Improving TV display

This isn't really Front Row specific but I don't know where to post it and I assume that people here will have the best answers due to the intended uses of Front Row. I have an iMac hooked up to a 55" Sony HDTV. Front Row looks pretty good on it so that isn't a problem. However, when trying to do something like browse the web the display is far from optimum and rather difficult to read. I've fooled around a little with different display options through System Preferences to no avail. Is there a way to improve the display quality for the uses outside of Front Row?
Thanks.

Compared to a computer monitor, TVs have very low resolution. A normal TV is 768x576 for PAL and 640x480 for NTSC. Even HD TV is not that high resolution for its size. The best quality HD TV is 1920x1080 which is about the same resolution as a 20" iMac. But it's a whole lot bigger. An iMac has a screen resolution of about 100ppi. Your 55" HD TV, by comparison, has a resolution of about 40ppi (assuming its 1080i/p). Thus, the text may look a whole lot jaggier. They are also geberally designed to display interlaced images rather than progressive scan images which can also affect the perceived quality of static text.
Notwithstanding that, there are another couple of reasons it may not look good. The most dramatic would be using an analogue connection (like composite plugs or S-Video plugs) to connect your TV to your iMac. Use a digital connection if you can. If you are using a digital connection through a DVI port check that your TV resolution is set to 1920x1080 (assuming you have a 1080i set) through the Display control panel. If it is set to a different resolution you will likely get inferior quality results.
But at the end of the day, your TV is designed to display movies (or equivalent) and it will do a very good job at that. It is not designed to display static text and so will be correspondingly worse at doing that. Horses for courses.

  • New and improved panels (display) for the Tx20 and Wx20 series or just the X220 series?

Lenovo surly impressed us with the specifications with their new Lenovo ThinkPad X220-series notebook, not only does it feature great performance and battery life but suddenly they've gone away from the rather sluggish TN-panels they've been using for the past few years and given us a high-quality IPS option for those whom care about display quality.
Now the million dollar question is whether they'll do something about the display panel quality on their other ThinkPad line-ups or is just something happening on the X220 series? Personally the ThinkPad T420s is more appealing than the ThinkPad X220 simply because of the size being somewhat too small for my use, id like to opt for the T420s instead because that assures me more space for my hands to rest, a not too small screen along with a few other things.
I wasn't really planning on going ThinkPad this year because the display quality of my ThinkPad T400s and ThinkPad W510 has been a complete joke. Whereas the 1920x1080 panel on the W510 is doing okay it's still a rather low-contrast panel without barley anything impressive about it and when it comes to the display quality of the T400s it's downright disappointing with it's low-contrast, limited viewing angle screen.
So when I had finally decided to look elsewhere Lenovo drops the X220 with good hardware, battery life and most importantly a IPS panel option I was happily surprised and considering I love everything about the ThinkPad series besides the sluggish speakers and display quality I'm ready too pick up yet another ThinkPad series notebook if Lenovo finally offers some improved quality on their display offerings.
But would it be too much to hope for seeing improvements in regards of the display on the T and W series as well or do you think this is a X220 series only thing? And I guess we wont see anything higher resolution than 1366x768 which even though it's IPS quality is somewhat low resolution when I'm used to 1920x1080 on my W510 for instance.

I figured IPS is not going to happen this year, but as the new T420 and T420s is 16:9 compared to last years T410 and T410s and the T400 and T400s before that 16:10 screens there must be some new panels coming this time around?
Lets just hope it's not the same low contrast TN-panels like before as there is no doubt that you can get TN-panels that are way better than what Lenovo has been using for the past years.

  • How can I improve the display of HD photos shown from Iphoto Apple TV when it supports only 720p.

The only way I can get full resolution is to ditch the apple tv an run my Macbook Pro via HDMI through the HD TV. Then the results are brilliant.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You don't get full resolution photos via your macbook, although the resolution might be slightly better. Generally speaking photos on the Apple TV are usually quite good so there may be reasons they aren't for you, aside from a slightly different resolution.
Some have noticed that some photo formats don't show very well, whilst I believe some for example have managed to get RAW photos to play they aren't officially supported. You may also get improved pictures if you try adjusting the HDMI out setting.
Your TV will also play a large part in the matter TV's that are good at upscaling will scale the Apple TV's 720p output better than those that aren't.

  • Can anyone help me solve the problem of text displaying very rough on my new ASUS PA279Q display monitor running off my MacBook Pro?

This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way ---  ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?
Thanks for reading my post. Hope someone can help; offer any suggestions? Words or wisdom?
Has anyone else had similar issues and figured out a resolution? Help!

  • Premiere Elements 9 Tryout Serious Display Problem

I will confine my editorializing to "Deja vu, all over again" and describe the Premiere Elements 9 problem that sounds like I was reliving the release of Premiere Elements 8.
I downloaded and installed Premiere Elements 9 tryout, and it worked great for about 7 days. With no changes in the computer environment, suddenly when Premiere Elements 9 was loading a new project, it would stop at PlayerMediaCore.prm and pop up a message:
"We have detected an incompatible driver. To get a better and faster playback performance, please update your display driver. Display driver details: NVIDIA Corporation GeForce....." and it went on to fully name my video card driver. When I clicked on OK, the program continued to load completely and opened to the workspace where the Edit Mode Monitor performance was, best described as, wacky....Timeline content that would not present in the Edit Mode Monitor, Preview Windows that froze in the Edit Mode Monitor, etc. And, Edit Mode Full Screen Previews did not work at all. The technical irony in all this was that I have Premiere Elements 6, 7, and 8/8.0.1 all installed on the same computer, and all were still performing great when I was using them one at a time as a control.
When I went to Hardware/Device Manager and attempted to "update" my NVIDIA card driver, the "update" that installed automatically was older than what is was replacing. BUT, now Premiere Elements 9 did work as expected. HOWEVER, now my Premiere Elements 6, 7, and 8/8.0.1 were crashing at various times from loading to opening of the workspace. I am still hunting for a replacement NVIDIA driver that will fix the Premiere Elements 9 display issue and not kill my Premiere Elements 6, 7, and 8/8.0.1.
In investigating this matter, I noticed that the Premiere Elements 8/8.0.1 "Enable GPU Playback" is gone in version 9. And, now, if you right click the Premiere Elements 9 Edit Mode Monitor, you have a Playback Quality option of Automatic or Highest. That tells me that Adobe was at work making changes in the name of better. And, I am wondering if what I am encountering is related to Adobe's attempted improvements in display which was one of the issues in Premiere Elements 8.0 when it was released. Or, could this be related to making AVCHD a native format? Lots of possibilities.
The above is my long way of saying "Has anyone run into this type of situation with Premiere Elements 9, any workarounds found (other than buying a new video card just for Premiere Elements 9, ???"
At this point, I know of one other person who got a similar message from Premiere Elements 9 and resolved the problem by updating the NVIDIA card driver. But that still raises the question "Do we need a special video card driver just for Premiere Elements 9?" and "Why?"

    To Vijay and A.T. Romano:
I am happy to help out any way I can. First, I do plan on installing PE9.0 on 2 other computers, both running Windows XP. Currently, both of these computers (Dell desktop and laptop) have PE2.0 running, with no problems. I will try to do these installations later on today.
The 2 new computers have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. While I have installed PE2.0 on these computers, the program runs slowly. I assume PE2.0 and Windows 7 are not compatible. As I mentioned before, PE 9.0 runs fine on the Dell desktop. It does not play videos on the Sony laptop.
The contents of the text file are..
    ##FALSE#0#0#0
The error message when the program is launched is..
Display driver details :NVIDIA Corporation – GeForce GT 330M/PCI/SSE2 3.0 NVIDIA 188.67
I do hope this help. I can only guess that the problem is wide spread.
    Thank you again.

  • Adobe Customization Wizard X issue PDF icon and disable display in browser after installation

I have used the Adobe Customization Wizard X wizard to setup a .MTS files for the custom install. When this is installed using SCCM 2012 with command (msiexec /q /i "\\Server\Share\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="\\Server\Share\AcroRead.mst") this all works fine but all PDFs on the machine that gets this deployment (Windows 7 x64 or Windows XP x86) the icons for the .pdf don't show the Adobe icon they show the generic Windows icon when the program is not assigned but still work to launch Adobe reader. I have tried to unistall and reinstall but still the same resaults. If I install the .msi with no .mst the icon shows up just fine. So it has to be something with when you use the customization wizard or the .mst. I have also tried assigning .PDF to another program and the icon changes to that program and assign it back and no icon. Also if I set Display PDF in browser = Disabled this setting does not stick. I have just installed via Adobe not using SCCM via command line I get the same resaults.
I have only selected these customizations:
         Installation Options:
    Silently (No interface)
    Suppress reboot
         Shortcuts
    No desktop Icon
           EULA
Suppress display of End User License Agreement (EULA)

    Disable all updates
Disable Help > Purchases Adobe Acrobat
    Disable Product Improvement Program
Display PDF in browser = Disabled

    Hi Ben,
Here's what I am trying to accomplish I had Acrobat Standard v10.1.4 scripted so I can deploy it to a Citrix Server (XENAPP6) via SCCM 2007 I have at least 50 licenses of Acrobat Standard deployed to 50 users. All of our Citrix Servers have Adobe Reader v10.* installed as our default pdf viewer. There are other apps that are deployed to this Citrix Server and I wanted to make sure that pdf files open on Adobe Reader instead of Acrobat Standard.
I had to change the installer tables directly so I don't have to get it re-scripted to use this command line. Is it a best practice not to change the isntaller table?
    msiexec /i "\\source\Acrobat10\AcroStan.msi" transforms="\\source\Acrobat10\AcroStan.mst" LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP=”YES” /qb /norestart
Thanks a lot for your help I'm looking forward to hear from you.

  • Display colors suddenly off - all black objects red or red glow

Suddenly, display colors went off. The cursor arrow is now red. Script displayed on browsers is now black with red hue and overtone. Pictures all "glow" red where they are supposed to be black. I did consciously change any settings. Short of a "clean install," how can I restore the original color display settings, or could it be another problem?

    Hello stepheneng,
Have you checked in System Preferences>Displays>Color tab for settings there? Is your normal Display Profile selected? You may want to try calibrating by clicking on the button found in that pane and see if you can improve your display.
    hope that helps some,

  • Safari displays my photos in my Wordpress blog incorrectly

Safari does not display images on my blog properly on my iMac 24". However, Firefox does display it correctly.
But on my wife's MacBook it looks fine. So this leads me to believe it is Safari on my iMac. I've reset Safari several times an it did nothing to improve the display of the images.
Anybody have any suggestions? Reinstall Safari perhaps?

    HI Glenn,
Go to Safari / Preferences. Make note of the preferences under each tab then delete this file.
    com.apple.Safari.plist
~/Library/Preferences. Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, go to Safari / Preferences - Appearance. Make sure: Display images when the page opens
    is selected.

  • Mac Pro - Windows 7 - Apple Cinema Display

Hi -- after years of not installing Windows on a separate drive, I finally did it. The install went failrly well, wireless devices work in Windows 7. My remaining issue is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to recognize the Apple Cinema Display (ACD) with the Mini Display Port. If I switch to a different DVI monitor, the display seems fine. However, if I go back to the ACD, the display shakes upon boot up, and the resolution, screen size in off and a generic display is seen in the Control Panel. Sometimes, it does recognize the ACD, which is weird, but never on boot up.
Is the only solution running a DVI adaptor and not using the ACD with the Mini Display Port? When I first installed the BootCamp drivers, it seemed to work, but there were a few updates afterwards, and it seems that I lost whatever had stabilized the issue.
    Thanks!

There was someone complaining about using two VGA monitors on 2010 w/ ATI 5770.
There is an improved dual display support now in Windows 8. Windows 7 was always "where is my screen" on startup. The video port close to the motherboard seems to be A or primary that it looks for on startup.
I have 23" ACD (2006 unit) Mac Pro but always used GTX, no ATI card (well recently I was using Windows only and an ATI 6790 or something).
And of course you must have installed ATI (Windows own drivers are iffy or "okay" but not the best.
Apple drivers for Windows (aka "Boot Camp" 3.x or Lion's 4.01) include driver support for the ACD.
You say MDP and 4870 in profile, but I didn't think Apple's 4870 had one, and flashed PC cards always have trouble (unflashed 4870 would of course work as normal as can under Windows).
Rollback update of driver is one step. Run Driver Sweeper 3.2 and CCleaner (and clean the registry) to get the graphic driver installed and 'clean.'
Patch Tuesday can always affect a few systems and a problem but more likely a conflict with something else.
One at a time see if you can get new graphic driver to help.
Wtih the 5770 Apple tech note does mention not using adapters.
And don't allow Windows to provide gpu driver if it asks

    hai friends,
i am doing a flexcoldfusion project. i used text area and label .first i give data to txtarea then save data. that stored in db.then i reterive that data. display in label.
my issue i gave more data in txtarea like this

now i reterive that data. it shows only hello    .what is the problem give solution?

    Hi Welcomecan
The Lable property dose not allow multiple lines in disply.. if u want to disply more data on screen you can apporch mx:Text  that will allow multiple lines and it will show u entire text.. i
what is the issue here with the lable is lable only show u the text upto the width mentioned to the text.. if u increase the text length it will  show u just like " .........."
use mx:Text to improve the display of the text or it will allow u to display the entire text... Lable will show u the large amount of text

  • A30 Display Driver Problem

When running games, after 10 mins or so display freezes or reverts to basic 16? colours. Computer displays " ATI2VGA Driver has stopped working properly". Usually have to switch off to reset as computer is now locked up.This also occaisionally happens when running browser etc. have installed latest driver from ATI website, with no improvement. Display Adaptor is ATI mobility Radeon 9000.Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
Display driver that you can find on Tools & utilities CD is tested by Toshiba and it should work properly. If you install driver downloaded by ATI website there is no guarantee that it will be works properly.
In my opinion it will be better to install display driver distributed by Toshiba.

  • Illustrator CS5 display performance of fine lines and patterns

    Hi,
is there a way to improve the display performance in Illustrator CS5? I am working on a large piece which has a lot of very fine cross-hatching that I create with dotted .5 lines (why I'm using Illustrator rather than Photoshop for that isn't open for discussion ). It looks fine when saved as a jpeg or exported to Photoshop, but in Illustrator itself the lines show up significantly thicker and darker - which is very confusing. Switching to Overprint/Pixel Preview doesn't change much.
I've taken a couple of screenshots (taken at 16% zoom) to illustrate what I mean.
    Illustrator screenshot:
    Photoshop screenshot:
Also I've noticed the same problem with pattern tiles - when zoomed out to ~50% they start to lose their seemlessness (and look like an incomprehensible mess)

it's a very large file so I export it at 72ppi. But exporting isn't a problem - regardless of what resolution I export it at the lines always look smoother and softer in Photoshop. Zooming in at 100% in Illustrator gives an accurate display (exactly the same as in PS, I compared the two), it's only when I zoom out that the lines start to look rough and jagged.

  • Sharpening display of text

    Hello all
I'm most impressed with the way my new widescreen displays graphics. They are definitely better than on my iBook.
However, the display of text is less sharp than on my iBook. The characters are blacker, but fuzzier, and accents in particular are not distinct. They appear to be chopped off horizontally in some way, like inkjet printing when the head needs cleaning.
This is a major problem for me, since I read and write mainly in Vietnamese, which consists mostly of accented vowels. It is difficult and tiring to read Vietnamese clearly on my MacBook.
Is there any way I can improve the display of text, make it clearer? Are there different fonts we should use?
Thankyou for any help you can offer with this.

    A couple things...
    1. You have the display resolution set to maximum (native)? If not then this will effect the quality of text on the screen.
    2. System Preferences -> Appearance, down at the bottom, change the font smoothing and see if this corrects or improves the detail of the text. You might have to log out and log back in to notice the change.
    Good luck
Oh and if you can check another MacBook, like at an Apple store you could see if that one has a similar problem.
