Improving multiple streams, Apple TV streaming?

Anyone have a time capsule and experience a lot of stuttering with streaming files to appletv? I replaced my time capsule with my dlink router and this works much better, one stutter compared to 20 with the time capsule in a given time (this is with a wired connection). I like my time capsule too, does anyone know of a fix or how to improve QOL (multiple streams etc)?
Thanks
Mo

Since the Apple TV is not equipped with Gigabit-Ethernet ports you can expect the best streaming performance if you have both the Time Capsule (TC) and Apple TV running in the "802.11n only (5 GHz)" radio mode. Next best would be to have them connected via 100 Mb Ethernet. Anything less than these would challenge anything above SD video.

  • Apple TV Streaming Performance Seriously Degraded

I wish Apple would acknowledge there was a problem.  In the past two weeks or so the performance of the Apple servers streaming TV shows has seriously degraded.  There have been no changes in my set up and speed tests show 20-30 Mbps download speed and at least half of that up.  On the same Apple TV box Netlfix streaming, Hulu Plus streaming is working fine.  My Oppo BD player on the same network has absolutely no issues streaming Vudu films, nor Netflix.  Lastly my Directv downloading HD movies works just fine.  All this points to the fact that Apple's servers are having serious issues.  One can easily Google this issue and see that many people around the U.S. are having this issue but Apple refuses to admit to the issue.  I guess because it admits liability and shows their massive investment in their data farms appears to be failing.  I just want it to work.  Please Apple just take responsibility and fix the damned problem and quit ignoring it.

If you have playback issues with a content provider's services
In most cases, you can isolate playback issues to your home network, your broadband connection, or a possible outage with a content provider. To see if your issue is affecting multiple services or a specific content provider, try another service. For example, play a movie trailer from the main menu.
If the issue is affecting multiple services on your Apple TV, see how to troubleshoot playback performance.
If the issue is affecting a single content provider on your Apple TV, restart your Apple TV by going to Settings > General > Restart.

It's always a good idea to update your software. Software updates can include feature changes and fixes that might enhance your viewing experience.
If you still experience slow playback when you view movies and TV shows, connect your Apple TV to your local network via a wired (Ethernet) connection. If the performance improves noticeably, then consider updating or troubleshooting your Wi-Fi base station or router.

  • Apple Lossless streaming on Apple TV

When streaming Apple Lossless files on on Apple TV, what is the maximum bitrate? I realize Apple TV can stream AAC and MP3 files at 320 kbps, but what about Apple Lossless file that can often provide up to 1,000 kbps? Does Apple TV support such high bitrates? (I know the sampling is always 16 bit / 48 kHz).

Hello. For some reason, your reply to my May 2 post, has disappeared, though I still have it in email. I've reposted in below.
First, let me thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I'm confident that you've zeroed in on a solution. The clarity of your response is greatly appreciated.
Your points about compressed/lossy formats make sense. This explains the lower bitrates for those formats.
You also asked about the original source of my alac (Apple Lossless) files. As you may have guessed, the original files are typical itunes downloads, which I understand are usually MP3s at 256 kbps.
I had assumed that running them through the itunes converter would transform them into proper (16/44.1) lossless files with the associated bitrates ranging around 1,000 kbps -- with a much richer sound.
At first glance, it would appear that I was wrong. Merely upsampling the music has created larger files but without the added clarity, depth and soundstage. That's how I read your previous post. Again, correct me if I am wrong about this.
    However, there is a twist.
As I mentioned, when I play these alac files through Apple TV -- through homesharing on my computer -- they sound no better than the 256k files. However, when I play the same files through the foobar2000 media streaming software, they sound much better and show the proper bitrates at around 1,000 kbps.
On this last question, my ears may be playing tricks on me, but I don't think so. I'm playing the files through a good system: an audiolab 8200CDQ pre-amp and 8200p power amp.
    So, this has me stumped.
One last question: what is the point of having a program that upconverts MP3/AAC files to lossless if there is no improvement in sound quality. Why would you have a bigger file that sounds just as bad as the small one?
    Regards
Here is your May 3 post, which has disappeared from the websit.
    May 3
No problem. Sorry for the long reply.
I see what you mean about my equation. All 16/48 stereo signals would equate to 1536kbps. If you changed the sample rate to 44.1 (what CDs use) or something else, then the bitrate would change.
Now thats for uncompressed formats like WAV, AIFF, and PCM. And in the case of Airplay, the stream getting sent to the AppleTV is always uncompressed, no matter the the original format (aac, mp3, apple lossless, etc).
AAC files (and mp3, wma) are known as compressed formats: some fancy math equations are used to reduce the file size w/o your brain noticing the missing bits, so that initial stream (1536 kbps for instance) gets reduced to 320 kbps or lower in order to fit more songs on your device. the way this happens is really crazy but if you want to learn about it theres a magazine that did a good article. WARNING, its really technical!: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr12/articles/lost-in-translation.htm
you seem to be able to hear the difference between compressed and uncompressed formats. many people do but many dont. It all depends on your hearing, sound equipment, etc. I was wondering if the reason your not hearing a difference btwn apple lossless and aac might be because of where the lossleess files came from. did you rip them from CD's or convert them from another format? If they didn't come from CD's, WAV, or AIFF files, you probably won't hear a difference, because you can't "upconvert" from something like AAC to Apple Lossless and get higher sound quality. If they came from CDs, then maybe the AAC versions are just really good quality to begin with and so you are having a hard time telling. That article has some examples of the same music in different formats, so you can test your ears and see if you notice a difference.

  • AirPlay and 2 apple tvs (streaming only to one at a time) - possible?

    Very brief question.
I am thinking of getting two Apple TVs - one for the liing room and one for the bedroom, with a view to streaming any films etc i have on my iMac to the device.
I've googled and can't find any reference to whether 2 apple tvs is possible - i.e. does the iMac show 2 devices and i can choose which to stream to?
I'm aware that i can't stream to both devices at the same time.
So in short, am i able to setup 2 apple tvs and decide which to stream my movies to?
    Cheers!

It's more or less been said already, but when you don't already have an Apple tv, streaming terminology can be a little difficult to grasp.
There are two ways to stream content to the Apple tv. You can initiate the stream from the iMac or from the Apple tv.
If you choose to initiate the stream from the iMac (Airplay) you can only stream one item at a time.
If you initiate from the Apple tv you can simultaneously stream different (or indeed the same content) at the same time to different Apple tvs.

  • Why can't Apple TV stream movies like the iTunes store can?

I'm in the UK with an Apple TV 2nd Gen. 9Mb/s broadband speed checked and have conclusively failed to rent one single movie since I bought this a year ago. Every time I log in, select the film, purchase it, hit play and all I get is "connection error please try later" Playing movie trailers and everything else is fine. Surely the point of renting a movie online is so you can watch it straight away. Lovefilm works just fine via my PS3.
The other day I tried again on Apple TV with the same error so figured I'd try and rent the movie direct from iTunes Store on my laptop, hey presto, 2 mins later I'm watching my film via my Macbook Pro hooked up to my TV.
So the big question is: Why can not Apple TV stream a movie like the iTunes Store can? Of course I appreciate that a certain amount of buffering has to happen but that is never evident on Apple TV.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Intermittent problems
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
    Consistent Problems
A frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is the service being blocked on the network. Make sure your network isn't hidden, has a unique name, that MAC address authentication is disabled, security is set to use WPA 2 Personal and that there is only one router/device acting as a DHCP server and providing NAT services.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay
    443
    TCP

    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49163
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them.

  • Can apple tv stream from nas?

I have a Netgear ReadyNas Duo. With all my media from ITunes and the Firefly-Mediaserver is working on it. Can Apple-TV stream this content from my NAS without an working PC?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Greets René

I will copy and paste what I find out, hope it helps you.
I have an Airport Extreme, but it works with other routers as well. Find out what communication standard your router supports. DLNA or SMB.
The Airport Extreme I use does not support the DLNA standards which most external drives like LaCie Fule or DW My Cloud use. I found out it supports the SMB standard though. So a quick search on the App Store with SMB as the keyword showed up a few file managment apps and the first I tried worked!
It's called FileExplorer Free and can access files on your external drive attached to your Airport Extreme. There were more hits but since the first app I found worked I didn't bother to check out the other apps.
I tried FileExplorer with songs first and it worked. You can listen to your songs with your iPhone or iPad or Airplay them to your Airport Express and listen to them at your home audio system. I couldn't hear any loss of quality.
It also works with yorur movies. Just select the movie and watch it on your iDevice or Airplay it to your Apple TV. Works with HD movies as well with no problems. Only downside was that the Apple TV can only display .mp4 files. Even the movies bought on iTunes won't work with the app and the Apple TV. So I had to convert a few movies using the free converter HandBrake.
FileExplorer works with other types of files like photos or documenst too. Oh and as a bonus: The FileExplorer app can also access your library from the DropBox or Google Drive. Works with NAS drives as well. Looks like you need the paid version though for those extras.
In case your router supports DLNA search for a DLNA app like 8player.
So finally I can move my big movie collection to my external drive and still watch it without the need for the Mac or iTunes to run. Hope this helps you too.

  • Streaming Apple TV through a PVR?

Does anyone know if it is possible to stream Apple TV through a Bell PVR?
I have an older (not flat screen) TV that does not have a HDMI port but I do have a Bell PVR with an HDMI port.
Does anyone know if I can use Apple TV through the PVR and not directly through the TV?

Sorry, but no. I would have to guess that the Bell PVR only has 1 HDMI port. This would make it an output channel only and would not act as a converter between an Apple TV and your television.
Another other problem would be with rented content. This is because it would be encoded with  HDCP. This protection standard requires a viewing device that communicates with the source, and prohibits the recording of the content. This requires that the source (in this case the Apple TV) and the display be in physical connection, or through a device that supports HDCP (like a higher end switching receiver or input switcher).
Until you upgrade your television, I would hold off on an Apple TV.
