Imprting home movies into IT7

I have been able to import (if that is the right word) my edited home movies into iTunes 7. I think this will be a neat way to organize these.
These are movies initially edited and then saved out of iMovie as CD-ROM quality QuickTime movies, and stored in a folder called "Completed Movies" inside my "Movies" folder. I have been able to use iTunes to categorize them by year, genre, etc. I think this will work rather well to organize my movies, and may motivate me to clean up all the loose video I have on my hard drive.
Questions? Have I really imported these movies into iTunes7? Or as I suspect, is iTunes just acting as a organizer of all this data, be it music, movies, podcast, etc? Depending on how iTunes work, how do I then upgrade to another Mac and keep all the organization intact? THANKS!
iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I think only mp4 variants work.  Definitely not mpeg2 or Flash.  If you have mp4s you could try changing the extension to .m4v

  • Can I download DVD home movies into imovies?

Can I download DVD home movies into imovie to edit and create enhanced DVDs?

    Yes.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Bringing in DVD home movies into QT question

My mini-DV tape camcorder is on the blink, so today I purchased a Panasonic mini DVD camcorder that doesn't have firewire [it has USB 2] and since my old Mac only has USB 1.1 and firewire I have a question.
My question: I've read that QT pro can bring dvd home movies in. How does one or what does one do to bring in a DVD home movie to QT pro? My purpose for doing this in the future is to share clips from the home movies via email to family and friends [I know they will be small and compressed but family and friends still really enjoy seeing them in an email].
Further information: my old Mac also has a [firewire connected] Lacie DVD burner that can read and burn to most any DVD format [dvd-r, dvd+r, and even can accept mini DVD's and read them]. The Panasonic mini DVD camcorder I bought today is the model number VDR-D230.

I made and finalized my first mini dvd movie on the camera today to test it in the Lacie external drive connected to the Cube.
Concerning the comparison between Handbrake and Streamclip. Does either allow one to record only parts of the dvd home movie on the fly and exclude other parts. From using Handbrake, I think the last time I used it, that Handbrake basically converted an entire dvd to QT (or mpeg which is readable by QT). I may be wrong about Handbrake because I can only remember using it twice. Is Streamclip better at this, meaning can Streamclip allow me to record only parts of the dvd home movie on the fly to a format that QT can recognize, or does it work in the same fashion as Handbrake when it comes to this area. Also, I should mention that the Panasonic dvd camcorder does come with software called ImageMixer 3 - but after reading about ImageMixer 3 in the manual it requires a 1ghz G4 mac, and I'm only at 450 currently (I could upgrade my cube's processor to a dual g4 (costs almost as much as buying a mini mac or better yet even a single g4 (1.8 ghz speed for $249). I probably won't go the route of ImageMixer 3 since I just bought a $400 camcorder but it was an idea that crossed my mind (until I read about it's requirements) - I am wondering if ImageMixer 3 is good software though.
I did notice you said one can buy a plug in for QT that allows it to see dvd movies. I wonder how that works. I know with my prior mini dv tape camcorder qt would allow me to play the tape (while connected via firewire) and make a movie on the fly and could choose (as it played) when I'd click record and stop (while in qt). Does the plug in for QT for around $20 that allows it to bring in a dvd home movie allow QT to work in a similiar way? If so, for $20 it's a no brainer and I'll dish out the $20 right now.
By the way, I'm not looking at doing in major serious video work here or looking for high quality video. My reason for doing this is to get a low quality small short clip into an email that can be viewed, amuse the parents and friends, and is small enough to email (like qt sharing did with my prior mini dv tape camcorder that went on the blink).
As a follow up to finalizing my first mini dvd on this camcorder. I made a mistake by following the young salesman's recommendation to use the mini dvd-r dual layer disks. When I inserted it into my Lacie which I thought could read anything [and it can read and burn cd, dvd-r, dvd+r] I quickly learned it could not read a dual layer mini dvd disk. Thankfully, I have 2 dvd players connected on top of my tv [one is a dvd burner) and did a copy of the mini dual [I tested and both of them could read the mini dual - the must have been manufactured after the Lacie was]. I know this is not the best solution, since I think the mini dual was converted into an analog signal and then recorded to another dvd [but it was a workable solution to get the dvd to be recognized and pulled into my Mac]. I'll buy some mini dvd's tomorrow for the camcorder that aren't dual layer and test in the Lacie (they should work - I hope). I know it's definitely not advisable [or would work] to try to insert any mini dvd into straight into my Cube [always use the Lacie drive with mini's since it's tray loading, eh].
p.s. I was just informed by Handbrake of this update [dunno if the update changes anyones thinking on Handbrake], but here's the link

  • Can I import AVI QuickTime home movies into iTunes

I have some home movies I would like to place into my iTunes. I take the icon of the movie, and I place it over the iTunes and a plus sign appears, however when I release the mouse, the movie does not imports into iTunes.
I have also tried to go to the iTunes menu, choosing file, add to library and choosing the file. But it does not work ether. I still do not see that the video has been imported into my iTunes.
Can any one tell me what am I doing wrong?
I thought it would be easy to import my videos to iTunes.
The music videos I have downloaded from the iTunes store have downloaded well. Are they a different format?
    Hope you can help.

I don't think iTunes will take AVI files directly. You will have to convert it.

  • Scanning DVDs (of home movies) into iMovie?

I am working on making a movie for a family event.
    I have two questions:
    1. I have a lot of home movies that we had transferred from video to DVD. Is there some way to scan the DVD and then just import the segments I want into iMovie? As these are not commercial, there is no protection -- would like to put in comptuer, scan video, and select clips to put in iMovie
    2. I have some older movies with clips that I would like to use in iMovie 6 -- should I stick to iMovie6 or use iMovie 7? I know how to use iMove6, but am happy to learn the new one. Just want something easy to use. End product will be projected on large screen at family gathering.
Would any sort of video grabber help?
    thanks for your help!
    Paul

    1. I have a lot of home movies that we had transferred from video to DVD. Is there some way to scan the DVD and then just import the segments I want into iMovie? As these are not commercial, there is no protection -- would like to put in comptuer, scan video, and select clips to put in iMovie
Most direct approach would be to simply copy the non-zero VOB title sets from the DVD to a local hard drive and then convert them to DV (useable with either iMovie HD or iMovie '08). I would personally use MPEG Streamclip (free but requires the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component) here so I can flag the content as either 4:3 or 16:9 for proper handling by iMovie '08, but many applications can actually perform the conversion -- including iSquint (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware but also requires the $20 component), etc.
    2. I have some older movies with clips that I would like to use in iMovie 6 -- should I stick to iMovie6 or use iMovie 7? I know how to use iMove6, but am happy to learn the new one. Just want something easy to use. End product will be projected on large screen at family gathering.
If the editing you wish to perform is more or less traditional, then iMovie HD offers more "traditional" options. iMovie '08 is probably better suited for "lite" edits requiring simple titles/transitions coming from non-DV source files and destined for immediate online posting. Since many of their functions overlap, in many cases either can be used. As you become more proficient in their use, you will like lend to lean towards one over the other depending on you specific project requirements, so it is probably best to keep both handy.

  • Importing home movies into itunes

i know that you can import home movies from imovie into itunes and then import it onto your ipod, but im not sure on how you do that.

Go to the "FIle" menu, select "Export", and select the iPod icon. Only works in iMovie 6.0 (iLife '06).

  • Old home movies into iMovie

My father-in-law had some old home movies put onto a DVD and I wanted to put them with music with iMovie how can up convert the old movies on the DVD into a format I can use in iMovie. I copied the disc onto my computer using disc utilty and came up with a .cdr file
    thanks

You can extract video from a DVD, but you will lose some quality.
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.products.htm
Have a look at this thread for a bit more information:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4562113&#4562113
A simpler method would be to just put the DVD in a DVD player, connect your miniDV camcorder to the player and just record the DVD to DV tape that way. There would be some loss of quality, but if the original movies were VHS or even the old reel-to-reel tapes, the loss would probably not be detectable. I have done this on occasion, and it worked fine. Having old VHS footage on a DVD improved it quite a bit, so recording from DVD to DV camcorder still produced a movie that was better than the original.

  • Which format to capture home movies into?

I have 100+ hours of home movies on tape starting from 1983. I want to capture them into a computer digital format. But which one? Which format will stay supported the longest time from now? In other words, what format will computers 30 years from now will hopefully still have built in support for it? I sure don't want to have to do this again. What would you recommend and why?
    1) AVI (but doesn't it even have problems now requiring the right codecs?)
    2) MPEG -2
    3) MPEG-4 H.264
    4) Some other one?
    Thanks!

It will depend on what you wish to do with the material. If you wish to edit it, then DV-AVI Type II would be the ultimate format. Once edited, you can then Export to whatever delivery medium you wish. DVD would be a good one, as you should be able to play DVD's for decades.
Nothing that you can do will be totally future-proof. Everything has a life expectancy, and it is logical that every format available today will not work in 15 years, unless you retain legacy equipment and software.
Since your material is not HD, by any definition, the only advantage to going H.264 and then to Blu-ray (with proper scaling, etc.) would be to have it available should DVD-Video suddenly die. While I do not think that this is likely, it IS possible. CD's are still going fairly strong, but the higher-def formats, SACD, etc., are pretty much dead, even if they offered better audio response. Right now, the market is going towards horribly compressed audio (MP3, etc.) for portability - the heck with quality, so even CD sales are sagging.
If you do undertake the process, I'd recommend purchasing a D-A interface, like the Canopus 300, and also a large external, or two.

  • How can I get my own home movies into the Video app in iOS 5

How can I get my own home movies to be visible in the Video app in iOS 5.
where do I place them and what format does iPhone want it to be in?
    thanks

Thanks for this info Johnathan, it answers part of my question about format.
I also want the videos I'm transfering to be visible in the "Video" app on my iPhone (I dont have an iPad, Yet. )
Right now, in order to see my videos I have to share iPhoto albums/etc.. from within iTunes. this mixes them up within the "Photo" app. Don't get me wrong, that is great, at least I can see them there in an album I made for "Home Movies". but I would like to know if there is a way to make them visible to the "Video" app which has catagories like "Podcast" & "Music Videos".
I'd lke to add a "Home Movies" catagory there and
Has anyone out there done this?
Ance again, thanks for the info

  • Compress dvd home movie into one vob?

I have created a home movie in imovie and then transferred it back to my camcorder and burned it onto a dvd. There are 5 vob files containing the entire movie. Is there any software to "join" all of the parts to upload to the internet?

    ladybug-1969 wrote:

sure, a vob for the menu, a vob for the autostart (even when empty), a vob for the first 20min of project..
vobs are part of the videoDVD standard, a delivery file .. no 'format' for further processing.
plus, any re-and-back-and-forth-conversion doesn't add any quality to your video, these formats are all lossy.
upload your iMovie (in case you use iM08/09, this is just a click away, Share).
or, export from within iM (vers. 6,5,4,...) in needed resolution... upload that.
but converting backwards from DVD?? is .. sorry .. nonsense.
esp. when it is a iMovie project AND the video exist on tape!
    import tape - upload.
ahh, and welcome ladybug 1969 to the  boards ..

  • How do I transfer a home movie to videos on my ipad?

There's obviously a simple answer to my problem, but I can't seem to find it. I made a home movie on my mac. I shared it with iTunes. I then looked for it in videos on my ipad. No sign of it. I found it among the photos and videos in the camera section. How to I get this home movie into my videos. Homesharing is on, but clearly hasn't solved the problem. Do I have to sync my ipad with itunes on my mac? Seems a bit complicated for such a simple task. After all, I can email it to my family without a problem. Anyone tell me what I'm missing?

Have you tried clicking the share icon when it is selected (the box with and arrow at the top) to see if you get an option to "open in..." and then select videos app.
I have not done this so not sure it will work but an idea to try.
