Impossible to work: slow, slow, slow !!!

Since a few days my software is very, very slow. In every action(share), the hourglass sets off, sometimes during almost one minute. Of this fact I manage no more to work.

Ipods automatically have a one year warrany unless you have violated the terms. But you can pay to extend the warranty. It depends, they may fix it for free or they may charge a bit. Im not entirely sure. But id say theres a good chance that they may fix it for free. With battery replacements, ive heard that they give you an entirely new ipod with a charge of $80. So i think it depends

  • Is Apple working on Mavericks slowness?

Once I installed OSX 10.9, I immediatly noticed it was solwer on my 13-inch MBP Mid 2012 i5 core, but i thought it was to the fact that it was the first release of the os.
But after installing 10.9.2 it is still slow, maybe slower, in all the most common operations, such as  booting up or launching apps.
Do you think Apple is working on 10.9.2 slowness? I am really thinking to downgrade to Mountain Lion.

    Thanks!

    Quadra,
I did try to enable it but nothing happens. So, I went to my System Preferences, under Other and clicked on my Version Cue2 but I got an message saying I can't access the Preerences and that I should contact software administrator or something like that. I can't remember off the top of my head what exactly it read.
Do you think it might have something to do with installing CS2 on my laptop and on iMac Intel. Maybe I can only use the serial number once. If so, I should have just installed it on my iMac, since my Powerbook G4 will be replaced in a year hopefully with the new Mac Book Pro.
On my Powerbook, I can turn off and on Version Cue2 using the icon at the top of my screen, but on the iMac I can't do so. There's an option to turn it on, but nothing happens. Well, so far at least all the other software seems to work okay...InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and Photoshop.
    My questions:
-Maybe I can only install CS2 once with the serial #
-Maybe there'a problem between CS2 and iMac Intel.
Well, it's not a major deal not to have the function of Version Cue2 but it should be great to have a full functioning CS2 running on my iMac.

  • Playback progessively getitng slower and slower

When I first played with Premiere, it could read the footage from my canon T2i like a charm, no herky-jerky playback, no waiting for the "play" button to refresh everytime I shuttled (both in the source monitor and program). After using for only a couple months, the playback became impossible, to a point where today I deleted the program and reuploaded it. Now, it's back to working seamlessly! I don't want this to happen again, and I searched the forums to no avail, so I am asking ya'll. Before the delete, I trashed my prefs, tried everything I could google, nothing worked. I have a i5 but it's not my system, because the progrma works fine form the get go... but steadily gets slower and slower. I hope htis doesn't become another bloating forum, because I deleted everything and it was still slow. Help!!!

    DSH,
I assume since you said that you "trashed prefs" you are on a mac.  There is another thing in my experience that will bring performance down to a crawl and that is media cache files and media cache database files.  If you never go in and empty those it will (or at least on all the ppro stations I have worked on in the past) over time bring ppro to a crawl.  Go into ppro's preferences go to media and there you will see media cache files, and media cache database.  you will see the file path for each.  Go through the finder to that folder and empty it.  Ppro will have to make new ones for the active projects that you are working on, but it will get rid of all of the ones that are still there bogging down your system from old projects.
Also, if you have an external HDD, you can put project files on your system drive, and then media and scratches on your external.  Not the best setup to have only 2 drives, but it might work for small lower res proj.  You said it ran seamlessly before, so obviously it has worked for your particular workflow in the past.
Try that.....lemme know what ya come up with.

  • Slow capture, slow preview

I have the following set up
Final cut pro 7 running on mac pro 12 cores 2,66 Mhz with 32 GBs Ram
    Decklink
Promise Vtrak RAID with fiber connection
When i capture on local disk, everything works fine which btw i use ProRes 422 HQ and local disk is a 7200 rpm SATA
When i switch to RAID which has 150 MBps read 330 MBps write capability according to Blackmagic disk speed test software, capturing, previewing and redrawing audio vawes are very slow and impossible to work with.
I happen to know its highly recommended to use external disk drives but in this situation which makes really no sense its impossible to use.
I know this is not a final cut problem, but im almost sure that this is not a decklink or RAID problem.
    Any thoughts ?

Have you checked to make sure you have the latest drivers for both the decklink and Raid?  I'd check with support at both companies.  You might want to try removing the decklink card and see if the raid is still having the same problem.

  • Aperture getting slower and slower

When I first got my Mac, and installed Aperture it was lightening fast. The sliders worked in real time, I never got the spinning wheel, every reason I wanted a Mac in the first place had come true. Fast forward to today - about 6 months into owning the Mac and using Aperture, the software is running slower and slower. Even clicking on an adjustment often takes time for the adjustment to load. Brush HUD's don't show up right away; adjustments don't show in real time - all of this makes tasks with brushes painful if not sometimes impossible. I've read the posts and threads related to slowness - faces is off; I'm not sharing photo's with I-life or I-work; all other apps and software are closed and shut down; my HDD is under 60% utilized; my library resides on my computer. Why is the system getting slower, and what can I do? Obviously, I can add RAM, but my question would be why would it have worked so fast previously and work so slow now with the same RAM? Any suggestions for adjustments, or suggestions. Anybody else experience progressively slower Aperture?

How much RAM do you have?
    In any case:
    Repair your Library.
    Then:
Copy your repaired Aperture Library to an external drive.  Rename the version on your system drive.  Run Aperture from the external drive and confirm that the copy is whole and working.  Delete the re-named version on your system drive.  Empty the system trash.  Just for giggles, using Disk Utility, repair your system drive.  Then copy your Aperture Library back to your system drive.
    How does it run?
(This will repair your Library, possibly clean up your disk, and defragment your Aperture Library (many of which contain hundreds of thousands -- even millions -- of files).)
There is one other thing to do -- PRAM flush? -- I'll see it I can turn it up.

  • FIRE FOX IS GETTING SLOWER AND SLOWER LOADING PAGES I GO TO ONLINE. IT LOAD CIRCLE STOP SPINNING AND WILL START BACK BUT IT TAKES IT'S TIME TO DO SO. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON THROUGH THE LAST SEVERAL UPGRADES.

FIRE FOX USED TO BE A FAST BROWSER BUT IT IS GETTING SLOWER AND SLOWER. THE BLUE-E IS ABOUT TO THE POINT OF BEING FASTER THEM THE FOX. I HAVE ALWAYS LIKE THE FOX, JUST WANT TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM WITH IT AND THE LONGER I HAVE THE WINDOW OPEN ARE UP THE WORSE IT GETS. I DO A LOT OF GAMING ON FACEBOOK PLAYING MAFIA WARS BUT THE PROBLEM IS NOT LIMITED TO JUST THERE IT IS ALL THE TIME AND EVERY WHERE. I HAVE TRIED ADD-ON'S THINKING THEY MAY HELP BUT NOTHING HAS DONE ANY GOOD. CHROME IS TWICE IF NOT THREE
TIMES AS FAST AS THE FOX LATELY ON LOADING PAGES.

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • Is ther a way to speed up a Mac? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.  When memory comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? Is there a way to determine unused programs/software to remove and free space?

Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • HT201541 Our Mac-Mini has gotten slower and slower. Is there a utility that would help speed it up?

Our 4 plus year old Mac-Mini has gotten slower and slower.  Is there a utility that would help speed it up or is there another?

Hello! I’ve offered the steps below to similar posts in the past and they helped out getting to the solution (or at least find the cause). I suggest them to you too in this case. It will take you about 30 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is.
The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully.
    Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you either see an Apple Logo with a loading bar or a spinning gear.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk]  unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! For a screenshot of what I mean, check this article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202574
4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason.
If they worked I suggest you do these steps everytime your Mac becomes slow.

  • When I first open firefox it is fast but as I surf it gets slower and slower them stops, I have to close it and restart. what do I need to do to fix this?

I start of using Firefox 7, as I surf or stumble it gets slower and slower loading pages till it just starts to freeze up. I have to shut down firefox and restart. This only happens after 3 or 4 web pages.

As suggested I went to Control Panel & chose Add/Remove Pgms. Now, near the bottom was Windows iLivid Toolbar. I then hi-lighted it & removed it. The date it was last used seemed to be when my problem started. I am not a big user of toolbars (except the main ones); so I had no issues about deleting one that I did not recognize.
Then I opened up Mozilla again & changed my Home Page, using Tools then Options. I closed out Mozilla, then brought it up again & my new Home Page was showing just fine. Wow! What a relief it worked. I hope it lasts. Thanx Firefox !

  • Why are my Spotlight searches getting slower and slower?

My Spotlight searches were becoming slower and slower. I solved the problem by downloading OnyX , running the disc optimization application under the "automation" section and resetting the Spotlight index. When I rebooted my G4, Spotlight re-indexed my computer contents. My Spotlight searches are now very quick again.

You have probably answered your own problem in a way....
As you save more and more files to your computer Spotlight has more and more information and files to run through, when these are indexed Spotlight then has a sort of record for what you are searching for so when you indexed spotlight it then didn't have to do so much work.
