Improved forum search facility?

Hi,
is there any chance that the search facility can be improved for this forum?
I'm a pl/sql - forms developer who is trying to move to JDeveloper ADF - UIX (and hopefully soon, ADF Faces)
Having an advanced option where we can write more selective search criteria would be a great bonus e.g. ("tree" AND ("UIX" OR "Faces")).
Also, is it necessary to return a hit for every occurence of the search criteria within one thread? Would it not be more effective to simply display the thread heading once indicating that your search criteria returned a hit 1 or more times within this thread?
Unless of course these options are available and I just can't find them.
This aside, thanks for all the help and code snippets available on this site. It's been a big help over the past few months.

One of the prerequsites steps is for us to check SDN before raising a support call. The way the site works now makes this a little harder, or at least more effort.

I'm sure they'll get it sorted, eventually, especially as we are possibly raising a few more support calls now as many people can't be bothered to go through the extra effort to try and find a solution using SDN. So I guess it's in SAP's favour to get this working ASAP.

Has the SDN forum search facility changed?

When in any of the forums I used to be able to search in relation to the forum area that I was in. However, that option seems to have gone and I only have the option shown in the top right corner to search the all forums. For example, when in the CRM WebUI forum and search for 'Remove button from toolbar' I get loads of ALV/ABAP postings from another forum area.
There used to be another search option for the particular forum you were in. Am I alone in not being able to see this?.
I noticed that this sudenly happened about a month back.

I have been getting frustrated using the search on these forums. I find the content very useful (especially as I cannot seem to find any other forums for Oracle Portal) but the search facility is very poor.
Firstly, the Search will on search for an exact match in the body of the messages, not the subject at all! This is very annoying as people usually sum-up there question in the subject and often do not repeat the subject in the message.
Secondly, the search looks for exact matches of your search string, so searching for more than one word become difficult. Bascially, it does only an exact match, not a word search, so forget about using keywords to search on as you would do in every other search engine and be very carful of the order of your words, you'll get a completly different set of results by swaping the order of your words... :(
eg. Selecting "ALL FORUMS", try searching for "Customizing Change Password Page". no hits? ok try "Customizing Password" still no hits? ok try "Customizing the Password". still no hits? ok just try "customizing". You get 10 Pages of 20 (Oracle conviently puts them over 10 pages so you cannot view them all on a html page and do your own secondary search using CTRL-F). Well, this is too many, lets just try "Change Password". again 20 x 10+ pages. At least this time we've got some that also have the work customizing in the subject. If only we got here on the first search... Don't even think of adding the word "PDK" or "Example" to your search...
I have already provided feedback to Oracle on this matter (and am still waiting for a reply). If you would also like the search improved, please also send Oracle some feedback and make this forum more useful. If enough people pester them they might think it's important enought to change. link below:

Improvements to the forum search

I often need to search for hints on the jdeveloper forum.
I would like to suggest some improvement to the forum search
1) when i search with more than one word i would like to see only the results in which all the words appear, or at least to see first the results with all words and then the others
2) in the search results every thread should appear only one time, in my opinion

Forum Search Function - A Question

I know that the Adobe Forum team has worked hard over the last year, to improve the forums' Search Function. The standardization across the various forums, the utility of Search, HAS been improved - thank you for that work.
However, once, after one ran a Search, and received a results page, it was possible to go thread-by-thread in those results, to pick the one, ones, that worked for an OP's situation, and by just using the browser's Back button, the searcher was taken back to the Search results page, for more research. Now, the Back button takes me (Chrome on Windows PC) to the general Discussions page, and not the Search results page. This means that the Search criteria have to be re-added. At first, it would seem that Copy/Paste for the Search criteria would be the best workflow, and just re-do that Search, over and over, reading one thread per Search. However, I use Search most often to help posters get answers, and I use the URL to the existing threads to do that. Here is an example of how I use Search, and how it works for me now - the current Search:
Poster has a question, and many other threads in a forum answer that/those question(s). I find six existing threads, that match my Search criteria. Good so far. I then need to read all six threads, to find the one(s), that are best for the new poster. When I find one, I Copy the URL of that thread, and add that to my Reply to that poster. I cannot Copy the Search criteria, to use in the Search query box, as I just Copied the URL to one thread in the list. I then have to go back to the main Discussions page, and re-initiate my Search, to read the second of the six threads - rather tedious, especially with more than one useful thread.
My workaround now, is to create a NotePad document with my Search criteria, and go back to it, Copying and Pasting those characters, after doing a Copy/Paste of a threads URL. Still tedious, but less typing.
Not sure if the old method, or using Back to get to the Search results page, could be re-implemented, leaving the rest of the Search functions untouched, or if someone knows a neat way to return to the Search results page, that I just am not aware of (do not mind admitting OE on my part, and am open to perhaps a better workflow, for how I normally use Search).

Jacob, unfortunately and although true, that doesn't agree with the image "normal" users get, with those unnecessarily brightly colored badges, and even more unnecessary special backgrounds in their posts, no matter how trivial (and I am not in the least questioning their most legitimate right to post trivial messages)... Their word doesn't become the Bible by the mere fact of being punished with their MVP titles, as the highlighting of their posts seems to suggest.
And yes, I know that -at least- many of you haven't chosen to be nominated as MVPs but, what does the general public think? Most probably, that you all have full moderating powers, and some other powers as well. A sad, artificial, and most unneeded situation -most definitely not an improvement.

BEST PRACTICE FOR AN EFFICIENT SEARCH FACILITY

Whilst in Training, our Trainer said that the most efficiency from the Sharpoint Search would be to install the Search Facility on a separate server (hardware).
Not sure how to have this process done.
Your advice and recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

I have just upgraded to Maverick and now I cannot find certain files. These JPG's are there on my hard drives however . I rely heavily on the search facility and this is slowing me down.

Logical AND not working in the forum search box

Logical AND of search terms does not seem to be working in the MSDN forum search box. Example: I go to the Project Customization and Program forum and type the word
subproject
in the search box. I get a lot of hits. So now I try to reduce the number of hits by typing
subproject AND read
Surprisingly, I now get MORE hits than before. The same thing happens if I enter
subproject & read
Do the MSDN forums not support the standard logical AND combinations of search terms? If they do support these combinations, what is the syntax?

Photo albums are not searched by Spotlight Search. Go to Settings > General > Spotlight Search to see and reorder the available search items.

Forum search doesn't find message but Google does

The forum-search query "icc profiles ilford paper", with the forum "Photoshop Elements" selected, does not find the following message:

I just purchased some ILFORD paper and I downloaded and installed the ICC profile into Windows Vista without any problems. My question is when I open my printer properties and select a paper profile my ILFORD ICC profile is not showing. I have a Canon Pro9000 printer.

Sigh, in general I'm finding it faster and more reliable to use Google to search not only Adobe forums, but the knowledge base and the rest of the Adobe site as well.
Also, the message above is definitely indexed by the forum search engine, since you can retrieve it using the following query:
subject:"icc profiles" ilford paper
Of course, at the time I was searching, I didn't know which keywords were in the subject and which were in the body.

And this suprises who? Never had much luck with the Adobe search, either in old or new forum.

Yes unfortunately it is the only way. Oracle is unable to provide search functionality as it is only a database company, so it is recommended that if you need to search for information you should use Google instead.
Forum search not finding recent posts

HT201285 Search facility not working in mail and calendar?

Why won't the search facility work in mail and calendar? I've just updated the software on my iPhone 5 to IOS 8.1.2 and it worked perfectly before this.

Ok, weird, strange...did ONE more restart and now its working fine...who knows?

The "Search" facility on iTunes is ridiculously inadeqate !!!

The iTunes Store has expanded in leaps and bounds but the "Search" facility has remained the same squatty little box where you can't find exactly what you are looking for and the "Results" display cuts off the end of the results !
What we need are proper advanced search facilities to cope with the size of the content now on the store !!!

There is no power search for my own library, as far as I can tell. And the local search is easier to trip up with trivial mismatches than the store search.

And for some reason it doesn't like extraneous commas locally, but will take 'em in a store search. For example, copy-n-past this from some website into search in the itunes store...

...and get predictable results. Do that locally and you'll get nothing because it doesn't like the comma.
In short, in the 21st century you'd want a music library and store to have a music-specific search that is not easily tripped up by trivial mismatches, misspellings, abbreviations, punctuation and nicknames. Finding, say, which album contains a track I want, is easier on amazon than on itunes, just like using google to find things in wikipedia is easier than using the wiki search. And if an itunes search comes up empty, I copy-n-paste the search into amazon to see if what I'm looking for really isn't available or if I typed something trivially wrong. It's usually the latter.

AR9.x bug in search facility

The attached test sheet, which is also available at:

The bug is particularly insidious as it causes AR to exit

I've now had a chance to try the search-bug.pdf on a Ubuntu 9.04 machine,
the behaviour is certainly different than on my SUSE 10.3 box. AR9.x
passes the test as written i.e. it can find the word "quick." But if I reload
the document and search for another one of the test words (e.g. fox)
AR fails to find the word. Therefore I'm left wondering if the search
facility is accessing an unitialized variable, resulting in variable behaviour.
Another observation which backs this up is that on the SUSE 10.3
box, AR9.x does not exit when searching for the /Widget text "quick"
provided one first searches for a word in the regular page stream.
However it fails to locate the word, again indicating that something is amiss.

p.s. Is there any reason why AR9.1.3 cannot be run using strace?
I tried, but unlike previous AR releases it causes my X-server to hang.

Some contacts are missing, but I can find them with the search facility

I don't know when and how it happened (maybe when I updated to 4.0), but suddenly 75% or more of my contacts disappeared from the iPhone. There is an old back-up copy in iTunes, but it is completely outdated.
The funny thing is that if I do a serach for themissing contacts in teh Search facility of the iPhone, I find them.
Note: Since I upgraded to 4.0, all my contacts are grouped in something called "All" (that did not exist before).
Just for the record, I'm using an iPhone 3GS.
Is there any way to bring back the missing contacts (which are there, somewhere, in the iPhone, because I can find them when I do a search) into the list of contacts?

Couldn't it be that the iPhone has created a group called "All Contacts" that only contains "some" of the contacts? In that case, where would the other contacts be? If I create a new group, it will be empty. So I don't see how would moving contacts from teh "ALl Contacts" group to the new empty group could help.
Another problem is that at first I had only the contacts I had imported from a previous cell phone. Later on, when I thought I was making a backup of these contacts with iTunes, it imported all the info from my Outlook Contacts, 95% of which I did not want in my iPhone. But anyways, that happened long before this problem (not being able to access to all the contacts from the iPhone's Phone application and having to look for them with the iPhone's search facility).
