In App Advertising

A recent article from TechRebulic which I subscribe to, has highlighted a security risk associated with in-App advertising on the android platform using a tool called AdRisk to automate and identify the risks with a particular App association, and code run by the advertiser included. Several possible risks were found as a result. Namely that, when the advert runs it assumes the security permission set of the hosting App.
What steps have Apple taken, or are they taking, in association with various developers to minimize security risks.
Several possible problems arise. One; is the elevation of privilege. Two; could be the impact of the collection of personal information and how it is used. Three; is the risk of association by following the link when the originating code already has access to the serving system, I.E the idevice itself.
This is my first trip to the Developer discussion pages, but since some of the free Apps I have on my iPad2 utilise in-App advertising, I thought the question was of merit.

You do have the option to write a review. It will be displayed on the page in the App Store, to help other consumers make informed decisions.
Frankly, I am a little skeptical of your claims. The app does not appear to target young kids. And "questions about brands" in the context of a quiz does not equate to "advertising alcohol," although admittedly I do not know the details of the UK regulations to which you refer. But my opinion does not matter. Feel free to write a review.

Microsoft Word 2012 scam app on store

I just noticed a "Microsoft Word 2012" app on the app store while browsing AppShopper. I checked it on the store and it is obviously a scam. How did this app even make it to the store? I don't see how an app advertised as "All features of the MAC version on your device", but obviously does not makes it onto the store. I see that they creatively spelled MAC in all capital letters, as in MAC address, for example, and not Mac.
I also read on a app-dedicated website that not only this, but a "Cydia" scam app appeared on the store recently. Some readers responded to the article with the same concerns. Someone said that they are going to call Apple about this.
Are these scam apps going to become a problem with the App Store? Are they being caught fairly quickly?

Yeah, but that only works for apps that you've bought. Things like 'Microsoft Word' from 'Super Real Racing Games' for $9.99 is a pretty obvious scam, yet I can't report it.

Skype Wifi - advertised as free until January 2014...

Sending this out for two reasons - firstly to see if anyone else is affected (though I suspect most people won't notice unless their credit was wiped out), secondly as a warning to not leave a lot of credit on your Skype account just in case!
The Skype Wifi app advertised that it would provide free wifi access up to the end of January 2014 - this is as advertised on both itunes and Google Play app stores.
However, I used Skype Wifi while abroad recently and was charged for every use - it wiped the credit on my account.
I cannot verify my account so cannot communicate over email (and they can give no hint as to which of the 23 questions asked didn't match - they just keep asking you to fill it in again). So I've resorted to chat, which requires no validation (?!?).
So far I've had very conflicting responses from Skype's (rather useless) customer service:
- I was incorrectly billed, I will be called back to resolve this [I wasn't called]
- the content of the itunes/google play app descriptions is not under Skype's control
- the content of the itunes/google play app descriptions is written by Skype's marketing team in Luxembourg, not the support team in Phillipines, so no refund can be given
- @SkypeSupport on twitter would "love to help" but then ignore my response

No need to apologize, I actually found the phrase "If your iPad ever craps the bed" amusing under the circumstances
I checked the list of installed apps like you suggested (Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Show all apps) but this problem app is not in the list. I have also swiped down on the home screen to search for it, but again it does not show.
While it has not let me download the app (and I just tried it again) it has helped me to eliminate a few things from the list of what to try, and I can definitely conclude that it has not downloaded.
I guess I need to fire up my PC and download it / sync my iPad.

Monetization of Mobile Apps

I've scoured a lot of forums and can't find any definitive, recent answer to this question, hopefully somebody has some light to shed on this:
Is there ANY way to monetize a CS5.5-based mobile Flash app?
Specifically:
iOS:
-Can you implement in-app purchases or micro-transactions?
-Can you implement in-app advertisements?
-Can you charge a one-time price to buy your app?
Android: Same questions, purchasing, microtransactions, that sort of thing.
Sorry if I'm being too blunt, but I'm just looking for an absolute, comprehensive answer to all the above questions. Thanks very much!

The problem was caused because my files were not consolidated. I had moved my iTunes media fle from one external drive to a bigger external drive. So iTunes did not see the older apps on the newer drive and thus did not delete them. Once I consolidated the files it worked ok again.
So then I checked for duplicate files in the mobile apps folder. This was very labor intensive since I have a lot of apps. With some I could determine very easily that the update should be the only file. But some mobile apps have an HD version with the same name and numbering system, so I would see perhaps 4 versions of an app. And there are no icons for differentiating. So I would double click each file. The newer ones would do nothing. The older ones would have a dialog box that said do i want to replace the newer file with this older file. And that would be the file to delete. I did gain a lot of space back after doing this.

App World keeps overcharging me

I have a Playbook and download games and the odd app pretty regularly. Yesterday I bought 5 games, 4 of which charged my Paypal account more than was advertised (example: Ragged Edge 3D was advertised yesterday at £2.50, but Blackberry billed me for £4.00). In total, I ordered £6 of games, but was charged over £10 in total.
How are we supposed to sort out these issues? There seems only to be the option of obtaining a full refund or querying in forums. I don't need a full refund, but would like some clairification and possible refund over these overcharges.

I don't know what form you are trying, but as I recall there is one "out there", but indeed it is not the proper channel to use (I do wish they would take it down!!). Refunds from AppWorld are requested from BlackBerry, but to do so you must first contact your mobile service provider, who is then responsible for escalating your request up to BlackBerry for processing.

Freeze on blank screen with sound loop when playing steam games

I would really appreciate some advice. I've been troubleshooting this problem without success,
Problem:
Playing games on steam*, at some point, sometimes 5 minutes in, sometimes 2 hours in:
- Screen goes blank,
- last sound loops continuously,
- computer completely unresponsive, requires hard shut down
- On restart I get almost the same report every time, though sometimes it referes to CPU 0 and sometimes CPU 2, a sample:

- updating steam and OS X
- closing all apps besides steam
- disabling Vsync in the games
- running games in very low quality
- updating to latest flash beta (steam uses flash for in-app advertising)

- verify and repair disk within OS
- SMART check, RAM test, Video memory test with TechTool Pro, all Pass
- removing peripherals ie. Microsoft bluetooth mouse
- hardware test with OS X install DVD on reboot, detects no problems
- stressing the GPU doing intensive 3D effects in Adobe After Effects, no crash
- stressing GPU using CINEBENCH, no crash
- monitoring temp with Temperature Monitor, Last crash GPU was at around 80 and CPU at around 85

- Machine is still under 1 yr warranty
- I'm overseas studying design and I really cant afford to to take it in and not have a machine for 2 weeks. I'd really like to exhaust all options before taking it in. I'm also worrying that they will run the hardware test as I did and tell me: no problems found.

I'm so ****** off that it's been weeks and no solution has been provided for this. In the middle of video editing, watching quicktime videos, youtube, or playing any games the computer hard freezes with a black screen and looping audio of about 1/2 second.

CC, bad idea Adobe.
Adobe's opening gambit starts with flattery, for us designers.... "At Adobe, we believe our customers are some of the most influential people in the world."
You're right, we're also the most product savvy and design conscious consumers in the world... which is why we will never buy into a product as controlling and capitalist as CC.
CC is for our new 'mobile world'... what, so we can suckle on the cloud from our mobile devices? (A cloud that is potentially vunerable to hackers and DDoS attacks).
'Mobile devices' are platforms for CONSUMPTION NOT CREATION. You cannot design on a tablet or a phone! (even if the marketing vid does show some hipster who works from a coffee shop creating a colour swatch on his iphone) Just look at the tablet market.. itunes, and Windows8... computers in a straight jackets. Access to a built in shop, and limited functionality for file manipulation / creation.
The thing is.. it is far too easy to see already, how CC will become just another platform for consumption, A BIG SHOP ON YOUR DESKTOP.
CC is starting to look alot like itunes for creatives. It has the scope for a font shop, filter shop, a stock image/graphic shop and a 'Prosite Portfolio' to warm you into their own brand of online jobs market.
"Preview fonts in layout before you commit"... Sounds a lot like an IN APP PURCHASE TO ME!
I noticed noone else had commented on the 'consumerist shop platform' aspect' of CC, so there it is. The high price, requirement for an internet connection once a month, the security issues, the practicality of managing subscriptions have already been well covered... by the plethora of users who are either vowing to jump ship or roll with CS6 until Adobe does a U-turn.
Going by what I have read on the forums already... Adobe, you're flogging a dead horse, and it'll never work because that's what we do for a living!
Roll it in glitter all you want, CC is just another datacapturing, desktop shop with inapp purchases. I wouldn't be surprised if CC came with unlockable 'achievements'.

I'm no lawyer but, it looks like CC is geared up for all sorts of user datacapture and in app advertising. Especially when you blur the line between what is online, what is an app and how these services and tools interact in a cloud platform like CC. I sit infront of CS for 8 hours a day. Call me paranoid, or a conspiracist but the idea of the professional tool I use everyday turning into an itunes really makes we want to pull the plug and install Corel Draw and Quark.

Probable iphone 6 virus?

I downloaded an app called Photo Collage Maker by Kai Xia yesterday and there are in-app advertisements which I accidentally clicked. It led me straight to Safari's browser and there's a pop-up saying that my device has been infected with a button prompting me to 'scan' the phone. Having no other way to exit the page or the pop-up, I clicked on it and it started downloading or uploading something. I closed the webpage as soon as I am able to. The site's address is download.com-01.mobi/?uid=735337560.
Can anyone tell me what happened and what I need to do to prevent a possible hack/virus attack?

Ignore it. You just got phishing scam via Safari. There are no viruses for iOS unless you jailbreak it.

Unable to use any of my videos!

The app states it is unable to use any of my videos. First of all the contrast and lighting couldn't possibly be better. I'm a brunette in a red top, against a beige wall, talking to the camera, sitting completely still in a very well lit room. Please explain to me why it can't find a "still shot". The videos I've seen this app advertise for, the ppl in them aren't sitting still at all! I've reshot this video 5 or 6 times and it won't choose any of them. Please help me, I want to send this as a Valentines Day card...

Could you supply a screenshot of the message?
A web search says that Ringo Chips are a snack food in Oman. Sounds like an in-app advertisement.

Make GDR3 Update available soon...

I was pleased with the Amber Update till the announcement of the GDR3 Update. I was also happy that there will be new update soon. There has being new Apps & Games in the Windows Store from a while now which only support the GDR3 Update or not available due to outdated Firmware.
My question here is, "When will the GDR3 Update be made available worldwide?" or "Why are those unsupported Apps advertised in the Store?"
One more thing, I'm just curious to know about this one. The thing is, "Do the Windows Store Management Team CHECK or RUN new app/game before publishing it to the Store?" Cause I see useless Applications & Games in the Store...

If these are the free versions of the games, buy the full version and the iAds should go away. The developer can offer the app for free by selling advertising. If the developer is going to give the app away, he has to be paid for his work somehow.
There may be some paid apps that might include iAds as well. In those instances, the developer includes the ads in order to subsidize the cost of the app to the end user in order to reduce the cost of the app. You should always read the app description when you download any app to make sure that you know what you are getting into - with regard to ads and in-app purchases.
Games are the worst offenders - IMO. Many "free" games become totally useless after you reach a certain level or if you reach your limit in lives or potions or things like that. If you want to continue in the game, you than have to make in-app purchases for levels, lives, potions, beads, whatever. You can rack ip quite a bill playing those "free" games if you are not aware of what you are getting into.
