Improve browsing experience

Hi, I just transfered from pc to mac a couple of weeks ago, and from firefox to safari.
windows to mac was pretty easy, but firefox to safari is going kinda slow for me.
I have a couple of questions, I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me, i've read some safari help, and researched forums and add-ons and still can't solve my problems.
So here it goes:
- Bookmarks: Is there a way to bookmark some pages and to open them using keyboard-shortcuts in new tabs? I know I can use cmd+1 for example and the bookmark will open in the active tab. This doesn't work for me, cause during my workflow i find myself pressing cmd+t, then cmd+1, then again cmd+t, cmd+2. In firefox with the speed dial add-on everything was faster: ctrlshift1, ctrlshift2. I know that in safari I can make folders in the bookmarks menu, and then using the mouse I can open in tabs. That still doesn't work cause it's slower and I don't need to open all the bookmarks from the folder at once.
- Open files after downloading: I know this can be done automatically, but is there a way to choose which application should open each type of downloaded file. For example, if I download a .png file it should automatically open with photoshop.
- Color picker: Is there a way to install an add-on that can pick the color from the page I'm browsing? In firefox I was using one in the following way: After pressing: shift+esc, the mouse cursor changed in a precise color-picker, and after mouse-clicking over a color, the color code was copied in the cash memory, and afterwards I could ctrl+v anywhere I needed.
- Tab navigation: Is there a way to change the active tabs with mouse short-cuts? I was using an add-on which was giving me the following option: Holding the right click and pressing the left click I was navigating the tabs from left to right, and vice-versa.
That's about it. Thanks for your time. I truly hope there's someone who can help me. I know all this requests make me look a little spoiled, but if I can solve all this issues my work speed will double, only because of this small things. I don't want to switch back to firefox cause safari's working a little faster, is more good-looking , and I made a promise to myself to use as much mac os applications as possible.
I also have a bonus question regarding photoshop. Is there a way to make all it's window's and tabs be part of one window, so I wouldn't see thru photoshop the desktop, or other applications running in the background?
Thanks again!
I'm looking forward at your replies.

Greetings,
Is there a way to bookmark some pages and to open them using keyboard-shortcuts in new tabs?
Not at this time; maybe never.
I know this can be done automatically, but is there a way to choose which application should open each type of downloaded file.
You can use RCDefaultApp, though that doesn't mean it will open as soon as you download the file; it means that once you double-click on a file you downloaded it will open in the application you chose.
Is there a way to install an add-on that can pick the color from the page I'm browsing?
Already built-in to the Mac OS Color Picker. You click on the magnifying glass, then you can mouse over the area of the color you want to copy and click once; the color is put in the color well and you can then drag and drop it from there. If you download ColorTagGen, it will generate the RGB and Hex color values for you.
Is there a way to change the active tabs with mouse short-cuts?
No.

  • Firefox automatically sends some data to mozilla so that we can improve your experience.

i tried asking this in a similar topic and got no response and marked as answered so ill ask it again. i already had 'Enable Telemetry' and 'Enable Crash Reporter' disabled but i still got the popup. i'm not sure why firefox is saying it's automatically sending mozilla data when both options are disabled.
    it used to say
will you help improve mozilla firefox by sending information about performance, hardware, usage and customizations to mozilla?
    but that was changed to
firefox automatically sends some data to mozilla so that we can improve your experience.
this makes me think firefox is still sending data regardless. so as long as both of those options are disabled firefox is not sending ANY info about me? if that's the case mozilla really needs to update the message. privacy policies are usually so vague and shadily written by lawyers that they are just about useless.

Firefox 20 has a new message to prompt you to check your settings. This is in preparation for a future feature called health reporting, but currently the only categories are the same old ones: telemetry and crash data.

  • QuickTime 7 update changes Safari browsing experience for 10.3.9 Panther

    Dear friends,
If this topic has been covered already, please forgive this posting. I have searched the Message Board on this and only found one post (which was back in October). I am running 10.3.9 Panther, and after updating from QT 6 to QT 7, I am seeing some odd behaviors in Safari.
When I scroll up or down through a web page, the Flash or QT advertisements seem to "bob" up and down, and do not stay fixed in one place. (In fact, any QuickTime clip or Flash animation "bobs" up and down.) This is a definite change from my browsing experience when I had QT 6 installed (where everything was a fixed on the web page when I scrolled up or down). It is not the end of the world, but it is a bit annoying (especially since I will be experimenting with web development soon, and want to have an "accurate" view of my pages). Even movie trailers "bob" up and down when I select them from Apple's QT site.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what is going on from a technical standpoint? Thank you all for your time and efforts.
NOTE: I have also posted this on the Safari Discussions, but since this problem appears to stem from QuickTime 7 (at least, that's my working theory), I thought I would post here as well.

I installed iLife 06 on my G5 1.8 DP running OSX 10.3.9 Panther. It required the install of QuickTime 7.0.4. Now, in Safari everytime I want to listen to a music clip and get the QT pop up music player, when I close the QT window, it crashes Safari. I used the link posted in quite a few threads here to deinstall QT 7.0.4 (and revert to QT 7.0.1), and the Safari/QT problem is gone. However, I have now lost features in the various iLife programs which will only work with QT 7.0.4. If it is any consolation, this problem was NOT unique to OSX 10.3.9. I had the same problem on my G4 PowerBook 1.5 12" as well. The solution was the same, but, with the loss of features in iLife 06. Hopefully, Apple will come out with some update SOON which remedies this conflict.

  • Extreme ram usage leading to slow browsing experience.

    Hello
I have been using firefox for a long time. this problem has persisted but it was not much of a problem then as it is now. The problem is as follows:
I have two windows open. one window has 30 tabs open and the other has 12 tabs open. The problem is that even if i do not use any of those windows, you can observe the ram usage, in task manager, it is consistently increasing. When this usage reaches 2800mbs, the browser starts to get slow and as it reaches 3200mbs, the browser is literally freezing for like 20 seconds by saying "Not responding" and then coming back to life and then after a few page change again it happens. this is really annoying.
In order to solve this issue i have to force close the browser and reopen it and restore the previous session to get my pages back and make them work at a decent speed.
My friends who use google chrome, they have even more tabs open and their browsing experience is quite smooth. I personally like firefox more as i am used to it and also its add ons are good, but this problem is really annoying.
Just to let you know if you start to think that my laptop cannot handle this load
    My laptop specs are:
    Core i7 2670qm
    13gb ddr3 ram
    1tb hdd
    nvidia gtx560m 2gb
Kindly look into this matter and let me know if there is a fix to this issue.
Hope to hear from you soon.
    Thank You

  • Update Skype now to improve your experience

Over the past year, we’ve introduced lots of exciting new ways to bring people together, such as free group video calls, video messaging and chat enhancements.
We want everyone to experience the best Skype has to offer – from enhanced quality to better reliability to improved security – and the newest version of Skype is the way to do that. So everyone can benefit from the latest improvements, we’ll retire older versions of Skype across all platforms, including mobile devices, in the near future. It’s easy to update Skype...

I'm more than a little concerned about this - if my current version of Skype is going to be "retired" and will sign me out by force and not allow me to sign back in, and I don't have one of the newest operating systems on my computer, am I pretty much screwed? Because that's really how it sounds. My company uses Skype to communicate, and I can't just tell IT we need to upgrade our operating systems because this program decided to make itself useless. Edit: The way this is all being handled is really confusing. I was looking in the support forums for other Mac users who don't have Mavericks, and found this thread where I could get a newer version (6.15) that would work for me. Apparently version 6.15 runs on Snow Leopard (which I have, on both my work and home computers) and when I went to check what version I currently had installed, it was version 5.8, which had me befuddled because I've been getting all the automated Skype updates, the latest of which was probably two or three weeks ago. Did version 5 just stop being "smart" about its own updates and not inform me that there was a version 6 available that would run on my OS? Is this version 6.15 the "new" version being touted on the downloads page (which doesn't state which version number you'd be downloading - not helpful)? Because if so, you're freaking everybody out with incorrect system requirements. If the system requirements listed there are correct, please make the information readily available about what versions will run on what OSes and where to download the ones that will work for us.

  • Upgrade suggestions to improve Windows Experience Index scores on a D10

I received my new D10 last month and it is a DREAM MACHINE! Excellent build quality.
I am primarily a SOHO user (MS Office, Quicken, Photoshop Elements, etc.). I ordered the machine with the entry-level video card (256MB NVIDIA NVS290). Here are my Windows Experience Index scores (Vista 64):
    Memory = 5.0
    Graphics = 3.4
    Gaming graphics = 4.6
    Primary hard disk = 5.9
The base score is 3.4 due to the lowest (general graphics) score. I would like to use the Aero GUI and the base score seems marginal to support a smooth and fast Aero interface. If I upgrade to the FX1700 card (like ‘biowizard’s S10 machine below), would this increase my base score significantly on my D10? I know that it is I hard to predict the graphics score without actually installing the card in my machine, but if there is a reasonable chance of improving the base score, I might upgrade to a higher-end card.
Thanks for any advice. And thanks to Erik for his earlier advice in helping me to selecting a suitable configuration before I ordered the D10.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

speed in design/photography apps will be faster with a high-end card.   my D10 was ordered with an FX 370 since (for me) it was only ~$11 more than the NVS 290.   in both photoshop CS3 and CS4, the FX 3700 kills the 370 in all aspects: RAW conversion, filter speed, refresh speed, etc.   my new FX 4800 isn't much faster than the 3700 but gives me 3x more memory, which is important working with 21 megapixel RAW images on a 30" display.
one issue i have with the FX 370/570/1700 platform cards is that the fans are small and loud.   the 3700, 4800, and 5800 are almost dead silent.   if you want a quiet card, i personally wouldn't recommend getting a 1700.
quadro cards are built for longevity using high-end components.   i wouldn't worry at all about a fan failing.

  • Improve browsing performance of a SSAS Dimension

    Hi,
I have a huge dimension with almost 20 million rows. Browsing the Dimension takes a lot of time. Please help me on improving the dimension browse performance. I tried searching in the internet nut I am able nto find only the articles related
to improving the Measure performance but nothing about Dimension.

    Hi Venkata,
According to your description, you want to improve the performance of browsing a huge dimension. Right?
As yger mentioned, we could create a default measure in your cube. Otherwise it will query all measure groups when you pulling out your huge dimension. We can change the default measure to empty hidden field, which will speed up this
kind of queries. For more information about optimizing performance on dimension design, please refer to the link below:

  • Improved user experience transferring from APF to webDAV volume

We've all experienced how files that we drag from our Desktops and drop on folders on the same volume are "received" at their destination and "lost" at their origin. They move.
Users in my organization desire a similar experience when dragging files from their Desktops to folders NOT on the same volume, particularly remote volumes; or ones mounted using a different protocol, like http (webDAV to be exact)--whether on same volume or not. They prefer not having to dispose of needlessly remnant files on their Desktops.
I'm responsible for providing a solution that delivers this experience. I suspect this will require an Applescript.
I have written one that is basically functional. It calls a handler within a folder action to delete files still selected after copying of them to the attached folder completes.
I include my script below. My interest in posting here is twofold.
First: maybe someone can help me make this script work better. I'm still learning, and I haven't gotten it to handle important cases properly.
Second: I wonder whether this has not already been done. I've looked at MacScripter, Applescriptsource, Apple Discussions, and certain individual scripters' sites; but keywords I've come up with haven't gotten me results.
In advance and for any assistance, thanks!
Here is my script. I know it fails if I get an overwrite dialog as a copy operation begins.
If in the Finder, deselection occurs or selection is changed as script runs, no files or wrong files get deleted. I've also had the script delete a file that never got copied to its destination when a permissions dialog came up.
I'd rather no one actually run this script. Just examine it.
The script gets attached to a webDAV site's icon that appears on the Desktop once connection is made. This seems to work like a folder; hence my use of folder actions.
That icon goes away if I disconnect, but I would need the script to work every time connection is made. There are probably other issues.
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving these_items
    call()
    end adding folder items to
    on call()
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set fileList to selection
    repeat with theFile in fileList
    delete theFile
    end repeat
    end tell
    end call

This OS behavior is there for a reason.
Good question. Thanks for noticing my post at all much less thinking critically on the subject.
webDAV site is to hold users' working folders. In our case, there will be a lot of dragging from Home folders (including Desktop) to webDAV.
The experience will naturally be compared with that of dragging files to the usual place for working files: a local AFP volume. Since drags to webDAV are going to fail by comparison on speed, I'd like to deliver comparability of the "move" experience.
What if your users want to copy (not move) an item to
    a network volume?
As for dragging to other volumes, only the webDAV site would have the folder action. I should have made it clear: I'm talking about getting this functionality only in the case of users accessing their webDAV-hosted working folders.
I can understand readers thinking my aim was to change OS behavior. My fault, the vagueness on this point.
Anyway, Cyclosaurus, don't get me wrong. It relieves me know about the command-drag feature--that's great!

  • Creating Caches for faster browsing experiences

I really like the functionality with spry tabbed panels.  I am creating an online portfolio and in one of my pages, I would like to put up many documents that I have created over the years.  These documents (mainly pdfs) come from the root folder at average sizes of about 100kb per document.  I also tried to accomodate browsers who don't have built in PDF readers in their web browser (eg. firefox) by providing the document via a Scribd embed.
As a newb, i'm learning things on the fly and on this fly, i've discovered that with all these Scribd embeds loading up simultaneously, the page contains the set of tabbed panels can be quite slow.  Gramps has been awesome in suggesting that I use a user activated pop-up and by using caches.
I understand how caches work, but not sure how I can actually code one into my site.
Is it standard protocol for people to use a cache manifest maker?
How do I cache the embed codes given to me from scribd?
Where do I attach the manifest html code? at the top of every page?
If the data from the manifest is downloaded by the browser on page1, when the viewer navigates to page2, will the data still be accessible or will it require a second download.

  • Chrome ruined my browsing experience! Please help me fix...

I'm new to Mac and love it, but I think I may have made a rookie mistake.
I installed Google Chrome on my Macbook Pro-R for my browsing and Safari for my college courses. Since I had to enable all cookies and disable popup blocker I felt it wasn't secure enough, but a buddy of mine said chrome accepts all cookies by default and Chrome's pop up blocker is bad and doesn't block anyway.
So I installed Adblockplus extension from the chrome store for chrome browser. I found out that I like firefox more so I started using that. I didn't want 3 browsers so I uninstalled the adblock plus then uninstalled chrome.
Then I ~library > found chrome and deleted it and it's cache files.
After all that I noticed various websites don't have all the ads, especially flash based ones. Now I know this may be a good thing for some of you, but it also effects things that aren't ads. For example the scrolling store ad on www.cartoys.com main home page is blocked. So I can't see what sales they have or what they're advertising. Other websites do this too. It's frustrating to have a big blank spot in stuff I'm browsing through. I wonder if it's important info or not.
It effects all my browsers; Safari, Firefox, Nightlies, etc.
I uninstalled all my browsers and I'm currently operating on just Safari and the problem is still there.
    Any idea?

Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions
If there are any installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

This time its a question to our customers:
If you insisted on keeping SMUs, SPs, Install rollback and the things you have gotten used to today, how would you change the install process to make it simpler, but still provide what we do now?
Or asked differently what do struggle with today when it comes to Installing/Upgrading Software and what would you like to see improved.

    >For example we were running 4.3.4 on our ASR9K and faced few bugs. Most of them were fixed in >SP3. We raised a ticket with TAC and they told us we had to install >asr9k-px-4.3.4.CSCul58246.tar before upgrading to SP3. Unfortunately, this fix needs >asr9k->px->4.3.4.CSCug75299.tar and asr9k-px-4.3.4.CSCui94441.tar. This means to upgrade a >router from 4.3.4 to SP3, you actually need to reboot it 3 times!!! By optimizing as much as we can >this process, this means a maintenance of ~50min which is a lot of downtime for our customers!
Mathieu the SP Readme has been updated to include these per-requistes, so hopefully in the future it shouldn't be required. This process of pre-req smus for SP are not needed from 5.1.3 on.
    >Why not releasing a 4.3.4-SP image each time your release a SP? At least providers could turboboot >it already patched?
Turboboot is the last thing we want you guys to do, its slow and painful, turboboot should rarely be used.
    >Concerning turboboot, the transfert speed thru an integrated management port is catastrophic. A good way would be to be able to transfer files with HTTP / FTP >during a turboboot.
We don't have a TCP stack in ROMMON and we don't plan to support it. We will support things like ONIE and IPXE in the future.
    >Then if transfers are done in a fast & efficient way, we could save time by directly sending an >uncompressed image over the network instead of waiting for the router to decompress the archive.
I like the uncompressed image idea, we are exploring that.
Thanks for the feedback and we'll keep you posted.

  • Web/Email experience on your HTPC Mini

I can understand why people have enjoyed the Mac Mini as a pure HTPC, once it is setup in the entertainment room. Here's a question for those of you who currently have your Mac Mini connected to your HDTV and use it dual purpose: HTPC and basic computer tasks such as email, web, etc. Are there many of you out there, or are these HTPC's relegated to just that, HTPC's?
How would you rate your experience using your HTPC Mini also as a computer? What accommodations have you had to make to improve that experience?
Some unthikables for me are running USB wires across the coffee table or having a separate mouse or trackball next to me on the couch. I can envision a bluetooth keyboard and integrated trackpad, but have yet to find the right one. (Logitech diNovo Edge looks most promising?).
How about the size of onscreen fonts? Do your eyes hurt from squinting at small fonts 10+ feet away? Even if my 40" LCD was capable of 1080p (which it's not), I would probably have to run the Mini's desktop at 720p, just to make the OS's text legible. Assuming your HDTV doesn't cover your entire wall, do you find yourself constantly straining or using "Apple''" to make fonts bigger in your browser?
    Thanks for sharing your experiences.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Sony KDL-40S2010 HDTV

From, 1 to 10 I would rate my experience with the macmini as HTPC with an 8. Here is why:
    1) No noise at all comparing with a standard PC.
    2) Low cost if you compare with a custom made PC as HTPC.
    3) All software works: internet, email, youtube, music player, DVD player, MIDI player.
    4) Good communication with the wireless keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth)
    5) FrontRow and the moni-remote make a good couple.
    6) Can do Unix, Linux, VNC from my other machines.
    7) Everybody at home understands it. Cam start working with it with zero training.
    8) Unbelievable small footprint for such computing power.
    9) Burning CDs is a breeze.
    Now, responding to your inquiries:
USB: Try to install the macmini as close as possible to the display to save on cabl and reduce noise and cable losses. I bought a mount bracket for the wall (behind the 26" TV flat panel), which comes with four USB in the front. Right now I am using one USB port only for the MIDI keyboard.
Location: I installed the 26" LCD display on the wall in the kitchen dining room. So, I have the table to put the keyboard and mouse.
Font: even with the 26" screen fonts are kind of small when you try to watch an inmternet page or the menus from 8' away. Then it comes handy the Ctrl+Scroll where you can zoom-in and out. Also, what I did is set the resolution to 1024x768 instead of the maximum resolution (1380x1024). That enhance the menu fonts to something more legible. And yes, the eyes hurt for the first two weeks. Then, you get used to it.
What do I dislike of the macmini as HTPC:
    i) The mini-remote is too directional; it is optic not RF.
ii) The DVD player software does not show subtitles for all the movies.
iii) Macmini is slow to play divX or mpg movies via network. I even tried with VLC, but you can see the delay. Not fast enough.
iv) DVD recorder only works reliably from Parallels Windows. Could not record yet a workable data DVD from the pure Mac OSX.
I think, so far, the Macmini has been a remarkable experience.
    Good luck.

  • Firefox 22 and higher shows fonts too big or too small, sometimes on the same page. How to "fix" this annoying 'improvement"?

Since the update *every* website displays with the fonts too big or too small. On many websites, some of the fonts are too big and some are too small *on the same page*
This makes for a horrible browsing experience.
I've tried setting the layout.css.PixelsPerPx to a value of 1, but all it does is make most websites fonts too small, while leaving some websites fonts too large, with many web pages having fonts simultaneously too large and too small.
The old behavior was quite acceptable and I'd really like to restore the behavior to what it was. How can I do that? Or do i just switch to Chrome and be done with it?

Did you even bother to read the question?
"I've tried setting the layout.css.PixelsPerPx to a value of 1, but all it does is make most websites fonts too small, while leaving some websites fonts too large, with many web pages having fonts simultaneously too large and too small."
This "fix" doesn't work. Hundreds of people are complaining about how their browser was broken by this "improvement". Why not address the real problem instead of telling users to apply a useless hack to fix a programming error?

I recently installed the uzbl-browser, which is just great.  It uses dmenu for bookmarks, and it has been suggested (I can dredge up posts if necessary) that the "patched" version dmenu-vertical will improve the experience by listing the bookmarks vertically (horizontally you can see the first three or so, and then end up scrolling).  Looking in the AUR there are two packages: dmenu-vertical and dmenu-vertical-xft.  I chose the version with XFT support.
When I tried to install it, pacman complained that it conflicted with dmenu, which was already installed.  I uninstalled dmenu, which required uninstalling uzbl-browser, installed dmenu-vertical-xft, and then attempted to install uzbl-browser.  When I answered "no" to that installation's suggestion that I replace dmenu-vertical-xft with dmenu, the install aborted.
So I have reverted to uzbl-browser with vanilla dmenu, but I would like to get it working with the vertical patch.  Has anybody done this, and if so how?
    Thanks - Hy
