In a less than perfect world !!!!

I read the BB forums regularly and have had reason to use them in the past myself.
Here is a ray of sunshine on an rainy horizon for BT
I upgraded my BB from ADSL2 to 21CN on 5/5/11.  I got a text on my mobile at work telling me that the the upgrade was complete.
I arrived home to check things out and had a bit of a disappointment when I saw that the H/Hub had not upgraded to the  ITU-T G 992.5.
Remembering all that I had read on the Forums I left well alone and told my Errant 17yr old daughter not to touch the H/Hub on pain of Death. It was worth it as at 6pm ping the  H/Hub reset itself to the desired ITU-T G 992.5.
One BT speed test later confirmed all was well on the connection but the Bras (IP line profile) was set to 7000kbps. No matter we are in the line training mode for a few days I thought.
So all was left alone still and I  completed speed tests  morning and evening and nothing moved for a day or two.
This morning I carried out the speed test and Bingo. Connection speed now up to 17139kbps down and 1197kbps up and achieving speeds in exess of 1500kbps down and 850kbps up.
The moral of the tale is
A: Read the forums and act on the advice given ( Its usually pretty sound and well informed) and
B: BT sometimes get it right so thank you to all ( IMJolly in particular for his constant advice on the forums)  for a smooth transition to 21CN

I feel your pain. Initially on joining BT onADSL2 I had the usual phone calls to India / engineer visits etc for a good few weeks to get things sorted.
My problem was eventually sorted by an Engineer who fitted a new socket, disconnected the bell wire then fitted some sort of plate at the master socket that stopped thebroadband at that socket, thus eliminating and wiring / noise from the rest of the house. Result was a steady 6500kbps at any time of day for the last year. mind you it does help living only a couple of hundred yards from the exchange.

  • Burners that are more "aggressive" reading less than perfect discs

Has anyone had experience with having to duplicate and work with originals provided by clients that are hard for the dvd drives to recognize properly when you try to make copies? I'm talking about non copy protected - industrials provided to me from varied dvd burners "in the field". Mostly different construction related specialty work. These dvd "masters" are created by feeding a camera's output to a consumer dvd/vhs combo recorder. Most of the dvd's I get are fine, but occasionally my drives "choke" on the originals. The discs are clean (no scratches) and the brand of blank does not seem to matter. I have purchased software that is supposed to have superior error correction properties and it doesn't really help.
I'm thinking that folks in this forum might have experience with hardware solutions that might help this situation.
    TIA,
    Pete D

    Pete,
It used to happen more in the past than it does now, but this just happened to me last week. A client broat over a DVD which would not read in all 3 of my Macs no matter what drive I used. It also only played in 2 of my multiple set top players. It eventually played and mounted in my "home" PC of all things. Having a few different brand drives ready to read the discs and a few extra computers around helps.

  • Less than perfect sound from my Zen

I have been reading alot of these threads and everybody says how great and perfect their Zen sounds. Maybe i'm a little picky, but i find that mine lacks a little in the higher frequencies. I know the specs say 7,000hz to
    ps.
I have played with all the different EQ's, and made my own, but still find it a little short on the higher frequencies. If it wasn't for that, it would sound perfect.
Could a different set of earbuds or headphones make up a little of that sound i'm looking for? Or what can i try?

' It's all relati've, and relati've to other popular players the Zen scores well in terms of response. But that said, a decent set of headphones or in-ear monitors will make all the difference for the lot of them. Ultimately the speakers are the most significant factor to how any audio equipment sounds.

  • Netrestore 10.6.8 fails in less than a minute

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!
First off i have started completley from scratch with 10.6.8 and i'm using SIU.
My goal is to have a netrestore image that i can use ARD to point x amount of computers to that network image and restore a whole lab in one move.
my workflow in SIU is as follows
1.define image source, this is my perfect machine (macbook hd with 10.6.8)
2.Format disk, formats the disk regardless of what it is named and rename as "Macintosh HD"
3.enable automated installation on volume named "Macintosh HD"
    4.create netrestore image
My test mac can find the image on the network, boot and reformat but it won't restore the image. it fails in less than a minute. this was the same in 10.6.7 too.
I can provide more details if needed but does anybody out there have any idea what i may be doing wrong?
    Thank you!

My answer is probably not what you're looking for, but that hasn't stopped me yet ;-)
I used the Apple imaging tools for years, sometimes without a hitch, sometimes successfully after searching these forums for tips becasue the tools didn't work straightforward, and sometimes with no luck. 2 or 3 years ago we hired a consultant to help out with imaging. They went right to DeployStudio. I've not touched Apple's imaging tools since.
DeployStudion's documentation is great, there is a good firum at their web site, and I've found the process to be much more stable than any version of Apple's tools. Once it is set up and running, adding new images and workflows is a breeze, and it is easily configurable. I highly reccomend it. YMMV.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 stops working after less than 30 second and shuts down

I have installed and uninstalled Photoshop CC 2014 three or four times via Creative Cloud and each time it stops working after less than thirty seconds and shuts down the program. I then installed a an older version of Photoshop CS5.1 from a CD and it works perfect. I also have Illustrator CC 2014 and Lightroom 5 installed from Creative Cloud and both work flawlessly. What can I do to get Photoshop CC 2014 working?

You have not provided any system information or crash logs, so we can't really know.

  • Less than 5 hours New Macbook Pro

I thought the new 15 inch Macbook Pro was supposed to do something around 8-9 hours of battery. I am getting less than 5 with mild use (internet browsing, hulu). Is anyone else having this problem? Should I call Apple about this?

    Hey!
Also- we have to be careful with the new graphics chips. In theory they're great, and I really like the idea, but it will take a while to get the sweet spot right. The new graphics chip will cut that time considerably, because its still pretty hungry for power. If you want to find out which of your applications fire up the 330M then you (as far as I know) have to open system profiler, then go to Graphics/Displays and then see whether Intel HD or the 330M as 'colour LCD' listed at the displays section at the bottom.
Open a program and then hit apple and R in the system profile window, if the colour LCD isnt in the Intel HD graphics box, that means that the faster graphics chip has been activated. This is an issue, because I hadn't realised, for example, that skype uses some of the 'advanced APIs' which make the new graphics card chip in. So as soon as you open skype (you dont even have to log in) your machine will continue to run off the more power-hungry 330M until you close it.
What I find interesting is that it seems only to look at the program and not at how many resources its pulling. For example, i've fired up so many HD steams in safari that my machine has been unable to process them all. Yet still it hasn't switched over to the 330M in that instance because 'safari' doesnt call for the advanced graphics APIs.
So far the ways i've managed to trigger constant reliance on the 330: (I can only speak for me 2.53)
    -connecting an external monitor
    -skype
    -iPhoto
    -Photobooth
    -Garageband
    -iMovie
Programs which do not exhibit this behaviour include:
-Safari (so far havent been able to trigger 330M at all)
-iTunes (even when using the visualiser hasn't triggered)
-iChat (doesnt trigger unless your webcam is engaged for a call or whatever)
    -Mail
    -iCal
    -Spotify
-Quicktime (only engages the 330M when videos are loaded, not when program is merely open but not doing anything)
-VLC (only when playing videos- just as quicktime)
So basically- just check out what's running on your system. Skype seems to be glaring issue for me at the moment. Everything else is using the 330M conservatively, whereas skype, which im sure doesn't need the power of the 330M at all times, makes it continually run, which will bring down your battery life.
I'm sure this will easily be fixed -probably from skype themselves rather than apple, but that is merely speculative. For now I just wished there was some utility we could use or keep in the system tray or dashboard which would tell us which graphics card is running. Even some mention in activity monitor would be great..
Running the screen at 65% brightness and with the energy saving settings at default, my macbook pro has got about 7 hours out of it.
Flash-rich websites, javascript and unnecessary processor cycles will all contribute towards a real-world reduction of battery life. And the glossiness of the screen really doesn't help either.. haha...

  • Previewing HSL & Sharpening at less than 100% on Canon 1Ds MKI

Hi, I'm new here and checked the archive for this topic with no luck.
I am experiencing a degraded preview when adjusting the parameters for HSL and Sharpen/Noise tabs in ACR 4.3.1. The adjustments appear to have a grainy artifact at 66% and less but then perfectly smooth at 100% and more. Other adjustments seem fine- exposure, white balance, etc.
I thought this might be by design at first, but this only occurs with .raw images from my 1Ds Mk1. I tried opening a few Tiff's in ACR and can't recreate the artifact.
I can live without seeing accurate sharpening at less than 100%(I usually sharpen later, anyways), but making adjustments to the luminance in HSL would require seeing more of the image to make a good judgment.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks,
    CLD

    > It has been well-documented in articles on the Internet, in white papers, in online tutorials, and in books about ACR that you need to be viewing your images at at least 100% in order to accurately evaluate clarity, noise reduction and sharpening.
I believe the OP conceded that, but thought that HSL adjustments needed to be evaluated within the context of the larger picture(?)
[Caveat: I'm not yet a user of ACR4, but to my mind HSL adjustments involve color and tone, do they not? ... Or, is the OP wrong regarding not being able to see HSL changes at <100%?]

  • CS4 impage display problem at zooms less than 200%

I upgraded from CS1 to CS4 yesterday and immediately encountered a problem with the way Photoshop (not Bridge) displays images to the monitor. At zooms of less than 200%, the image that appears is divided into squares in which the correct picture is displayed below each square's diagonal and solid vertical lines of color are displayed above the diagonal. I've checked jpeg, tiff, and psd files. At 200% or higher, everything is fine. This problem does not happened in CS1.
Has anyone seen this problem before?
    Dell XPS 420
    ATI Radeon HD 2600XT
(I checked and the driver is up to date)

Open GL takes a lot of video horsepower, but even high end video cards don't always work perfectly. There may be more than one thing going there. Adobe is still working on problem. But if you have low end card it will probably never work as PS intended.
Read the posts on lag problems and which cards are recommended to work with CS4.

  • Can a topic title contain angle brackets (greater than / less than)?

Using RoboHelp 8, WebHelp output generated via rhcl and displayed in modified Internet Explorer (IE).
One of my colleagues is creating a topic to describe an application object that has angle brackets (greater than / less than signs) in its screen name. Needless to say, RoboHelp doesn't like those symbols in the topic title, and it hides them and the text between them in the generated topic title. Steps to reproduce: Typed < and > in the Properties dialog; topic's <title> meta tag shows &lt; and &gt; .
Other than replacing the topic title field with static text, is there a way to push these symbols through the Properties dialog or the HTML editor?
It's not world-shatteringly important - the workaround is okay - but I'd like to know how to avoid this problem with other "special" characters, if I can.
    Thanks,
    Elisa

Willam is correct that you cannot type < or > directly into the HTML code and in pointing out that RoboHelp automatically converts the code when you type that in design view.
However, I think that you are aware of that and it is not the problem you want addressed. You can see that you can type that straight into the Topic Heading but your Topic Headings are not typed in, you are using fields and what you are finding is that if the Topic Title contains the brackets, that works everywhere other than Topic Headings. Is that correct?
If so the cause is linked to what Willam has pointed out but I am sure Adobe could work out a solution. Report it as a bug. Please follow this link.

  • User input formula variable with greater than/less than operators for KFG

    Hello all,
I have used a formula in my query that is a difference of two key figures .For e.g:
Difference = tax from system A  -  tax from system B.
Now when the users run the report they should be prompted for the 'Difference' threshold for seeing the report say where difference is greater 100 or equal to 10 and so on.Currrently I have created a formula variable with 'user input' and created a 'condition' to display 'Difference' greater than the user entered value.
However,it is required to have various selection options for setting the threshold of difference. For e.g User should be able to set say 'equal to'/'greater than/less than/not equal to operator for 'difference' in the initial selection screen of the report.
With the current user-input formula variable I am not getting these 'greater than' etc operators.Any ideas on how to achieve this?

Ya know, that's all well and good ... BUT ... WHAT IF you do want to sort text type columns with Greater Than and Less Than operatiors??
SQL does it just Fine ... so WHY does APEX have the limit??? This is an Oracle BUG ... it SHOULD NOT limit the operators ... I realize "they" may be trying to be helpful with proper constraints to field searches ... but ... if SQL can do it, then ... no need for a limit.
    EG ...
    Show the records where
the "Begin_Year-Wk" data is less than or equal to "2009-09" AND
the "End_Year-Wk" data is greater than or equal to "2009-04"
... to give everything that was running in that 5 week period whether or not it starts within that time frame
I can run this query perfectly fine via SQL ... but not in APEX ... unless I reconvert a lot of strings back to numbers, and for sorting / formatting / explain-to-user purposes, I really don't want them to be numbers.
So ... there's gotta be a hidden tweak for operators somewhere ...

  • Filtering Interactive Reports with Greater Than Less Than Operators

The available filter operators in the interactive reports do not include greater than or less than. How is it possible to enable an application user to filter records where greater than or less then logic is needed?
For example the user wants to query records where sysdate falls between a start and end date.

We believe this is a bug inthe Font Validator, and have reported it to Microsoft. There are perfectly good reasons to have automatic subscript to shift stuff to the left with an italic font.

Don't know why, but the "maximum heap size: 267380736 bytes" value is just slightly less than 256*1024*1024, wheras the reported initial size is equal to that.
Try setting the initial value to 255MB.
