Impossible to mount two drives in firewire

I have 2 external drives (500 GB and 80 GB). I bought two boxes identical thinking that i could plug them together on the same firewire port to keep the second free. The first drive mount but the second makes the first unmount and it doesn't mount itself either.
For the moment, i manage to mount both because i plugged one via usb, but i would like to find a solution to use them on firewire.
Both are self powered.
For info, i tried on a linux PC, and there only one mounts. In the terminal, there is no mention of the second drive.
Chipset: Prolific PL3507 Combo Device
Is there any genius having the solution?
Thanks

The Prolifics have been a bit of a problem for many...

Do you have the latest Firmware on it...

Check your chip version... it may require a PC to install the Firmware update, unless they've changed.

  • Daisy chain two external drives via Firewire, then connect one via USB to the TC?

    Hi,
I have two external drives that have both Firewire and USB ports. My 1st generation 500 gb Time Capsule (maybe all of them?) only has USB ports so up til now, I have connected one or the other drive via USB. (I've tried to connect both to a powered USB hub but one drive has problems showing up. At this point I only use the one drive that shows up and connect it directly with no hub to the Time Capsue.)
My question is: Can I daisy chain the two drives via Firewire and then connect one of them (probably the one that has no problems connecting with USB) to the Time Capsule via USB?
    Second, somewhat-related problem...
I don't know why one drive isn't connecting very well when directly connected to the Time Capsule. Both are Fantom drives. One is a 1TB, the one that has prblems connecting is a 250GB. I've tried connecting directly or through a powered hub. The 1B has no problems, the 250 gb won't show up most of the time and disconnects itself fairly quickly if it does connect. I've switched cables; that hasn't helped. The 1TB stays connected most of the time but sometimes it disconnects too. I suspect the Time Capsule just isn't able to deal with external drives so I don't puch it. It would be nice to be able to have both drives accessable through the TC though.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers,
    John

Doing some experimentation, connecting the drives directly to the MBP:
    - Neither of the two drives Firewire daisy-chained and going through the powered USB hub connected to the MBP mount. I was using old aliases on desktop.*They don't show up on network otherwise. (Each drive self-mounts with both Firewire and USB direct connections.)
*Even after making new aliases, neither drive will mount using their new aliases when directly connected (not through hub) with USB or Firewire (and Thunderbolt adapter.) That's weird.
    - Both the 240 gb and the 1TB drives going through powered hub connected to MBP mount by themselves.
    - Two drives daisy-chained via Firewire and one drive connected to the MBP via Firewire (and Thunderbolt adapter) self-mount. No surprise there but that doesn't help me as I want to have the drives further away from the MBP and connected to the Time Capsule, which doesn't have a Firewire port anyway...
    - All of the USB and the Firewire cables work as does the Thunderbolt adapter. I tested them.
I wonder.... I have a Firewire to what appears to be an Ethernet connector. I wonder if that would be any good. I'm afraid to try it though...

  • Mounting secondary drive from old G4 via Firewire to new iMac?

I just got my new iMac up and running (god is it gorgeous). The 'transfer files' thing in the initial install pulled all the programs and user settings from my old G4's primary drive perfectly, but the G4 has a second IDE drive in it where I kept much of the data. When I boot the G4 with the "T" held down, only the primary drive shows up on the iMac... how do I get the iMac to recognize and pull data from the other drive in the old tower?
    Drew

    Hi-
When I boot the G4 with the "T" held down, only the primary drive shows up on the iMac... how do I get the iMac to recognize and pull data from the other drive in the old tower?
This is a limit of firewire target mode, only the master drive will show.
If the secondary drive is bootable, connected to the master connector (end connector, not middle), and jumpered as master, you will be able to mount the drive in FTD mode.
Alternatively, copy the files from the secondary drive to the primary drive, and transfer from there.

  • Fast User Switching with Mounted Network Drive?

I have a headless G4 Cube running 10.5.8 with a 2TB firewire drive plugged in for storage accessable to any of my macs here at home. I can access it fine with my 2 desktops over ethernet and wirelessly. Recently we decided to consolidate our 2 desktops into one using the muliple users feature. Seems to work fine, and both accounts can access the shared drive. They are logging in with the cube's admin credentials, and the shared drive is set to ignore permissions. I have the drive set to mount on login with a startup item in the system login items prefs. As long as I logout before switching users, everything is good.
The problem arises with Fast User Switching which we'd love to be able to use. I can't figure out how to connect to the drive in one account without the 2nd account then seeing it as a volume without proper permissions, then that account creates a new volume mount for it (which doesn't work with iTunes properly and seems to cause other wierd issues).
Example: So say 'user1' logs in, mounts the drive 'Jukebox'. everything seems OK so far. 'Jukebox' is on the desktop and iTunes finds the music. Now I fast user switch to 'user2' and there is a 'Jukebox' on the desktop with the red minus icon indicating I don't have permissions to access it. If I then browse the network and mount the drive, I end up with ANOTHER 'Jukebox' on the desktop. BUT iTunes doesn't see it properly. If I look in the /Volumes/ folder with the Terminal, I see a mountpoint for 'Jukebox' (with the owner of 'user1' group 'staff') and now a new mountpoint called 'Jukebox-1' (with the owner of 'user2' group 'staff').
It seems when you mount a AFP drive, it creates the Volume with the current user and staff group, but switching to another user then can't access that when it sees it in the /Volumes folder. You try to mount again and it creates a NEW mountpoint, names it with a '-1' at the end and you can use that (but iTunes cant).
So... how does one use a shared drive that you want on BOTH users desktops with Fast User Switching turned on? Is there a way to have the drive mounted BEFORE either user logs in, such that it will be seen as any other local drive (which doesn't have the issue)??
Or is there some other way I can attach to the network volume in each account on login so both have access to music and videos with full permissions?
I'm really stumped here after 2 hrs of googling, searching here and trying things.
    TIA

I've not had any luck with the suggestions in the link either.
Here's two other approaches I've tried and failed with:
    1. Creating a new share point on the cube itself so that one user can mount it as a different volume. Then the issue is that I still don't have a volume named "Jukebox" available to each user when switching. I DO have access now to the data from both accounts, but under 2 different mount points (volume names) and the xml file for iTunes is hard coded with the path for each mp3 including the "Jukebox" volume name... so no go.
    2. Tried figuring out a way I could script a mounting of the share with the terminal thinking I could then run that shell script at startup. Can't seem to get the sytax right. If I create a directory in /Volumes and mount and afp share to it, it takes on the ownership of root/wheel which I can't access in the finder and can't seem to change.
BUT I'll keep playing with both these ideas a bit... the first one might be overcome with a bit of logic and the 2nd if I can get the syntax right to mount the share with afp_mount and give it the correct ownership/permissions such that when a user logs in she/he sees the volume on the desktop and has full r/w access to it.
thanks again. if you offhand know the syntax for that, let me know

  • Very slow transfer speeds with external hard drives through Firewire and US

    Hi All,
My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little. Apple support suggested I post my issue here. Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Kappy, thanks for the information.
So I rejigged my setup a tad. My RAID 0 is still FW800, the second drive is back on FW400 on the back port, and the third is USB 2.0 on the back as well.
It's interesting to note that I saw the FW800 taking a bandwidth hit if the FW400 drives was being read/written to. For example, if I was averaging 50-60MB/sec on the FW800 drives and copy something large to the FW400 drive, each drive averages out to about 30/MB second, roughly half the FW800 speed I was getting. The USB while the slowest didn't cause any slowness on the FW drives.
Here are my Xbench results. These results are from each drive being benchmarked individually with no other drives being tested at the same time.

  • Re-mounting Ejected Drives and Flash Memory

After using an external drive (both Firewire and USB,) I often eject it to be sure that I do not unintentionally work with directories and files stored on it. To use the device again, I disconnect and reconnect to cause it to be mounted.
Can I re-mount the device with a script or UNIX command? Or some other method which does not require physical action? Advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Kenichi.Thanks for your reply.
If I eject the disk then it is no longer seen by Disk Utility and thus an external interrupt (power, unplug etc.,) is necessary to reconnect the device and mount the volume(s.)
I now understand that I sould be un-mounting the volume, not ejecting the device to accomplish my requirement of making it's filesystems unavailable.
As you point out mounting a volume can be done with Disk Utility. I was hoping to it with a script or Automator workflow. There are no Automator actions to do this and Disk Utility does not have a scripting dictionary so it looks like I'll have to dig out the UNIX manuals to do this.
    Further advice is always welcome.

  • Cannot mount external drives

    Hi all!
    I have an 2010 imac i5 32GB RAM, running on 10.9.2.
All of a sudden my machine does not mount ANY extrenal hard drive. It recognises them in Disk Utility, but they appear greyed and cannot be mounted. Not even disk repair. Last week though the drives were mounting on the system without any problems.
Yesterday I have upgraded the OS to 10.9.2. (from 10.6.8). Still the same problem, the drives are recognisable in DU but cannot be mounted.
All of the disks I've tried are NTFS format (originally formatted on a pc). Funny thing is I have VMware Fusion on my mac runing a virtual Windows 7 pc. Windows do recognise the drives and mount them without problem, but not the mac.
Also note that I'm using Tuxera NFS to work with these drives with no problem so far, until now.
Also checked the cables, I'm connecting the drives though USB ports, they are ok.
    Any suggestions?

just guessing you are using USB to mount the external. you may need to use two usb ports to mount the drive. that means a cable with two usb connectors which should provide enough power to the external.

  • Jaguar OS no longer is able to mount external drives

I am using a PowerMac 7600 with a Sonnet G4 processor (OS 10.2.8) to download streaming audio to an external hard drive. This has served me very well for a number of years. All of a sudden, the 7600 can no longer mount an external drive, neither USB nor FW. The Drive shows up in Disk Utility but the name of the volume is grayed out. The problem exists with several different drives which mount OK to my MacBook. Using the Disk Utility to attempt to mount the drive has no effect. Neither Rebooting nor Repair of Permissions solves the problem.
    Suggestions please.

  • Mount network drives

    Hi,
How can I create a script that will connect to a windows server with a username and password and mount network drives on my desktop, and how do I set this script to automatically run when I login?

Hey guys. I'm glad I found this post. I'm trying for the same result. I currently work at a school in which every teacher has a computer that connects to the local network by signing in with a username and password. However, my computer has fried and they can't get me a new one until... well... whenever. I've brought my MacBook Pro in and have connected to the internet which is great but I need to access a network (H:) drive in order to update progress reports and report cards.
I don't know much and the IT guy is impossible to reach and hasn't returned any emails. I just need to connect to that one folder. I was assuming and ftp or and smb would do the trick but I have no idea what server I would need to try and access through the finder, applescript, or terminal. I did an ipconfig on another teachers computer and got a few ip's as well as the folder's location on the network 'server_4\folder' (H:) if that helps. I've tried connected by ftp through the finder to all of the ip's and have gotten an error saying that I can't connect. I have also did a whatsmyip.com search for my root ip address and have tried the same approach. For some reason, it connects by says my username and password were incorrect.
Well that's about everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How to mount external drives on startup without login?

I have a Mac Mini that runs as a server on my network. It has external FireWire drives attached, and I need them to be mounted at machine startup. By default they do not mount until a user interactively logs in.
There was a fix for this in Tiger, involving a NetInfo setting; but since NetInfo Manager and niutil are now gone, I don't know how to make this work. I can mount the drive manually by sshing into the Mini and using a diskutil mount command, but that is very cumbersome and doesn't make the drive available for startup activities that need to access it.

  • New ATA/IDE Drive - Mac OS X Won't Mount the Drive!

    Hello out there!
I have a problem- I installed a new 80GB WD ATA drive to my old PM G3 - everything went in smoothly, hooked it up to the "Ultra ATA" slot on the motherboard, and booted. (It is now the only disk, set to Master - jumpers, not cable select)
The main objective is to get out of OS 8/9 and get into X. I put in the OS X install disc, and get all the way to "Select Destination" - the drive is no where to be seen.
I went into the installer logs, says that the drive didnt mount, and it tried again, then gave up.
I then went into Disk Utility, click on the Disk, saw the Volume didnt mount... Erased the Disk, to Mac OS X E - and it appeared to erase - but - still no mount...
I have erased the Disk too... still no mount, the computer clearly knows the disk is there, but wont mount the volume.
Never had a problem like this before, and you guys are so impressive!
Hope you can help me out!
    Thanks!

Without the 646U2-402 chip on your motherboard, you have the "Heartbreaker" Blue & White G3. When upgraded to a Hard Drive faster than the original 4, 6, or 8 GB drives that shipped with the units originally, they become flaky -- producing crashes, freeze ups, and eventually disk corruption. But never repeatable enough to diagnose a firm problem.
The solution for most users has been to install a PCI Hard drive Controller, IDE or SCSI at your option, and live happily ever after. (Recently, the cheapest Mac-specific IDE Controllers have been new at NewEgg.com. The cheapest bootable SCSI is the used Apple/ATTO UL2D).
"Happily Ever After" that is, until you try to transfer large amounts of data over FireWire. At which point you may be forced to install a controller for FireWire to get satisfaction in using that Bus. Oh, and the Blue & White can not share its drives over FireWire using FireWire Target Disk mode, either.

  • Who is mounting my drive?

Every night at 11:45PM one of my drives gets mounted. How can I figure out who is mounting it? I suspect it might be a calendar script from a deleted calendar? But I have searched all files (with grep) looking for an occurance of 'disk4s2' which is what is getting mounted, regardless of the volume name. Nothing interesting shows up (a log file showing someone noticed that it got mounted, and a mounted items file). How can I figure out who is mounting it? I'm sure I have done something stupid at some time.

Thanks so much for helping me look into this issue!
It is actually a freshly formatted mac volume. Before you ask, I am running CCC and the support guys there tell me that it is not mounting the drive. Looking in the plist does not reveal any task that wants to run at that time. Also I have all the scheduled tasks turned off at the moment.

  • Can't boot from from mounted external drive.

I have recently purchased a Western Digital 1 TB My Book Studio external drive, for backup for my 20 inch imac Intel Core 2 Duo,  2.4 GHz mid 2007, 3 GB ram, 320 GB internal drive, running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I have formatted the external drive, GUID partition, and installed Snow Leopard on it. The drive mounts in all modes (Firewire 800, FW400, and USB).
It shows up as a bootable drive in the System Preferences->Startup Disk pane. However, I cannot get it to boot in any mode - I get only a blank white screen on startup, and after waiting 15 minutes I turned off power and restarted pressing the option key; the white screen then showed only the internal imac drive. Then the desktop still shows the external My Book external drive on the desktop.
The Western Digital website shows this drive to be bootable on Intel Macs.
How can I get the drive to boot from this external drive?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Donaldb

Ok, please excuse my extreme ignorance on Macs.
I was holding down the command key (the one with the apple on it) instead of the option key (which perversely says alt on it!!!)
The whole thing works fine when I do it right. Stupid me.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Extremely Slow Disk Access from External Drives (USB & Firewire)

Following the upgrade to 10.6.2 (from 10.6.1), my computer is communicating extremely slowly with all external drives (both Firewire 400 and USB). File transfers which used to take less than a minute now take 5-10 minutes (less than 1 GB). Peering into the Console, I see messages for each aspect of a file reading: Nov 13 12:30:12 Nautilus /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[152]: Possible unresolved transaction race -105/filename
(Nautilus is the name of the computer)
By "each aspect", I mean that for Pages files, it provides a message for Quicklook,(null) , Contents,(null) , and filename,(null).
All disks are in good health, formatted as FAT32 for ease of use with all OS types, and are SATA.
Again, this occurred immediately following the installation of 10.6.2 (both Software Update and Combo). I've seen similar errors online with iTunes libraries on network drives, but this is on directly connected drives.
I normally wouldn't ask this, but, is there a way to reinstall 10.6.1 over .2? At this point, Time Machine would likely cause me to lose other data as well in a full revert, since it has been more than a few days.

I have various personal files backed up on these drives (not system data): music, pictures, documents, etc.
FAT32 should not be an issue, as I have used these drives for over 2 years with Tiger, Leopard, and then Snow Leopard with nay an issue, until now. Additionally, while the Time Machine backup may be an archive, it is the sole occupier of an HFS-formatted partition which is not exhibiting the issue. I only included that information since it is physically on the same drive as a partition (FAT32) which is being troublesome to rule out driver/hardware problems.
Bottom line: All of my drives worked perfectly on 10.6.1 (and continue to do so on my other Macs (10.5.8), but do not on 10.6.2. I was only looking for a potential solution to my computer's specific issue, not a statement that my "compromise" is the cause of my problems.
Actually, since Apple fully supports read/write access on FAT32 partitions, I should, indeed, be able to "have all things all ways...", no offense intended.

  • How to set up my mac mini server to use two drives seamlessly?

I have a mid 2010 mac mini server, with OSX Lion installed. It has dual 500gb hard drives.
I've been moving all my important files to it, and I've always assumed that once I filled one disc, it would seamlessly transfer over to the other and continue backing up. This does not seem to be the case.
I'm at roughly 495gb of data, and when I try to move a 10gb file onto my server, it tells me that I don't have enough disc space to continue the operation.
What can I do to make use of both drives?
    -Thanks

It sounds like what you're asking for is to have the two drives in a RAID 0, where the two 500 Gb drives look like a single 1 Tb drive. I'm not sure the exact procedure for installing RAID 0 on a mini's internal drives, but the process would involve backing up, reconfiguring for RAID (which destroys all data,) restoring data from the backup, and more risk than I would personally find acceptable. I'd expect to lose a full day with the backup and restore steps. I can guarantee, there will be pain.
Instead, I'd suggest looking at what's consuming the 500Gb, and seeing if there are particular folders that can be moved. For example, a shared folder is pretty easy. Copy it over. In file sharing setup, edit the share to point to the new location. Make sure remote users disconnect, and reconnect to the "new" share. When you're happy there is no data loss, delete the old location.
User's home directories can also move, but the process has a few more steps, and depends on how the accounts are built (local vs. OD)
If the majority of the data is in a single "your backup files" folder, shared or otherwise, then I would just set up a second folder on the second drive and write to it, leaving the first alone. If it is truly a backup, then you could make the first folder read-only at this point for extra protection. If you go the 2 folder route, keep in mind your boot drive is operating with 1% free space, I like my drives to have at least 15% free, and OS drives more like 25% (you'll find some range in recommended %-free, but most will agree 1% is too little) so move SOME stuff to the new folder, before closing the old.
