Improving Signal for Gaming; Wii
I am using a WRT54GS. I have no problems with signal except for one room which is at the other end of the house. Walking in the door of that room automatically reduces the signal from very good to low. The only items in the room that have signal output are a Nintendo Wii and a PS2. I would like to improve the signal in order to connect the Wii to the router. Any tweaks I can try? If not, what type of hardware can I look into to improve the singal for the Wii? Thanks.
Thanks, but unfortunately, that is of little help. I am aware that the Wii console is far away from the router. The wierd thing is that the Wii is actually recognizing other nearby access points that are clearly further away than my router. Could they have boosters or bridges? I am following these instructions in attempting to connect http://www.wiichat.com/nintendo-wii-online/5820-official-wii-wireless-internet-connection-guide.html Is there some other reason that the WRT54GS is not being recognized by the Wii?
Some of the posts I have read here and there indicate that the router security settings may conflict with the Wii. Some people have reported connection problems until they disable the security settings or switch to WEP. Maybe the access points that are being detected by the Wii do not have WPA2. The Wii, however, allows for a WPA2 seting, so there must be a way to establish the connection using that seting.
What I am looking for is advise on establishing the connection, and also the best way to improve my signal without moving either piece.

Improving signal for the airport
How do you increase the signal speed and range? My ISP provider states they are giving me 1.5 mps service but my speed tests only show 0.2-0.5mps. Very slow and irritating. Just bought a new AirPort Extreme and speeds are no better!
The AirPort Express will only extend the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router....an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express.
Is your "main" wireless router one of these products? -
Hi Guys,
Im looking at buying the retina macbook pro with the above specs, i like to play call of duty 2/4 and counterstrike, would i be able to game comfortably with these specs, i.e high fps/smooth, i wont just be using macbook for gaming as im a graphics designer but i do love occasional multiplayer game.
many thanksPete77777 wrote:
do processors make a difference to fps ingame?
Not as much as the performance of the graphics chip, because that is what does all the heavy lifting as far as rending on the screen. Intel HD 3000, 4000 etc., only graphics is really poor as it's only CPU based.
It's really not advised to use a expensive Mac laptop for 3D gaming, especially the Retina because it's sealed.
The reason is the hotter the Mac gets, the more air it has to draw in to cool the machine, which more vent clogging dust it inhales which overheats the machine and tends to shorten it's lifespan. Also using the inferior bubble membrane keyboard too much tends to wear it out.
If you want to 3D game, either buy a dedicated Windows 7 3D gaming tower so you can clean the dust out, upgrade the graphics card and be compatible with everyone else, use tougher keyboards (clicky clack types) and so forth, or if your budget can't do that and the Mac, then a PS3 or a XBox.
3D games are always improving, new ones come out and require better video cards, you can't upgrade a video card in a laptop. So you won't be playing for long.
OS X changes every year, so it breaks games. Windows 7 will remain so until 2020.
http://www.cbscores.com/index.php?sort=ogl&order=desc
TigerDirect will help you build a gaming PC, and with this video card you'll likely never have to upgrade it.

G4 MDD for gaming (Tiger & some classic) single v dual questions . .
I'm setting up a computer for gaming.
OS X 10.4.11 (or 10.3 if thats better suited?)
Unreal, Icewind dale, Giants, Sacred, Shadow Bane, etc . .
All the older games 00 -04
Would it make more sense to use a 1.25 single cpu vs 867DP or 1Ghzdp?
Since tiger does not spport dual core, I'd assume most of the games don't either?
I know the 1.25 (or even a 1ghz single) runs much cooler than the dual under load.
Basically is a dual a waste without using Leopard or software that supports multi core cpu?
Any ideas?
Message was edited by: Patrick BagdasarianWhen you say tiger is dual processor aware, how is it and when does it benefit?
Multi threading is supported in dual processor machines, allowing for the distribution of tasks (within one or with multiple tasks), making for faster performance. Boot, OS background services and processes, multi tasking, etc., are all improved and utilize the OS X multi processor/multi threading ability.
Granted, the processes are relatively rudimentary (as compared to forthcoming OS versions), but the support is there.
A major factor is that accompanying software must also be multi processor aware to gain benefits beyond OS X functions.
also how does this matter if the game is not dual processor aware?
No (or little) benefit will be derived from multi processors with SP processor optimized software.
Some CPU intensive gaming will be improved, simply due the the multithreading ability of the OS X core services.
Some DP aware software define which tasks are broken between two processors. In the case of UT2004, the audio portion is assigned to a separate processor, to allow more computational power of the other processor to be applied to graphics.
Other software simply allows the OS services to assign threads as the system protocols dictate.
This is only possible with a multi processor aware OS.
Actually, the ability of the OS to be DP aware began in OS 9. 3rd party software, however, was slow to take advantage of the ability.
Currently, multi processing aware software has to add multi core awareness to gain full benefit of current machines like the Mac Pro.
This is one of the big areas of development in OS X 10.6.
(When I used the term dual core, I just meant dual processors as in the mdd series)
I figured that you know the difference, but many don't. Keeping the terms straight is for the benefit of clarity and for all readers. -
Which is better for gaming and why?
Hi,
I was researching budget gaming laptops(around $1000, INR 55000) and came up with two choices.....
1)HP Pavilion g6z-1d00 Notebook PC
http://shopping2.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/A2B39AV?HP-Pavilion-g6z-1d0...
2)HP Envy 14-2130nr Notebook PC
http://shopping2.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/QE295UA?HP-ENVY-14-2130nr-Noteb...
Could anybody please tell me which is better for gaming (main purpose and best performance)?
The HP Envy looks great but I don't know much about AMD Quad Core.....
Also, is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on the HP Envy ( AMD Radeon 6630 to a better one) via a HP centre?
It seems to run most games quite well, but I need it to be able to play new games for at least 4 years more (college), while not factoring in the costs for any possible graphics card upgrade....
Please help!!Thanks Huffer _ very useful.
I wasn't aware that there was a heat problem with the i7 processors, my dv8 runs at around 42 to 52 degrees, mind you I don't really put it under much load. I use it to play Blu-ray ISO files on my projector and for photo editing (Adobe CS4), it's an 820QM.
I have also changed the thermal compound to ICDiamond and drilled holes in the speaker cover to improve air flow, that made a difference too.
@ abhishekmaha
Don't take my comment to seriously, although I think it has some truth to it, it was meant to poke a bit of fun at you.
Heat has always been one of the biggest factors when it comes to any computer, designers try to make them thinner, lighter and cheaper and those types don't work for gaming very well. They're OK for the occasional one, but not on a regular basis. I believe that if you game on any machine that was not meant for it, you will not get 4 years out of it _ 2 years.
I wish I could tell you different, but I am not going to lie to you.
Heat basically affects 3 things on a laptop, the solder that holds the components on the motherboard, any mechanical moving parts, eg the hard drive, fan _ and the battery. You can remove the battery to prolong its life when gaming.
Heat breaks down the solder over time and the mother board simply stops working as far as the hard drive, it stops spinning because the tiny bearing(s) in there dry out and seize up.
If you don't want to use a cooling mat then prop up the back of the laptop, hanging it over the edge of the table will expose the fan intake, but will block off other vents.
60 degrees is a bit warm too, 50 is better or rather, the cooler the better. What ever machine you get, make a note of what the temps are when you first boot up and when it's hot. The idea is to get an average so you can judge when it is dangerously getting hot.
P.S. Be sure and give Huffer a kudos too. -
I am looking to buy a laptop that I can play the sims 3 on but I'm unsure of one that i can get. I really like the hp laptops
These are the system requirements for the 2 options i can get
FOR WINDOWS XP
2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
1 GB RAM
128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
The latest version of DirectX 9.0c
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games
FOR WINDOWS VISTA
2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
1.5 GB RAM
128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1
At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved gamesHe's not looking for XP or Vista - he's looking for Sims 3 and posted the listed specs for Sims 3. Unfortunately because it's an older game the box hasn't been updated for Win7.
Requirements for a Win7 laptop will be somewhere between those for XP and Vista. Almost any laptop will have enough CPU power for Sims 3, but I am not sure about graphics chipset requirements nowadays.
Traditionally I would only recommend discrete (ATI or NVidia) graphics for gaming like this, but Sims 3 might have low enough requirements that the integrated graphics in Sandy Bridge processors (almost any new laptop at this point) might do the trick. Sandy Bridge brought MASSIVE improvements to integrated graphics compared to previously available options.

I have Airport Extreme as the base unit and an Express unit in a room separated by a brick wall to improve signal. Express shows a green light indicating signal but my iPad does not perform well. How can I improve other than hardwire ethernet connection?
Other suggestions, and more info about the nature of the problem, may be in this Apple tech note.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
For example, you might find that the brick wall is not the only problem. There may be other devices pumping out enough wireless interference to be making things even worse.
I agree with Bob Timmons that Ethernet is best and most reliable. And that powerline (which I use) is easier and potentially faster than wireless...but only if your power lines do not have electrical devices plugged in which produce electrical noise on the line. Powerline will be slower than Gigabit Ethernet.
Ethernet cable is the only way to ensure that the signal goes directly there in a shielded way for a clear fast signal. Wireless and powerline are much slower because of all the other things the signal has to fight past to get to the other device. -

Which Imac would be better for gaming?
So i've got a choice between these two models -
£1329.60
3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
8gb Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1GB GDDR5
Apple care
27 inch model
3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB (two 4GB) memory
1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB video memory
Apple care
£1407.60
Basically, the decision is down to, do I want a slightly better graphics card and bigger screen, or a smaller screen and better processer?
I just want to gauge opinions, i'll be using it as my day to day computer as well, some video editing, but nothing too strenuous. How big is the difference in graphic and processing powers.
Thanks for your helpWith all due respect the question was "which iMac would be better for gaming?". Key word here is 'better', not 'perfect', not 'ideal'; just 'better'. Unqualified answers and/or sweeping statements do very little to contribute to a discussion, let alone answer the question under consideration.

New Macbook Pro 2014 for Gaming / casual use
Hello there! I currently have a 2011 13" Macbook Pro with
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
16GB RAM
500GB Harddrive
and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
I really like to play video games but with this current setup ^ its very sluggish and I get very low FPS
I'm considering getting the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and with the 3.0GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
My questions:
Will this computer be able to handle a constant 60fps in most games? (Borderlands 2, portal 2, Bioshock Infinite)
And I've heard other places that this computer also has a Nividia graphics card that it switches over to when you play anything that requires more than the Intel 4000 that it comes with.
Thanks for the help!Hi there!
No it wont.
Macbook Pro's hardware are mediocre for gaming. In your specific case, the 13" does not offer the possibility of a dedicated graphics card, only comes with Intel Iris. The 15" one does, the NVIDIA GT 750M with 2gb, yet it's weak for gaming above 40-50 fps, also dual-core processors are not very powerful these days either and you will most likely experience heating issues on intensive gaming sessions. If you like gaming Mac is not very efficient for it, unless you get a mac pro, but of course you would loose portability. The 27" iMac can be set with the GT 780m, it has 4gb but its still weak since its a mobile graphic chip as well, even the 5k iMac uses almost identical hardware setup than the regular iMac but with an AMD chip (also 4gb ram), while the 5k looks great with such hardware it is unable to handle smooth gaming on that resolution as well.
Dont get me wrong, I'm not here to trash Apple, at the office we work with around 8 to 10 macbook pros but none of them, not even high end ones are able to game smoothly, in fact, some games run better on windows via bootcamp than OS X.
Hope it helps. -

SELECT ticket_no,name_of_the_passenger..
FROM ticket_master
WHERE ticket_no NOT IN
(SELECT Ticket_no
FROM ticket_cancellations
WHERE trip_id = my_trip_id);
This involves creating a little temp table for each record in ticket_no. Then full scanning it.
Change it to
SELECT ticket_no,name_of_the_passenger..
FROM ticket_master B
WHERE ticket_no NOT EXISTS
(SELECT null
FROM ticket_cancellations A
WHERE A.ticket_no = B.ticket_no
AND trip_id = my_trip_id);
Then you get an index hit in both cases. -
How can I record multiple signals for a long period of time?
Hi, everyone
I am new at labView I just recentlyl started using it. Right now I am working on this assignment
that I have to display en record six different signals comming up from a DAQ. so basically What I did
for my IV is placing a whileloop. Inside the while loop I set up the DAQ assistant and then I send that
to a split signal function in order to split the signas that are comming from the DAQ ( so those signals
are EMG1,EMG2, blood flow1, blood flow2, blood pressure, and AM stimulation) after I split the signals
I send each individual signals to a waveforme graph, but my problem is that I need to record those individual
signals for a long period of time every second for about 8 hours. so it will be really helpfull if someone can
guide me through this. Thanks
RegardsHi,
With your while loop, you'd better use low-level VIs to write your data to a file. Please see attached...I've used text file function but if you need ta save a large amount of data, you may need to use binary file functions instead (nearly the same way to perform this whatever you chose text file or binary file function).
Best,
J.

i want to instal windows 7 using bootcamp on my mac book pro and how large do i have to make the partition if i want to use it for gaming?
"At least 16 GB of free space on the disk onto which you’re installing for 32-bit, or 20 GB for 64-bit (for Microsoft Windows and Windows-based applications)."
That's what Apple proposes in here Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows
Personally I would double these amounts and add to that the diskspace needed for your Windows games.

IMac for Gaming using Win XP Pro
Early 2006 I purchased an iMac 2.0 w/ 2G RAM using x1600 ATI card w/ beta boot camp using XP Pro for gaming purposes.
Now I want to expand my horizons a bit to a new iMac with the same idea as above.
My gaming includes Battlefield 2, COD4, and soon Crysis. So here is the system I want:
iMac 3.06 w/ nvidia 8800 GS which I read is NOT the 8800 but some other nvidia card. I want to expand to 4G RAM, BUT replacing all the RAM with either Crucial or Kingston for Dual Channel. Will XP Pro be stable w/ 4G dual channel? Will this system utilize DX 10. w/ the nvidia card on this Mac? If I get Crysis, I want to be able to set everything on HIGH. Are there any Driver problems that I should be aware of?Firefox has no built-in sounds. The following Extension offers a few.

Macbook Pro and 30" Cinema display for gaming?
Does anyone know if a Macbook Pro (17" i7 2010) would be powerful enough to drive the 30" Cinema display (or a Dell 30") specifically for gaming to a reasonable performance FPS with a game such as Call of Duty 4?
Would I have to knock down the resolution from the native 2560x1600 and if so is the image quality still acceptable or blurry? I realize I need either the dual link adaptor or the display port to achieve the max resolution but just wondering if it is asking too much of the graphics card?
Thanks in advance, any info much appreciated.
Rick.Hi. The graphics card will be able to handle it. I would suggest using a Min Display Port to HDMI adapter. Most new adapters will even transfer the sound too so you can use the speakers built speakers on the TV.
I often use my 2008 model MacBook Pro with a Mini Display Port to HDMI on my 62'' Samsung DLP. Perfect 1080p quality.
