try.
I did it but it didn't change anything.
I didn't erase the pref file again though... I'll try it and then log on as an other user and see.
Now to your questions :
- How much free space is there on Your int hard disk
Right now, as I have copied some differents other imovies file, not much: 46 GB
- Is there any ext devices connected
Yes. There is a iSight, mighty Mouse, iMic, a mouse pad with USB connection and usb-hub and an external DVD Reader/burner (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D).
- Mac OS X.4.8,
Correct.
iMovie v. 6.0.3 ?
Correct (6.0.3 (267.2) to be precise)
and QuickTime version ?
QuickTime Pro version 7.1.5
- Did You put in any third party plug-ins to iMovie or
into QT ?
Yes: I used som themes from eyecandy in iMovies and som extra transitions, but it has worked fine i a long time.
And I use Flip4Mac (I don't know if it's a plugin, I think it is)
- is you Mac as "factory delivered"?
- or did you install a new iLife version?
I did install a new iLife version long ago It is 1.5 year old and when I bought it, it came with iLife 05.
- or did you de-install any files/apps, e.g. using
"Multilingual" etc. pp
Well... I installed Second Life some days ago... I don't know if it uses "Multilingual"...
- other programs that interferes like < Unsanity APE >
I don't know what "unsanity" is and i made a search. I found only one file: com.unsanity.ape.plist
What is it?
Shall I delete it?
< FileVault > etc.
I don't use FileVault
1. Sequre that there are at least 20Gb free space on the
internal hard disk.
There is.
2. Try not using any external hard disk
I don't. Only external DVD.
3. Sometimes third part software can localize and repair
the problem like:
- Disk Warrior™
- TechTool™
Irk! You saw the price of those things? Gosh I really hope we can solve the problem without it
Once again: Thank you very much for your help.
Regards,
Chill

  • Ios imovie export format: .mov vs. .mp4

Can anyone please tell me how to force short (under 2 minute) iOS iMovie files to save as mp4s into Camera Roll?
I am an art & music teacher whose students create short iMovies for several assignments. After they're done, they save their movies to the camera roll -- and then attach them to our assignment in Edmodo to submit for a grade. In this last assignment, suddenly some of the kids' files are saving as mp4 and some as mov -- and I can't open the .mov files on my school-issued iPad 2 or on my home MacBook. We have never run into this problem before and I can't sort out if it is a matter of file size or what. I experimented with uploading files into email -- and sometimes they save as mp4 and sometimes as mov. Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Why not?
iMovie doesn't 'hand-thru' the data; any export setting (what was your choice?) compresses the material - in your case by 50% ... did it visually do any harm? If not - no prob, hm?
And again: mov or mp4 are just wrappers, no 'format', esp. no codec - that is INSIDE the mov. Or mp4 ...

I am puzzled. How can I export FCP movie to a WMV format or Windows Media Player friendly?
    Thanks in advance.

You need a third party app to do this... AVI is the only format that you can export from FCP that's windows media friendly... WMF's can be exported with flip4mac... http://www.flip4mac.com Probably the best of the apps...

Probably because you have the free version of Flip4MAc from Telestream that limits exported files to 30 seconds or so. There ae several paid versions  – depending on your requirements

Just as a preventative measure try running Disk Utility in the Utilities Folder inside the Applications Folder. Run Repair Disk Permissions on the whole hard drive.
According to this disuccsion group posting on MacRumours.com, Error -50 is a permissions error and repairing permissions may be enough to get you going again:

  • How do I export a movie using a different format (iMovie 2013)

Title question. I can only seem to export my movie using .mp4 and I've seen on youtube using previous versions of iMovie being able to change the format...
I use a Sony DSC-HX20V to capture my footage which formats the videos in AVCHD and it records in an image quality of 50p. I want to also know how to import these videos onto a 4th generation iPod Touch and which format will support the device better. Thank You.

Although I don't use it myself, saving to Theater creates versions for all sorts of devices including iPod Touches.
    iMovie 10 help says:
"When you add a movie, trailer, or clip to the Theater, iMovie creates versions of your movie tailored for local playback (1080p HD), playback on an iOS device (720p HD), and web streaming (480p SD)."

  • How to export quicktime movie?

I was wondering how I can export a quicktime movie (camcorder film) to a smaller size but that can also be played on both Mac and PC computers? I tryed to export a couple time using encoding such as MPEG-4 but the movie accually was much smaller to view than the original and the second time I tryed to encode it at a bigger size, the movie played at the same sze as the original but at a lower quality because it was stretched.
Can anyone help me with this. I just want to export and save a quicktime movie into a playble formate for both mac and windows and also not taking up too much disk space either. Thank you.

One could write a book (I did) that explains what all the codecs do and where and when to use them.
You need only need to know where the file will be viewed and its source format.
As Rick has pointed out, most new digital cameras capture in DV (Digital Video) and they are nearly instantly ready for software editing (like iMovie). QuickTime Pro can also edit the .dv files.
Once you determine where the file will be viewed (the Web for example) you'll get an understanding of methods to "compress" the file to fit the planned playback.
Three major factors that reduce the file size:
The new dimensions (720X480 DV files) to Web 320X240 (DV uses rectangular pixels).
Reduce the "frame rate". If the source was 30 frames per second you can usually remove half of them (15fps). Use more fps if the source has lots of motion.
The codecs used. Compressor-decompressor is handled by the delivery format (.mov or .mp4). Some are more efficient and offer better quality when enlarged during playback. MPEG-4 is the most modern and will soon become the next generation of DVD (currently MPEG-2).
This is where your question can only be answered by you. The quality can be adjusted (some codecs offer "sliders"; good better best while others allow you to set a data rate) and only you know what is acceptable.
Rick suggests a "one minute" export and I agree. Use various settings and data rates and use your eyes to decide what is acceptable.
Don't forget that part of your capture was audio. If your camera captures only mono formats making the export into stereo does nothing but double the size of the audio track. The Advanced Audio Codec (AAC) format found in MPEG-4 exports does a great job of reducing the file size. You can control these settings at export, too.

  • Error exporting long movie in Premiere Elements 4

I just finished editing a movie in Premiere Elements 4.  Every time I try to export the movie, it begins rendering, gets as far as about 15%, and then says "Export Error: Error compiling movie.  Unknown error."  This happens no matter what format I choose.
I've read that this problem can be caused by titles and transitions, of which this movie has both.  But I think the problem is entirely due to the movie's length, which is six minutes and fifty-five seconds.  I say this because if I split the movie into 25-to-50-second chunks, leaving all titles and transitions intact, all the chunks export with no problems whatsoever.
I'm not running any other programs while the movie exports, but that doesn't help.
The source files are MOV (and one PNG), and the resolution is 1920x1080.  I want to export it at the same resolution, otherwise what was the point of shooting in that resolution?  I'm running Windows Vista on a Samsung R522 laptop, if it helps.
For what it's worth, I did manage to successfully export the audio portion of the movie as a WAV file.
What can I do?  My movie is due to premiere at a local arts festival in a few weeks, so I need to sort this out.  I read somewhere that the ideal setup is to have three drives -- one for the source videos, one for running the program, and one to export the file onto.  Will that help?
Many thanks for any suggestions you may have.
    -Grant

Thanks Bill -- and thank you mods for moving the thread.  I couldn't find an Elements forum so I assumed there wasn't one.
Actually, the progress bar in my version does tell you what frame it's on.  When I tried to export it just now, it gave up around frame 2328 of 12447.  Frame 2328 would be 01:17:18... which is the middle of a clip, with no titles, no effects, and no transitions, just ordinary video and sound.  30%, the number you suggested, gives frame 3738, which is 02:04:18, which is a different clip but the same deal.
The exact number varies from attempt to attempt anyway, which is why I think it's a "system memory" problem rather than a problem with a certain moment in the film.  As I said, each part of the film exported fine on its own.
The videos are all MOV format, 1920x1080, ranging in size from 40 MB to 666 MB (maybe the devil is trying to stop me from exporting).  There are 41 of them, giving a total of 11.9 GB.  The single PNG is also 1920x1080 and 6.02 KB.  The movie's audio is actually muted -- the audio that I successfully exported before was just the original audio from the raw clips.
I've got 55.3 GB of free space on my C drive and 580 GB of free space on my external drive; Premiere won't successfully export onto either of them.
Thanks for the link to the KB article, but I'd read it before and it didn't really help.  As it says, "unknown error" really does mean just that.  And it's clear that none of my clips or effects are problematic since they all exported fine when split into chunks.
I really do appreciate your help!  I don't know too much about computers so if I didn't give you the information you were looking for please let me know.
    Thanks so much,
    -Grant

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

  • Export HD move to widescreen, is it possible?

I'm new to FCE. Used Premier Elements and others for years. I just edited a moved in 1080i HD and was able to create a dvd by sending the QuickTime movie version to iDVD.
Now I just want to create a file to keep as a separate movie. With Premier Elements on Windows and using DV, it was easy. Just create an uncompressed AVI and you keep good quality and universal editability. With FCE I have tried pretty much every export format and none produce a wide screen movie period. I've read through this forum and the only suggestion is to use Anamorpicizer which then requires that I buy QT Pro. (As an aside, I'm using FCE 3.0 on an Intel machine, so export to QT takes 25 hours for a 10 minute clip.)
I've tried the suggestion to create a DV sequence and copy my HD to that, still no wide screen QT file.
(My goal is to have a 'movie' clip I can use for future editing, easy viewing and conversion to iPod and other formats using iMovie which is a native app. I'm waiting for FCE 4.0 before upgrading, if it comes soon.)
Is there anyway to export widescreen from FCE? And is there any way to save it in MPEG2 for (inclusion on future DVDs without keeping all the HD source online) without having to buy a 3rd party codec?
    thanks in advance.

So it looks like you want to export your finished movie into a format that can be edited by FCE in the future ... you've decided you don't want to keep your original clips and FCE Project file ...
Do File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion
In the Save dialog box -
..... Select Format > QuickTime Movie
..... Select Use > Default Settings
    Then click the Options button
In the Movie Settings window -
    Select Video > Settings
..... Select Compression type > Apple Intermediate Codec
..... Select Compressor > Preset > HDV 1080i (you said you have a 1080i movie)
    UNcheck "Prepare for Internet Streaming"
Click OK back to the Save dialog box
Give your movie a name, select the location to save, hit Save
This will give you a QT file encoded as Apple Intermediate Codec, and you will be able to import it back into FCE in the future when you want to do more editing.
If it were me, I would keep my original clips and FCE project file instead of doing what you are doing here.
As for your other questions, Anamorphicizer is a great little app but it's only needed when you have anamorphic DV material, which is not what you have here. FCE does not encode into MPEG2; that's done by iDVD, Compressor or other applications. If you want to output a video that you can re-edit in the future, you DON'T want to encode it into MPEG2.
You might find this article by Ken Stone of interest - Video to iPod
One final note - you really should upgrade to FCE 3.5. Version 3.0 will run on the Intel machines but not well. HDV takes a lot longer to export than DV, but 25 hours for a 10 min video is awful; it's probably because you're running FCE 3.0 on your Intel MBP. Version 3.5 is the universal binary version that was designed for the Intel Macs. How much RAM do you have in that MBP?

I have an external hard drive which has my i-photo on it & some movies from i-movie that I have on disk now. But for some reason my ehd has a caution symbol on it & I can't move my event to free up space on my hd so that I can export i-movie events. Help!

Usually the caution symbol means that it's formatted as a PC compatible format like NTFS or most likely FAT32. For iMovie to use it the ehd must be formatted Mac OS Extended. Then iMovie will show it without the caution symbol and you can drag/drop open any Event/Project from that hard drive.
To find out if it's formatted as PC:
Go to the desktop, holding down the Control key click on that ehd and in the pop-menu choose 'Get Info'
Under Format: It will say whether or not it's Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The only way to undo a PC formatted ehd would be to copy everything off of it first, Erase/Format the drive using Disk Utility in the Applications>Utilities folder on your Mac, choosing the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format in the pull-down menu there.
