Improving Discussions - Topics other than "Products"

While I realize one of the main functions of Apple Discussions is support of products, I would like to suggest that Discussions topics be extended to include other options.
For instance, Apple operates in many countries, but there is little way for Apple headquarters to get feedback on the satisfaction of customers or other issues in these countries because they are often not included here in the discussions. Could we have a category of Discussions that include each country?
Currently, there are discrimination issues against foreigners in Korea by both Apple and KT (the mobile operator selling iPhone in Korea). However, there is little access or pathways for foreigners to express these concerns and frustrations with Apple. KT and Apple excluded foreigners in the pre-orders for the phone, foreigners were excluded from the iPhone Launch Party hosted at the Olympic Stadium, and foreigners are not able to receive the same discounts that Korean are able to get. At this point, foreigners are even being told that they cannot own an iPhone in Korea. There is much discussion about this on blog and twitter, but it is not evident to Apple Korea or Apple headquarters. Thus, could there be an "Apple Korea" discussion?
Additionally, Discussions could be expanded to include other issues such as Apple's responsibility to the environment or their recycling program. These would be very useful.
As we all know, people are passionate about their Apple products and want to communicate with Apple about the products, how they are using and the service they receive. I am suggesting that Apple could expand these forums to hear from Apple customers.
Sincerely,
@Krea_frobro747

If you are in Korea, you may want to contact KT directly as well. They may have certain provisions of Apple's contract needs that they are unhappy with that they aren't letting the reviewers know about.
Apple has a http://www.apple.com/environment page.
This forum of http://discussions.apple.com/ is purely technical support from the end of the product. Not the company end, and for users to help users. Terms of Use on the right are very particular about that:

  • Inserting Title variable that refers to topic other than where variable resides

    Still using RH9, but I think RH10 is going into our upcoming budget. I understand the Title variable in the Fields and Variables dialog refers to the title of the topic in which you are placing the variable. However, I would like to use a topic title reference in another topic, because it is likely the title will change and I only want to change it in one place and have it reflected automatically.
    Here are two inadequate solutions I would reject:
    Dragging the topic name from the Project Manager and then changing the title of the referred topic: it does not change the reference text.
    Making a user defined variable: seems counterproductive because I will still be making one change too many.
    Example: I have a topic called VIP PO Approval that is referring to the VIP PO Upload/Entry topic. I am putting hyperlinks from the Approval topic to the Upload/Entry topic, but the text of the links should come from the "Upload/Entry" Topic Title field. If the powers that be change the spelling of Upload/Entry (perhaps include spaces around the slash), I only want to change it in the properties of that topic or rename it in Project Manager (the point is, in one place only).
    Does anyone know how to do this in RH9? Is there an enhancement in RH10?
    Thank you.

    I would add to Peter's response by saying this: When you drag and drop to create a link, what the link actually reads is dependent upon how you created the link. For example, if you select the text used to constitute the link, THEN drag to the selected text, the selected text is used instead of the Topic title. And sure, if you just drag the topic to an empty spot on the page, the Topic Title is used.
    Sure, it seems like an extra step is involved, but with RoboHelp 10, I defined a variable and used the variable as my topic title. I then dragged the variable to the selected text to create the variable. Then I dragged the desired topic to the variable to create the link. All seemed to work just fine with the link text updating when the variable was changed
    I think  any way you slice it you are going to have at least one extra step. But then again, anything that gives you more functionality tends to require an extra hoop or two, no? And on the up side, while an extra step is inovolved initially, you actually SAVE steps down the road. So overall, I'd say you are still in the benefit zone.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Why is the Adobe Application Manager in a language other than English?

    I'm not sure if I accidently chose the wrong option when setting up my account, but the Adobe Application Manager seems to have all the text (other than product names) in what I think is German, not English. Is there a way to fix that for future downloads if needed?
    Everything else seems to be working fine though.
    Gracias.

    Thanks!
    Unfortunately, there are no prefs to change. (At least not in the usual spot where Preferences are supposed to be on a Mac running Snow Leopard…)

  • SAP F&R:: Forecasting at any level other than LOCATION/ PRODUCT- LOCATION

    Hi, I am trying to check if F&R has the capability to let me plan the forecasting process at any level other than Location-Product.
    For example, I wish to execute a WEEKLY FORECAST only at the MERCHANDISE CATEGORY level, for all products defined under that MERCHANDISE CATEGORY. Is it possible to execute the forecast process this way? Please throw some light.
    Thanks!
    Vismay!

    Hi Vismay,
    you could use the mass_maintenance for location products and assign the forecast frequenca profile to all location products of a certain merchandise category (use merchandise category as selection).
    Alternative could be (if you are interested to do the forecast calculation once a week): You can create a new forecast frequency profile with the appropriate settings (weekly forecast; weekday the calculation has to be done; recurrency = 1). Define this new profile as the default profile!
    Best regards,
    Uli

    There is a huge difference between sending email and sending messages.
    Yes, I believe you when you say you can only send messages to other Apple products.  The iPad is not a telephone, and therefore, it cannot text message.  It can only iMessage, which means it can send and receive messages to/from other Apple products if they are on WiFi or an iMessage capable cellular network.
    Email, however, is a whole different category.  I don't really think you can only exchange email with other Apple products only.  Make sure you have correctly identified the symptoms.

    Can't decide between the iphone or ipad as my first apple product. Is there a difference other than phone and size?

    A couple of differences:
    iPad native apps
    Interactive e-books with multi-touch and 3D support (in iBooks 2)
    Layouts (kind of merges with iPad apps, Music/Settings, etc. all look different)
    Wi-Fi only models, no contracts
    iPads are unlocked by default (3G models)

    I have Airport Extreme as the base unit and an Express unit in a room separated by a brick wall to improve signal. Express shows a green light indicating signal but my iPad does not perform well. How can I improve other than hardwire ethernet connection?

    Other suggestions, and more info about the nature of the problem, may be in this Apple tech note.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
    For example, you might find that the brick wall is not the only problem. There may be other devices pumping out enough wireless interference to be making things even worse.
    I agree with Bob Timmons that Ethernet is best and most reliable. And that powerline (which I use) is easier and potentially faster than wireless...but only if your power lines do not have electrical devices plugged in which produce electrical noise on the line. Powerline will be slower than Gigabit Ethernet.
    Ethernet cable is the only way to ensure that the signal goes directly there in a shielded way for a clear fast signal. Wireless and powerline are much slower because of all the other things the signal has to fight past to get to the other device.

  • There is a hum when I hook up my IPod touch with the stereo system.  If I do not use the docking station there is no hum.  Is there a solution other than buying a new docking station.  The on I own is 5 years old and is an apple product.

    I have an Ipod touch with a genuine Apple docking station.  Lately when I connect my system to my home stereo, there is a hum that I never noticed before.  When I connect the system directly to my stereo, there is no hum.  Is there a solution, other than buying a new docking station?

    This makes sense to me. I think the issue is your misunderstanding. If you purchased an item, your Apple ID becomes tied to that permanently. So when you try to update that app, you need the password to the ID that 'OWNS' that application.
    Also, I suspect you have a different ID signed into the device, which is why you can't buy with your own. That article listed shows how to change the signed in account.

  • Samples fall under a different category than production systems

    hi
    in http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/november2011-otn-harvest-1389769.pdf
    section "How to detect browser type and version from ADF Faces" (p. 22)
    Frank Nimphius writes
    "Ps.: I can almost hear John Stegeman, the Oracle ADF community expert I introduce in this month's OTN Harvest Spotlight, saying that System.out.println is not what I should be using, but AdfLogger. And right he is – however, samples fall under a different category than production systems. "
    Agreed, samples fall under a different category than production systems.
    But, sometimes I wonder if it justified for samples to be (much) different from a production system.
    First, there is not always such an explicit disclaimer on samples, to point out where significant differences are with a production system.
    Sure, that is where your own skills and experience come into play, but not everyone always recognizes all aspects that should be different for a production system.
    Second, why is it too much to bother to use an approach in a sample that can be in a production system?
    Could this be related to the complexity of the context (tools/framework/product) the sample is being created in? If so, maybe that context should improve.
    Sometimes, the simplicity of a solution a sample is intended to demonstrate, is lost when it is implemented in a production system.
    Maybe it is good practice when writing a sample, to ask the question : What should be different for a production system?
    Although, I currently don't have any good examples of such a "sample gap ", maybe I will update this forum thread if I bump into one.
    Any comments or examples are welcome.
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    Thanks for the replies John and Timo.

    My idea was (and is) to be lenient on the System.out.println() example, because I would consider this a minor "sample gap".
    But, you are probably right (if you can find the discipline).

    edit : I am not saying that System.out.println() statements should end up in a production system.

  • Experiences on JPA persistence providers other than standard SAP's

    Hi developers,
    in this thread I would like to gather experiences from all those who have tried using JPA persistence providers other than SAP standard implementation in productive environments
    It would be very interesting if you could share you experiences, for instance with regards to:
    - advantages of a specific implementation
    - disadvantages (if any)
    - new features available (e.g. Lazy support for Lob and single-value relationships)
    - ease of transport (did you manage to somehow use the java dictionary DCs or what?)
    - ease of build (e.g. EclipseLink requires additional build plugins to be developed)
    - ease of overall setup: how long did it take to set the DI stuff up (SLD SC creation/track creation/check-in/check-out/activate/transport/...)?
    thank you so much for sharing your experiences.
    Regards
    Vincenzo

    Hi Vincenco,
    yes, semantic IDs do not have a place in JPA. Semantic keys are needed, but not as IDs.
    Both SAP JPA and EclipseLink use @GenerationType.TABLE generation if you define @GenerationType.AUTO. ("AUTO" just means that the persistence provider "should pick an appropriate strategy for the particular database" (javadoc)
    Both TABLE and SEQUENCE are somewhat automatic.
    I guess the fact of lost-values is because the fetching of IDs is done in another transaction (probably for performance reasons, not to have the sequence table as a bottle neck).
    On Oracle, the combination of allocationSize on JPA side and INCREMENT BY / CACHE on Database side is as follows: allocationSize must be equal to INCREMENT BY, but JPA uses the intermediate numbers (which is not the case in normal (PL)SQL programming. There is no annotation-JPA-pendant to CACHE. But that JPA uses the intermediate numbers from memory may be considered as a JPA way of sequence caching (that may be further improved by Sequence CACHE for really big mass insers in one transaction).
    CACHE>1 will give you lost values even with allocationSize = Increment BY = 1.
    On the other hand, allocationSize=1 may give bad performance on mass inserts because the JPA provider must ask the database for every instance. allocationSize>1 (e.g. 20) is better but will again yield lost values. (But who cares with "long"?)
    There is one important issue with both automated value creation strategies - GeneratorType.TABLE and GeneratorType.SEQUENCE: The ID cannot be set by yourself on instantiation of an Entity object. JPA spec defines that the ID is set at the latest on EntityManager.flush or EntityManager.commit, which is sometimes too late if you have container managed transaction boundaries.
    But both SAP JPA and EclipseLink assure that the ID with Table and Sequence is set already after call EntityManager.persist(newObject). This improves a lot, but may be not enough.
    Example:
    @Entity(name="T_ORDER")
    public class Order {
         @OneToMany(targetEntity=OrderItem.class, mappedBy="order", cascade=CascadeType.ALL)
         private List<OrderItem> items = new ArrayList<OrderItem>();
         public void addItem (OrderItem item) {
              this.items.add(item);
              item.setOrder(this);
    @Entity(name="T_ORDERITEM")
    public class OrderItem {
         @ManyToOne(targetEntity = Order.class)
         private Order order;
    EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager();
    em.getTransaction().begin();
    Order o = new Order();
    OrderItem i1 = new OrderItem();
    o.addItem(i1);
    em.persist(o);
    OrderItem i2 = new OrderItem();
    o.addItem(i2);
    At the end of this snippet, o and i1 have ID != null but i2 has ID==null. there is no way to "auto-persist" an object which gets into a relation to an already persisted object. i2 gets an ID!= null after flush or commit.
    This may be tricky if your business logic that adds items is "pojo" without acces to EntityManager or if you do not want to mess up your business logic with flushes.
    How to "broadcast" the  unique IDs of just inserted order items to the User Interface if they are not yet set in the last line of your SLSB?
    We switched to simple UUIDs that are generated on instanciation. long VARCHAR2s, but it works fine and is very common.

  • OPM support for Word Processors and Spreadsheet Programs other than Microsoft

    Hi,  the Productivity Suite requirements for OPM seem to be Microsoft Word and Excel.
    However, that ties users in to Microsoft products and microsoft appear to be moving down the "Adobe" rent a program scheme with Office 365.  This is an issue for me - reasons which are not relevant to this discussion - and I am now actively seeking alternatives to Microsoft Word and Excel.
    As Oracle bought Sun Microsystems, who themselves acquired StarOffice which supported OpenOffice.org, is there any intention for Oracle to make OPM versions which can use office suites other than Microsoft products?
    If yes, which other office productivity suites are being considered and what is the timescale for the delivery of an OPM release which supports these other office suites please.
    If no, are Oracle concerned that their market is tied in to a product which they have no control over?
    Thanks

    What I was really after was someone from the OPM development team to answer these questions - for me, OPM being tied in to Microsoft products forces me to have to buy / rent Microsoft Office products which is increasingly becoming too restrictive and costly for my business model.
    I'd be interested to hear if Oracles approach is simply
    1. "take it or leave it" either because OPM is too integrated with Word and Excel coding eg parsing, compiling etc for Oracle to unpick how OPM works or
    2. if Oracle believe if you can afford OPM, you should be able to afford Microsoft products too or
    3. Oracle are currently actively developing OPM versions which function with other productivity suites
    Unfortunately, developers are the last people that can comment on these questions. The binding of OPA to Microsoft office is a product decision, not one limited by technology. We can't comment on future directions for the product. A product manager, or marketing are the sort of people that could comment on these sorts of issues.
