Providing better access to information...
The current Knowledgebase does a pretty good job of consolidating technical documents but what I would really like to see is a single location where I can access a wide range of Novell documents and very quickly zero in on the relevant ones.
There are still too many places to search when problem solving or trying to remember where I may have previously encountered a particular document. If I need a specific TID and have the number, it's easy to find it (most of the time). If my interest is a bit more general, I may have a large number of documents to sift through. For some things I may even have to visit a different site.
The knowledgebase, in a broader sense, can be taken to mean any information pertaining to Novell, its products & services, its partners, press releases, licensing, training, events, technical documents, forum posts, NUI, Brainshare, patches, downloads, etc. I think it should be wide-ranging in scope - almost like a general purpose search engine. The trick would be to provide a rich set of selection criteria to limit the results.
In addition to the standard keyword search, date range (created/changed), Author, etc. a broad selection of categories would allow the search to be refined to the point where a relatively few meaningful results are returned. Some examples might be:
Product Group / product / release
Location: Region / Country / City
File Format: HTML, PDF, PowerPoint, video, audio, iso, executable, ...
Target audience: Sr. Mgmt., Middle Mgmt., Admin, General, ...
Document Type: TID, CoolSolution, product read-me's, Connections article, white paper, forum post, product announcement, presentation
Subject matter: technical, marketing, sales, training, events, partners, security, patches,
I would expect this list to be enhanced and refined over time to make it more useful.
Of course, we often don't know exactly what we're looking for so I'd like see a breakdown of the results (i.e. number of documents satisfying the various criteria) and the ability to include/exclude certain criteria to refine my selection.
Once my search criteria has been refined to the point where it provides the desired results, I would like to be able to save it. I find often myself searching for the same things over and over again.
Once the search has been saved, it would be very convenient if I could be notified by email whenever any new items appeared that satisfied my search criteria. For example:
- What new TID's or Patches are available for these products?
- What training or other events will be coming to my city during the next 30 days?
- Have any of these documents been updated since I last checked?
I'm sure, given a little time, I could come up with more...:) I hope this helps!

I'm pretty sure the DSC development team looks at these posts so what would you most like to see in the future? For me, I'd like to be able to dynamically add tags without shutting down the engine.

What additional OIM product documentation would you most like to see?

I first worked with with OIM when it was still Xellerate v7 about 7 years ago.
Despite attending the Thor training courses I found the product strangely impenetrable and often found myself in a position where I knew what I wanted to do but was unable to find any reference information or worked examples to tell me what the solution options were.
After several years working with the Sun and IBM IDM products I'm now back in the Oracle world and determined to master the beast this time. However I am still unable to find quality, solution-focussed documentation and am therefore dependent on (and very grateful to) the members of this forum who provide their support and help.
I'd like to ask therefore what additional documents would you really appreciate seeing in the OIM suite?
Whether you're a developer, technical or business analyst or customer representative please let me know. I will collate responses, post a summary and send feedback to Oracle for their consideration.

The OIM documentation is uniformly awful. I think it's a cunning evil plan by Oracle to "encourage" companies to engage Oracle's consultants to do the work.
The writing style is really bad. There are paragraphs and paragraphs of really impenetrable text which you read six times and you still don't understand what they are trying to explain. Quite often all it would have taken to improve it was a picture or a concrete example. There are broken links in the docs, links to topics which the docs say will explain a term and it doesn't even mention it and references to documentation "books" that don't exist.
We're just starting the implementation process here and the biggest lack we're finding is a "Where do I start an implementation?" guide. This would be a "big picture" document containing a high-level view of what the options are for most of the common tasks that are needed when started out. It could cover things like what the options are for doing an initial load of users from an existing system and if you have to deal with multiple trusted sources are you better of using connectors to reconcile with each of them individually or could some magic be done with OVD that would simplify the process.
As a solution to the "where do I start?" question, I've seen suggestions in the forum that you should just get an installation up and running and then basically play about until you've worked out what you want to do. That's not a particularly scientific approach and makes it impossible to provide detailed implementation documentation and estimates up front for when the management wants to know when they are going to see some results from the product that they've spent a small fortune on.
The Oracle By Examples that I have looked at are pretty useful, but I could do with about 10 times as many of them. How about writing your own connectors in Java? How about to creating the organisation's structure as groups in OIM based on tables in a database?
A master index of all the books would be useful or at least the ability to search the complete documentation set. Having one place that had all the most recent documentation would also be a bonus.
There seems to be lots of basic configuration information missing from the documentation. For example, can anybody tell me where the documentation for configuring challenge questions for self-service password resets is? I've looked and looked and haven't found anything.

Your Favorite FreeHand Features You Would Like To See In Illustrator

I am really curious to hear about the favorite features that Freehand users think would be important additions to Illustrator.
I would also be interested in hearing why you think this feature is better than the way Illustrator handles the same task, unless you the feature just doesn't exist in Illustrator.

Just found your question, Wade. Many thanks for asking since it is very encouraging to know that Adobe is aware of Freehand (FH) users' frustrations, beyond the usual learning curve challenge. Many CS3 Illustrator (AI) features are terrific and not available in FH, but the frustration of seeing FH's many intuitive options disappear from our desk top is difficult. I'd hardily amen the words of Ken Nielsen: ... 'incorporate EVERY feature possible from Freehand.' I am quickly improving my ability to exploit AI's advantages but still get frustrated that many of FH options are not available in AI. Here are a few and will try to add others later:
PAGE SIZE TOOL: I cannot change the page size with FH's page tool. To get a page size to fit new art work I have to guess and run the risk of something not being open and not adjusting if I move my work. This is important to keep the white border from appearing in exports, although I have found that making a Clipping Path can solve this. Why not have the FH option, however, of diagonally dragging the corner of the page and fit it the size of the page to the art work?
PEN TOOL DRAWING: The pen tool does not have an option that automatically makes beautifully curved lines (which always and exactly fit the complex map borders I draw), and simply by holding down Option in FH while clicking the pen tool (dragging out in AI is nice sometimes, but I had to buy a Big Wacom tablet to do what FH does naturally).
OPEN/CLOSED PATH: I always knew in FH if my path was 'closed' or 'open.' I know fill does not depend upon this in AI but in my work to know this is very important.
SWATCH BOX: In AI I have to remember the short cut or travel around my 30" screen to change between stroke and fill. In FH it was right in the color palette where it should be. As in the case of layers below, my choice of viewing swatches (small list) does not stick and I have to choose again every time I reopen AI. Have you thought of layers for swatches for those of us who have many?
GRAPHIC STYLES: I thought AI had a 'Redefine' option in the Graphic Style but can't find it. Since AI does not allow the editing of a graphic style in the Style palette, I have to make a new style and toss the old one. FH has both of the possibilities (redefine and editing).
PASTE INSIDE/CUT CONTENTS: Paste Inside, etc. was great in FH. I understand how it works in AI but to have the old FH option, and edit inside (hold down Option) were so easy.
LAYERS: AI's great layer/sub layer/sub layer organization is especially exciting for me since my 300-400 layers in FH can be nicely 'compacted.' This has vast potential and already I cannot live without it. However, you should demonstrate how good it is to new users rather than simply imply 'you'll get used to it.' I have tons of docs with tons of layers (maps and charts).
COMPRESS ALL SUBLAYERS NEEDED: I have my layers collapsed so that my palette is very easy to use, *but* when I close the doc and bring it up again they are all open again and I have to go through and close them. Make them 'stick' so they open the way we close them, and 2) put in a way to deal with sub layers so that we can make all of a certain set of sub layers visible/invisible or locked/unlocked without affecting other layers. Yes, I can drag my mouse down the list, but when I have 600 map city names in their individual sub layers that is a bit much.
A BIT OF TROUBLESHOOTING: A graphic style fill would not change (disappear) although fill color was nothing. I even use 'Break Link to Graphic Style' and tried again. Something is wrong since the stroke changes color if I choose it manually or via a style, but the fill remains the same (one of my styles = 50% red) although I change it many all or via the Graphic Style palette. Thus it appears the the fill is stuck in one mode, or rather two since it will change color or change to gradient, but it will not disappear and always default to the 50% red. I tried quitting the program and bringing it up again, and also rebooting. No change. Finally, after long hours I tried putting the graphic on a new layer and it was okay. Thus, it appears that something can be 'caught' on a layer, in this case the fill color, or rather the fact that I could not get rid of the fill color, no matter what it was. I do have 310 layers in THE doc, most as sub layers under main layers.
Must add that AI's Opacity, Layers, and other features are terrific. I finally have gotten over my reaction in the move from FH to AI, especially since CS3 version sped up the very slow CS2 version. Again, do everything you can to get all of FH features into AI. FH is a tremendous program which relatively few people knew of and exploited. If Adobe wants to create another real success story, follow Ken Nielsen's advice (as you are doing with your question, Wade.)

IWEB Features you would like to see added

Hi I have posted this here to see what users would like from iweb. I hope to compile the list and send it as a suggestion to Apple. It would be good to have one central location for all requests.
I don't know if iweb can support some of these requests but here goes.
Simple Google/search engine listing feature for all iweb sites
Simple site backup to a folder or location/hard drive etc
Easy Transfer, One cilck transfer of site for editing on another computer
Ability to change the text size and font of the home pages and menu bar.
A flash player that takes photos video with an on/off mute function, scalable with the ability to adjust the time each photo is displayed.
A magnification too that allows photos to be enlarged once the cursor hovers over them/scalable in size
A set of flash wipes and transitions for introducing your text/videos.
A paypal shopping cart system, doesn't have to be a full web shop just the facility to sell a few items via our site.
Ability to host a few sites say 4 max. I have a personal site and a small business site and would like to host both ( Maybe I can do this ! I am still discovering things about iweb)
A rapid loading function that you can drop you site into and it will format for quickest loading.
Maybe allow different compression settings like in Final Cut for different types of content.
(don't know if you can do this but it would be great)
A contact page that is linked to my mobile me account as well as my site, this allows me have the one location or a second to forward my mail to.

Here are a few more items for your wish list:
1. ability to import a published site.
2. a full fledged eCommerce / PayPal capability is a must.
3. ability to edit a template and save changes to the template, or create your own.
4. ability to import templates from other iLife or iWork programs such as Keynote and Pages

These aren't meant as suggestions for a specific model, but more improvements for future products.
1. Since most processors now have an integrated GPU, we're losing a lot of back-panel space to HDMI, DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort sockets. FireWire, eSATA, and extra USB sockets are the casualty (admittedly, nobody cares about the first two, but I like having 8 USB sockets!). Why not put the video sockets on a special card that sits along the main PCI-E x16 slot. If you want to use the integrated GPU, you install that in lieu of a video card. Side benefit for systems integrators: No risk that some user will decide to plug his monitors into an inactive motherboard video port.
2. Instead of a backup BIOS system, why can't they find a way to put the BIOS on a MicroSD card? A bad flash can be fixed by taking the card to another PC, rather than having to replace a non-socketed ROM chip. This would be great for boards on a long-lived platform-- if you bought an old board and a new CPU, you could just take out the BIOS card and flash it on another PC, rather than having to do the "can I find/borrow an older CPU to do the flash" dance. In addition, having loads of flash space (even a 128Mb card would be cavernous for this purpose) would allow for cool stuff like "put Memtest86+, or a minimal bootable Linux districution, or other utilities on the card."
3. On a related note-- if that's infeasible, can they put the installed BIOS version on the sticker on the box? That way, you can check, before leaving the store, if the parts are compatible. I know the 990FXA-GD80 "V2" product was the same board with a newer BIOS... but this would eliminate the need to do such an elaborate reworking.

Many cpus made by Intel & AMD do not have an IGP. (I actually search for motherboards that do not include an IGP.) The way it works is that you buy an IGP cpu before you buy a discrete 3d card, generally. Most people who buy an IGP do so because they don't want/need a discrete 3d card. Some motherboards, especially those made by Apple these days, feature surface-mount technology, which means the cpus are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be removed/upgraded. As well, when you add a discrete 3d card into a system with an IGP cpu, and you make whatever bios/efi adjustments are called for, the on-board IGP is disabled. A customer who buys a discrete 3d card and installs it is presumed to know where the "video socket" is located--but even if he's not too sharp, connecting up the disabled IGP won't do anything detrimental, and if he gets no video because he's in the wrong socket he'll soon figure it out...

Well, a UEFI is in a discrete motherboard chip for security purposes that would be hobbled by having systems load a bios from an SD card. The bios or UEFI, these days, is the strongest link in the chain of security in a PC--for instance, UEFI "secure boot" is absolutely dependent on a set of inviolate UEFI instructions. If a hacker can get into the machine UEFI/bios then he can control the machine, essentially, and remedies run at the OS level won't have an effect. Some OEMs like Dell ship machines with bioses/efi's that include links to certain kinds of diagnostic routines, however, so perhaps a Dell is more inline with your preferences than a discrete retail motherboard. When customers buy components like discrete motherboards it is assumed by the manufacturer that they already know enough in general to have little if any trouble installing the board--otherwise, they'd not be buying a discrete motherboard in the first place. Right? Makes sense to me...
As for knowing which motherboards support which cpus, well, MSI has an online list of motherboards you can consult, which includes a list of the cpus each board & efi/bios version supports. References like these should be consulted prior to purchasing a motherboard. And if you are in a retail store that is selling such motherboards, it never hurts to ask for that information in the store--assuming the store isn't completely clueless, they should be able to answer questions like that.
I certainly don't understand why you'd think that it's easier to have a second, fully operative computer system around than it is to have a separate cpu handy... I would think the opposite, because if you are buying a new cpu and a new motherboard, then the chances are good that your *old cpu* might be compatible with the new motherboard. At any rate, it is these kinds of questions the buyer is assumed to have the answers to by the motherboard manufacturers when he purchases a discrete motherboard--if you don't have the answers to these questions then you really don't even know what you're buying, right? Someone like that is not going to buy a discrete motherboard because chances are he won't have a clue as to how to install/use it--I think that is generally a logical assumption.
For instance--my motherboard is an MSI G46-970a with an AM3+ cpu socket. When I bought this (excellent) board a couple of years ago, it was to replace an older AM3+ motherboard which was running an Athlon II (it could have been a PhenomII, as well) so I knew when I ordered the board that if I needed to update the bios to support an FX-6300--which it turned out I did--I would need to boot initially with the AthlonII, download the latest bios from MSI, and then install the FX-6300. That's what I did and it went like clockwork because I already knew what I might have to do and was prepared when it came time to do it. Customers who buy discrete motherboards are expected to know certain things when they buy the boards else they risk buying/doing everything related to the motherboard erroneously. Sometimes, though, that's not all bad, because that's how people best amass information and knowledge that is worth having. Nothing beats hands-on.

Doing Internet research *before* buying a product is always highly advised. It's only an "elaborate reworking" when you do it the first time, because you don't know what to do and you have to learn your way through, step by step. I can guarantee that if you retain your lessons learned that you will not make the same mistake again, but you'll be fully prepared when buying your next motherboard/cpu.
Good luck... Computing is a lot of fun when you know which way is up--and I'll pass along a hint that has helped me enormously through the years...learn how things work as they work and not as you think you'd prefer them to work...! Some folks spend/waste an enormous amount of time/effort in trying to make their hardware and software do what they think it should do instead of simply learning how and why it does what it does. As you grow in experience you'll begin to get a glimmer of how & why things are done as they are done, and you'll come to understand that there are very good reasons most things work as they do.

Phone software improvements I would like to see

1. clock in main display not visible clearly. need a bolder font. even the analogue clock not easy to see. (motorola clock more clearly visible)
2. when reading sms messages, would be nice to have the date and time shown with the message, instead of having to hit 'msg details' key to see this information. as it is the msg details key also requires a bit of scrolling around to reach.

I agree with you that it is sometimes annoying having to enter into another menu to look at the message details. Although im also sure many would say they dont normally look at this because they know who is normally returning their text etc, unless they want to track when a text message was sent a while ago.

We are currently planning an upgrade to the ERP 2005s release that will include the new Tax and Revenue Management features. We have been using SAP FI-CA and SD for out tax processing for years and really look forward to finally getting a tax processing solution out of the box from SAP.

Excellent question! If our comments are in the wrong location, please provide a link to Apple's preferred location.
If Apple does not care about our needs, please say so. Although Aperture is currently IMO our best choice in the DSLR image management space, it certainly is not our only choice.
In any event, please provide an answer to the OP question "I cannot find the thread in the forum anymore, has it been deleted?"

ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 : What OBIEE Content Would You Like To See?

Hi All,
I'm one of the track chairs for the upcoming ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 conference, in Monterey USA next June. I'm interested in any thoughts any forum members would have on the OBIEE content you'd like to see at the conference, and to encourage forum members to submit abstracts for sessions you'd like to run.
In particular, this year, I'm interested in seeing if there is any interest in more advanced OBIEE features, given that the product has been out for a couple of years now and developers are getting pretty experienced with it. Is there any interest in sessions such as these?
- Performance tuning OBIEE queries (perhaps focusing on federated queries, or where aggregates are used?)
- Clustering, high availability
- Best practices around OBIEE data modeling (the common enterprise sematic layer)
- Experiences around bring OLAP data into the semantic model (perhaps from Essbase or MS AS, maybe in a hybrid arrangement with relational data)
- Integrating OBIEE with other applications (via web services, via GO URL etc)
- Informatica or ODI mappings in support of the BI Applications.

What features would you like to see in a Java Decompiler?

Hello all,
(I'm assuming if you're viewing this thread you use(d) a decompiler for development purposes).
I'm just about to embark on my final year dissertation for university and I am going to develop a Java decompiler.
I have researched existing decompilers, e.g. Mocha, DeJaVu etc and have come up with my own feature set, but I was wondering what other Java developers would like to see in a decompiler. e.g. Support for Generics (and other v.5 features)
So please let me know of anything you would like to see in a decompiler; possible IDEs to plug into, GUI, backwards compatibility, possible plugins, J2EE support, anything at all...

Support for DICOM SR, DICOM SEG, and Annotation and Image Markup (AIM) as output formats for the segmentation and reports would be helpful.
It would also be great to see support for native DICOM files as input rather than needing to convert to one of the other formats you currently accept.

How to get rid of: Would You Like To See Your Photos on a Map?

Every single time I edit a photo in Aperture I get this annoying question: "Would you like to see your photos on a map?" Enable GPS tracking - yes or no. How can I get this pop-up screen permanently off of Aperture? Sometimes this causes Aperture to freeze and I have to force quit my computer.

Just open iPhoto, open the iPhoto preference, then go to the advanced tab. At the bottom of the window is a pull down for "Look Up Place". The start up questions just asked how you want this setting set. You can now use the pull down to change it to "Automatic" instead of Never.
Another place to check in preference is the tab for "Web". There is a check box for "Include location information for published photos". This tells iPhoto if you want the location information included when you upload photos to Flickr or other places that can read and display map info.

You can middle-click or Ctrl left-click the Home button on the Navigation toolbar to open the Home page in a new tab.

What Would you like to see changed in FC?

just a little introduction, as announced flash catalyst would solve the problem of many designers to publish their work without one line of code, well, here begins a death foretold. At some point things to go well but then the problems begin a dependence to have a programmer on the left arm in addition to the program is rather limited. Flash is already incorporating the AS3 language, now wonder why launch a program with a new language, rather confusing, no? as a designer I do not want to worry about programming, but concentrate on the aesthetic aspect of my layout, which is why I found interesting the coming of the catalyst. it was all a lie, or say one more death will be announced shortly birth. but we believe that all this will change and enable designers to express their skills as designers and media .... without a single line of code. otherwise the flash is fine and the catalyst becomes an obsolete program. finally, each monkey on its branch and rethink that, besides confusing the catalyst does not become functional in the optical designer.
What would you like to see changed in Catalyst?
- Most states
- can apply Form Email etc
- better handling of text
- No dependence with programmers, or if it is not possible to incorporate code changes in the proper catalyst

I want to thank The Adobe team that created the opportunity to open new horizons to the class of designers, I still think that the catalyst has great potential ,.... but not the way it is.

Well the forms for sure. At least an email form. This really just needs to be there. Ultimatley I think there just needs to be some training right now if they want this product to get used the way they intended. I am sure I will have a ton more to add to this list as I dig deeper into my first live job using it.
Not sure on the AS3 thing, it has been out since 2006, although I may have just misread what you were saying.
A way to change the loading bar would definitly be nice now that I am thinking about it.
