Impossible to modify clip in imovie

In imovie 10.0 I can't modify the clips (slow motion, fast frw, instant rep, etc) because the fonction il grey in the menu "Modify". I had no problems with imovie 9.x.
Thanks
Demostene

I also have this issue, I would be interested to know if Slow motion 25/50% etc, FF works for anyone? Does anyone use it other than me in this world??
One of the most used tools in iMovie for me, select a clip ctrl + R should bring up the speed slider... NOPE!  Clicking modify in the menu and all speed options are greyed out, unless I double click the clip then do it in the clip editor?
Sometimes... very occassionaly (for some bizzare reason) I can get it to work without going into the clip editor, Apple, please FIX THIS RUBBISH ASAP! I brought this machine to use it, not have some flaky, half-arsed software that was obviously never tested!

Never mind, I discovered that you now have to crop in the timeline.

    1. remove xulrunner, icecat, and wireless_tools (assuming you didn't already remove wireless_tools when it asked you about it)
    2. install icecat again but this time modify the pkgbuild (change the depends  xulrunner=1.9.2.4 to xulrunner=1.9.2.6)
(the package was failing to build because the icecat pkgbuild specifies a specific version of xulrunner and the maintainer never changed it when the new version of xulrunner came out.)

  • Preview disabled, importing clips from imovie

I just got a Canon Optura 60 video camera.
I'm in a hurry to get the clips into final cut and the log and capture procedure is time consuming and confusing.
plus my preview is disabled in the log and capture window and I just read a long thread about this problem.
it seems to conclude that the solution is to deinstall quicktime 7 reinstall quicktime 6, which I can't do with 10.4.
I already figured out how to easily get the clips out of the camera and into iMovie, but I want to edit in Final Cut. I have a LaCie 250gig hard drive for media storage.
Is there an easy way to import the clips from iMovie to final cut pro HD 4.5? thanks

so far, by logging in the clip I even got preview to work, and the final cut is moving the clip around in the camera. but I still haven't managed to actually capture the clip. when I try capture now, it justs waits for time code.
when I log in the clip and click on capture clip, the clip appears in the preview window, and then I get an error message: "unable to locate a specified timecode. you may have specified a time code with insufficient room for a pre/post roll operation"
so how do I enter the time code?
or could it be that I did not enter time and date on video camera?
If anyone knows of a step by step book for idiots that says 1, plug in firewire, 2 go to log and capture, and so on, I would happily buy it.
    thanks ever so much

  • Importing clips from iMovie HD does not preserve capture date

    Hi,
I am importing iMovie HD projects into iMovie 09.
The clips in iMovie HD (originally imported from DV) have the correct capture date/time on them.
However, when I import these clips into iMovie 09, it does not preserve these dates for the events but instead chooses to use the "file create date/time" as the event date time.
Is this info lost forever in iMovie 09 or is there some setting that can use the original clip capture date info as the event date/time?
    Thanks.

  • Importing clips from iMovie HD to FCE4

Hi. Have read with interest a couple of questions on this same issue, with the advice from Tom Wolsky seemingly being to not mix the two applications and just get stuck in with FCE. However, i'm finding FCE difficult to like/get to grips with. But more importantly, after attending some Apple onetoone sessions, it seems my Canon camcorder might be a little long in the tooth and there may be some tape slippage as I was getting time code errors when trying to import directly to FCE. The fix seemed to be to capture the footage via iMovie and import to FCE using 'show package contents' route. Having now though imported some footage from a second tape, I have some of the clips showing as Offline for some reason. Is the trick to import clips from IMovie as per Tom's suggested route on 9/8/08?

I import video from my camera into iMovie 4, because that is the last version of iMovie, I believe, that was capable of flushing unwanted video off the hard drive, and I can bring an entire tape into iMovie, trim it down for FCE, and then get rid of the unwanted footage. iMovie 6, like Final Cut Express, is a nondestructive editor and can't erase unwanted footage from the hard drive, and as you know, video uses up hard drive space FAST. To get rid of discarded edits, you either have to use iMovie 4 or Final Cut Pro.
iMovie is also much easier to import video into than Final Cut Express, with all the latter's complicated controls. With iMovie, you just plug in your camera, iMovie then says "Camera Connected," and you hit Play and Import. Stone simple. Also, in iMovie you can hear the audio as it comes in, and if I remember right (it's been a while since I did it in FCE), you can't hear your audio tracks as your video imports into FCE. Not a big deal, but an annoyance.
Once the video is in iMovie, then I cut and trim the video to get rid of all substandard/unwanted stuff, and then Empty Trash, which erases the unwanted video off the hard drive, saving mucho space over the course of a project. Otherwise, you're just stuck with the unwanted video, and all it does is fill up your hard drive. Then you export (or "Share," in iMovie parlance) your video from iMove as a QuickTime movie, and drop that QT movie into Final Cut Express's Browser. Then create your FCE project from it.
The only objection I have ever seen to this procedure is people complaining that their QuickTime movie from iMovie has to be rendered in FCE before FCE can use it, and this takes a bit of extra time. Well, that's true, unless you export your video from iMovie in a form that FCE can use natively. Then it doesn't need to be rendered at all--it's just as though you had imported it from the camera directly into FCE. Most people don't know how to set up iMovie to do that.
Here's how I do it: (this is iMovie 4; I assume other versions are the same), Select Share > QuickTime and choose Expert Settings. On the next screen, select Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie, and click the Options button. In the Movie Settings window that this brings up, on the upper (video) part of it, under the Video checkbox, click the Settings button there, and for Compression Type choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, and under Compressor Quality, move the slider to Best, and click OK. Under the Sound checkbox, click Settings, and then choose Linear PCM, Stereo, and 48.000 kHz for Sound Settings. Under Render Settings, choose Qualty: Best. Just below that, uncheck the "Prepare for Internet Streaming" box. Then click OK, and the window will go away, and you're ready to export.
Give the video a name, and a place to save to, then click SAVE. The QuickTime movie that results from this can be dropped straight into FCE and requires no rendering; it works just as though you had imported it directly into FCE from your camera.

  • Importing clips from iMovie - jittery

Just got Final Cut Pro 5 and I'm having a problem with importing clips from iMovie into FCP5. The clips were fine in iMovie, but the images are jittery in FCP. I tried Apple Care, but they wanted to charge me $200 to answer my question eventhough I just bought the software yesterday!
any ideas most welcome - thanks

Nowhere is it advertised that iMovie is compatible with FCP.
One is a consumer format, with less features, like lack of timecode. The other is a professional format, which relies heavily on timecode.
Yes, output to tape from imovie, then capture with FCP.
#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
    Shane's Stock Answer #20:
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...

  • Importing clips to imovie hd from external hard drive

Ok it all started when i wanted to put an hour long clip into imovie HD. I had 54gb left on my computer and just before it finished it told me i did not have enough space on my startup disk.
so read forums and people said delete so i took other clips which i still want to edit, put them on to an external HD. that freed up a good 60gb more, so now with 115gb, it still did not work. if you can help that would be sweet
Secondary and MORE importantly, i went to transfer my clips from my external hard drive to Imovie HD. It came up with imovie could not parse it - 36. any ideas.
so then what i tried to do is to transfer it back to my internal hard drive, it came up with something about the movie having an atom. then it came up with Movie is not a movie file
now it comes up with clip in use. i am confused has ****
the other thing is it is not all my clips that are giving trouble but a lot are.
PLEASE it is massive project that has to be finished and burned by friday
    thank you

    thanks for the reply
my drive is formatted correctly and i have transferred through this exact hard drive before with no problems
It just so happens the one time i dont have 2 copied of my work is the time is messes up
I phoned Apple, they believe it is my codecs but some of my clip and have been pixailized and damaged now. does anyone have a sweet program that can convert my clips

How do I get home video clips from iMovie Mac to iMovie iPad?  Surely there is some degree of cross-compatibility?  I have a load of clips in iMovie on my MBP that I wanna download to my iPad2 so that I can edit movies on the move.  Any ideas?  (The clips are in a .mov format, they have been imported / converted into this format in iMovie, original files were from a JVC camcorder in some other strange format.)

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places.  I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file.  There must be something else that's missing.  My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive.  If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess.  I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={  Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period.  I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive.  Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me).  As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

  • Can I edit out the middle of a video clip in iMovie?

I know how to crop the beginning or end of a video, but I would like to crop out a section in the middle. I don't want to lose the part following the cropped frames. What must I do? Thanks for any advice you can offer. Miriam

Can I edit out the middle of a video clip in iMovie?
    Yes.
    What must I do?
    Basically you have three options:
    1) If the clip is in the "Event" window, simply select (i.e., set and adjust if necessary "in" and 'out" points) the segment you want and transfer it to your "Project" window and place it where you want it.
    2) If the clip is already in the "Project" window, simply select (i.e., set and adjust if necessary "in" and 'out" points) the segment you want to keep...
    a) and press the "Split" option in the edit menu (or the "Split Clip" option in the context menu) to divide the clip into three segments. Then select each of the segments you don't want and press the "Delete" key to remove them from the "Project" window.
    b) or, even easier, simply press the "Trim to Selection" option in the "Edit" menu.
All of these work flows do not physically remove anything from the "Event" but merely perform a non-destructive edit of the project for the purpose of later output.
