Improving Boot Time on Compact Fieldpoint
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to improve the boot time of Compact Fieldpoint controllers? Right now, I've got some not real complex code with 2-3 Loops (lots of shared variables, though). It takes roughly 5-8 minutes for the loops to start running after the unit is powered on or rebooted. After they start running, the performance is OK but not great. I'm using a cfp-2020, but will be moving to a 2120 soon.
Thanks!
-Matt
I was also having problems on my cFP-2120 with the initial read on shared variables hosted on the cFP controller. I was working with only about a dozen shared variables and seemed to take several minutes before all the variables were up to speed. When I watched them on the variable manager, I could see them get their first values one at a time with about 5-8 seconds from one variable to the next. The FPremote.ini tip that I had seen in a few threads did seem to help. One comment I would add is that it didn't seem to take effect until after the controller was rebooted.
I would like to pose a few questions of an NI person as to why this file is needed? It isn't logical that the absence or presence of an empty file would have any effect on the speed of the shared variable engine. Are there any configuration settings that get added to it automatically? Are there any settings to be added that have any meaning to the shared variable engine? It appears to remain empty.
Has this behavior been documented as a bug within Labview or Fieldpoint? It seems that if something as simple as adding an empty file to a directory improves performance, a Fieldpoint patch or upgrade should be put in the drivers in the quarterly service CD's to take care of this automatically.
There should probably be a knowledgebase article on this in the official NI website rather than just the threads in the forums addressing this issue. I did a search for fpremote.ini from the NI home page and zero results came up.

Adding SSD to improve boot times
HP TouchSmart 1220UK, Windows 7 64-bit, 8GB RAM
Hi
I,m looking to improve the boot time on this machine (currently it's about 5 mins).
Is it possible to add an SSD ie. still retain my 1.5TB HD and have an SSD as well?
If this is possible, will it speed up my boot times?
Thanks in advance for any advice.Hello UKBigAL:
Welcome to Hp's forum. I know nothing about SSD. Time for you to do PC tune up and run your disk deframenter after you run HP Support Assistance tune up. You have to many start up programs running. Please type in Services in all programs search box. Open it when it appears go down the list and turn off the extra garbage programs that are not needed on start up like games alerts. Or you can use this program and it will fix every thing for you. Your computer will start up less then a minute. Total Defense PC tune up http://www.totaldefense.com/home-and-home-office/pc-tune-up.aspx My computer use to be slow like yours also open up Internet Explorer click on tool select Internet Options now put a check mark Delete browser history on exit then click advance tab above check mark Empty Temporary Internet file folder when browser is closed. This should fix your start up issue. -
Improve boot time on older mac running yosemite
Hi,
I've been upgrading to all OS X versions since the time i purchased my MBP back in 2008 without any hiccups whatsoever. Of late, after moving to Yosemite, have experienced otherwise leading to my reverting back to Mavericks twice.
As i wish to move forward and address the root cause of the problem have done bit of googling around and came across a post in the community stating that it'd be easier if i submitted my machine report to aide the proposition to my specific problem.
Please find below the report generated from running EtreCheck on my MBP:
Problem description:
Boot times on my mbp 2008 is reasonable slow

[solved] dhcpcd seriously slowing boot time, how to fix?
As the title says, dhcpcd is really the limiting factor in my boot process. Of the 4.125 seconds spent doing userland boot stuff, 2.95 are spent waiting for dhcpcd to finish loading so the network.target is reached and the last few things can continue loading. It might seem petty to complain about an 8 second boot, but I'm just trying to get it as quick as possible. What can I do to make it go faster? I've read through the wiki on improving boot times, dhcpcd, etc. and haven't found anything that has helped significantly. This is on a permanent ethernet connection, by the way.

Without ARP, it's under 200 milliseconds. This was a lucky run due to RFC mandated randomised startup delays (this is noted when you add --debug, I omitted this otherwise this post would be quite huge with other debug info)
But wait, we can go faster yet by ignoring these RFC mandated delays.

Lets go nuts and not bother running any scripts.
After all, DNS from DHCP is optional - a good local resolver will try DNS ROOT servers by default.
But screw fast DNS lookups, we want a fast boot!

palm, meet face! I was stupidly releasing the lease between runs. lets just clear the IP from the network stack to instead.

There are other ways of making dhcpcd go faster, but that involves hacking the code NOT to query the kernel for any existing IP addresses or routes so we don't break networking needlessly even for a every small window and other such things.
So at 15ms I think dhcpcd is pretty fast, and this is just profilng via the time shell command.
Of course, dhcpcd by default provides the most RFC compliant way of autoconfiguring your network address.
But of course, I leave the best trick until last. A well configured system with well written programs shouldn't need to forceably wait for the initial DHCP run to finish.

If you still believe dhcpcd to be slow, add the debug option and post some logs, ideally with timestamps and then we'll talk about making it go faster to meet your needs. -
Compact FieldPoint and Shared Variables
Hi Real-Time community,
let me first to describe my problem: I have a project running perfectly on Windows XP machine. The Real-Time Target (compact FieldPoint) is acquiring a data from different sensors and sends them via Shared Variables to the host machine (WinXP). Now this host application has to migrate to Windows 7 machine, which second Ethernet port is also connected to the compact FieldPoint's network. I have created an installer, it run on Win 7 computer but I I see no data there. Shared Variables are standart network-published. What else I need to configure to get Shared Variables visible over there? Thank you in advance for any helpful hint.
ArmenHi,
we do have the full edition of Signal Express, this is not the problem. We are already logging the information comming from our cFP-1808 : TC-120 and AI-111 module. The problem is that the AI-111 module is a 4 to 20mA module, and we have thermocouple connect to it. We want to read temperature in Signal Express instead of mA.
There's a option in MAX where you can add scaling to a cFP module. This scaling work in MAX, in the OPC server of the cFP, but not in Signal Express. In Signal Express, you still read the mA value.
I know we can add a formula in Signal Express, but we don't want to do that, when there is an other option in MAX.
Thanks -
[Solved]Long boot time (Userspace)
Hello everyone. I'm using Arch Linux x86_64 with LXDE. My spec is Celeron G1610 with normal HDD drive. I know it is not the SSD but can i improve boot time?
Systemd-analyze:
Startup finished in 2.780s (kernel) + 6.759s (userspace) = 9.539s
And blame:

Userspace is loading almost 7 seconds, is there any way to improve that ?? It is fresh install.

You can see how it compares to others https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=147841
Times like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1300124 are possible on SSDs.
When posting configs, code or command output, please use [ code ] tags, not [ quote ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

Which Distro has the fastest boot time?
As the title which Linux has the fastest boot time? Anything faster than 10 Sec is worth to mention.
However, I do want a few thing out of it. I would like some kind of GUI, Web browser, Music Player of some kind, and a good Text editor, along with some CLI software.
I am working on a project on my computer, which allow me dual boot directly from a CF card with a IDE to CF adapter or load it into my powerful OS(Arch Linux). For the most part, you just want to do a quick E mail check before you leave the house. And you don't want the computer on for like 8 hours sitting there doing nothing but waste energy. So I think it would be a good idea to do so. Due to the limitation of my case, I can only have one hard drive. And I don't want to use that one drive to dual boot my computer.
I am really looking in something that only need a few seconds.
hehe ThanksFaunos has a nice "live" OS that boots to KDE with archlinux packages (600) and can boot in ~60 secs. It operates in ram which gives it a speedy performance.
I have it booting from a Compact flash UDMA device in an Intel based computer using either an IDE to CF or a sata to cf adapter, each powered by the normal FDD five volt connector.
The UDMA CF cards reach 45MB/sec read speed. When booting with the CF cards into a "live" system, there are no writes until the user desires to "save session" to an overlay. To avoid writing to the boot device, an alternate device can be used via USB, for example, to retain the desired packages in a repo.
Faster ram will speed the boot process. Also, if one uses a repo device(another CF for example) much of the boot package load can be placed in that repo for install as needed. This could reduce the boot time considerably.
In my system, I have a repo built from 2 CF cards in raid0 with 15+GB capacity and utilize bookmarks for loading packages from the repo. This repo has 80+ mb/s speed.
Perhaps this is of interest to you....Cfast is coming which will improve the read/write speed while in sataII to a probable 160MB/sec for a single Cfast card.
EDIT: If you boot to CLI, the boot time is reduced and e-mail is available.

First world problem: exceptionally long boot time
no complaint, just wondering if boot-time can be improved. Any of you who might enjoy sifting through a system.log for what might account for ostensibly lengthening boot times, I give you my most recent log and thank you in advance.

Extremely slow boot time on fresh install (Cinnamon + GDM)
Hi,
I have a fresh installation of Arch with Cinnamon + GDM taking about 2 minutes and 30 seconds (observed manually) from Grub menu to loading of desktop in usable condition.
It's installed on external USB drive. Although the hardware is old but rebooted within 15 seconds in VM on internal HD drive with same Cinnamon and SDDM.
Details are:
#1. Hardware info:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ x 2
Memory 2.7 GB
Hard drive 149.4 GB
GPU : nVidia Corp; GT 218 [GeForce 210]
USB wi-fi card
Arch vanilla kernel: 3.17.2-1
Problems:
a) Delay during loading of kernel modules,
b) Extreme delay in loading of display manager for login, and
c) Delay in loading of desktop.
I followed these guides:
Maximizing performance
Improve boot performance
Did not find any relevant tip to fix problems.
#2. systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 16.354s (kernel) + 10.182s (userspace) = 26.536s

#5. Important observation:
hdparm -t reports 13.54 mb /sec reads for the external drive I am using for this installation. I don't face lag or slowness after boot including another distro installed on this drive had this problem.
Please help in further analyzing and fixing this problem.
Thanks! How fast does it boot to a tty? Disable gdm and boot to a tty. See if that is any faster than starting gdm. Gdm takes a while to start up if I run it on my computer and I have an SSD. But it will add several seconds to my boot time which from systemd-analyze is 9 seconds.
So, boot to a tty and use startx to start the session and see if it's any faster. 13MB/s seems like a pretty tight bottleneck for starting big applications like gdm and a desktop environment. I run a pretty simple openbox setup as my environment and it only uses 150 MB of memory after I startx. But if I could only load 13 MB /s from memory it would add another 11 seconds to the time it took me to startx.

i finally managed to get max to see the devices of my cfp2200.
(i had to disable every unused networkadapter due to overlapping subnets)
now i want to deploy the example programm "Compact FieldPoint Embedded Data Logger Example Program"
http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/3221
i therefor have tried to install the runtime 8.5 on the target. however this is not possble, because i have labview 2010 installed and it gives the message:
"the host has a newer version available"
ok. runtime 2010 should work to - not?
i open a new project - import my *.iak-file and drag-n-drop the content of "cfp_data_logger_source.zip" onto the target.
now if i open the file cFPEmbeddedDataLogger.vi the run-button is cracked and by pressing it an errorlist opens.
the errors say stuff like:
target does not support this function/subvi
and
vi has been modified with a different applicationinstance
please help me to make this work.
i know that it is possible to get the programm to run on the cfp2200 even dough it is primaly designed for the cFP-2000, cFP-2010, cFP-2020, cFP-2100, cFP-2110,
cFP-2120.
big THANX already for you help !!!!!Hi, thanks for your help=) I've manage to drag the file into my targeted controller. I am now doing the setting of the data logger program, but there's one thing I'm unsure of. May I know what does it mean by the cFP controller clock? http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3219 . Thanks. =)
Log On Startup
Start logging when the controller powers up.
Start Log Time
The time to start logging.
Stop Log Time
The time to stop logging.
Note: Make sure the clock is set correctly on the controller. The settings described above refer to the cFP controller clock.
Log Rate
The number of milliseconds to wait between each acquisition.
FP Drive For Data Files
The drive to store the log files in. The C: drive is the default for all cFP controllers. If you want to save to the removable CompactFlash drive on the cFP controller, select the D: drive.
Digital "Pause" Line
The Digital Input item to use as a "pause" button for data logging. Logging pauses when the signal is high. When the signal goes low again, a new file is created and logging continues if appropriate.
Note: Use only Digital Input items for the Digital "Pause" Line.
Tip: You can use DIP Switch 3 to block the current data from being logged. This switch works the same way as the Digital "Pause" line.
Logging Session Tag
Is stamped on the spreadsheet that the data logger creates. -
Hi Gang,
OK, I have been sick for sixteen years, about as long as the Target hacker has been alive. I will be 67 in a few weeks. My PC tells me it cannot load SuperFetch at boot time. What did I clobber? I saved the message as offered.
Thanks,
Al MarcyHi,
Could you please post the complete event log
here? Was this error message related with superfetch service? The error message here seems to be mostly associated with .Net framework.
Few more questions here, what actions had been taken before the error occurred? Have you checked if any viruses attacked? In addition, please take a try with system file checker.(More infor
for SFC).
Regarding SuperFetch, it caches data to RAM so that it can be immediately available to your application. Sometimes this can affect the performance of certain applications. It tends to not work
well with gaming, but can improve performance with business apps. And this service is dependent on the following system components:
File Information FS MiniFilter
FltMgr
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
DCOM Server Process Launcher
RPC Endpoint Mapper
More information, please check
superfetch in:
Threats and Countermeasures Guide: System Services
To see if superfetch is disabled or not, please check the steps below:
1. Click the Start orb and type Regedit in the Start Search area.
2. Open the Registry Editor.
3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
then SYSTEM
then CurrentControlSet
then Control
then Session Manager
then MemoryManagement
then click PrefetchParameters
4. On the right side, double-click on EnableSuperfetch
5. Check the value of it, it is set to
3 by default on win7:
Values:
0 to disable Superfetch
1 to enable prefetching when program is launched
2 to enable boot prefetching
3 to enable prefectching of everything
Hit OK then Close RegEdit. "
Then goto the services MSC ("windows key + r" or just "windows key" and type
services.msc). Scroll down to Superfetch and now should start. Double click it and change to automatic, then attempt to start again.
If we fail to start this service, I suggest we
export following keys from the computer on Which Windows 7 works fine, and then import to your computer to repair this service. On the good win7 PC:
Navigate to :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\SysMain
Right click on the
SysMain, choose export, and then move the export file on the problematic PC, double click the file.
Hope this helps,
Best regards
Michael

DSC for compact fieldpoint(cFP)
which IO server type should be used for building DSC application for compact fieldpoint target?
when i use my computer as target then i get various options for IO server type like custom VI,opc client, epics, data set marker, modbus. But when i choose compact fieldpoint as target i got only epics and modbus options. Is there any problem with my HW/SW or with my concept?
kindly clearify.....

vksHi,
if you just wanna use Labview for logging and graphics (using Ethernet) AND you do NOT use a Real-Time cFP-Controller then you do not need Labview Real Time.
E.g. if you use NI cFP-1804 - Ethernet/Serial Interface for Compact FieldPoint.
If you are using a Real Time Controller than you will NEED Labview Real-Time.
You cannot work without it!!!
Best regards

MacPro has recently become slow (5+ hour boot times!)
Hi all,
Let me say in advance that I very much appreciate all patience and assistance with my problem. I'm the kind of guy who's never run Terminal, so that's what you're dealing with.
In the past few weeks I've had some booting problems where the grey startup screen has shown a spinning wheel for a bit longer than normal. Once logged in, some tasks take unusually long to accomplish (stuttering video, loading a normal amount of files in an opened folder, launching an application, copying and pasting, etc).
This past week I couldn't boot at all and I tried to boot in safe mode with no avail. But then I booted up and left it on overnight -- in the morning I was in! Then when I rebooted to see if the problem was a temporary one, the boot time was several hours.
Some info about my Pro: it has 4 internal 1TB drives, none of which have fewer than 70-400GB of free space. The boot drive (1) mirrors to drive 2, and the other drive (3) mirrors to drive 4 (so, 2 drives, 2 internal backups). I also have my data backed up on BackBlaze, but I'd rather not lose all of my software and configurations from years of work by doing a clean install. I have pulled all drives but the boot drive and have swapped the boot drive to its mirror -- all with the same results. Does this mean it's hardware? It has NO third party hardware (maybe a graphics card to allow me to have a second screen, but I can't remember if I ordered it that way). It has NO peripherals other than speakers and a wireless keyboard/mouse that I've had for 6 years. My desktop is clean.
I've read a lot of solutions, but haven't tried all of them yet because the computer is so slow that it might take weeks to try a handful. I also fear rebooting, since I'm not sure it will start again.
Here is some info from EtreCheck which I've seen requested in similar threads. There's a worrying amount of red.
And I apologize in advance, but if you say "Uninstall xxx" please let me know how.

I'll wait for a response before rebooting or trying DiskUtility.
Thank you!!!For starters, replace the 2600.
Replace the boot drive ( Matt's Bootdisc 1 (disk0s2) /: 999.35 GB (67.91 GB free)
Never let boot drive get more than 60% full.
You will see huge improvement replacing it with 250GB $160 Samsung 840 SSD
Forget mirror if you are doing that and just clone the system as needed
Use 2TB media and data drive (Seagate Constellation) - if you can get by with 1TB and save fine.
Backups should be two or more and some exsternal and offline. Clone and TimeMachine is a good combination.
Do a clean system install on your new boot drive.
Don't reinstall any 3rd party, and leave Intego out. If you must, then setup a small special "system maintenance" drive with the "system tools" but AV just adversely affect performance and have no place in production system on a Mac.
A bad sector on a disk drive in some areas cannot be mapped out or fixed wtihout a full disk erase.
Redownload 10.8.5 only before and instead of running the installer (and here install onto another drive!) first make a bootable flash drive installer and keep it around.
Instead of using DVDs which I never do even 8 yrs ago plus, just clone or install a small 30GB or less 'emergency maintenance system' partition on one of your drive partitions (even on TimeMachine drive which should be around 2-3TB or more).
If you want to mirror instead of using Carbon Copy Cloner, take a look at the demo from www.SoftRAID.com instead.
Add USB3 Sonnet Alllegro for your external drives - excellent fast performance and reliable.
For fast scratch disks and editing or for graphic catalogues and libraries, a couple SSD drives mounted on Sonnettech.com Sonnet Tempo Pro PCIe ($300) can be found on Amazon and OWC www.macsales.com

I'm speccing out a Fieldpoint system, and although Compact Fieldpoint has many features that make it superior to Fieldpoint for my application, I'm wondering why no relay modules seem to be available for it.
The cFP-RLY-420 is referenced in the manual it shares with the FP-RLY-420, and a search in the product section comes up with several pages that aren't viewable, but it doesn't seem to be currently available.
More importantly, if there are no relay modules available at this time, what would be the alternatives for switching? A small Opto22 backplane wired to a DO module perhaps?Mako,
Several of the more specialized modules in FieldPoint have not yet been released in Compact FieldPoint. However, National Instruments is presently working on releasing most of these traditional FieldPoint module in the future.
Depending on your application, either the cFP-DO-401 or cFP-DO-410 (which are both providing sourcing outputs) may be a possible alternative. The DO-401 module can sustain up to 2 A per channel, 8 A squared per module whereas the DO-410 can sustain up to 1 A per channel. Please note that these modules only handle low voltage DC.

Can someone please Interpret this EtreCheck for me? Macbook Pro Boot Time Really Slow.
Can someone please give me detailed instruction on what to do no next. I've read several forum discussion on this subject and seen various examples. i would like help with mine. Reason being is because my MBP boot up time is almost around 2-3mins long sometimes it can even be upto 5mins. reason i ask is because i know this is not normal. compared to my macbook (mid-2010) this is REALLY slow. And all the specs of my MBP should in theory make my MB a thing of the past. (Why i bought the MBP in the first place). i've done PRAM reset and booted in Safe Mode. i've removed several applications using the correct uninstalls where required.
i have ran a terminal commands to clear the kernal caches and got these results (not sure if it will help). And neither have made a difference.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutesafter the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
