In a jam

Here is my situation.
Did updates and now when I start the computer it has an instant kernel panic. Takes about 7 or 8 seconds to crash. I have the 10.5.8 combo update on a flash drive and need to access the pkg file and install it while booting from the install disk. I tried this:
"/Volumes/Macintosh HD/usr/bin/open" \
/Applications/Utilities/Installer.app \
"/Volumes/Mac OS X 10.5.8 Update Combined/\
MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.pkg"
nothing happened. It said Macintosh HD does not exist. I now have this computer connected using a firewire to another and the HD is, in fact, named Macintosh HD.
Any way to get this update installed?

Although I don't like it, I had to do an upgrade install from the disk. It seemed to work fine, and at least it was the same OS. I wouldn't do this from Tiger to Leopard, but from Leopard to Leopard seemed to be okay. Everything is fine now, as far as I know. It wasn't my computer, and the friend who needed it hasn't complained so far. Thanks for your efforts.

  • HP Laserjet 1010 paper jam issue

I know this is not specifically an Apple problem, but I have spent days searching for a solution elsewhere with no luck, so I was wondering if anyone here could help?
My HP LaserJet 1010 had some issues with printed pages not coming right through - they jammed right at the last minute when most of the page was out.
After carefully removing the sheet, the paper jam light is constantly flashing, despite there being no paper in sight. No amount of resetting, cleaning etc has any effect. Neither do the rollers move any more when it is switched on, as they are supposed to.
When I try to print, the driver program gives the error:
"Printer Error: The printer needs attention"
Any ideas for how to solve this would be much appreciated.

Chances are the printer has a small bit of paper that is still jammed in it. When paper jams always try to pull in the direction of the paper path! If it tears then remove the toner cartridge to see if you can see any bits of paper inside. I have the Laserjet 1012 which is a similar design, early in it's life I had a similar issue, after removing the toner cartridge and seeing all bits of paper were gone I still got an error. I then removed the top cover of the printer, located and removed the offending piece of paper, put it back together and now several thousands of pages later all is fine.
If that doesn't work then contact HP's support (they will reply to an email with 24 hours) or go the chat route. If you try to call because you are well out of warranty there will be charge.

  • Jammed lock button and cracked screen!!! HELP PLEASE!!!

About three months after I bought my Ipod touch it fell off of my bed and cracked the screen entirely. I took it to Apple store and they said they couldn't replace it because it had no damage to the board and that it would cost $100 so I said screw it I can still read the screen. NOW I recently realized my lock/power button is jammed out of no where! I tried wiggling it with my nails, tapping it on the counter, and everything I could think of. I still have my warranty for another month or two. Can I get it replaced without charge? or what do I do? I really don't want to spend $100 bucks on this Ipod when every time I turn around something else happens. HELP please

Apple only exchanges the iPod for a refurbished one. Accidental damage like the broken screen voids the warranty on the entire iPod.

  • Can I run my HP Laptop without battery if it cannot be removed (mechanism battery access jammed)

I don't know if my first message got posted, so I apologize if this is a double post:
Hi. I have an HP Laptop from 2008. I had to replace the battery last year. Stupidly, I kept the Laptop plugged into A/C. The battery started losing power a week or so ago, losing 2-3 % daily. Today it is at 45%. Problem is-I cannot remove the battery-the mechanism allowing access to battery is now jammed. Is there anything I can do to preserve my Notebook? I should add I am somewhat new to technology (as of 2008) and middle-aged. Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Yes you can, the risk is w/o battery when having main (AC) problem specially losing power suddenly data on HDD may be corrupted.
    Regards.

    hi
you have to change the config.xml to allow the server accept relay mails from your host machine from which you are sendign the mail ...
    ie
    change
    <mailet match="RemoteAddrNotInNetwork=127.0.0.1" class="ToProcessor">
    <processor> relay-denied </processor>
<notice>550 - Requested action not taken: relaying denied</notice>
    </mailet>
add few more ips (your network / subnet ip)
so that it accpets mails from that machine to be relayed ...
you can also change the smtp autheriZation part and do that ...
    any one is enough ..
    Regards

  • HP D110 AIO printer. Prints jam when printing with wireless, but not when hooked to USB cable! HELP!

I have a HP D110. It jams the paper when I print with wireless, but not when I use USB cable. Any ideas?

From what you describe you are having issues printing from MS Office. Have you had trouble printing from other resources on your computer (e.g. from the internet or another program)? The first thing I am going to suggest is that we start by uninstalling and reinstalling the printer from the resources available online.
First if you use a USB cord, make sure to remove it (this is important). Do not plug it back in until the software directs you to. Then go through the Devices and Printers, Programs and Features and Device Manager folders and insure that all copies, files, and programs related to the printer are removed. Then as directed, restart the computer.
In the START menu type "%temp%" and press ENTER. Here I want you to press Ctrl+A and hit DELETE. Some of the files will not allow you to delete them, skip those files and delete the majority that allows it.

Install that and let me know the result!
    Have a great day!

  • I believe that a smaller-than-normal CD disk is jammed in my iMac disk slot. It does not show up on my desktop, so I cannot do a normal eject. Any thoughts on how to force an eject? Thanks.

Good idea about looking on YouTube for information on how to assault the internals of an iMac.
Fortunately, I won't need to do so. Got the disk out using a kludge. I turned off the machine, inserted a slender metal ruler into the disk slot and powered up. As hoped, the ruler triggered the regurgitate-the-disk function of the drive and the (full size) disk slid out.
Why take such a chance? Because the drive was useless with a jammed disk in it, and I figured there was a reasonable chance that my kludge would work. Probable worse case was that it would not and I'd be no worse off. There was the possibility I'd ruin the drive, but that did not seem probable, and it did not happen. I'm using it right now for a program installation.
If I did ruin the drive, I'd just continue using my $39 USB plug-in drive, as I had been doing while trying to figure out how to solve the problem. If I ever upgrade to a new iMac, I will have to use this or similar drive in any case, since the new iMac's come sans an internal superdrive. (I dislike that Apple decided to do away with the drive, but they didn't ask me.)
Anyhow, thanks for the response, and happy computing.

    Hi brett242424,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The movie would be in your iTunes library, in the Movies application.  However, if the rental period has expired, you may need to contact the iTunes Store Support about your situation:

  • Unable to change setings, was in Siri, got 'jammed'

This 'Senior' got jammed-up. Unable to change settings, settings unresponsive and am stuck in Siri. Problem happened IN SIRI, now can't change settings to even access the Siri option.
SETTINGS WON'T LET ME ACCESS OPTIONS 'below level of Wallpaper'.  Swipe won'r allow to go to any other screen in settings.
This happened in SIRI and I can't even disable 'turn-off' Siri
Unable to close applications on bottom of screen as well, as usually done.
The 'voice mode' is on, and that is what jammed everything up.
The only appications which show 'open on screen are' Messages,Phone, Settings and Safari, Mail, Music,  and I am prevented from 'closing them'.
I did a turn-off, began again with the apple logo but can't reset.
Can't get past the first screen in my apps.
I BELIEVE it is a SIRI problem but can't change settings other than 'Airplane Mode through Wallpaper.'
I bet there is someone who would help a 'Grandma'!
What on Earth IS wrong?!!! and how can I get 'out of it' without going to the Apple Store.
Tiny store ,International Record  as "Smallest Apple Store in the World", Santa Rosa, California..and they aren't much interested in giving-up that claim to fame!
it's usually like the 'final boarding of Noah's Ark in there" and NOT a fun place to be!!!

    User's Group,
Immediate help from randers4 got me 'back in business'. I would have not beieved I could have done this without a trip to the store and a distant appointment date.
Things seemed messed-up beyond my ability to affect any change!
Alone, this would not have been possible.  I feel I learned a great deal about the IOS 5 system's Siri quirks.
This is what it is all about.
People helping others who know less than they do!
Gratitude is such a small word,
this was monumental for me to have done even with the assistance of another person.

  • Installed Jam Pack but see no new loops in Garageband loop browser. Why not?

I successfully installed Jam Pack but don't see new loops in Garageband loop browser. Is there some extra step I'm supposed to do? Before, I had about 57 Rock/Blues loops, and I still have just that. I had 14 instruments under All Drums, and guess what? Still only 14.
I know the install completed successfully - it said so, anyway.
    Clues?

Have you filters set on the Loop Browser?  Make sure the GarageBand Preference "Loops > Keyword Browsing > Filter for more relevant content" is off.  Otherwise you will  see a fraction of the available loops.
To see, if the JamPack has been installed, set the pop-up meu at the top of the Loop Browser to "Rhythm Section". Is that available?
Did you reindex your Loops after installing the Jam Pack? And did you restart the Mac? In Mt. Lion only restarting a Mac will ensure, that an application is not resumed from a cache, when you launch it again.Restarting the Mac will terminate GarageBand for sure.
If restarting the Mac does not make the JamPack Loops show, rebuild the Loop index.  See:  Rebuilding the Loop Index in GarageBand 6 or earlier - Apple Support

  • Jam Pack 2 & 3 loops don't show in loop browser

When I add the Jam Pack 2 & 3 loops to the loop browser, they do not appear-how can I get the loops to show up ?

Here's the method to reindex I was given at another forum (worked for me):
    1-Open the loop browser
2-Search for a default apple loop (for exemple 70s ballad drums 01).
3-Search the "70s ballad drums 01.aif" file in your finder. It should be in "HD-Library-Audio-Apple Loops-Apple-Apple Loops for GarageBand".
4-Drag the "70s balla drum 01.aif" file to your desktop.
5-In the Logic Loop browser, select the "70s Ballad Drums 01" loop.
6-Logic will tell you it can't find the file and ask you if you want to re-index all your appleloops.
7-Go back to your finder and, replace the file to it's original folder.
8-Click on "Reindex Loops" in your Logic loop browser.

  • Jam Packs and "Garageband Instruments" when reinstalling Logic?

What's the proper procedure when it comes to Jam Packs and 3rd party Apple Loops libraries when reinstalling Logic and OS X?
I'm keeping my Apple Loops on a separate drive and know that I can just drag them to the Loop Browser after reinstalling Logic. However, by doing so, I don't think I'll be getting the "Garageband Instruments" that are installed with the Jam Packs and some 3rd party Apple Loops libraries. Is that correct? If so, what's the best way to deal with this? Always installing all Apple Loops from the disks or perhaps saving a folder (which one?) with the Garageband Instruments before re-installing OS X?
When I last installed Logic, and told the installer to install the Jam Packs on an external drive, they were still installed on the system drive! Does anyone know why? Now what's the best way to move the Apple Loops? What I've done in the past is installing them to their default location, and then creating an alias in Home:Library:Audio:Apple Loops folder that points to the new location on the external drive. Is that the way to go or is another way better?
Any input or help would be greatly appreciated.

Jam packs consist of two types of content. Loop content will go to where you choose to install it (an external drive if you wish). Instrument content has to go to the GB library, for a number of reasons, and the GB library will be on your system disk under Application Support/Garageband.
So backup your GB library in addition to your Logic related stuff.
It is possible to move much (but not all) of the heavy Instrument content to an external drive too, but there are gotchas with this.

  • Can't see Jam Pack Loops in Logic Studio Browser

I have searched many other forums but can't find the same problem. Usually it relates to a separate disk for loops.
I have Garageband and 4 Jam packs installed on my computer (Dual G5 latest OSX up to date). Jam pack 1, Rhythm Section, Symphony Orchestra and something else... anyway I purchased Logic Studio (8) and installed that. During installation I noticed that it detected that I already had some of the Jam Pack loops on my drive so they were "unchecked" automatically and therefore didn't install. Now when I look in the loop browser only the Jam Packs that Logic did install are viewable in my loop browser. Yet the other jam packs are indeed viewable in Garageband. All of this is installed on a single internal drive that is the system drive (500GB) by the way. So I dragged the Jam Pack folders to the logic loop browser and it appeared to be adding the loops, but they are still not visible there.
Also, there is no dialogue box that appears to ask if I want to copy them or leave in current location as many other users have said it should ask. maybe that's because it's all on one drive though.
The other concern is that I wonder if the software instruments that come with the jam packs would be installed/available in Logic? Surely not, if I am just adding the loops to the browser. How do I ensure that I have access to all of the loops and all of the software instruments?
Can anyone please help with this, it would be much appreciated.

    Hi Jaffles,
The best thing to doo is go to the various "Apple Loops Index" folders, remove all the index files that are in there and then reindex your loops by dragging them into the loop Browser. The index files will then be rebuilt.
    regards, Erik.

  • Jam packs showing in finder but not in loop browser

Hi, i've got all the jam packs installed and showing up in the library under the audio folder but they do not show in the loops browser of Logic 9.1.3. Does anybody have an idea on how I can get them to "sync"up with the loop browser or import them into the program. Thanks much.

I'm having a similar issue, but with gigs of new sample libraries. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2696089&tstart=0
