Improve the range of my wrt320N router?

Hellu,
How can I improve the range of the WRT320N router that is operating on 5Ghz?
The router is fixed and will not be moved.
Can I adjust the range capacity through firmware? or add antenna's?, bandwidth... etc...

As your Router is an Dual Band Router, and It can work on 2.4GHz Wireless Network or on 5GHz network. However different wireless channels has different significance to improve the wireless performance of your Router. Once you set the different channels on your Wireless Router, then you can set the security mode to WPA persoanl, as if you have  Windows XP OS installed on your Computer, As most of the XP Computer dosent work on your WPA2 Security, and Disable the Wireless MAC filter on your Router and check if you are getting connected to your Wireless Network using the 5GHz Network.Follow the settings bellow and i think this might improve the signal strength on your Wireless Computer.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
- Here select manual configuration...And select 5GHz Channel...... Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...
SSID Broadcast should be Enable and Click on Save Settings...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 50 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2200 Change the RTS Threshold to 2200 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

I need to limit the range of my wireless router   WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.  I don't want to put on a password if I can avoid it.   Thanks for you advice in advance.  Milwaukie

Trying to confine a wireless signal to your home is not a practical solution to security concerns.  The distance that a wireless signal will travel is mainly limited by the receiving antena and sensitivity of the receiver.  An ordinary wireless receiver can probably pick up your signal for 200 to 1000 feet.  A great receiver could probably pick up your signal from a mile or more.  The best alternatives are:
    a) convert your system to a wired system, or,
    b) encrypt your wireless using a good encryption method (WPA or preferably WPA2) and use a strong password.

  • What's the range of this new router from apple?

what's the range of this new router from apple?

One, it would help to specifiy which specific model/device.
Two, reading the specs page for the device likely would answer the question.
Three, what in the heck does this have to do with iTunes for Windows, the forum to which this silly question was posted?

  • How do you set up an Airport Extreme to extend the range of a Verizon router?

Basically I want to know if the new Airport Extreme can be used fro extend the range of a Verizon modem/router?

Not by wireless. The apple routers can act as repeaters only to another apple router.
You can use ethernet or homeplug (EOP adapter) to place the Airport in another location where you need wireless and set it up in bridge mode.
Or you can buy another airport.. a cheap second hand extreme is very possible.. plug that into  the Verizon by ethernet and extend with the second apple wireless.. but nope.. you cannot do it directly.

  • Can Express extend the range of a wired router

Airport Express box reads "can extend the range only of an Airport Extreme or Airport Express wireless network". My daughter is moving into a college-town house that has (I think from the cable company) a 6 port wired router that sends a wall outlet ethernet connection to 6 rooms. If I don't or can't replace the router can I use the Airport Express and plug it near one of the 6 ethernet jacks? Can I use a Linksys Wireless Access Point device, or, is it like the Geek Squad wannabe salesman at Best Buy said, "It will be very hard for your daughter to configure this. You have to have the right settings".
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Like I said it can be done, I would probably change there Router to a Multiport wireless router, and change it out.
There are several different options. you just need to decide what you want to do.
If you feel uncomfortable about doing it yourself, Get a hold of your friend that is a wizard and have him do it. It really is not that tough. but if you are not comfortable, or not sure what and how then leave it.
    I can't believe it isn't already wireless.

  • Can AP Extreme be used to extend the range of my Linksys router?

I use a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and want to get a stronger signal at the other end of the house. Is there some way I can use an Apple Airport Extreme Base station as a substation of the Linksys to provide signal to the weak spot?

It may be possible as certain models of the Linksys WRT54G are known to be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts. I suggest that you do a Google-search on the terms "WRT54G AirPort WDS." You'll find a number of articles on those who were successful in doing so.
Here are a couple Apple Discussions articles to get you started:

  • I need to improve the wireless router range of my time capsule. What sort of extender (repeater?) should I be considering?

I need to improve the wireless router range of my time capsule. What sort of extender (repeater?) should I be considering? Will it affect my use of the time capsule as a hard drive backup?

In order to insure compatibility, you need to consider an Apple AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme if you are thinking about "extending" or "repeating" the network wirelessly.
It is also possible to extend the network by connecting an AirPort Extreme or Express back to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, which will provide better performance.
If you have a new "tower" model of the Time Capsule, then you would need a new "tower" version of the AirPort Extreme to take full advantage of the capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If you have an earlier "flat" or "square" version of the Time Capsule, then an AirPort Express would be a good match for the capabilities of the Time Capsule.
An "extender" will not affect the operation of your Time Capsule other than allow wireless devices to connect from a greater range at higher speeds.

  • How can I boost the range of my router?

I have fios for phone/tv/Internet and use the Verizon MI24-WR router which works fine but my bedroom on the other side of the house doesn't get a signal. Any recommendation on improving the signal? I have the router in the office connected to the printer, PC and a"cable box" so moving the router would be a pain.
I have an old Linksys WRT54G that I could use as a booster but have no idea how to do that.
Does Verizon update router firmware? Replace older routers?

Firmware updates should happen automatically - login to  your router and from here http:\\192.168.1.1
    - advanbced - firmware upgrade to verify what version you have. From what I read routers are replaced based on issues you are having as well as your speed tier (75 Mb/s and up get the latest router)
I defer to the experts AFA extending the range of your WIFI please see http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Home-Networking/Actiontec-router-does-not-support-wireless-range-extend...

    Yes, that is correct.
Did you have the instructions that came with your Airport Extreme?  Are you sure you have it setup properly?  Here is the setup guide:

Ensure you have everything setup properly.  Once you do this and if you are still having trouble, follow Star's instructions.

  • PROBLEMS WITH THE RANGE OF THE ROUTER

I have a router in my home, but i just can get connected to the internet only in the livingroom. The problem became by the range of the router. So i would like to know if buying the "Airport ExtendAIR Omni de Dr Bott" i should have internet in my little house . . . THANKS !

I purchased this Dr. Bott antenna and it didn't do anything for the range of the AirPort. In actuallity, if your base station is close to intererence sources (i.e. satellite dish) the antenna actually makes the signal worse.
I've tried extending the range using 2 Airport Express, but the signal continues to be pretty weak. My iMac and PowerBook are within 15 feet of the base station and the max signal strength I get is in the 40's.
I gave up on the AirPort and bought myself a Netgear RangeMax. It's a pain to set-up (you gotta give credit to Apple's simplicity that everything just works well together), poor documentation, but when it's up and running the signal strength is great: My signal averages in the 60-70's. I live in a four story townhouse and on the fourth floor, I get a signal in the 40's!

  • Can I use an airport express to add airplay to (and extend the range of) a network with a netgear N750 Router?

I have a Netgear N750 router. Can I buy an airport express and configure it to extend the range of my current network and allow me to use AirPlay from anywhere on that SSID?

You can configure the AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that is being provided by the Netgear router for use with AirTunes.
But, the Express will not be able to "extend" the range of your wireless network.
The "extend a wireless network" feature only works if you have an Apple router as your main device. This feature is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.

  • The range of Airport Extreme is shrinking or so it seems.  How can it be improved?

My Airport Extreme is behind one wall but the signal strength has become weaker over time.  Is there any way to improve the signal strength?
    Thanks.
    Jay

Assuming that your AirPort Extreme is not failing, proper placement of the base station may improve bandwidth performance especially in the presence of Wi-Fi interference.
Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • Need Help in improving logic for determining the range

    Hi guys,
I need some help in my program logic to determine the range of value. My purpose of this program is to find which combinations have the lowest amplitude.
In the attachment is a set of number.
    e.g 10    0 is a combination.
Each combination, I will need to draw a graph of data acquired using this combination VS gray level. There is 255 gray level. Every 5 gray level I will acquire a point so I will have 52 points.
Next, I will get the maximum value - minimum value. And this is the amplitude for the combination. I can do all this function, however it is not practical for me to do it this way until 360 360. There is a round 1200+ combination. It requires a long time since I need to interface all this function with my hardware.
The graph of each combination maybe a irregular shape. Do any of you have a logic to help me to shorten the process and find the range of values (combination) where the lowest amplitude may lies. Thanks!!

    Hi Johnsold,
This is a example of my result. This is only a portion of it. The last column is the amplitude, I store all the 52 points into array and used Array Min and Max function. Then I use max - min to get the amplitude. From the amplitude I cannot see any pattern. Can you please advice me on it. Thanks!!!

  • WRT320N - What do I need to do to allow me to see the laptops connecting to this router?

I am a networking noob (somewhat). I need to allow the laptops connecting to this router to see a shared storage file on the wired side of the network. How do I do this, what setting changes do I need to make.
I apologize in advance if this has been covered in a previous discussion, I did not take the time to search it out.
    Thanks, Mark

The computers wired and wireless are in the same workgroup, file sharing is turned on, but the wired computers cannot see the wireless computer that are connected to the router.
I am sorry if I am being unclear. The router is connected to a LAN consisting of 20 computers (wired, outside of this router). I have a computer set up to share files across the network. I can see the computer from all other wired computers (even in different workgroups) outside the router. All computers "inside" the router (192.168.1.***  etc) cannot see "outside" the router to the rest of the wired network (192.210.***.***   etc).
I am sorry if I am being difficult but it sure seems to me that there is a setting in the router that is blocking this from happening.

  • Can I use an airport extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem

Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.
    Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Tesserax,
Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices.
I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.
