Improper shutdown detected - LDAP backup

Periodically, when I try and connect to a share on the server, the only share I can see is my own user folder and nothing else, when I fact I have a drive and several folder setup to be accessed. But it seems since the 10.6.3 update that something is killing part of Open Directory and the only fix is to reboot the server. Here is what the Directory Services Error Log shows when I notice that I can't do what I could do an hour ago.
2010-04-14 13:26:32 PDT - T[0x00007FFF7033DBE0] - Improper shutdown detected
When I go to the Configuration Log for the same time frame, it appears that a backup script is running but perhaps doesn't shut down the service properly (hence the error) or can't restart it, or something. I have a crash report in the Console for these events. Here is what that log shows for that event (not the crash report, too long and ugly).

It looks like slapconfig -backupdb runs hourly but something goes wrong occasionally. Anyone seen this before?

Glad to see I'm not the only one!
I am doing hourly TimeMachine backups. It doesn't happen with every backup, but it does seem to happen when the backup gets "stuck" for one reason or anther. It's as though the scripts lock something down, and then I can't get to the shares via AFP. I can over FTP though while they are "invisible" to AFP.
But the next time the script runs again it seems to clear itself up. So, perhaps shutting TM off, then restarting the service would free the thing up. I have no instant fix at the moment. Just throwing more info out there.

  • Mail unexpectedly quits following electrical outage/improper shutdown

Following a brief electrical outage in which my iMac improperly shutdown, Mail has repeatedly crashed. The crash seems to happen immediately following MobileMe synchronization.
After the initial crash, I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions and re-started the computer. The crashes -- described by error message as "Mail unexpectedly Quit"--continue to occur.
I appreciate any suggestions to solve this problem.

Did you use Disk Utility to repair the drive or just permissions? The latter is of no use but the former may be especially after an abnormal shutdown.
You may find other problems as well when something like this happens. Abnormal shutdowns can cause disk corruption. At the extreme if can cause a hard drive to fail. To start see the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now it's not likely the above will solve the problem. The most likely solution is to reinstall OS X since you don't know what else may have been corrupted by the abnormal shutdown. If you have a backup clone then erase your main drive and restore the clone. If you have a TM backup from before the outage, then erase the drive, reinstall OS X, then restore your files from the TM backup.
If you don't have a backup then at least backup your personal data before reinstalling.
If only Mail is affected and all else appears normal, then you can try replacing Mail with a fresh copy from the OS X Installer Disc One. Use the Optional Installs installer which will let you reinstall certain applications like Mail without having to reinstall OS X. You might also try removing the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file and the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail/ folder (drag to Trash or Desktop) to see if that fixes the problem before replacing the Mail application itself. If it's simply a corrupted preference or cache file, then you won't need to worry about doing something more extreme.

  • Macbook Pro 15" late 2008 random improper shutdowns on battery

Hi, my macbook pro 15" late 2008 model shuts down by itself when on battery. The problem started one day out of nowhere about 2 months ago. There seems to be no recurring pattern in the shutdowns as I can sometimes use the computer for one or two hours, sometimes only 5 minutes before it shuts down. The computer works perfectly when the charger is plugged in, and also when the battery is pulled out and only the charger is plugged in.
Here is what I've done so far:
    Reset of the SMC
    Reset of PRAM
Repair of hard disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility
Reinstallation of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from disc and then install of all software updates
Reinstallation of all updates with the downloadable Combo Update
None of this fixed the problem.
I am a student in Glasgow, but normally live in Luxemburg. When I went back to Lux for the holidays I sent the mac for repair at Lineheart Luxemburg. The first time it was returned to me after a week. They hadn't detected the problem because they had only ran the tests with the charger pluggged in. I was quite annoyed as you might understand. All they told me was to buy an 85W charger for the mac as I only had a 60W one. This is my uncles old computer and I don't know why he had the wrong charger. I got the computer a year ago and it had worked flawlessly until now. The 85W charger didn't fix my problem.
I sent the mac back to Lineheart and they ran a second test for free. They found the problem and all they did was to repair the hard drive with Disk Utility and reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3. WHICH I HAD ALREADY DONE MYSELF. This time I was really annoyed. The problem basically occured again straight after I went to get the computer.
Now I am back in Glasgow and I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. I hope they can be of a bit more help although the people at Lineheart are "Apple Mac Certified Technicians" too. I've already spent 140€ for nothing.
All I really want is to test the computer with another battery since the problem seems to really come from there. However none of the technicians did this and I don't have any friends with a similar model of Macbook.
The cycle count is at 263 and the status is "normal" for the battery.
There is a weird problem though, when I plugg in the charger the icon on the top right will first say "not charging" if I unplug the cable at this moment the computer dies. If I leave it in for about a minute it will start calculating the time until full charge. This takes MUCH LONGER than it used to and when it's done I get something silly like 20 hours or 6:30 hours until full charge. After 5-10 minutes it starts calculating again. After a long time I get something more sensible like 1:30 or 2 hours until full charge. Notice that during this entire time, the percentage of the charge will not have change by a single percent. It can sometimes take up to an hour until the battery actually starts charging.
I've read on different forums that this can be related to the logic board and then my Macbook will just have to become a stationary computer since I can't pay 1200€ to get the logic board replaced. I really hope I just need battery replacement.
Also, after I turn on the mac again after an improper shutdown my antivirus (avast!) will give me a message "An internal error has occured. You can find more information in the system logs. After filtering for shutdown this is what I found. (sorry for the screenshot, I couldn't find how to copy the log)
Sorry for this very long description but I wanted you to have all the information. I'm really getting desperate so any help is appreciated even if it's only on how to locate the problem I would be so gratefull. Thank you all.
    Daniel Lecoq

Yes, I boot up from the OS 10.6.3 installation disc and use Disc Utility to repair Disk and Permissions. I must tell you though, I've done the disc repair and permission repair quite a few times and it has never helped. Right now I've forgotten the OS disc in Luxemburg so I can only get it when I'm back in 3 weeks.
I ran Disc Utility today though and repaired permissions. The only one that wasn't fixed was an SUID-file.
I also checked the disc and it has some problems but I can't fix them until I get my OS disc or if I ask them to do it at the Genius Bar.
Yes, I have a Time Machine backup on an external usb HDD, last time I backed up was yesterday.

  • Printer screen states Improper Shutdown because power was cut off without using printer power button

This has not happened.  Subsequent power off and power on using power button will provide one-time solution but  message re-appears on what seems to be a time cycle requiring repeat of on -off button action.

Some file or files that are essential for booting got corrupted during the improper shutdown. You could spend hours upon hours testing individually all the thousands of various files and replacing them with known good copies.
Holding down ⌘V at boot time will boot you in verbose mode, and from there there might be a clue which file(s) are corrupted.
But at this point it might be easier to just do an Archive & Install of OS X. Easier yet would be to reformat your drive and then restore your system from the last full backup made before the improper shutdown.

  • Officejet 6600 boots and gives an improper shutdown error

My officejet 6600 lost power due to a plug being pulled, since then it boots and during post it says there was an improper shutdown, then tries to feed paper and shows an error of b8658a1e.  it then flashes all leds and shows an improper shutdown was preformed and to power down.  This is a never ending cycle.  I tried pulling the paper and the ink, tried pulling power, same error.

    Hi @aaronkessler,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see your HP Officejet 6600 lost power due to the power supply being pulled and now you always get an improper shut down error message and code.
I would like you to perform a Hard Reset:
    1. Unplug all cables and memory cards from the printer. Unplug the power cord, directly from the back of the printer while the printer is still turned on.
    2. Unplug the other end of the cord from the power source.
    3. If there is a power module on the power cord, disconnect one end and reconnect it.
    4. After 60 seconds, plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or battery backup as they can cause the printer to lose basic functionality over time).
    5. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
    6. The printer should automatically power back up. If it doesn't, turn it on with the power button.
    7. Try making a photocopy (if your printer is an all-in-on printer) before connecting any other cables to the printer.
    8. Connect any other needed cables to the printer.
If you are still getting the same error message after the Hard Reset, please check your inbox, I have sent you a Private message on the Forums, go to your Userpage to the right of your Username you will see your inbox.

  • Improper shutdown renders OS X unbootable?

I was using OS X just fine this morning (I've been going back and forth between Ubuntu and OS X for several months now without problems). I then restarted my Macbook Pro, but changed my mind about having it running, so I held the power button down until it shut off (but before it had reached the login screen). I normally don't do this but I was being impatient.
Now, though, when I try to boot into OS X, it gets hung up on the Apple logo and the revolving circle. I've tried the following:
-using the install disk to get to utilities to repair the drive; it has been repaired and reports that it's in good condition
Another problem now is that rEFIt doesn't show up; unless I hold alt/option at startup, it will go straight into attempting to boot into OS X (which fails, of course). Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Boot fails after improper shutdown

A few months ago, my Powerbook G4 Titanium began failing to boot into 10.4 after any improper shutdown---power failure, force restart, etc.
It would begin booting, the little circle would start to spin, and then the thing would just shut off. No error, no message.
The only solution was to pull out my Norton Systemworks CD, use it to boot into OS9, and then restart into 10.4.
Any help in figuring out what's up would be greatly appriciated.

Norton Systemworks was actually probably the cause at one point. It is not compatible with Mac OS X in its Disk Doctor or Speed Disk module.
You should only use these utilites:
    1. A backup utility before any other as my backup FAQ says:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    2. And if your data is backed up and won't boot after an improper shut down, try repairing your directory with utilities known to work as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
The only elements of Systemworks that are even remotely safe for use with Mac OS X are Retrospect for backup, and Anti-virus for locating Windows viruses on your Mac that you may transfer to Windows users. Everything else, you should throw away from the Systemworks bundle.

  • Windows 8.1 Random Slow Startups, "Improper Shutdowns"

Is this the right subforum? I almost chose frezes/hangs but that's not exactly what it is so...
Please note that this is a copy/paste from another forum where I sought help. Today is another day from the one referenced in the indented text below. In fact, my system had a clean and safe boot with no speed issues or stalling tonight. The issue is not consistent. Though I was seeking help at another forum, I grew uncomfortable with the steps asked of me (deleting caches and temp files that I'd rather keep and using a third-party defragger; getting standoffish when I requested explanation for why I was being asked to run three or more "cleaner" programs and if defragging was honestly necessary on a mostly-new machine that just got a clean bill of health from HP) and was brushed aside with something of an attitude. Here's the original info on the issue:
Alright, so, yesterday I noticed that it seemed to take a little longer than usual to start up my laptop (HP Pavilion 17-7042nr with Windows 8.1 64-bit; I've only had it a short amount of time and it was purchased refurbished). I didn't think too much of it, however, since I was starting it at the same time as my seven-year-old Vista machine so by comparison it was still way faster (20+ seconds vs. the old one's 2 minutes). After that, didn't think anything of it...
Today, however, I started it up on its own and it took far too long compared to how it used to behave. I've noticed this a few times in the past, but always figured Windows was adjusting itself after I'd installed stuff etc. But since there was no need for it to do that this time, I got suspicious and started looking in the event viewer. To my shock, it claimed that the last shutdown was improper and that's why it took forever; it was actually rebooting.
Trouble is, as far as I knew, no it most certainly did not shut down improperly. I turned it off using the power button, which is set from the power plan to perform a shut down. It did the normal thing: processed the shut down, turned off the screen, and shortly after turned off all system lights except of course the one to indicate that it was plugged in. All seemed well, and was not slower than usual or anything of that sort. So I have no clue why or how it's shutting down improperly.
But not only that, I tracked it back and several times, as far back as the 19th of February (as well as a couple of times while it was in HP's custody for unrelated maintenance; they apparently did not notice it, either, as it was given a clean bill of health before return) this has been occurring. I've transferred a ton of files, settings, programs, etc. since then so I really didn't want to do a Restore. I did, however, consider it... only to discover that my previous Restore Points before the system was returned by HP have been destroyed. So no chance of going back before the 19th, even if I wanted to (I don't, frankly).
I have no clue what's going on, but here's the events from the first ever time it happened:
the logoff/power down is listed as:
    Information    2/19/2015 5:09:11 AM    Kernel-Power    109    (103)

Those were from the 19 of February, the first time it seems to have happened. The most recent (today) incident is very similar, but not entirely identical.
    The shutdown was:

-- "The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition."
Upon boot the seemingly relevant bits are:

--"THe last shutdown's success status was true. The last boot's success status was true."

--"The operating system started at system time 2015-03-17T21:47:45.491075600Z." (( What even is up with that time??? ))
    Critical    3/17/2015 4:48:01 PM    Kernel-Power    41    (63)
--"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
    Error    3/17/2015 4:48:24 PM    EventLog    6008    None
--"THe previous system shutdown at 5:12:03 AM on 3/17/2015 was unexpected."
I tried googling, to no avail, other than a suggestion that it might be caused by some sort of system file issue. So I ran "sfc /scannow" in an admin-level command prompt and when it was finished it said: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."
I tracked down the log file and it's rather huge but toward the end I found that "Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB" was corrupted. Naturally, I investigated... But according to the thread I found it's some kind of printer-related thing, and I've never even connected a printer to this system, much less a Canon brand one as the info I found suggested. In fact, the thread I linked claims that it shouldn't cause any huge issues, so... Probably not the cause of my shutdown issues, which are more pressing. Thus, I can't find anything to indicate what's causing this problem.
The only thing I can think of that I had done around the 19th was I was trying to get rid of Beats Audio crap on my laptop. (Don't even get me started on that hot mess!) So I'd been swapping between the Windows default audio drivers and versions of the Realtek High Definition Audio from both HP and Realtek. But I never had a corrupt install and I don't recall installing one over the other without uninstalling first, so I don't know if that's an issue. Somehow, I doubt it, especially since this issue isn't consistent. Then again, I don't consistently use the audio on my computer so who knows. (UPDATE: Used audio extensively, but it managed a clean shutdown after.)
After all lights are off and the system is shut down, unless I've been using it on battery and it needs a charge, I unplug it to conserve energy. I only ever do this if the battery has a full charge, so I don't think that should be an issue even though hybrid shutdown/fast boot is some kind of hibernation-shutdown combination. I'd prefer to keep fast start/hybrid boot enabled because, well, it's convenient... and I'm extremely hesitant to tamper with the UEFI settings etc. But, of course, if that's the only fix then I'd prefer it to possible hard drive damage caused by the supposed/apparent improper shut down.
Also of note: nothing is overclocked or running outside specifications, as far as I know. My system stats are:
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    AMD A10-5745M APU
    AMD Radeon HD 8610G
    UEFI BIOS Mode
    Secure Boot Enabled
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Now, for extra details. Things that were done during the process included looking for unnecessary startup items (not the real issue to be honest; when it doesn't forcibly reboot due to "improper shutdown" the startup is extremely speedy) and looking at some logs. In particular, here's the speccy log created for my system: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/vIEkYCelmSRyJjuJyye2jgD
I also had to run several "cleaner" tools, which included installing CCleaner, though I chose some files I wished to keep / thought may be important to not just delete willy-nilly. I don't like to randomly delete things that could come back and bite me in the rear, after all. And I'm honestly confused how any of that would related to Windows having inconsistent and seemingly random "improper shutdown" issues which cause it to reboot instead of using fast boot. (I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that I don't logically see how it'd make a difference and when I attempted to ask I was brushed aside.)
Like I said, by all appearances it seems to shut down properly. It has also never crashed on me. Nor has it ever blue screened or randomly rebooted.  This is very much a silent, behind-the-scenes issue.

    Hi @Alley_Kitten ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 17 f042nr Notebook and issues with performance issues or improper shutdowns.
I checked the specs of your system and with what you have posted here you have the incorrect Amd driver installed.  Your's as per your product page is a AMD Radeon HD 8610G . I would go to the device manager and remove all graphic driver, check the box for the driver as well.
Here is a document on recovery options that are available. I do use the refresh your pc method with Windows 8. Please read all the documentation before starting the operation.
    Hope this helps you out.
    Thanks.

  • Hp INkjet 3545 paper jam and improper shutdown messages

I bought and new packed piece of Inkjet 3545 all in one printer about 2 days back. After installation of the cartridges, black and tri color, and closing the top lib, the printer has been persistent with a paper jam message. The display tells me that there is a jam, but i have checked very tohoroughly everywhere. not a piece of a paper. The printer was box packed when i received and it has been in this adamant loop ever since.
Also along with this paper jam issue, the printer always tells me that last shutdown  was "an improper shutdown". I have tried with the shutdown button and with a reset to factory settings also. Nothign seems to work. Can someone help me with this. I checked the  discussion board ad many folks have similar issues. But none of the suggestions seem to work for me.

    Hello @nazgul,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Deskjet 3545 prompting with a paper jam message. I will do my best to assist you! Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference.
Follow this entire HP document on A 'Paper Jam' Message Displays on the Control Panel. Please double check to make sure there is no paper within this printer.
If your printer is stating "Improperly shutdown", this is fine. It just means you unplugged the printer in a different way. Please try this reset on your printer. Leave the printer turned on>Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer for more than 60 seconds. Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!

  • Kernel Power - Event ID 41 - Task Category 63 (spontaneous improper shutdowns and reboots)

I have been having consistent power offs/reboots lately, and im at my wits end about how to fix them.
It always seems to happen when im playing a high end game (Guild Wars 2, Mirrors Edge, etc.).
I havent experienced it while just browsing or doing basic work, or while playing lower intensity games that hog less resources.
The computer screen goes black, it reboots and i get the "windows has had an improper shutdown" kind of message.
Usually after playing the game for an hour at the least, though its happened 2-3 hours into the game as well.
I checked temps, and they are all normal,
Ive also attempted updating drivers, and downgrading from any beta drivers i was using, and none of that seemed to affect it.
    I checked event viewer,

If anyone has any suggestions as to what could be going wrong, or things to check it would be greatly appreciated.
Ive looked around at others solutions and tried whats helped others and it hasnt done much so far.
it seems like this is a very broad problem, with no unspecific fix in most cases.

    Hi,
This scenario usually indicates a problem with the hardware. Or, the driver can cause this problem. To help isolate the problem, check the following items:
    1. Overclocking: Disable overclocking to see whether the issue occurs when the system is run at the correct speed.
    2. Check the memory: Verify the memory by using a memory checker. Verify that each memory chip is
the same speed and that it is configured correctly in the system.
    3. Power supply: Make sure that the power supply has enough wattage to appropriately handle the
installed devices. If you added memory, installed a newer processor, installed additional drives, or added external devices, such devices can require more energy than the current power supply can provide consistently.
    4. Overheating: Check whether the system is overheating by examining the internal temperature of
    the hardware.
    5. Defaults: Use system defaults, and run the system.
If you see that the computer generates a Stop error that contains a BugcheckCode value that is not reported in an event ID 41, change the restart behavior for the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. Click Advanced system settings.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.
    5. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box.

  • I have a Photosmart C6180. "Improper Shutdown" comes up and then the printer shuts itself off

An "Improper Shutdown" message started appearing.  Right after this happens the printer shuts itself off, and then starts up again.  The message reappears, and the same cycle happens again.  This continues without stopping.  Pushing any button except the on/off switch makes the same thing happen.  Pushing the on/off switch right at the moment that the printer starts up, causes the printer to shut off, but as soon as I start it up again, the same message reappears and the cycle starts again.

  • Forced or abrupt (crash etc) server shutdown detected, starting recovery

    Hi,
I have encountered following error message in server.log of Oracle10gAS ver 10.1.2.0.2.
"Forced or abrupt (crash etc) server shutdown detected, starting recovery process..."
I got this message when I was pushing 1000 xml requests to a receiving servlet in Oracle10gAS Ver. 10.1.2.0.2. Out of 1000 requests, few of the request were not being reached to the receiving servlet. I amm hoping the problem would be becuase of the server being restarted automatically.
Could anybody who had faced this problem help me out as this is a showstoper and needs to be resolved ASAP.

    hi chchang,
Have you solved your problem? If so, please let me know the solution.
Since im facing the same sort of problem. But in out case, the forced shutdown operation occurs frequently (within 10 -15 mins).
    Thanks in advance..

  • What is the correct way to deal with an improper shutdown?

Front Row was not responding, and I couldn't get out of it by pressing the expose button or escape or anything like that. Normally if an application is not responding, I just go to the dock and force quit, but I couldn't do that in Front Row. I didn't know what to do so I just held the power button until the computer turned off. Now I realize I could have tried command alt esc to get to a force quit menu. Is there something I need to do after I power down with out properly shutting down? Windows used to do a disk check if I did an improper shutdown.
I went into the console to try and figure out what the problem was, and there are some weird messages about fsck and QL Errors, and they don't seem to have anything to do with Front Row, but I guess I'm wondering what they mean or if there is anything to worry about. I feel so stupid asking these questions, it's just that I've never had to shut down my Mac improperly like this, and I just want to make sure everything is all right.

    Jeff,
These circumstances are exactly what journaling is for. In other words, you need do nothing more than you already have. Improper shutdowns can still cause problems, but journaling goes a long way toward side-stepping any issues that arise.
If the improper shutdown did more damage than the journal is able to overcome (unlikely), you'll probably know it right away. I'm guessing that you haven't noticed any serious problems, so it is safe to assume nothing has happened.

  • Unable to execute update commands after improper shutdown

    Hi!
    It sounds a little strange.
I am unable to execute update commands from my application. My machine was shutdown improperly. Then I loaded the datastores again. I was able to execute select commands but unable to execute update commands. It was working fine before shutdown.

    Hi Chris!
SQLExecute method of ODBC is returning -1.
I have checked the syntax of the query its also correct. I am also very confused on it why is this happening. If I execute the update command from ttisql it works ok.
The code is the same that we discussed in our previous conversation.
The steps I did after improper shutdown:
    1. Started TimeTen daemon >ttdaemonadmin -start
    2. Loaded the Data store >ttAdmin -ramLoad spiderM
    3. Executed the code
The output of ttstatus is as follows:

  • My C6180 All in One printer displays an Improper Shutdown message

Printer doesn't respond when I press OK button...keeps recycling same Improper Shutdown message.  Only button it responds to is ON/Off one.  Have tried unplugging power cord but that didn't work.
Initial problem was message that photo tray was open....tried all kinds of things and kept getting same message.  Couldn't shut printer off so pulled power plug.   Then started to get Improper Shutdown message when turned back on.
