In a Smart Group in AddressBook 6.1, how do I designate which email addresses I want to use?

In a Smart Group in AddressBook 6.1, how do I designate which email address I want to use for contacts who have more than one address when I'm mailing to the whole group? The "Edit Distribution List" is grayed out.

Thanks, Barney, but that's not really my question. The "Edit Distribution List" is in the Edit menu on my version, too, but I can't use it to edit the email addresses of contacts who are in Smart Groups. In the version of AddressBook I was using before I bought a new MacBook Pro and upgraded to Mac OSX Lion, I could use the "Edit Distribution List" to pick which email address I wanted to use for contacts in Smart Groups with more than one address. Apparently that isn't an option in Lion. The Help menus for AddressBook 6.1 even say that "Edit Distribution Lists" doesn't work for Smart Groups.
Okay. I get that. But some of my contacts have more than one email address, so how do I choose which email address I want Mail to use for these contacts when I send an email to a Smart Group they're in?

  • How do you specify which email address to use in a group list?

    Hi All,
I've got several group lists created in Address Book. When I want to send an email to a group using Mail I cannot specify which email address gets used for a person that has multiple addresses in Address Book.
My process is as follows: create a new blank message, address the note to myself, move to the bcc field, click the "Address" button at the top of the message pane. When I click on a name that has multiple email addresses I can click on the one that I want, but when I click to another name and click back the previously selected address is highlighted again. It seems that the selection of the address won't 'stick'. Is there any way to force the selection? Also, I originally thought that the group list defaulted to the home address, but I noticed that some entries have their work address selected by default.
    Thanks for any help.
    -Chris

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I knew there was an option to do that somewhere. For some reason I had it in my mind that you made those selections in Mail.

Open Address Book and select a group. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the group and select Edit Distribution List. You may then scan through the group members selecting the desired email address for each one with multiple addresses.

  • Contacts: Specify which email address to use in Contact Group?

I have a few mailing lists that I keep in Contacts. However, I have multiple email addresses for some of these contacts. When I send an email to the list, the wrong email address will be used for some of the contacts.  Is it possible to specify a default email address for a contact? Or a way to specify which email address of a contact should be used for each Contact group?
    Thanks!

    Yes.
So select the group in Contacts. Then choose Edit->Edit Distribution List... and you can pick which of the emails you want to use for the group in question.
It took me a while to find it, but I've done it before so I managed to turn it up

  • Controlling which email address is used for group members?

    Howdy Folks,
Is there a way to control which email address is used for contacts that you have put into a group in Address Book?
For example, say John Smith is a member of an Address Book group I have created. John's Address Book entry contains two email addresses for him, one for work and one for home.
When I send an email to the group I want to have it sent to John's work email address.
I have experimented by editing the entry and making sure the desired address is the first one listed for the individual in question, but that doesn't do the trick.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

Launch Address Book, choose Help > Address Book Help and type "group addresses" in the search box. Read the article titled "Selecting which addresses to use for members of a group". Does that solve your problem?

  • Creating smart groups in Addressbook

Ok maybe I am missing something obvious
I want to create a smart group that contains other groups
    say I have three groups
    1. aaa
    2. bbb
    1. ccc
I want to create a smart group that contains all groups whos group name starts with 1.
I only seem to be able to filter on addresbook items such as address
    Any ideas
    thanks

Smart Groups are only as smart as the fields contained in their vcards. While there is no way for a smart group to tell whether or not your friends received and Xmas letter, a simple note in each vcard (or even a symbol: %, /, #, etc) would allow you to create a smart group where all cards who, in the 'notes' field carried a symbol would then be added to the smart group of friends who did not received xmas email letters.

  • How do I add multiple email addresses for a contact to a group?

(I'm a recent convert from eMailer to Outlook Express, to Entourage, and finally to Mail.app)
I'm trying to set up a group in Address Book that includes multiple email addresses from a given card. These are folks that want me to include, for example, both their work and home email addresses when I send to this particular group.
I see that Address Book has the ability to use "Edit Distribution List..." to select one email address for a given card/contact, but I can't get it to allow me to use two or three for a given card.
I suppose for now I can just create a duplicate card, and pick one address from each.
    Is there a better way?

Sorry, but Address Book does not allow you to select more than one email address to send to in a group. There's really no reason why people need multiple copies of a message, anyway; they have the option of forwarding email to another email address of theirs.

  • How To Change Order of Email Addresses in Address Book / groups / Mail?

Many records in my address book have multiple email addresses.
No big deal but I wonder if there is a way to tell Address Book / Mail which address to pick as the default.
For example I send a litttle news email one a week to a group of contacts.  I want to send this email to people's personal -- not business -- email address.  I've created a group in Address Book and type that group name in my Mail to line and the group pops up.  But a few of the records pick the corporate address and I have to go in and change those addresses.
I just tried editing one record ... I deleted both "work" and "home" addresses from a record.  Then reentered them "home" first, "work" second.  But when I closed the edit Address Book listed them in the original order (maybe alpha).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • How can I get one email address in an address group to sort first in mail?

I have a group with about 100 contacts.  Mail sorts these contacts in a way I can not fathom.  I would like one of the contacts to appear "first" in the list of Mail addressees.  I've tried starting the contact name an "A" and a "1".  I've tried starting the email name and isp name the same way.  Each time, the contact appears in a different place in the Mail address list but never first.  Thanks

Sorry, I just found a similar question which was answered by VK as:
"I'm not sure what Mail uses to determine the order the emails are listed when you do this. It may be related to the internal UIDs address book assigns to all contacts. those are assigned in the order the contacts were added to Address Book. this is not terribly useful."
VK proceeded to offer a software technique for resorting addressees which I could not understand.
    It looks like I'm stuck.
There's another question I ask every time I'm in an Apple store, "why not list the groups associated with each contact in the lower right box of each contact; next to the latest revision date.  So easy and so useful.  I never get a good answer.
Generally, I find Apple programmers the best in the world for making things intuitive.  Not so with Mail... :-(

  • How do I choose a specific email address for a person in a group?

I want to create a group in my address book. Several of the people in the group have 3 or more email addresses. How do I specify which email for a person is used when I send an email to the group?

Create the group. Drag in the folks you want to include in the group. Right click on the group and choose "Edit Distribution List" and a window will pop up showing which addresses are selected in bold, and those that are not selected in plain text. Just click on the emails you want to use and it switches the selected address.

  • How to add individual email addresses to a new group?

My Address Book contains more than one email address for some of my contacts. When I add such a contact to a new group, I would like to specify which email address to use; but I can't find a way to do that. The message goes out to all of the contact's email addresses.
I could, of course, create separate cards for each of a contact's email addresses, but that solution would be worse than the problem I'm trying to solve. Any suggestions?

Select the group, then *Edit > Edit Distribution List...*. Select the email address you want to use for each member of the group.

  • Need to view individual email addresses in a ldap email group

Have netscape 7.0 clients that are sending email using email groups created in a Sun 5.2 ldap directory server. I have some folks that need to be able to view the list of individual email addresses in these groups. Can,t seem to view the individual email addresses from within Netscape 7.0, but I recall having this ability with netscape 4.7. Any way to view this information?

Select the group, then *Edit > Edit Distribution List...*. Select the email address you want to use for each member of the group.

  • Sync Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes across network

Is there a way to Sync my Smart Groups in Addressbook and Smart Mailboxes in Mac Mail across my Macbook and My iMac? I have iCloud.
It would be nice if I did not have to duplicate these "Smart" groups on each computer.
    Thanks Mac Community.

Can you just type out the criteria of the smart group, or post a screen shot of the smart group.
With all the editorializing, I can't figure out what you want to do.
Where are the contacts in the groups, iCloud or On My Mac?

  • Smart Group from a selection in Address Book.

In Address Book, is there any way to create a smart group from a selection or an existing group? It seems that a smart group can only be created from "All Contacts". But I don't want to start with "All Contacts" for my smart group, just an existing group.  You can do "New Group From Selection", but you can't seem to do "New Smart Group From Selection".  Is there any way around this?

You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Images and Control-click on each file and open it using Preview. Then you can export the image if you choose. Just keep in mind that these will be thumbnail quality, so don't expect large images, either in file size or physical size.

  • Since installing Maveric I have not been able to enter my smart groups as addressees in email  Any suggestions why?

I have just installed OS XMavericks and since installation have not been able to select smart groups to send emails to.  Any ideas why?  Also I suddenly can't italicise or embolden text in an email.
    Bunnyfw

You have to manually select the addresses from the smart group for the To: button to enable in the Window menu -> Address Panel window.   You can't just select the Smart group icon alone.
As for italics and embolden, those are non-standard formats that only work when e-mailing people with certain e-mail clients.  Mail menu -> Preferences -> Composing lets you choose message format as Rich Text or Plain Text.  Only Rich Text enables italics and embolden.   Responding using the same format as original will enable that if the original had bold or italic.  Everyone supports plain text.
