In an interview situation ...

are you , as an interviewee, better to explain the structure/design of a project you have worked on by drawing on a whiteboard or just trying to talk your way through it. Point being, if I was the interviewer I would prefer see a person sketch a diagram but then I'm the one looking for a job on Tue morn so what is the best thing if there is a best way?

well
think of it a different way... during an interview they aren't just seeing what you can code. They are looking at pretty much every aspect of you, and communication skills are a must.
I'd go with talking your through it. Practice it first so you don't sound like an idiot. It'll also let your interviewer know how you communicate (they'll prolly even ask you communication questions)
drawing your way through could work with an explination, but i dunno. I'd go with explaining it.

    I had a fidgety interview subject who was wearing a pacemaker that interfered with the lav mike that we had attached to him. We had to resort to a shotgun mike which provided more shielding. He was sitting in a velour chair and had a tendency to move around quite a bit...with that kind of rustling sound from clothing. Unfortunately we could not switch out his chair.
    Any advice on which audio filters in Soundtrack Pro may be the most useful? I could take a look at the frequency spectrum analyser, but I think that is probably only good for removing loud flashes of sound like something hitting the mike boom.
    I'm sure others have tried to filter out similar sounds in an interview situation and I thought of asking first before I try my experimentation. Of all the filters one can use, which should I give priority to first?

    If the rustling noises are a LOT softer than the voice, try the FCP or Apple "expander" used as a noise gate. The FCP documentation discusses it. Basically, you pick a threshhold below which you kill the sound. You'll have to experiment a bit to make sure that you subject speaks or you have other wanted audio that it is not cut off. You also need to be careful that the spots between the subject talking are not unnaturally quiet. I've added an "ambient noise" track to some stuff I've done, or even soft white noise so that it doesn't go dead silent between speeches.

  • How to make track work in both left and right speaker?

    i have an audio track with 2 speakers that each had a lav mic on them.  one was recorded into left channel and the other the right channel.  so of course when i play back each of their voices only come out of one speaker.  pretty new to audition so how do i fix the track so that they each come out of both speakers?  TIA

    I have to say that, although not uncommon, for TV it depends quite a lot on how things are shot.  In a standard interview situation where you might have a 2-shot to establish (with a definite left and right position) then a close up of the interviewee then a cutaway of the reporter and so on, panning can become very confusing and it tends to be better to just put everything in the centre.
    Radio is easier because you don't have to be aware of what pictures are showing--but, even there care needs to be taken especially since, as Steve says, a lot of listening is on ear buds or headphones which accentuate any panning.  Even in radio, though, choices have to be careful...for example, let's say the host starts with an interview where he's panned slightly right and the guest slightly left.  So far, so good.  However, then the next two stories are just studio reads...does the host stay panned slightly right for consistency or does he move to the centre possibly causing confusion? 
    I'm not saying never give positioning clues in a radio or TV mix, just that you always have to be aware of the bigger picture.

  • OT:  Audio Level Adjustment in Premiere

    In broadcast interview situations, the interviewee often continues to speak but the audio disappears without a fade out or sudden cutoff.  One frame the subject is talking, the next just his lips are moving until the segue back to the interviewer.
    What's the secret to doing this sort of edit?  When I do this using volume effects, I either get an obvious fade as the volume goes to zero, or a get a sudden cutoff that's never clean sounding.  Razoring a audio track often comes across too abrupt and obvious.  How is this done?

    No, this is a pretty common technique, though I don't seem to see it too often at the end of a soundbite. It's used frequently in news magazine types of shows, most often when introducing a person or interview subject to the viewer for the first time. For example:
    You're watching a story about competitive potato chip eating. You've just seen a few moments of location b-roll and action footage of potato chip eating competitions, whilst the reporter uses a voiceover to begin telling the story, probably about the rigors of training for such an event. As the reporter begins to talk about the world-ranking potato chip eater, the video cuts to this individual in an interview setting, and it's clear from the video that he's blathering away. However, there is no audio from the interview, just the reporter's VO setting up the soundbite. You might hear something like, "Joe Schmo, world-ranking potato chip eater, trains over sixty hours each week". At that point, the interview audio cuts in quickly, almost as if it's completing the thought in the VO, eg. "Training is hard work. It's almost like a job". And so on and so forth...
    You could do the same to exit from a soundbite, but I personally think that means you've selected the wrong soundbite to use. The interviewee isn't completing the thought, hence the need to dip out of the audio quickly. That said, you can achieve this pretty easily with a very short audio dissolve or (my preference) by keyframing the volume rubberband for a particular clip. It's easier to ramp the audio for a slight ease in/ease out effect that can soften the cut. Something in the neighborhood of 3-4 frames should be all you need. If it's still too abrupt, you may have to lay in some room tone/ambient sound in order to bridge the cut. You can then put a slightly longer fade on this clip to more transparently transition out of the interview.

  • Any advantages of using HD in an SD project?

    Hi there,
    Apologies if this question has been asked and answered - I ran a search but couldn't find a "specific" answer if you will.
    I've been given the proposal of producing an SD project but utilising HD footage; which I know is possible!
    But the guy who is handing over the job is insisting we can take advantage of the HD footage within the SD project as it'll be larger than our PAL SD "canvas" [which I know is true], which means we can [and I quote] "zoom in and retain detail".
    I'm really not so sure this is possible!? As I was under the impression that any HD footage brought into an SD project would be automatically resized to fit the project dimensions!
    Could anybody kindly point me in the right direction? And to be honest I'd rather we have the piece shot as we intend it to look [or as close as] in the final edit, ie. cut aways, close-ups, wides, etc., rather than relying on a probable myth of the above!

    Well, I'll be honest and admit to being shocked -- don't you hate when you're wrong?!
    I was absolutely certain that importing HD into SD would simply be re-sized to the SD dimensions! Oh well...
    But [and as you rightly said] I would rather see the material shot correctly for "correct use" in the first place rather than relying on the fact that we could possibly zoom-in [which is often an unatural move in interview situations].
    I need to convince the "guy" [as we shall now call him] of the need to storyboard and script [of which they will be rather than vox-pops] the end use of the interviews.
    Another day, another dollar... Or pound sterling in my case!!

    Why is everything in my playback monitor blown up (by 200% or so?), and why is it showing as 4:3? I imported mxf files that show up fine in the preview monitor, but when edited into the timeline they now suddenly appear super blown up; there is a guy in a mid-shot interview situation, but now I only see his arm. Perhaps I hit  a wrong button by accident, but how can I resolve this? ALso, whether it's the same issue or whether it is unrelated I don't know, but in the playback monitor the aspect ratio seems 4:3; why is that? Any idea, on either topic, anyone? Thank you!!!!! I appreciate your help!!

  • 7D/1080 and HPX170/24Pn together?

    I'm going to do a 2-camera shoot with a 7D and a Panny HPX170. I want the native 24P of the Panny but the 7D only shots 24P in 1080. Can I shoot with these two disparate settings and still edit on the same timeline in FPCX?
    I have to say the handling of the vast array of formats by the new Final Cut impresses me, but can it do this?

    I'm actually borrowing a friend's 170 and in doing some testing I did some side-by-sides, out-putted that from a timeline for playing through iTunes on my (Apple) TV. The 170's 1080 footage was inCREDibly...gosh, what's the word?...interlace-y. Just shooting a person a la interview-situation and capturing their minor side-to-side motion while seatred resulted in a strangely high degree of horizontal video scan lines. Ergo I figured it best to keep the 170 at 720 to utilize the native progressive (and the 7D only shoots 24P in 1080).

  • Sony HVRZ5U focusing issues

    I have used the hvr z 5u for about 2 years and getting feedback that there are focusing issues.
    Specifically, when filming a sit down interviews, the subject (usually on the left third of the frame) becomes out of focus?! I am a professional videographer with experience and trying to troubleshoot this issue. The focus on the subject is either a soft focus or general lack of focus with the focus on another part of the frame.
    All that being said, I have been told this occurs in both auto focus and manual focus ?!!
    I hope someone can explain what could be the cause. I am not sure if it is the distance to the subject, lighting, or another matter.

    I would reseet the camera (reset button, top panel, beneath the LCD) and do a quick test @ 1080/60i with a fixed shutter of 1/60 and autofocus  = off. Make sure you can focus through the whole zoom range and make sure that your back focus holds (focus on distant, high contrast object, zoom all the way out, then zoom back in and verify that the focus is maintained). If this checks out you can turn autofocus on and test the autofocus tracking. It should not drift/hunt too much in a sit down interview situation with a fairly static subject and not a lot going on in the frame. If you continue to see focus issues the camera may need to be sent in and evaluated by Sony.

    I can tell you about my experience in different process.
    I usually have a first interview with the recruiter/agency this first interview is quite general, he usually review your CV, job history,... the recruiter ask you about your interest or motivation for that process, if you are willing to travel, reallocate, etc.. your salary expectations and your knowledge in the different modules. This is the easier interview and if everything is ok, the recruiter will tell you for next steps, probably about the project, the employer, etc...
    In the second interview normally is with the consultancy company, with the manager and an experience consultant that usually asks about technical questions, they ask for example, how to setup a dual accounting process with SLA in GL, which reports you would use to reconcille AP/AR and GL, how many segments do you need to setup in GL for a specific business situation, how to load assest in FA, which are de accounting steps from buy goods until you account the AP invoices,...
    In some cases you have also a final interview with customer just to get the final approval, but the really important one is the second interview.

    Answer: You must maintain proper documentation of minutes which will help in this situatuation. Any sort of decisions shall be recorded and circulated. With chronological way organizing minutes, you can overcome the conflict situation by

    Answer: Prepare a document with mapping of process steps which have lead to take the decision and identify the root causes for not anticipating the adverse impact. I am sure there will be proper reasons for decision making and also for not anticipating adverse impact. With this, you can restore the trust in client to go ahead with corrective step.
    3) Describe a situation where you slipped behind your deadline. What was the impact on the client? How did you control the outcome?
    Answer: As like answer 2, you must clearly identify the reasons for slip. The genuine reasons will be excused. However you must anticipate the possible slip and shall be escalated in advance rather than scanning after occurrence of slip.

    Cluster table can be used to store control data they can also used to store temporary data or text such as documentation.
    17) What is pf-status?
    Pf status is used in interactive report for enhancing the functionality. If we go to se41, we can get menus, items and different function keys, which we are using for secondary list in interactive report.

It describes the value range of the field. Data Element: It is used to describe the semantic definition of the table fields like description the field. Data element describes how a field can be displayed to end-user.
    3. What is foreign key relationship?- A relationship which can be defined between tables and must be explicitly defined at field level. Foreign keys are used to ensure the consistency of data. Data entered should be checked against existing data to ensure that there are now contradiction. While defining foreign key relationship cardinality has to be specified. Cardinality mentions how many dependent records or how referenced records are possible.
    4. Describe data classes.- Master data: It is the data which is seldomly changed. Transaction data: It is the data which is often changed. Organization data: It is a customizing data which is entered in the system when the system is configured and is then rarely changed. System data:It is the data which R/3 system needs for itself.
    5. What are indexes?- Indexes are described as a copy of a database table reduced to specific fields. This data exists in sorted form. This sorting form ease fast access to the field of the tables. In order that other fields are also read, a pointer to the associated record of the actual table are included in the index. Yhe indexes are activated along with the table and are created automatically with it in the database.
    6. Difference between transparent tables and pooled tables.- Transparent tables: Transparent tables in the dictionary has a one-to-one relation with the table in database. Pooled tables in the dictionary has a many-to-one relation with the table in database. Table in the database has the different name as in the dictionary. If you display the object list for one change request, and then for each object the object attributes, you will find the flag client specific. If one object in the task list has this flag on, then that transport will be client dependent.
    23. What is the difference between macro and subroutine? - Macros can only be used in the program the are defined in and only after the definition are expanded at compilation / generation. Subroutines (FORM) can be called from both the program the are defined in and other programs . A MACRO is more or less an abbreviation for some lines of code that are used more than once or twice. A FORM is a local subroutine (which can be called external). A FUNCTION is (more or less) a subroutine that is called external. Since debugging a MACRO is not really possible, prevent the use of them (I’ve never used them, but seen them in action). If the subroutine is used only local (called internal) use a FORM. If the subroutine is called external (used by more than one program) use a FUNCTION.

    1. What are plan versions used for?
    Ans : Plan versions are scenarios in which you can create organizational plans.
    •     In the plan version which you have flagged as the active plan version, you create your current valid organizational plan. This is also the integration plan version which will be used if integration with Personnel Administration is active.
    •     You use additional plan versions to create additional organizational plans as planning scenarios.
    As a rule, a plan version contains one organizational structure, that is, one root organizational unit. It is, however, possible to create more than one root organizational unit, that is more than one organizational structure in a plan version.

    2. What are the basic object types?
    Ans. An organization object type has an attribute that refers to an object of the organization management (position, job, user, and so on). The organization object type is linked to a business object type.
    Example
    The business object type BUS1001 (material) has the organization object type T024L (laboratory) as the attribute that on the other hand has an object of the organization management as the attribute. Thus, a specific material is linked with particular employees using an assigned laboratory.

    Ans. Work Centre : A work center is an organizational unit that represents a suitably-equipped zone where assigned operations can be performed. A zone is a physical location in a site dedicated to a specific function. 
    Organization Unit : Organizational object (object key O) used to form the basis of an organizational plan. Organizational units are functional units in an enterprise. According to how tasks are divided up within an enterprise, these can be departments, groups or project teams, for example.
    Organizational units differ from other units in an enterprise such as personnel areas, company codes, business areas etc. These are used to depict structures (administration or accounting) in the corresponding components.
    5. Where can you maintain relationships between objects?
    Ans. Infotype 1001 that defines the Relationships between different objects.
    There are many types of possible relationships between different objects. Each individual relationship is actually a subtype or category of the Relationships infotype.
    Certain relationships can only be assigned to certain objects. That means that when you create relationship infotype records, you must select a relationship that is suitable for the two objects involved. For example, a relationship between two organizational units might not make any sense for a work center and a job.

    Ans. You use the user interface in the Organization and Staffing or Organization and Staffing (Workflow) view to create, display and edit organizational plans.
    The user interface is divided into various areas, each of it which fulfills specific functions.
    Search Area
    Selection Area
    Overview Area
    Details Area
    Together, the search area and the selection area make up the Object Manager.
    7. What is Expert Mode used for?
    Ans. interface is used to create Org structure. Using Infotypes we can create Objects in Expert mode and we have to use different transactions to create various types of objects.  If the company needs to create a huge structure, we will use Simple maintenance, because it is user friendly that is it is easy to create a structure, the system automatically relationship between the objects.
    8. Can you create cost centers in Expert Mode?
    Ans. Probably not. You create cost center assignments to assign a cost center to an organizational unit, or position.
    When you create a cost center assignment, the system creates a relationship record between the organizational unit or position and the cost center. (This is relationship A/B 011.) No assignment percentage record can be entered.

    Ans. By depicting your organizational units and the hierarchical or matrix relationships between them, you model the organizational structure of your enterprise.
    This organizational structure is the basis for the creation of an organizational plan, as every position in your enterprise is assigned to an organizational unit. This defines the reporting structure.
    11. In general structure maintenance, is it possible to represent the legal entity of organizational units?
    12. What is the Object Infotype (1000) used for?
    Ans. Infotype that determines the existence of an organizational object.
    As soon as you have created an object using this infotype, you can determine additional object characteristics and relationships to other objects using other infotypes.
    To create new objects you must:
    •     Define a validity period for the object
    •     Provide an abbreviation to represent the object
    •     Provide a brief description of the object
    The validity period you apply to the object automatically limits the validity of any infotype records you append to the object. The validity periods for appended infotype records cannot exceed that of the Object infotype.
    The abbreviation assigned to an object in the system renders it easily identifiable. It is helpful to use easily recognizable abbreviations.
    You can change abbreviations and descriptions at a later time by editing object infotype records. However, you cannot change an object’s validity period in this manner. This must be done using the Delimit function.
    You can also delete the objects you create. However, if you delete an object the system erases all record of the object from the database. You should only delete objects if they are not valid at all (for example, if you create an object accidentally)
    13. What is the Relationships Infotype (1001) used for?
    Ans. Infotype that defines the Relationships between different objects.
    You indicate that a employee or user holds a position by creating a relationship infotype record between the position and the employee or user. Relationships between various organizational units form the organizational structure in your enterprise. You identify the tasks that the holder of a position must perform by creating relationship infotype records between individual tasks and a position.
    Creating and editing relationship infotype records is an essential part of setting up information in the Organizational Management component. Without relationships, all you have are isolated pieces of information.
    You must decide the types of relationship record you require for your organizational structure.
    If you work in Infotype Maintenance, you must create relationship records manually. However, if you work in Simple Maintenance and Structural Graphics, the system creates certain relationships automatically.
    14. Which status can Infotypes in the Organizational Management component have?
    Ans. Once you have created the basic framework of your organizational plan in Simple Maintenance, you can create and maintain all infotypes allowed for individual objects in your organizational plan. These can be the basic object types of Organizational Management – organizational unit, position, work center and task. You can also maintain object types, which do not belong to Organizational Management.
    15. What is an evaluation path?
    Ans. An evaluation path describes a chain of relationships that exists between individual organizational objects in the organizational plan.
    Evaluation paths are used in connection with the definition of roles and views.
    The evaluation path O-S-P describes the relationship chain Organizational unit > Position > Employee.
    Evaluation paths are used to select other objects from one particular organizational object. The system evaluates the organizational plan along the evaluation path.
    Starting from an organizational unit, evaluation path O-S-P is used to establish all persons who belong to this organizational unit or subordinate organizational units via their positions.
    16. What is Managers Desktop used for?
    Ans. Manager's Desktop assists in the performance of administrative and organizational management tasks. In addition to functions in Personnel Management, Manager's Desktop also covers other application components like Controlling, where it supports manual planning or the information system for cost centers.
    17. Is it possible to set up new evaluation paths in Customizing?
    Ans. You can use the evaluation paths available or define your own. Before creating new evaluation paths, check the evaluation paths available as standard.
    18. Which situations require new evaluation paths?
    Ans. When using an evaluation path in a view, you should consider the following:
    Define the evaluation path in such a manner that the relationship chain always starts from a user (object type US in Organizational Management) and ends at an organizational unit, a position or a user.
    When defining the evaluation path, use the Skip indicator in order not to overload the result of the evaluation.
    19. How do you set up integration between Personnel Administration and Organizational Management?
    Ans. Integration between the Organizational Management and Personnel Administration components enables you to,
    Use data from one component in the other
    Keep data in the two components consistent
    Basically its relationship between person and position.
    Objects in the integration plan version in the Organizational Management component must also be contained in the following Personnel Administration tables:
    Tables                    Objects
    T528B and T528T     Positions
    T513S and T513     Jobs
    T527X                    Organizational units
    If integration is active and you create or delete these objects in Organizational Management transactions, the system also creates or deletes the corresponding entries automatically in the tables mentioned above. Entries that were created automatically are indicated by a "P". You cannot change or delete them manually. Entries you create manually cannot have the "P" indicator (the entry cannot be maintained manually).
    You can transfer either the long or the short texts of Organizational Management objects to the Personnel Administration tables. You do this in the Implementation Guide under Organizational Management -> Integration -> Integration with Personnel Administration -> Set Up Integration with Personnel Administration. If you change these control entries at a later date, you must also change the relevant table texts. To do that you use the report RHINTE10 (Prepare Integration (OM with PA)).
    When you activate integration for the first time, you must ensure that the Personnel Administration and the Organizational Management databases are consistent. To do this, you use the reports:
    •        RHINTE00 (Adopt organizational assignment  (PA to PD))
    •        RHINTE10 (Prepare Integration (PD to PA))
    •        RHINTE20 (Check Program Integration PA - PD)
    •        RHINTE30 (Create Batch Input Folder for Infotype 0001)
    The following table entries are also required:
    •        PLOGI PRELI in Customizing for Organizational Management (under Set Up Integration with Personnel Administration). This entry defines the standard position number.
    •        INTE in table T77FC
    •        INTE_PS, INTE_OSP, INTEBACK, INTECHEK and INTEGRAT in Customizing under Global Settings ® Maintain Evaluation Paths.
    These table entries are included in the SAP standard system. You must not change them.
    Since integration enables you to create relationships between persons and positions (A/B 008), you may be required to include appropriate entries to control the validation of these relationships. You make the necessary settings for this check in Customizing under Global Settings ® Maintain Relationships.

  • Interview questions: pre or post?

    This may be a stupid question and it really doesn't fit into any 'box' as far as categories go. But I know quite a few of you are experienced shooters here.
    Question:
    If you're doing interviews for a documentary job, would you give the questions to the interviewee BEFORE you have them go on camera? I'm just thinking that I might get some better responses if I don't blindside the person with questions they didn't know were coming and didn't have time to think about. The other side of this though is am I missing some of that spontaneity on camera by allowing the person to know what's going to be asked?
    In my situation, I have a list of 15-20 questions I want to ask several of the documentary main characters. Many of the questions require a bit of deep thinking, as the answers are not black & white. The idea is to give the audience some insight into the minds of the characters. I'm afraid if I just ask them the questions on camera, it's going to either (a) waste a lot of tape or (b) they'll answer quickly, knowing the camera is running, without really thinking hard about 'their' answer.
    I don't know what's general practice and what has worked best for some of you, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    I shot and produced a documentary film called "Kenya" last year. In it, I chroncicled the 1995 al-qaeda attack in Nairobi. I interviewed a survivor and wrestled with the same question you asked.
    I did NOT give him the questions in advance and am so glad I didnt. I got some really dymamic heart-felt stuff. I got some tears and a real account of what happened through his eyes.
    Two pointers: Let him/her talk. Instead of asking a bunch of questions and getting plastics answers, just let them talk. Let your questions guide them to recount, not answer.
    Also, dont be afraid to shot alot, it was priceless have a ton of stuff I could use... and I used more than I planned.

For example, in the daily checklist tasks, I check for the alert log file, competion and correction of my exports and operating system backups. DB space situation, Antivirus status, standby database status, space on disks, any rogue queries etc.

    8 databases, ranging from 1 TB to 10 GB. I have segregated them into OLTP production, testing, cm, and development and a Datawarehouse.

    How much they could afford to lose data or they want zero data loss and also I will get their requirements about down time and up time of database.
    · If a customer calls you about a hanging database session, what will you do to resolve it?
    First I will identify it, then see to it what exactly it is doing, capture that situation and then either try to release the locks(if its a blocking or blocked session), or kill the session, if its hanging on a runaway query.
    · Compare Oracle to any other database that you know. Why would you prefer to work on one and not on the other?
    Oracle passes the ACID rule with distinction as compared to the other databases. Moreover, the multiversion read consistency, recovery, flexibility and challenges of Oracle are matchless.
