Impossible to run FCP on iMac?

I just bought an Aluminium dual core Intel iMac. I was just about to buy a copy of FCP but the spec says that I need an AGP or PCI Quartz Extreme graphics card. But my iMac won't let me upgrade the graphics card!
Is the inbuilt graphics card insufficient to run FCP? There is no work-around?

I have a 24" Aluminum at home that I use. I run Studio 2. The only thing I did not install was Color because of system requirements and recommendations from the boards here.
I maxed out the ram to 4gb before I even fired the thing up. My aluminum is running Tiger 10.4.11. My Final Cut is currently at version 6.0.2. I have had no problems running Final Cut. Motion was a little iffy but that was because of a bug which I think I cleared up with an update.
Don't plan on running multiple streams of uncompressed HD footage, but it will work very well for you. I would suggest though that you get a decent external firewire 800 drive. I purchased one of the CalDigit ones. It runs great.
Good Luck.

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • Best minimum iMac for running FCP Studio

A client of mine has hundreds of hours of tapes\film she wants to turn into a film. I want to set her up with an 'inexpensive' iMac powerful enough to run FCP Studio ...
I want to transfer (up-rez) all her footage to an HD ProRes format (not sure which yet), so she will be working in HD.
She needs to be able to view her footage and rough cut it into manageable chunks. Then I'll help her with the editing ... right up to final post-production, at which point we will move it into my studio which has all the bells and whistles.
So I'm looking for just enough power to capture all the footage, to work in HD, but not so much that she goes broke setting up an edit suite she may only use for this one film.
    All ears,
    Ben

Check the minimum system requirements for FCP Studio. That will tell you what minimum hardware is required to use it. According to the Apple site:
*Minimum System Requirements to Install All Applications*
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of RAM (2GB of RAM recommended for working with compressed HD and uncompressed SD sources; 4GB of RAM recommended for working with uncompressed HD sources)
ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)
    128MB of VRAM
Display with 1280-by-800 resolution or higher
Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later
    QuickTime 7.6 or later
    DVD drive for installation

  • PROS and CONS of running FCP on NEW iMACS?

    Hi gang...
It's a sad day -- I've been running fcp 5.1.4 using Tiger on my PowerMac G5 (dual core 2.3GHz, 2.5GB of memory) for years now -- few real problems besides operator error.
    All has been good.
Along comes a client shooting XDCAM footage and suddenly I'm feeling VERY behind the times. I'm unable to edit with this codec since it's not compatible with fcp 5.0. And since my G5 is pre-Intel processor, I'm unable to upgrade to fcp 6 or higher (is this accurate?)
So what are the pros and cons of purchasing one of the new iMacs to run fcp 7? Although my G5 was installed with a DeckLink card, I never did any external monitoring using an NTSC monitor. Most of the stuff I'm doing is long form programming, straight cuts/dissolves, minimal graphics. I'm creating alot of content for the web, delivering some (non-broadcast) masters on dvd.
Do the iMacs have external monitoring capabilities? (I'm under the impression they don't)
Am I really at the point where I need to purchase new hardware? (I've been so happy with my G5.)
What will be my minimum investment, and is the Macmini ($599) a viable option?
And finally, does Joni love Chachi?
    Thanks

FCS3 (FCP7) is only supported on intel processors. FCS2 (FCP6) runs fine on G5s.
iMacs do not have external monitoring capabilities beyond using firewire out for DV. I don't know how the mini-dvi port works with something like the original Matrox MXO. It may work fine.
Still, there is no way to hook up esata drives, replace the video card with something that supports Motion or Color or add any one of dozens of nifty bells and whistles.
The mac mini is a poor choice. Lousy graphics support and NO expansion capabilities.
    Get a MacPro.

  • FCP on iMac 20"

One of the main reasons I purchased the iMac was to transition from my PC video editor to FCP. Now three issues have come up suggesting I have made a bad purchase.
    1. The iMac is set up to run on a FAT32 hard drive, yet I have just read that the FAT32 system still has a 4GB file size limit. Many of my movies will need more than 4GBs - is this limitation still the case?
    2. I was told by the Apple Store to run FCP on the iMac 20" as is would be no problem, unaware of the ATI card memory upgrade that was available. I now read that upgrading the card's memory after the fact is next to impossible. Is this true?
And 3, to run FCP in a professional setting, not only do I need a second display to extend my desktop to, I also need the ability to have a large screen (LCD or plasma) for the preview output to be shown on. I have now learned I can only have one or the other, but not both. Even though this card has the ability to run two displays and a monitor. Is this true?
    Thanks for your help!
iMac (early 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Also Running Windows XP Pro SP2

    Hi Andy,
I was unaware that the Intel Mac were shipping with FAT32 formatted drives instead of HFS+. If that is true, then you will likely have trouble with files larger than 4GB as that is a huge limitation of that file system.
FCP will run very nicely with the standard 128MB VRAM on that X1600 vid card. It may run a little better with the 256MB version, but that card really shines when it comes to gaming. If you are not gaming, then I wouldn't worry.
You are correct that you cannot upgrade the video card or the VRAM at all. It is integrated onto the midplane and cannot be changed.
The card is capable of using an extended desktop, but Apple disables that feature. There are hacks out there that will re-enable it, but I would hesitate to run anything that might possibly void my warrantee.
Honestly, it sounds to me like you bought the wrong computer. If you want more VRAM or at least the option to upgrade it, and if you want the extended desktop - those just aren't what the iMac was designed for.
Did you buy this at a local retailer like the CompUSA on East State or did you drive into the Apple Store in Schaumburg? Or was a BTO from the Apple Online Store? You might want to see if it could be exchanged for a PowerMac if you cannot live with the limitations of the machine.

  • Fcp on imac: a good idea?

    Hi,
I am deciding to make a purchase of an imac running fcp and adobe aftereffects. I know the ideal is to get a macpro but the macpro is almost 2x as much as the imac. From everyone's experience here, would I be able to get by comfortably using the imac?
    Any help appreciated.

From what I've heard in the 3D community (Cinema 4D), the new iMacs are very impressive. They even surpass some of the Mac Pros since the new iMacs use newer chips, i5 I think. My Mac Pro is fast, but uses dual Quad-core Intel Xeon chips which are slower.
It doesn't sound like you need a hardcore high-end system for real time effects in an hour, so your next thing is to invest in a nice external RAID drive using at least FireWire 800 speeds and set that as your scratch disk.
All this is assuming you don't need to capture footage from tape. You can't put a Kona or DeckLink in that thing, so you'd have to get an external capture device.
    Those are my humble thoughts.

  • Impossible Tiger install on my imac G4

Hi everybody ! I'm new (well, almost, it's my second post) here, and I've been advised to post a new topic concerning my problem, so here I am...
First of all, let's start with a little explanation (not that small, actually) : I've bought, a year ago from now, an Imac G4 20". It's, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful (if not THE most) computers ever created, and I wanted to get one before there disappearance, with the arrival of the G5 generation. So I bought one (with a really nice discount, because of the new imacs arriving and all...) and thought that I would live happily ever after with it. I had also bought an Ibook G4 14" 1,33Ghz, a month before.
Everything went quite fine (a freeze when running limewire and mplayer at the same time but that might have been because of the 256 Mo of memory) till I bought Tiger. I bought the complete system, not an update version with a computer or something like that. Anyway, I bought Tiger and the troubles began. I started with a simple upgrade, from 10.3.9 to 10.4 (something that had always worked perfectly fine for me on all my macs from OS 9.1 to Panther).
Once the installation process completed, the imac restarted as usual, all by itself, and after a few seconds, stopped on a light blue screen (I say light as it seemed to me that it was lighter than the usual blue background behind the loading sequence) and stood like that. After a few minutes (like 10 or something) I decided to reboot, in safe mode (reboot button + shift) and after a really long startup sequence (which, as I learned later, was normal). It worked, I could use my computer, minus all the disabled options. So I thought that it was certainly a problem of compatibility with an application or something plugged in the computer. So I checked the disk and repaired what had to be repaired, saved all my data on my external FW HD, and tried to :
    - restart and zap the pram : same light blue screen, safe mode only
    - format the HD : same result
    - custom format of the HD (9 times) : same result
    - start again after having unplugged all the non apple stuff (ethernet link, HP printer, trackball) : same result
As I didn't want to be stuck with the safe mode (which is really useful, don't misunderstand me, but when you buy a complete system, you're supposed to be able to use it) till the end of times, I called the hotline, and after having once again tried all of the staff mentionned above, the guy in charge of my case sent me a small app, which, once run on my imac (still in safe mode) produced a file, listing obscure and unreadable (well, for me anyway... lol) datas, file that I sent back.
After a week or two of intense waiting, I decided to call back . The guy seemed to have lost my file (breathe... breathe... breathe...). He called me back after a few days to tell me that the datas had been analysed and the conclusion was chathat my imac could not get Tiger, unless something was changed in the computer itself (and it was not the memory, as I had only the 256 Mo, factory installed). The surgical act could apparently be done in an apple center, but I had no mean of transport at that time , and was really starting to get tired about all this. The guy told me that I was not the first one to report this bug, and that it seemed to concern certain models of imacs G4 20" only. Then, he tried to sell me an apple care, which I refused. So I reinstalled panther, which works perfectly fine and installed Tiger on my ibook (something that I originally didn't want to do) which works perfectly fine too.
I forgot to mention that apple sent me, in the early days of this situation, another copy of Tiger, as they thought that the problem might have come from the DVD itself. As I used the DVD I bought on my ibook later, I guess it's not the case. So I forgot all about that till I found this forum (I have exposed my problem on the french forum of macgeneration.com but without any success). So if someone knows about this particular issue, or even has experienced it (as it seems to concern imac G4 20" only) please help me... lol and thank you for having read me till the end.
PS : And please forget the mistakes. My english is not what it used to be.

The problem may be that you only have 256 Mo of RAM. That's the bare minimum, and many have found that it is difficult to do anything but word processing with that minimum. If for any reason even a small part of that RAM is damaged, the installation may not work properly. I strongly recommend going to http://www.crucial.com/ and upgrade to at least 512 Mo (or MB, which is the U.S. term for the same) of RAM if you still desire to upgrade to Tiger for some of the features it offers, or a program you know only to run in Tiger. And when you do, backup your data, and be sure you have plenty of hard disk space available and try to Archive and Install as described below:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
P.S. Your English is very good and clear. Keep up the good work!

  • Excel 2011 version 14.4.8 running on an iMac gets "out of memory" messages.

HELP!!!   Excel 2011 running on an iMac with OS 10.10.2 and 16GB Ram gets "out of memory" messages.  When I monitor processes with "Activity Monitor", I am using less than half of my RAM.  The Excel workbook has many sheets and also some macros.  The basic workbook has been running for about two and half years starting in August 2012 without any problems until I upgraded to Yosemite in early December 2014.  Now I often have to restore the entire file content because it gets corrupted after not being able to save the file because of the "out of memory" message.  I can take a file and its content that ran fine a year ago and run it today and it will eventually get corrupted and get the "Out of memory" message after saving/quitting/re-opening the file any where from 6 to 15 to 25 times.  I think I need to have more memory allocated to Excel, but Yosemite doesn't provide any way for the user to interact with the memory management process.  I have also experienced the very same problem on my MacBook Pro that runs Yosemite.  I have worked file/path name length issues, closely inspected the macros that normally don't run except when activated with a user pressed button, and made sure I don't have any weird links within the workbook or even links to another file outside the workbook.  This problem seems to get worse as a continue to fill up the spread sheet with more financial data.  This Excel workbook is used to manage my club's finances; I am the club treasurer.  I have searched the internet for clues about similar problems and have found none!
My iMac is a 27-inch, Late 2009 with a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 Processor.  It includes 16GB of 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM.  The hard drive is a fussed 1TB rotating HD with 128 GB SSD.  This hardware has been running for about 27 months.  I am a very advanced Mac user that programs Excel and Filemaker and repairs Macs for others.

Given the caveat, have you tried reinstall of Office? Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted.  After upgrading to Yosemite I had to reinstall my Office 2011.  No crashes.
The current version of Office 2011 is 14.4.8.
First - find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768
Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011:
    http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/
    Then Reinstall from DVD
    Then enter your Product #
After successfully reinstalling Office 2011,  update your Office product using the Software update within Office called Microsoft Update or going to the Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.
It may take a few times before you get to final upgrade to current Office version.
It should be 14.4.8 as of current date.

My brother sent me a mini-CD, a "pocket" CD. He thought it would run on my iMac G5. I put it in and no icon appeared. Pressing eject didn't eject it either. Had to restart and hold eject to get it out.
Does anyone know if the smaller, mini CDs are supposed to run on iMac G5s?

  • How to run FCP on an iBook without Quartz Extreme?

Hi, I would like to be able to run FCP 5 on my existing iBook G4 (1.2GHz with 512MB RAM). Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio should run fine but I believe FCP will not launch without a Quartz Extreme graphics adapter (and I don't have the cash to upgrade to a MacBook Pro!) I have heard there is a hack available to allow FCP 5 to run on lower-spec graphics chips... anyone know where I could find this hack? Are there any associated issues?
    Cheers,
    Tom

Of the two, target mode would be far more efficient (and less risky -- in terms of software data corruption). I have in the past installed OS X on a machine with a poor DVD drive, so iLife should be no problem.

I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol.  This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C.  The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem.  By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly.  An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification  for this model is
    Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
    Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac  is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely.  Has anyone experienced this problem.

When was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further.
