Impossible to launch disk utility from installation disk.

Hello.
I try to launch disk utility from install disk and I got a kernel panic screen: load the install disk, restart my computer with the alt key depressed, choose the install disk, press enter. After a few minutes, again a kernel panic screen ...
Someone already had this problem? Help ?
Regards.

Many thanks. I test with the second DVD player and I got the same problem. When the install disk is inserted in the DVD player, it works perfectly but boot always stops with a kernel panic.
The only problem of my Mac is to boot on the install disk. When I launch a Leopard install, I have the same problem : Kernel Panic.
Very strange... Don't know about booting process of Mac. It seems that my Mac is not able to load a kernel image from install disk or something like that.
Here is the last report of the Kernel Panic :

  • At a complete loss. Worried data is gone for good. Trying to fix disk by booting Disk Utility from installation DVD but disk ejects. Help!

    Hello Comunity,
I'm at a complete loss and I hope you could help me.
The machine I have is I believe an early 2006 iMac model. (Model identifier 4,1 if I recall correctly).
Awhile ago I installed Snow Leopard on the machine but have since begun encountering serious problems (but I think it's due to the hardware and it's age rather than the software, Snow Leo was running smoothly) and now the computer won't start - I'm faced with a grey screen and a flashing folder with a question mark on it. I tried booting using the various key combinations and as I understood it, my last resort at fixing it myself would be using Disk Utility on the installation DVD.
    This is what happens:
I boot the computer, insert the disk, press down and hold C (also tried Option). I hear the computer trying to read the disk, but after a considerable aount of time holding down the key and a grey screen, the disk ejects and the flashing folder returns.
Could anyone offer an insight or advice?
At this point I'm not even that interested in fixing the machine, but there are some extremely valuable files that I need to recover (the machine gave out just days before I got my extrenal HDD to back them up).
I'm worried about taking the machine down to the Genius Bar - I'm a completely self-supporting student and I imagine the recovery cost would be huge (if anyone could provide any information on the potential cost of the repair and/or recovery that would help).

One thing to try without needing the install disk: reboot holding down cmd-S. It should reboot to a black screen and text prompt. Type the following, with spacing exactly as shown, hit the return key after each line:
    mount -uw /
    fsck -fy
    Then type
    reboot
    and see if that helps.
Do you have any other Macs in the household (or cna use a friend's) that you can try connecting to it with a Firewire cable? If so, reboot the iMac holding down T, you should see a large Firewire symbol moving across the screen. Connecting to another Mac with a FW cable will show you the iMac's hard drive mounted to the other Mac's desktop.
You can also try Diskwarrior, which fixes drive filestructure problems. It's around $100.
Professional data recovery cost would depend on a) whether the hard drive is actually at fault, b) if it's physically damaged or just has a filestructure problem. A physically damaged drive can go into the thousands of dollars for data recovery; a drive with filestructure issues usually costs a lot less to recover files.

  • Need to run Disk Utility from OSX Disk to fix my hard drive.. help!

I have a newish early 2010 Macbook Pro. The standard 10.6 DVD will NOT boot my computer and yet I need to boot to DVD to use Disk Utility..
I'm nowhere near my restore disk so using that is not an option. Is there anything I can do to boot to "single user" mode and run Disk Utility so it can repair my HD?
    Thanks,
    Ricardo

Without your discs you're really out of luck. The 10.6 SL DVD contains too early a version to boot your computer. You would need a retail disc with a version of SL later than the one that came installed on it. If it came with 10.6.3 or earlier then the latest retail copies of SL should be 10.6.4 and would boot the computer.
Meanwhile if the computer is functional download and install AppleJack - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. Read the documentation then run the utility.
If your computer is not functional then you can try this:
Boot into single-user mode. After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it. At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
    reboot
and press RETURN to restart the computer.

  • After SN install can't launch Disk Utility from external drive

I recently upgraded 10.5.9 to SN on my white Macbook. First I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive onto the replacement drive in an external enclosure. Then I swapped drives so that the new drive is now the internal drive and the old drive is in the enclosure. I then upgraded the OS on the internal drive via SN installer on DVD.
Now when I start from the external drive in OS X 10.5.9 and try to launch Disk Utility from this drive I get a weird error message that "Disk Utility can't be launched because it's incompatible with this architecture." The only things I can think of is that Snow Leopard installs something that globally effects all perhipherals (like new disk drivers?), or that there is something in the enclosure's USB bridge which is causing this, or that installing Snow Leopard breaks the PRAM for older versions of OS X. Tech support for the enclosure vendor tells me there is nothing in the enclosure's USB that would cause this. Any insights into what's happening appreciated.

Thanks for response. Ah, that's it. I was trying to launch it from the applications folder I had dragged to the dock, which was done while running Snow Leopard. That's why (duh!) all the application icons were slashed out. : |

  • Start up from Installation Disk

In Disk Utility it says that to test the start up disk, boot from the OS X Installation Disk, then open Utilities and Disk Utility. You can't. You can only re-install the operating system (placing the existing system in a folder called, 'Previous System').
I did run the Apple Hardware Test (okay), but I don't think that's the same as testing the start up disk.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Yes you can.
After booting from the Tiger install disc, select your language and at the next screen (Installer window), select Utilities > Disk Utility from the Installer menu bar.

  • QUESTION: Running 'repair disk' from installation disks.........

    Hi
I am trying to learn the basics of OS maintenance.........
    1 question.........
A commonly described maintenance procedure is :
...Booting from the original O S disk that came with the computor and selecting disk utility off that disk, in order to run a 'repair disk' operation.
My question is this: my original installation disk-set is O S X 10.3 . However i have updated to OS X 10.3.9 via the internet in several steps... Once an update to 10.3.?, then 10.3.8 and fianally 10.3.9.
Can i still use the 'disk utility' 'repair disk' procedure from the original disk which is only 10.3 , if i have updated the OS to 10.9 via the internet ? If not, how do i do a 'repair disk' procedure from disk utility ?
    thanks for your time.....

    Judy,
First of all, Welcome to the Discussions!
re: "I repaired permissions using Install CD, I think it's the first version of Panther"
Not to fret, but I would return to your HD>Applications>Utilities>DiskUtility and repair permissions from there. This should have updated permissions that will take care of the new permissions that need to be set for the update increments in the OS since your initial 10.3 install.
As for the symptoms you are seeing, ie. no startup chime, black screen for seconds and hum I would return to the Disk Utility on the install disk #1 and run Repair Disk. Report back any errors it finds.
Does your computer have a Apple Hardware Test CD? If so you may wish to run this to check for any damage it will report.
As for Anacron, CacheOutX, PreferentialTreatment what features of these do you run? Clearing the Caches with CacheOutX for example should only be run for troubleshooting and not general maintenance of the OS.
A very good FAQ by Dr. Smoke for maintenance can be found here.
    Hope that helps some,

PS. Judy, in the future, if you find a need to post you may wish to start a new topic (even if your problem seems similar) as once a thread is marked answered by the original poster other users here may miss seeing your query for help. If you need help with figuring out how to do that let me know.

  • Using Disk Utility From Recovery Partition

Is there an advantage to repairing permissions after booting into Recovery disk? (Hold Option key as restart) I realize that Repair disk will be available if needed & it is not available when using Disk Utility from Mac HD partition.

    Thanks!
I thought that was the case but I had read multiple accounts of people with slow Macs after upgrading to Mavericks, running repair disk permissions from recovery disk to fix the problem.   I wondered why not just run repair permissions w/o restarting into recovery disk. Then they can also run verify disk, if they wish & only if there is a problem with the disk would they need to boot to recovery disk in order to run repair disk.

  • HT4848 how to erase the disk utility from my usb portbalbe flash drive

how do I  erase the disk utility from my usb portbalbe flash drive. I need the flash drive for other stuff and it isn't allowing me to do so.

  • Disk utility hangs during disk verify

Initially 'disk verify' registered errors on exit - minor error/issue it said, some kind of header problem, so I ran disk utility off the install disk. Now the machine's native version of disk utility hangs during disk verify, blue & white spirals forever.
This coincidentally straight after my gmail/google address/account was hacked a couple of days ago.

Have you tried booting in SafeBoot mode (shift key held on start
until login screen appears) then launch Disk Utility and then run
    its 'repair disk permissions' item, selecting the Macintosh HD;
and then note the repair window. It should fix something.
And when Disk Utility is done, quit it, and restart the Mac normally.
{...It is unlikely something from gmail affected your computer unless
you open up unknown sourced emails or go to odd web sites where
something may be downloaded from there, which you would almost
have to install (as admin, etc) for malware to work. You can get and
    try ClamXAV for free to see if it sees any malware virus content.}
If you use Gmail, and do not log in using the https:// (secure http)
you should change the habit and bookmark the secure login site.
And when booted from the Installer disk and running Disk Utility
from there, see about running "repair disk" and not verify. The
repair choice will verify; but verify will not repair. Could be if
you cannot use the Utility to Repair the issues, and the other
SafeBoot mode and the computer's Disk Utility to get it working
you may need to further troubleshoot and/or get third-party tools.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Is my HD Dead? Reformat Disk Utility Error: secure disk erase failed with the error could not open disk.

    Hi,
Fed up with seeing the spinning beach ball I decided to reformat my MacBook Pro...
After backing up everything on an external hard drive I put in the OSX install DVD, restarted the machine and held down 'C'.
I followed the install prcedure, clicking next a few times etc...
I then went into Utilities > Disk Utility. I chose 7-Pass to erase the Macintosh HD and set it off erasing.
I checked the process an hour in and message on screen read:
Secure disk erase failed with the error:
    could not open disk
The internal hard drive no longer exists in the disk utility so I cant retry erasing it.
The only thing that appears in disk utility is the OSX install DVD.
I can't even shut down the mac as everything under the apple tab is greyed out!
I'm guessing this means my hard drive is broken right?
If anyone has any other ideas of what to try I'd really appreciate that.
How do I turn the machine off?
If my hard drive is gone then should I consider getting an SSD drive?
Any recommendations for such a drive would be great.
    Hope you can help!

    Did you partition the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Disk utility. start up disk

Trying to run disk utility from the start up disk.
    I insert install disk #1.
    Restart while pressing C key.
I just get the language thing then the installer.
There is no disk utility or installer menu.
If I press continue, it's a dead end only installation choices with no escape or restart.
    What am I leaving out?
    Thanks.

One event showed the warning in your link.
Another was the white on black lines of text appearing.
The thing that just happened was a plain freeze, everything stops.
My Lacie EX HD and card reader were unplugged during the last freeze up.The printer was plugged in but off.
The Wacom tablet is plugged into the display.
I have a USB hub which only had the printer plugged into it.
I have an iMac plugged into the same router but it was shut down.
There are some JBL speakers plugged in.
I emailed Epson a few days ago because accessing the drivers was not clear to me.
They wrote back only describing how to set it up with the installed driver. Nothing about an update.

  • Unable to use Disk Utility to repair disk.

    Hi all
I have been having some problems trying to transfer movies from computer to my iPod. Someone just suggested that I use Disk Utility to verify disk permissions, as well as the disk. I was able to verify disk permissions and repair them. Noticed the some had something to do with iTunes, so that might fix my problem with transferring movies to my iPod. I then tried to verify the disk, but I got the following error "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Also this program shows that the following "Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
The <Repair Disk> button is not darkened, but is grey, such that is not an option. Any other way to repair this disk.
    Thanks
    Michael

The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive.
You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart; when you hear the chime hold down C key until the apple logo appears.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities in 10.4 and navigate to the Disk Utility application.
Select the start up drive, then go to the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.

  • Disk Utility misreading available disk space

Disk Utility and Finder tells me that I only have 8 GB of available space left on my 150GB hard drive. I knew this amount was wrong and I tried OMNI Disc Sweeper that confirmed that I"m only using 52GB of the hard drive. How do I rectify this and have the computer recognize the correct amount of available hard drive space?

You could try and see if the boot installer disc's version of Disk Utility
on the Installer disc of the OS X version you are running, can repair
this disk. It may be a simple matter of how the system reads any
tags on the old data on the drive which was set to be over-written by
the system. A good third party disk utility for your version of OS X
should be able to check and repair most issues if Apple's Disk Utility
may balk at some of the more tedious issues.
Also, if you boot into SafeBoot mode and then run the installed version
of Disk Utility and have it 'repair disk permissions' then when it is done,
quit Disk Utility, and restart the computer normally; that may help and
is non-invasive. And it usually does more good and no harm.
If there actually is a problem on the low-level of the hard disk drive
which may be causing this capacity available volume read error, one
of the cures short of a third party disk utility such as Disk Warrior or
Drive Genius2, using Apple Disk Utility, could be accomplished if
you happened to already be in the habit of making and using full
computer clones of the entire hard drive content on to an external
hard disk drive. Then you could have your full backup, and be able
to totally wipe the hard disk drive, zero-overwrite the old data, and
reformat the hard disk drive (and use repair disk) from the booted
installer disc's Disk Utility; then move back a full clone of your Mac.
Forgoing that option, if what you already have can do the job, then
you can save the other choices and investments for another day.
Good luck & happy computing !

  • Disk Utility - Create encrypted disk images super sloooow

Trying to create encrypted disk images via Disk Utility on my iMac (i7 8GB) is super-slow in 10.8.   It worked quite fast in 10.7, but now it's super-slow and doesn't even seem to ever finish.
    I've tried re-installing 10.8 with no difference.
Anyone else having trouble with this?  Even a small dmg (~200MB) doesn't seem to work.
Unencrypted images seem to work OK (if not a little slow).
I realize that the encryption process will be slower but something is definately wrong with 10.8 disk utility in this regard.  I have 1TB+ free space.  I have tried with another user account as well.
My task was: (new disk image, read-write, 128bit encryption)

  • Disk Utility not running & disk utility icon changed?

    Hello.
I have an 8 month old MB, 2.4 Ghz, 4GB Ram, 160 GB HD, running 10.5.5. I normally do the updated from Apple when the updates come out.
Anyway, I was trying to reformat/erase an external hd; I didn't see the Disk Utility icon on my Dock. I had used Disk Utility before (last time was maybe a month or two ago). Turns out the program is on the dock, but it has a icon (a piece of paper with a pencil, brush and ruler in the shape of an A). I click on it, it jumps once and does nothing. I figure it needs to be reinstalled, but the DVD that came with the computer says I can't install OS X on this computer.
I booted from DVD, ran disk util from there and fixed permissions. still same issue. Also noticed that the Airport Utility now has the same icon (a piece of paper with a pencil, brush and ruler in the shape of an A), but the name is in an Asian language.
Any thoughts on how to get disk utility working and what is going on?
    Thanks

    Thanks
The icon on the dock is not the utility; it is an alias, a link to the actual utility.
Look in your Applications->Utility directory to see if the real Disk Utility is still there or not.
Ditto with Airport Utility. Is the real one still there?

You may have a corrupted preference file or a failing HD.
