Brought my ipod with me. Now I have a new laptop and all my photos are on my old ipod. How do I get them onto my new laptop? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE.

nnn:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You should post your question in the appropriate iPod for Windows forum. This is the iPhoto forum, the Mac only image management application. They will know of 3rd party applications that can upload your photos from the iPod to your labtop. Good luck and stay safe.

  • How can I get Apple to send me the OSX10.7 disc? I'm deployed to Afghanistan and need to reinstall my OS but the internet is too slow.

Does Apple have an email address for support questions?

    Try:
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
The problem will be if Apple will ship anything to Afghanistan. You are better off trying to download it.

  • Looking for a white hat; iPhone 4 stolen while in Afghanistan

For my 21st anniversary of military service my wife got me an iPhone 4 on the release date. Life was good! 6 weeks after getting my new toy I was on a plane for Afghanistan. Life wasn't so good. Anyway, who am I to complain since I raised my right hand. When I arrived at a major base awaiting my assignment I was given orders to a real **** hole. I'm not talking a normal Afghanistan hole but one of those places where when people in Afghanistan find out where you're going they tell you how sorry they are.
After travelling to my hole which was going to be home for the next year we finally ended up on a major base for a day of rest. Let me tell you…8 days of travel without much rest, little food, and no showers isn’t conducive to good hygiene. No wonder I got so many dirty looks. Anyway, it was very warm when we arrived and the sewage pond was in full force. My buddy threw up 15 minutes after getting off the bird the smell was so bad. Since I have the stomach of a billy goat I was alright but I wasn't happy.
We were told to get a few hours of rest since our flight was going to leave in 12 hours. The tent they put us in was B.O. city. There were a few hundred guys who stunk worse than me all crammed into this tent full of bunk beds. To top it off the air conditioner was busted in the middle of August. Great, at least it was just 12 hours as we passed through. When I laid down I realized my bed was something magicians would use as a torture test. The springs could have supported a tank as they pushed into my back. Somehow through all of that I managed to doze off for a bit before the first rocket hit. My buddies went for cover but I was so mad the Taliban had the audacity to shoot at me I just laid there and hoped they were bad shots. Luckily they had a terrible aim but they did manage to hit the poop pond. The sewage pond caught on fire due to the impact and the fact a few hundred gallons of diesel had managed to spill into the pond. Now my tent smelled like B.O., diesel, and burning crap. It couldn’t get any worse I thought.
My aforementioned buddies who went shrieking like little girls after the first rocket were by now in the fetal position. One of the guys wasn’t so lucky though; when he took off for cover he tripped on a pair of boots and went headfirst into a bed frame. He was out cold. What a noob. Everyone acts different the first time they get shot at but come on, show some respect. Luckily a Navy Corpsman was in our tent and he stitched him up in a jiffy…just a gash on the forehead. Just FYI, the guy who hit his head is a d-bag and will probably morph the story into him chasing Bin Laden across the desert with nothing but a plastic spork while riding a uni-cycle. If you see a YouTube video of a guy who looks like Goober and talks like Snooki detailing his exploits while chasing 10,000 Taliban you’ll know it’s him.
That’s when it happened. While I was taking care of my troop who was gunning for a Purple Heart someone decided to take my iPhone 4 out of my backpack (he will be referred to as d-bag #2 from here on out). D-bag #2 went past the dirty underwear and half eaten MRE cookie and snagged my phone. I’m guessing he watched me put it in there. I didn’t know it at the time because I was trying to get some rest. Here’s a tip for travelers: Always take a travel pillow and sheets wherever you go. My mattress was not only hard with springs out of a ’47 Edsel but it looked like it was used in 5000 **** movies. Every bodily fluid imaginable was present and clearly displayed. Somewhere Charlie Sheen is missing a mattress.
We finally got on a plane out of there a few hours later and started our journey to hells half acre. I opened my backpack which had never left my side except while tending to the previously discussed d-bag #1 and found nothing in my iPhone case. I put it in that case just 6 hours previous. After a frantic search of my surroundings I realized it was gone.
After another 4 days of travel with even less sleep and worse food I finally managed to make it to my little corner of ****. The first thing I did was call my wife to let her know I made it safe. When she picked up the phone she started crying, cussing, and yelling at me. The person who took my phone sent my wife a text message. The message appeared like it came from me and said I’d been shot and was dying. Now the first thing that should have gone through my mind was for me to console my wife. Sadly it wasn’t. Since I was in the middle of Afghanistan with NO cell coverage the only plausible way a text message could have been sent was by someone hitting a hotspot and using the text app I’d downloaded. I was more ****** he knew where a hotspot was and didn’t pass the info than anything else! After getting back on “husband track” I calmed her down and told her to call AT&T and report the phone stolen. This happened in August BTW which was before I was introduced to Mobile Me. Also, the only tracking apps I had were things the bad guy would have had to open up.
Now I was really mad. My phone was stolen, my wife was afraid for my life and couldn’t get in touch with me, and I had no way to play Angry Birds. Afghanistan does have some cell service BTW and AT&T was gracious enough to unlock the phone three days prior to d-bag #2 relieving me of my possession. Let’s be honest here and admit we all need our phones. I’m different in that I really NEEDED my phone. I suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury 2 years earlier and needed the games designed to stimulate neural activity (no, we’re not talking Pac Man even though I do think Ms. Pac Man is really cute). No, I needed my phone because I had apps designed to help people with brain injuries.
In order to fix the situation I tried to call Apple but they conveniently don’t list Steve Job’s phone number (or any other number for that matter). I even looked up the designers of the iPhone on Facebook and sent them messages. For some reason they never answered. Since I’m a little older I figured I’d try the old fashioned way and sent personal letters to half of Apple’s top management. They KNOW where my iPhone is. It would take a few seconds to look up my IMEI and serial number.
Figuring I’d never get a response from Apple (figured correctly) I had my wife shell out $800 for another iPhone 4 and had her ship it to me. I even had her send it in an expensive Pelican case that cost me $100. Somewhere between the post office in my town and middle of nowhere Afghanistan the box with my new iPhone 4went missing. FML. I waited 3 months for it and it never found its way to me. I was working with USPS since my wife insured the box but that’s another story.
Ok, here’s where I’m hoping someone can help. Since I am in the middle of nowhere Afghanistan I can’t get a police report. The police department in my hometown said they are too busy to help and even if they could they would need some kind of report from Afghanistan. I’m thinking the donuts are laced with weed in my hometown. The local Afghani’s tend their herds, grow huge amounts of pot, enjoy man love Thursday, and kill Americans (not necessarily in that order). They don’t do police reports for missing iPhones. Most have never even heard of a phone. The military can’t do anything because they’re too busy putting warheads on foreheads.
I have in my possession a case without a phone. I also have an IMEI number and a serial number. I can also produce a screen shot of my iTunes showing my IMEI as well as a text file with all of the info proving it’s mine. I need a white hat or disgruntled AT&T employee to help me out. I just want to know where my phone is. I’m in Afghanistan for the next 8 months so I’m not going to hunt anyone down. I would just like someone to tell me what town it’s in. I’ll then call the police department of that town and coordinate further communications between everyone. I don’t want to press charges. I just want my phone case to be full again.

Really sorry to hear about this, particularly when you're putting your life on the line. But Apple cannot track your iPhone in any way unless you had set up Find My iPhone prior to it being lifted.
It's possible that AT&T might be able to do something, but it's probably that they cannot track it, or will not without a request from an authorized law enforcement agency, but rather would only disable the device. You'll have to try and find a way to contact AT&T directly and ask if they can do anything to help you; the chances of any AT&T employee in a position to help you spotting this thread it pretty small.
Good luck, stay safe, and come home soon.
    Regards.

  • In Afghanistan - phone has never been jailbroken. Was updating iTunes when message said phone had to be restored. When tried to restore phone goes process then at very end i get error code "-1".

This is my first iPhone. It's an iPhone 4, purchased the end of June 2012 through Sprint. I deployed to Afghanistan September 1st and have only used the phone for the camera, alarm clock, flashlight, etc. since deploying. I traveled to Germany a few days ago and have WiFi access. As soon as I connected, both my MacBook and iPhone had software updates available. When I attempted to update my iPhone I received a message saying there wasn't enough space available for the update. I removed all music from the phone and successfully installed the update.
I opened iTunes in order to sync my music back to the phone and recieved a notification that an iTunes update was available for the phone. I downloaded the update. Then I received a notification that the phone would need to be restored before it could be used with iTunes. I clicked "okay" then "restore iTunes". It then went through a series of restoration steps (extracting software, verifying, preparing and restoring iPhone software) before it verifies then shows that it is restoring iPhone firmware. At the very end an error message comes up "The iPhone could not be restore. An unknown error occurred (-1).
I read about this same error code in this community and all the answers say there is no help because that error code indicates the phone has been jailbroken. My phone has never been jailbroken.
I have been without my multi-tool since the day I stepped foot in Germany. I will be returning to Afghanistan in a few days and won't be stateside until April or May. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!

Error -1 indicates a hardware issue with the device.

  • Soldier in Afghanistan needs help with MBPro display problem

My son is in the Army Infantry (Airborne). His unit is currently stationed in southern Afghanistan on a small Combat Outpost (COP), where he will be for about 8 more months. He has had a MBPro since mid-2008, and his AppleCare Extended warranty is still in affect. This is his description of the state of his MBPro:
"hey dad, an update. I got the mac to boot using PRM reset. Now, it makes the boot noise and the keyboard lights up but the LCD screen still wont come up. From my online research it seems my nvidia graphics card has gone out. Something which can be repaired cheaply at an apple store. However, i have no way to mail back my computer and the repair involves tearing apart the logic board to replace the video card."
I called Apple and was told Apple must receive the laptop stateside. As my son said, it is impossible for him, a lowly Specialist, to ship anything home. The guys in his unit are resourceful, and they do have the tools needed to attempt repairs (spuds, etc.). However, we would have to get a replacement logic board to him (at our expense), and we've looked at www.ifixit.com and found the tutorial for replacing a logic board. I personally would never attempt such a repair, even though I have myself replaced a hard drive in my PB and the power port in my wife's laptop. The logic board is WAY under everything else, and the chances of a screw-up are great. And, of course, the Apple warranty would be voided.
Does anyone have enough experience with logic board repairs to say they SHOULD attempt the repair on site? OR, is there anyone in the military who can suggest a way to actually get this Apple "brick" stateside for repair under the warranty?

To be fair to Apple, their warranty does state that the need for a repair/replacement must be shown to be necessary to their satisfaction. That means they have to have the MBPro in their hands to examine it. At this time, we cannot prove that the Nvidia card on the LB has failed. Over the 20+ years I've used Apple computers, they've been very good at honoring their warranties. It's not Apple's fault that my son is in a rather faraway place. How many other high tech companies do you know of who have coverage arrangements in this kind of situation? We're not expecting Apple to do anything more for us right now. If we can get the MBPro stateside, I'm sure Apple will treat us well.
As for a cheap PC laptop, well, that probably wouldn't be a good solution, either. My son is a gamer and uses Windows on the MBPro only for games not available under OS X. The MBPro is an OK, but not great, PC game laptop. However, a cheap PC laptop would probably be WORSE for gaming, so it wouldn't be a good buy. An expensive gamer PC is not an option, as my son hates Windows!
So, there's our conundrum. Right now, it looks like our best solution would be to get a used MBPro (non-Nvidia!), ship it (hoping it gets there in one piece), then swap the memory from the broken machine into the replacement. This will not void the Extended Warranty. Then my son can re-install his data (and Windows) from the external drive that he uses for Time Machine. That's the current idea, anyway.
All-in-all, while this is a complicated problem with no easy solution, it's not that big a deal, relative to everything that's going on in my son's life.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

I am deploying to Afghanistan and I will not have wifi access.  I will have a hardline access to internet.  How do I sync my apps, newsstand, etc without wifi connection?

About the only other way I can think of is to have a computer with you or use one there, if you can put iTunes on it and download all your new stuff to the computer, then sync your iPad to that computer.
In switching computers you will lose previous content, but, as I understand it anyway, downloaded content will be the same as long as the same apple ID is used.

  • My sleep/wake button broke today while I was running.  But I'm in AFGHANISTAN!  When I try to get it serviced, they tell me they can't ship to APO!  What else can I do?  Want me to walk to my nearest Apple store?  Do they have one of those in Kabul?

    Dear Apple-
Why do you not ship to APO?  Is your contract with FEDEX really so restrictive that you cannot ship repairs to soldiers in Afghanistan?  Seriously?  I should have bought a Zune.
The sleep/wake button is pathetically cheap on the 6G Nano.  This is probably my 7th iPod and I have to come to expect something of higher standard from a company like Apple.
So how do we resolve my broken sleep/wake button?  Who knows!  Apple won't ship to APO...

  • Can I use Apple TV in Afghanistan?

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan and can pick up Wi-Fi, but I'm not sure if I can use Apple TV here. I know NETFLIX won't work overseas.
    Thanks.

In theory so long as you have an iTunes account for your home country (USA I assume) you should be able to use it abroad so long as the local internet connection is not blocking connection to the home store - we have certainly seen similar discussions in the past where people have used AppleTV abroad.
Apple could at any time start to limit access to a particular store from outside it's borders but they don't currently so long as the account is valid AFAIK.
Not sure what kind of wi-fi connection you have but bear in mind that for HD movie rental a sustained download rate of 6-8 Mbps is recommended for a satisfactory experience otherwise you might end up waiting for 30-60 minutes or longer for a movie to start. SD will give more satisfactory functionality in these circumstances  starting almost instantly for connections of around 3Mbps and higher.
If you simply wanted to use AppleTV to relay pre-downloaded content from an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch or computer using the Airplay function or from iTunes on a local Mac/PC then you'd need a local network where each device could see each other, and for any protected video content from itunes you'd also need the internet connectivity for 'authorisation' purposes due to the copy protection.

How could I make face time available in my iPhone 5 setting? I bought it on United Arab Emirate and use it in Afghanistan, with Etisalat GSM connection.

You can not do so. It is permanently removed from all iPhones sold in UAE and KSA. This is a requirement of the goverenments there. Apple has no choice in the matter.

"If I upgrade my itunes do I lose all my CD recordings? "
No.  But you should always maintain a backup copy just in case.
" Why am I being charged for albums I have downloaded from CD?"
    What are you talking about?
You only get charged for what you buy.

  • Stuck at grey screen issue: with an Afghanistan twist

First time post, so please go easy. I apologize for loading so much into the first post, but I believe it's better to give you all the information about my situation so I don't waste your time having to ask me questions about it, that I could have already provided.
Background: I bought my 17" MBP from a friend in late 2007 after he convinced me how superb it was in comparison to a PC. Since then I've been on a mission to convert everyone I can, as I personally view Windows as a self sustaining virus and will never use one for personal use again.
I'm in the Army, and my MBP has survived three long deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and has not once ever had any kind of problems...until now. I'm currently in Afghanistan with my MBP and do not have any of my systems disks. A week ago, the CD drive stopped reading disks of any kind and ejects them after attempting to read them. Additionally, I can now hear the right side fan sounding like a lawn mower.
Today, my biggest nightmare came to fruition. I restarted my MBP after making some folder organizational changes, and it now refuses to start. It sticks at the grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel. The wheel does spin. (I say that since in other threads I've noticed most people say their wheel does not spin).
I've already read countless blogs and discussion boards, and have tried many recommended solutions. I have particularly enjoyed Kappy's help to others. But I feel as if I'm in an near Apollo 13 situation, in that I do not have my installation CD and it wouldn't help anyway with my CD drive not responding and having nothing else to use to get my MBP to start up.
I've tried the single user startup using command "s" and attempted some solutions suggested by Kappy with the following results:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
This ends by telling me "The volume MAC HD appears to be OK"
    AWESOME
    So then I tried this:
    :/ root# /sbin/mount -uw /
    :/ root# cd /Library/Preferences
    :Preferences rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
and could not go any further because it responded with: "No such file or directory"
When I tried using command "V" it kept repeating the following:
    chad-squires-macbook-pro-32 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.mDNSResponder[31]): posix_spawnp("/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder', ...): No such file or directory
So at this point, I have no idea what to do. I have internet access through a friends MBP (thought it's about as fast as dial up), but that's the extent of my problem and availability of resources to fix.
Please tell me that there is something I can do to get my baby working again, and most importantly get some irreplaceable family photos off and other documents back.

Oh boy, you've gotten some all-over-the-board responses.
    Let's start here.
Someone mentioned above that it sounds like the NVIDIA issue. Rest assured, unless you have no video, graphics artifacting (lines, distortion, etc.), or kernel panics (messages that tell you you have to power off/restart), you don't have the NVIDIA issue. People love to toss that out when you have a model that may be affected, your symptoms don't sound anything like this.
You're not necessarily SOL without your install discs per se, but if it does look like you need to reinstall, there's not much that can be done without...well...some kind of installer. You can install from a USB drive but you'd need a working machine and an operating system disc of some kind to clone it.
    That said:
    :/ root# /sbin/mount -uw /
    :/ root# cd /Library/Preferences
    :Preferences rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Unless I'm reading this wrong, you've got a typo.
    Should be:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Library/Preferences
    rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    I saw the line
    :Preferences rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Was expecting you to have root# in front, that makes me think you typed 'preferences rm', you don't need to type 'preferences' first.
Also: is your account set to automatically log you in (take you to the desktop) or does it have you type your username/password first? That might be important.
Have you tried a safe boot?
Safe boot: this can be helpful if the issue is with your account, a font cache, or a third party kernel extension/driver. Boot this way by holding Shift when you hear the chime, let go when you see the spinning gear. If all goes well, this should take you to the login window. If you can't boot in safe mode or if it does the exact same thing, again, let us know.
The results you saw in verbose mode make me think it's hanging because something got moved. mDNSresponder is important and you can't start without it.
There are other preference files that we can troubleshoot, I find verbose mode to be the most helpful in diagnosing the spinning wheel that goes on forever, a lot of times it's a corrupt driver and there's not much that can be done except reinstall.
Lastly: you mentioned you restarted after organizational changes and that's when the problem started...what did you move? Anything in the System folder or Library folder(s)?
You mentioned you have a friend with a MBP. Any chance either of you has a firewire cable? Does he have his discs? You can use another computer's superdrive in target disk mode hooked up to your computer, that's always one way to reinstall if your own superdrive doesn't work.

  • HT201269 Can anyone assist me to solve this issue? how to purchase apps from Apple Store using in Afghanistan?

    Dear All,
I use my iPhone here in Afghanistan, and location of my Apple ID is set to US, I want to purchase some apps from Apple Store but when i enter my credit card details so it ask me for US's Credit Card, Even i could not find Afghanistan in the list of countries.
Can anyone assist me to solve this issue?
    Thank You.

Sorry, but there is no iTunes Store for Afghanistan and you are not allowed to use the iTunes Store of any other country, so unless you physically go to another country and have a valid payment method issued in that country (an Afghani credit card will not be accepted), you cannot purchase apps.

  • Afghanistan and Unwanted Messages

I receive about 3 different messages from stranger attempting to scam daily! I've already mentioned this here on the forum, and I'm reporting every single one. An earlier email mentioned a Garry Robinson (from 2012), and one of the users had that username as well. Mostly the messages I get mention Afghanistan soldiers' names, but I also get these messages trying to solicit conversations from people/men who most likely are using fraudulent identities. I'm getting annoyed at having to report this so many times a day! What exactly happens after the report goes through? How do I get these people to simply stop contacting me?

unfortunately, there is no option yet to block/filter those truly annoying contact requests, regardless if they are requests from legitimate users or from possible spammers/scammers. The only things you can do at the moment is indeed to ignore and block them (and report them to [email protected]).  The Privacy Settings in Skype can only prevent/stop unwanted calls/instant messages from non-contacts, not contact requests.
