Impossible to use iPhone 4s with Megafon Russia carrier

I've bought iPhone 4s in Apple Store Amsterdam, SIM-free, which is confirmed by Apple support.
I can activate it with SIM cards from a number of mobile operators like T-Mobile (UK), MTS (Russia), but it doesn't work at all with neither SIM card of my own carrir Megafon (Russia). ICCID of Megafon cards are 18 symbols. ICCID of MTS is 20 and T-Mobile has 19 digits. It was impossible to unlock neither with 5.0.1 (default firmware) nor with 5.1 which I have now.
Apple Support view: during activation they see ICCID in "wrong" format which has letter 'F' inside, so they say that "Device may be damaged, blah-blah-blah"
Megafon Support view: all Megafon SIM cards have 18 digit ICCID, according to standard the missing digits are replaced with letter 'F'. All iPhone 4s sold in Russia through Megafon carrier are activatable.
So basically I'm stuck since neither party accepts a responsibility for this problem.

That means they are not authorized or certified by Apple to carry or service the iPhone. If you choose to use an iPhone on thier network, it may or may not function properly. If it does not, Apple can not help you. You will need to take it up with the carrier.
MTS and Beeline are the only supported carriers in Russia according to this document: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? See other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Yes u can. I upgrades my wife's phone and I use the new iphone 5 with my number. Take it your carrier and get a different SIM card. Bring your ID and u must be the primary account user.

There is no approved method to downgrade. Your attempt to load a non-standard iOS file is causing the error. If you want to use your phone, you are going to have to try and restore it to the latest iOS compatable for that device which is iOS 7.0.4, otherwise it will not work and you will continue to see the error. Apple is no longer signing anything below the current iOS, so it will never activate.

Can you post a screen shot of what you are seeing?
I just looked in my contacts - when I open up a contact - the phone number(s) is(are) displayed on the left under the name and title information
What you are describing is what I see when I tap on "Details" in my message app - it shows just the name with the phone and FaceTime icon along with an "i"

Then as you've tried resetting the phone, the next step is to restore it from the latest backup. If that doesn't work, restore it as new, and if that doesn't work take it to Apple.

I got the splitter, (see link below), but the mic does not seem to work. Apparently, there's a difference between a mic port and a line-in port. Mic ports are powered by the computer, line-in ports are not. They expect a powered signal to come from the input device. The iMac has a line-in port.
I downloaded an app called Line-in that is supposed to give back the ability to use unpowered mics with Macs that lost the abiliy after a system update. It did not work for me. I guess my iMac never had the ability to use unpowered mics.
So I ordered the USB Stereo Audio Adapter below. It's basically a sound card that plugs into a USB port and will work with an unpowered mic. It has not arrived yet. I'll let you know how it goes.

After each step, toggle FaceTime and iMessage off and then on in Settings > Messages and Settings > FaceTime.
Update to the latest version of iOS.
Ensure that your iPhone is set to the correct time zone. Tap Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: If Set Automatically is on but the incorrect time zone is displayed, turn Set Automatically off and then choose the correct time zone, date, and time. Then turn Set Automatically on again.
Ensure that FaceTime has not been restricted: Settings > General > Restrictions > FaceTime.
Verify that you can send SMS messages. You need a valid SMS messaging plan to activate FaceTime.
Contact your carrier to verify that there are no restrictions or blocks on text messages. Blocks on text messaging will prevent iMessage and FaceTime registration.
If you are unable to activate iMessage or FaceTime on a device after remote wiping it, wait at least 24 hours and try again.
If "Waiting for Activation" is displayed, leave FaceTime and iMessage enabled for 24 hours. Toggling FaceTime or iMessage off and on will cause the registration process to start over.
