Improving live instr. recording

I am a serious amateur French Horn player. Am using a Snowball USB mic. Having trouble recording without distortion: present on headphones, worse via Soundsticks. What microphones might improve this? I am totally new to recording (classical geek, ya know), so need advice about the whole set-up (adaptors, "mixers", cables, etc.).
Budget wise, I'd be willing to consider set-up costs up to $1000 if that's what it would take, but I don't even know where to start.....
Also, any speaker sets you'd recommend for this use?
Thanks

First of all I commend you for even playing the French Horn. A difficult instrument to master.
As you may well notice as you embark on researching options for quality recording, there are many opinions and many options available.
If you wish to upgrade your signal path I would definitely recommend taking some time and researching what's available within your budget. And checking into various forums for recording. As there are a multitude of options and they can and will impact your final product; the recording.
As you may know the Snowball is 16bit 44.1KHz. As is GB. If critical you may want to record at better resolutions then either will provide.
I would not personally recommend an SM57 for a French horn.
Of course fidelity can be subjective. It may suit your needs just fine.
And it's true an SM57 is virtually in every studio and is a veritable standard mic to own. It is a great mic. But is it the right tool for your needs?
If you need a good mic for a French horn application I would look at large diaphragm condensers.
And while the Inspire has a great price point for a little more you can find interface's with audibly noticeable better sonic's.
Speakers again, very subjective. Plus budget.
I would be hard put to find a interface, a decent mic and monitors for a grand. And as you can see another will think that is more then you would need.
In my viewpoint $400.00 for a decent mid priced interface and mic equals $800.00. Just enough left for some headphones.
And then save up for some good monitors.
However, having said that.
I would as suggested try working with what you have to see if you can find sufficent improvement first.
As distortion can occur with the best gear and may well mean you are recording too hot. Or something is faulty. Tried tracking at lower levels?
By the way where are you placing the Snowball? Do you record for reflections also or do you have the mic very close to the bell?

I upgraded to the presonus inspire interface and audio technica at 3032 condensor omnidirectional mic (got talked into the mic by the salespeople). It is a BIG improvement over the Blue Bell USB mic. The sound is markedly less distorted with a smoother more velvety quality. Thanks to all for their help. Hangtime, I was about to get both pieces you recommended, but can't say this mic is "better" than what you advised.
I don't want to go too far off topic, but Cubase LE, the packaged production software that came with the interface, has a similar feel to GB. A little more complicated to get started, but no big deal. It's equalizer is more flexible than GB's. It allows infinite adjustment at 4 chosen frequencies instead of GB's preset ones. Helps me to generate a more realistic product

GB has a graphic equalizer with 10 or 31 bands, and it has a parametric EQ. They're both in the pulldown menu under the AU effects. However, it doesn't have that neat 4-fold parametric EQ that Cubase offers.

  • Adobe Flash tried to play a live or recorded stream that does not exist. Source can't be found

NOTE: This thread was started in the flash pro forum: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/898879?tstart=0 . However, because of adninjastrators recommandation, I open the thread here:
    Hello there,
I have started a stream from Flash media encoder to flash media server. According to my encoder, it should be located at: "rtmp://localhost/live" and is called livestream.
In the Flash  software I try and set the source of FLVPlayback component to "rtmp://localhost/live/livestream", and I get this error: "NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound : Adobe Flash tried to play a live or recorded stream that does not exist. Source can't be found.". Both the server and encoder is runnind and I am encoding.
Too, when I try and open the html with the stream in a browser, nothing appears.
    What should I check?
    Thanks.
    Kind regards,
    Marius

    Thanks for your reply.
Server, encoder and player are all on the same computer.
Admin console confirms the existence of "livestream" of type "Live" and a "NetStream" called "ABAF". No idea what the latter is.
Also, thought I'd mention that I have to start the servers from the Control Panel -> administrative tools -> services. If I try and start the server from the start menu, they dont start.
    Thank you for your time.
    Kind regards,
    Marius

So just to clarify, the server is installed on the same machine that you are using to do the encoding, correct?
And you are using Flash Media Live Encoder to do the encoding?
I don't have Flash CS5 for I'm not sure what is in there to do the encoding.. but more on FMLE here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/
There are two step used to get the encoding going with FMLE...
    1. after setting all the config settings, click the "Connect" button. Then open the encoding log and you will be able to see if connection was made to the server or not. Can you successfully connect to the server? if not, what is the error message?
    2. click the "Start" button and in the encoding log, you will see that the audio and video encoding has started. What does the encoding log say?

  • Please check the LIVE CHAT Record and return my money back.

    This is the situation.
My 2-year contract ended on 1-15-2015, and I ordered a new device iphone 6 plus (64G) on 1-13-2015 and selected Edge plan (I line, 1GB data, unlimited call and message from 1-15-2015, totally price $80/ month). I had a live chat with a lady and a man, and also confirmed it with call.
Now I found that the bill became $183 !!!  6GB data is stead of 1GB. The stupid thing is that I paid the same amount ($183) last month as I thought first month charged more because of handing fee.... Now this month It also 183. So I contact with LIVE chat person and ask them to check the LIVE CHAT record to compensate the losses. They told me that they can't enter the record and can't make this remedy.
So, why do I need take resposible for this mistake? Why do I need pay $200 more? Why can't your guys see the record and find the evidences? Actually I only use 20% data of 1GB, why you HELP me order 6GB?

  • Streaming Live and Recording at the same time

Currently I allow users to stream live Audio and Video and I would like to begin recording the Audio/Video at the same time.
The only way I can figure out streaming Live and Recording is to create two NetStreams and connect with the same NetConnection and have one netstream publish "live" and the other netstream publish "record". This just doesn't seem very efficient because it would be streaming the same thing twice to the FMS.
Is this the only way to go about this? or am I going the wrong way with this?

What you want to do is record to FMS.  Then use NetStream.Play(filename, -1) to only play live.

The class java.util.Date is not itself deprecated, however several of its methods are.
For converting string -> date, you should use the class java.text.SimpleDateFormat. That allows you to specify format strings such as MM-dd-yyyy hh:mm:ss for converting date -> string -> date.
If you are wanting to set day/month/year on the date object directly, instead of the Date methods setDay, setMonth, setYear, you should instead use the java.util.Calender class:
    calendar.set(Calendar.MONTH, 4);
The calendar can then be converted to a Date object by calling calendar.getTime().
If you are going to use the date as part of a sql query, I would recommend using a Prepared statement, and the java.sql.Date/java.sql.Timestamp class as well.
To convert from java.util.Date to java.sql.Date)
    jva.util.Date utilDate = Calendar.getInstance().getTime();
    java.sql.Date sqlDate = new java.sql.Date(utilDate.getTime());cheers,

    Hello,
I'm looking into a Muse Receptor for my live performances. I haven't bought it yet (waiting for a bit more cash and some feedback), but I'm mostly likely going to get it by September. According to some it is a must for live occasions.
I've put up a post asking anybody's experience with the machine. Look into it. It is a fair investment.

  • Best upgrade for mini to improve live broadcast streaming?

I am using a Mac Mini for live broadcast streaming. I am using Wirecast for the encoding. I am encoding the stream in Flash format and I'm simultaneously recording to hard drive in QT h.264 format. This maxes out my 2 GHz Core 2 Duo mini with 4GB RAM. I am trying to decide how I might improve my setup for optimal performance. For example:
    1) Should I replace the 5400 RPM internal hard drive in the Mini with a 7200 RPM drive and continue to run the broadcasting and recording as before but now with the faster drive? In other words, would I expect meaningful gain by simply upgrading to a faster internal drive?
    Or:
    2) Should I add an external 7200 RPM 800 Firewire HD to the Mini? If I do this what would be the best way to utilize the faster drive--
    a) Booting the mini from the faster external drive and recording to the external drive and essentially "ignore" the internal drive?
    b) Boot from the internal drive and use the external drive for recording the movies?
And would utilizing the single FW 800 port for the HD interfere with capturing video from my FW camcorder? (I'd need to add a FW hub or daisy chain the two devices).
I guess what I am really asking is this-- Will I have better efficiency in performing simultaneous encoding and recording by off-loading part of the work to a second hard drive?
I assume that the encoding of the broadcast stream is determined by the CPU and is independent of the hard drive configuration.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    John

I admit that I'm not familiar with your particular application and setup, but I will say that the fastest connection to the hard drive in the Mini is via the internal SATA. A 7200 RPM 2.5" drive should be faster than a firewire external.
Keep in mind that drives slow down as they get closer to full .. so for best performance try to keep as much free space as possible. A drive that is 50% full will be a lot faster than one that is 80-90% full.
It might be useful to look at Utilities > Activity Monitor and see whether you are having a high pageout-to-pagein ratio, or whether you are strictly CPU or I/O bound.
BTW to take advantage of the fast SATA connection, some folks have run eSata from inside their Minis to allow connection of 3.5" eSata drives, which would be the fastest conventional drive for a Mini.
Others have replaced the DVD drive with a Solid-State Disk Drive, for the absolute fastest (though size limited) setup.

  • How to check whether a stream a live or recorded video in FMS?

I don't find such API to indicate whether a stream is live or not.
Anyone knows how to judge this, either by client side or server side actionscript?

According to the definition of stream.time, I don't think we can distinguish a live stream from a recorded stream by that.
    Stream.time
    myStream.time
Read-only; the number of seconds the stream has been playing. This value is the timestamp of the latest frame that flowed out of the stream.
That said,in both cases,myStream.time will keep increasing.

  • Can Wireless Live! record to USB thumb drive?

If I were to get a USB portable thumb drive (8MB) and plug it into the Live! server could I have it record video when motion is detected? That would be a great feature since I wouldn't have to turn my home computer on while on vacation and it would allow me to access the files remotely.
Another question, if I were to change the camera to one that had a microphone as well as video, would the audio be recorded? Could I hear the audio while remotely monitoring the camera?

    Michael Levin wrote:
...I rebooted just in case, and it showed me a login screen again but also a message saying that the boot volume (the thumbdrive) is full. What did it fill it with? Since it's possible to boot off a DVD, I guess it doesn't really need to write to the boot volume, right? What am I doing wrong?
When you boot from the internal, start Disk Utility and mount the USB drive, what does it say about available space?
FWIW, I did the same thing in order to use DiskWarrior on a rMBP and what's on the USB drive is just a standard, bootable installation of Mountain Lion plus DiskWarrior. Disk Utility tells me that I have 7.43 GB free but that's because I used a 32 GB flash drive, not a 16 GB. Most of the time, if you're booting off a DVD, it's an installer, not a fully functioning install; DiskWarrior used to provide a bootable DVD but the last one was OS 10.4. I'm surprised you could fit a full ML install on 16 GB. I could fit Snow Leopard on a 16 GB flash drive, but not ML.
And yes, since the OS thinks it's simply a standard installation (which it is), it does have to be able to write to the boot drive. Also, the installer customizes the installation for the Mac it's being installed on. If the other machine you used to install ML on the flash drive is a different kind of Mac, you may run into compatibility problems.

  • LIVE BAND RECORDING

I finally figured out how to use my Alesis Firewire 12 Mixer, designating 8 tracks to record my live band. After configuring each track, recordings came out very well. I record our rehearsals many songs at a time, pausing between each song. On the saved tracks, I can see where the pauses are, but how can I edit just one song at a time instead of the entire recording? Then, how do I mix those tracks and that segment (or song) down to the master track? HELP!
There's no way I want to reconfigure each track again for every song I record... That'd take all day just to do 4 or 5 songs. There's got to be a way to edit and mix each song individually from the entire recording, and then mix that down to a stereo mixed master track.

Then, how do I mix those tracks and that segment (or song) down to the master track?
you could try doing it with automation curves but you'll be making SOOOO much extra work for yourself that you should forget about it as a plan.
There's no way I want to reconfigure each track again for every song I record
you don't have to. create 1 empty project, set it up as desired, and use it as a template. when you want to record a song, open it, do a Save As, and record a song. close it, open the template, Save As, record, etc.
