Impossibly high power usage
I can't remember exactly what I was doing when I noticed this, but my T420 reported that it was using 1,999,825 watts on 6/29. I forgot about this, and just saw the photo today. For your viewing pleasure:

Haswell high power usage [i5-4258U Macbook pro retina 11.1 13"]
Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out why Arch uses around twice the power of OS X when idle (and light usage). With the laptop idle, not going to sleep or turning the screen off, I measured the battery usage over 80 mins,
Arch 20% (50%->30%)
OS X 10% (50%->40%)
I have checked other smaller intervals such as 100% to 95% or 80% to 78% at various times and it always works out to be around 4 mins to drain 1% on Linux and 8 mins to drain 1% on OS X.
It is also pretty obvious during moderate usage, if I use Arch on the train on my way to and from work it drains around double the battery compared to OS X. I have checked that the battery percentage is being reported correctly and it is almost the same between the two operating systems. 30% in Arch via the acpi command corresponds to 31% under OS X and 48% to 50%.
I have tried using i7z, i7z-git and powertop to measure the power states and clocks of the cpu. i7z reports that it is sitting at 800 MHz idle and only shows the C1 state.

Does anyone have any ideas why it is using so much more juice under Linux?ok a bit of an update I've gone thru all of the steps in the wiki on power saving,
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Power_saving
it has made no real difference, now it takes just under 5 mins to drain 1%, still much worse than the 8 mins in OS X. -
High disk usage/high memory usage.
i keep getting high memory usage and high disk usage in ps cs6.
its slow when i open a file. how can i solve this problem.
thank you.
philip. Not to put too fine a point on it, but more than what? More RAM is almost always better, but you haven't answered most of the questions posed here. The answer might be different if you have 2 GB of RAM or 32 GB of RAM already. A 9 megapixel document could get rather large with a lot of layers, but again you've neglected to give any hard info about its size.
Regarding your video card, that's a bit of a judgment call you need to make. For Photoshop CS6 I currently advise people to try to get a video card that gets a score of 1000 or better on this benchmark: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Video card speed will matter when you're editing those 3D components and video card VRAM will also matter, but possibly even more importantly your GeForce 320 is a bit old, and nVidia may just not be doing their best driver work for it any more.
Everything in general will run more smoothly with a powerful modern video card. I like to recommend a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 7750 - or if the computer power supply and your budget allow, the even more powerful 7850. VisionTek does a very good job with their hardware, IMO, and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.
Keep in mind that if you switch from nVidia to ATI or vice versa, you should carefully sweep your system to ensure all files from the old card are removed, then visit the web site of the new card's maker and download/install their latest display driver release.
Best of luck.

SBS 2011 - High CPU usage - Help me Microsoft forums! You're my only hope!
My company supports a client that has a SBS 2011 server. For about the past year, we've been fighting a recurring issue with performance on this server. There are about ten local users and four remote users. The server's CPU idles at
about 60%-80% but is usally running when under *any* load from 80%-100%. If you do anything on the console, it will stay pretty much at 100%. These are not power users by any means. The server is utilized for file/printer sharing, Exchange
2010, and one flat file database application (non-SQL). SharePoint is not utilized.
Needless to say, our client is frustrated. When opening files, using their database application, or doing anything Exchange-related, there is a large amount of lag on the client side. First, here are the server's specs:
Make:Dell PowerEdge T420
OS: SBS 2011 Standard SP1
CPU: 2 - Intel Xeon E5-2407
Memory: 32GB
RAID: RAID 1 - Operating System (C:)/Data Volume (E:) | RAID 5 - Data Volume (D:)
Here is what we have tried to resolve this to finality:
* Doubled resources - Initially the server had a single physical processor and 16GB of memory. While these specs alone should have been fine, and were fine when the server was installed, we had periods of time where the server would just sit all day at
100% usage. We doubled the resources and while this seemed like it would fix the issue, we are still seeing abnormally high processor usage.
* Removed all monitoring tools, antivirus, and backup software - As part of our testing, we removed our monitoring agent (LabTech) and antivirus (GFI Vipre). Mozy is utilized for an off-site backup so that was disabled. No dice.
* Verified updates - We made absolutely sure the server was 100% patched.
* Malware/Virus/Rootkit checks - We have ran scans checking for any potential issues with security.
* Ran MBSA and MBCA to fix any issues with the server's configuration.
There is no single process which is using all of the CPU, or we would simply be able to narrow it down. Our calls to Microsoft support have yielded no answers. The last call ended with Microsoft stating that a SBS server should always be running
at high CPU usage. Meanwhile, we have many other clients with less-beefy servers, with more users, who have no issues like these.
So, I'm turning to you all. I will gladly provide logs, configuration settings, even remote assistance sessions if you all can help shed some light on what might be causing my issues.
Thank you!Some comments/ideas:
How long was the server running after this screenshot? I ask because store.exe is only got a 1GB of RAM which is really low - it should grab most of the RAM within a few hours.
The server was up for about 12 hours. I believe an adjustment was made before to limit the Exchange memory usage.
Strange that SearchIndexer (wsearch service) is so high although that may be a startup condition.
The LT* processes seem to be a 3rd party monitoring tool - no idea why it would ever need that much CPU though (I thought you disabled this?).
We had, but we cannot go forever without monitoring our client's server. It has been pulled off in the past and results on performance are pretty much the same.
The taskmgr process run by amnet_admin has used a lot of total CPU Time. What is it? (can't see the command line).
That's the user I was logged in as when I took the screenshot. Even the task manager seems to eat up the CPU.
The sqlserver process right above it is also busy - may want to look at the command line and figure out which SQL database that is (SBS has 3 - WSUS, Sharepoint, and SBS monitoring)
I believe that's the SharePoint database. They don't currently use their site. Would you recommend a removal and reinstallation? I would not completely remove as I know SBS doesn't like you removing parts of the complete package.
Strange that vds.exe is 10% - that is the interface to the disk management interface IIRC. Perhaps your monitoring service has gone awry here - definitely lose it.
I'll see about pulling it off and I'll see if there are any improvements.

Hey Guys, I been having problems with my mac. I'm running 10.8.5 on my 2008 Power mac tower and recently I have been having problems with my mac
going real slow. I opened Activity Monitor and Noticed something called "Installer" and it was using 90% of my memory and the only thing I can do is quit the process. Does anyone know why this is happening?I ran EtreCheck and i'll post my results. I will add more ram after I fix the problem, and adding an SSD is a good option. I thought about it but
I was holding off because I was thinking of buying a new computer. I will try to keep my sysstem drive clean in the future. After Linc Davis posted about the Trojan i'm planning of doing that. I have a cloned mac drive, I updated the other day using SuperDuper.
My EtreCheck info

Kernel_task high CPU usage yosemite
Hi,
I have a problem with my old macbook pro 15" Early 2011
The battery was dead so I bought a new one and replaced it. I also installed a new Samsung SSD.
Then after the startup (OSX Mavericks was installed) I had a high CPU usage on the kernel_task process.
After some research i managed to get rid of the problem with manipulating the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext files.
After that everything worked fine.
Now I decided to upgrade to Yosemite (clean install from usb) and now i have the same problem again, but i can't find the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext.
After I power up the macbook everything works fine, but after some minutes the kernel_task has again a very high CPU usage - the mouse is hardly moving.
How can I solve this problem and where do I find the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext? Is there another solution for this problem?
I already reset the SMC and the NVRAM.
thank you

Monitoring Switch Power Usage with SNMP
Hello everyone,
I have searched high and low, and yet I am still confused as to how to do this... Is there a uniform MIB that can be interrogated, regardless of the switching platform? Or are there specific MIB's for each switch family..?Monitoring overall power usage may depend on platform and software. There are MIBs such as the CISCO-ENERGYWISE-MIB (if you are using EnergyWise), CISCO-ENVMON-MIB (for voltage information), and CISCO-ENTITY-FRU-CONTROL-MIB (for volatage sensor information).

High CPU Usage / Dropped Packets - Switch Blade WS-CBS3120X-S
Hi all,
I have a couple of Switches Blade 3120, working as active-standby model (HSRP) on a new site deployment. There are other 20 sites more or less, working on the same model, without issues. But in this one, we are seeing a high cpu usage. The traffic going through the platform is 600Mbps (on peaks), and in this case we have 40% of CPU usage. Traffic should be close to 3 Gbps. When we tried to send the whole traffic through the platform, active switch began to drop packets on the majority of interfaces.
When we analyze the CPU usage, there is a special process called "HL3U bkgrd proce" always have the most CPU use, but we do not know what concerns. We do not know if it is caused because there are PBRs configured. It should not matter. How I mentioned, there are other sites working fine and have had always the same PBR number.
Could you guys help us?. Any idea what is causing the high usage?. Is there a special debug we could to perform to diagnose the issue?. Also, we have seen a high interrupt CPU usage (9% in this case).
Find attached the whole diagnosis outputs.
Thanks for your assistance guys.
Cheers,
Juan Pablo

We recently configured a stack of four 48 port 3750-x switches . We are noticing high CPU usage. "Hulc LED process" seems pretty high.
This has coincided with VMware servers getting slow and non-responsive at times, perhaps a coincidence, not sure.
Below I provided some outputs that might help to diagnose it
Thanks
John

Jeff
I was aware of the many ACLs however we used to have the same ACLs in a previous 3750G stack about 2 weeks ago and we never had this issue. I agree I need to optimize them and do somehing because it is reaching its max before the CPU starts processing them but I am not certain this is what is causing the issue.
Nikolay,
I am trying to understand "interrupts" with the analysis of the outputs I posted. Here is another output deom the link you provided. Please post your thoughts if you can.
This switch also serves as a gateway(L3 role) for many systems. Would it make sense to offload that responsability from this switch and let an actual router do it?
Thanks
Johnny

High CPU Usage from "System Interrupts" when enabling IGP
Hi
Mainboard is Z87-G43 with bios version 1.5 - OS is Win 8.1 x64
I have screen#1 connected to a geforce 570 graphics card.
Then i enabled the IGP (4770k) in Bios, installed the newest VGA Drivers Version 10.18.10.3277 from MSI homepage and connected screen#2 to IGP (reason is that geforce clocks go to 3D Mode when 2 monitors are connected -> higher power consumption)
Now I have ~10% permanent CPU Usage (80% of CPU1) in Task Manager process "System Interrupts"
Any Ideas?
Thanks for helpProblem is gone after reinstalling Windows 8.1 again. (Both times clean install)
Things that have been changed before reinstalling:
- I updated Bios again with Version 1.5 - this time with BIOS + ME update with M-Flash. I couldnt do this before because with Bios 1.3 it instantly freezed when selecting the bios file for 1.5 update. So i used the forums Flash Tool to get to 1.5 and the updated M-Flash. ME-Version is higher now.
Things that have been changed after reinstalling:
- I did all windows updates before installing drivers
- Nvidia drivers is now 331.65 from Windows Update instead of 331.58 from Nvidias HP
- Intel VGA drivers is now 10.18.10.3316 from Windows Update instead of 10.18.10.3277 from MSI HP
- Intel ME drivers is now 9.5.15.1730 (2013-10-29) from MSI Homepage (was updated after my download)
Everything else was identical (UEFI Settins, programs...)
Greetings -
Mac Pro power usage (W)
I'm looking for an UPSi for my Mac Pro. Does anyone know how much power (watts) does Mac Pro uses when it's working full CPU load? I have 8-core 3GHz with X1900 XT graphics card.
You could use APC SMART-UPS 1000VA or the RS1500VA. There are lots of threads on UPS needs and demands.
The more RAM and drives, and PCIe cards, the higher.
Power Usage of Mac Pro It requires 410 watts to start up, idles at 300 watts, and peaks at 430 watts when running Doom 3, the most demanding power wise of the ten apps we tried.
The Mac Pro had 16GB of RAM, four internal hard drives, and a Radeon X1900 XT. We're confident the Mac Pro's 980 watt power supply can handle just about everything you can do to upgrade or expand a Mac Pro.
Mac Pro: Power consumption and thermal output (BTU) information
Update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304378
Mac Pro (Late 2006) Quad Core 2.66 Ghz Mac Pro
Idle and max consumption:
171 W 445 W
854 BTU/hr 1,519 BTU/hr
Notes
*Power consumption data (Watts) is measured from the wall power source and includes all power supply and system losses.
Additional correction is not needed.
*"CPU Max" is defined as running a compute-intensive test application that maximizes processor usage and therefore power consumption.
*These numbers reflect a 23° C (73.4° F) ambient running environment. Increased ambient temperatures will require faster fan speeds which will increase power consumption.
At 35° C (95° F), 50 W should be added to reflect increased power consumption.
*1000W PSU do not deliver more than 500-600W effectively -
/sbin/init high CPU usage (80%)
My PC run slowly, I viewed the processes by htop utility and it revealed that /sbin/init has a constantly high CPU usage, around 70-80%. I scanned it with clamscan virus scanner, but not infected. What can I do to fix this problem?
Did you mean "ps -ef" ? Then:

MSI KT6 Delta LSR SATA to PATA High CPU Usage Problem
Well recently I've switch to my one of my other motherboards on my network to a MSI KT6 Delta LSR, it was working fine after a reformat, but I notice a few problems and that is 100% cpu usage for SATA to PATA, and vice versa, which seems really crazy. Then my network card performance is ISDN speed sluggish, and I tested my line to be working 100% with another mobo. But when I put another NIC on the same mobo it suffers the same speed problems.
Any suggestions? The rig is specs:
Barton 2500+
Antec QuietPower 350W
200GB Seagate SATA HDD
40GB Seagate PATA HDD
ATI Radeon 7500 AIW
Audigy 2 Value
Realtek 8139 NIC
MSI KT6 Delta LSR Mobo
2x512 MB PC 2700 RAM
Pioneer 107D DVD Writer
LG 16X DVD-ROM
56K Modem (A-open)Shouldn't say what I don't know about SATA, but since I found below, I need ask if VIA 4in1 drivers are installed, preferably while in SafeMode I say:
http://www.google.se/search?q=cache:X6ewgPiIHYcJ:www.qdi.nl/cgi-bin/bbs/YaBB.pl%3Fboard%3DP4I865%3Baction%3Ddisplay%3Bnum%3D1074174096+sata+to+pata+cpu+usage&hl=sv
I recently installed 160g Seagate barracuda 7200.7 drive on SATA port. (I enabled the Bios using Auto) I have a P4I865pea-6al mother board, with two PATA drives . When copying files between the PATA drives on ide ports, to or from, the SATA drive, I notice the CPU usage goes up to 100%, but when copying files from one ide drive (the PATA drives) to another the CPU usage is very low.
Is there a bios setting that will allow me to copy files from the SATA drive to the Pata drives using a small amount of CPU power, found when just copying between the Primary and Secondary IDE drives? I am using Adobe premiere pro, which uses a lot of CPU power, and the high CPU usage of the SATA drive crashes this program? Any help would be appreciated

MSI GE70 2OE, high ram usage problem
Hey,
when i start my notebook everything goes fast and runs normal. but after a few Min's working with notebook my RAM usage goes up to 95-97%, and everything goes slow.
not running any special programs that can use so much RAM. and can't find anything in Task Manager what it could be.
Normal RAM usage:
High RAM usage:
can anyone help me with this? thxI'm currently trying to help my friend with this issue... But worse.
He had the same issue happen to him. Brand new GE70, got it like a week ago. RAM maxed out, but task manager didn't show anything near that much being used by individual processes. Shortly after he said this he also said the disk usage had gone up to 99% or something similar.
The laptop became completely unresponsive and he had to do a hard reset - but it won't boot up anymore. Just flashes the MSI logo for a moment. Once it got to a screen that said "preparing automatic repair" for a second or two before shutting off again.
Tried EC resets, no dice. Got him to burn a copy of hiren's boot cd to try and run a disk check, it didn't even get to checking the drive. Now the power button doesn't even light up.
He's spoken to MSI support, they said to send it in... But he's got some data on there he needs and can't exactly get on to recover it. It's a real pickle.
So... uh... make sure you have backups. -
High CPU usage since last 48 hours
hi,
i'm experiencing a high cpu usage relating to "System" since last 48 hours. i'm also unable to open the Pictures or Music. It says "Scanning Device Storage" but seems never will end.
i've my phone restarted many times but changed nothing. i'm currently recharging my phone 2 times a day and i'm worried about the heat it's getting.
i'm also worried about the large size of data being out of my phone! is it a security issue?
(down bounds of the battery usage showing the phone on charge!)Remove your media card and do a powered on, battery pull reboot. Reinsert your media card and see if the issue persists.
For the #Z30 model,
On your BlackBerry10 device with a non-removable battery:
Restart: With your BlackBerry powered ON, press and hold the upper edge power button a couple seconds and the tap the lower right RESTART.
or,
Reboot: With your BlackBerry powered ON, using the side edge volume keys, press and hold down both of the Up and Down volume keys for about 20 seconds, ignoring the initial screenshot message... the screen will go black and reboot.
