In-car video recording straight to my Macbook

I fancy getting some in-car video while at the nurburgring this weekend. I was looking at camcorders and mounts, which seemed like the obvious solution. However, it struck me as preferable to store straight to a digital format, as I'd be viewing the footage on my laptop (so only looking for "decent" quality recording). I then took this line of thought a step further and wondered if I could use my Macbook and record straight to that, with some sort of "bullet cam" fitted.
Which leads me to a few questions; is this potentially a good idea? Is there a plug-in decent quality camera available? What software will I need (I'm new to macs - do I already have it (Leopard))? Is a Macbook up to it?
Your comments would be much appreciated.

I had thought it was only handhold cameras that they banned, but a friend clarified this morning that it was in fact all cameras. So it seems if you don't want to get caught then "bullet cams" are the way to go. These seem increasingly common though, so I'm sure there's a suitable camera - just need to know if/how to connect directly to my macbook and if so how and what do I need?

I found this previous post.  Does it help?
"Movie '09 and the Kodak Playsport HD".
His advice worked like a charm:
"This camera is a lot of fun and when i connected it to iMovie 09 I, in the first case, had to go to File, Import Movies and navigate to the SD card and choose all the .mov files which then imported seamlessly. Was able to edit and share the movie no problem."

  • Digital Video Recorder for MacBook Pro 10.4.9

    Hi-
I was hoping someone could suggest a lower end digital video recorder (under $500) that is compatible with the MacBook Pro. I bought a sony recorder before I bought the macbook and it wasnt compatible with imovie. Before I purchase another recorder I would love to hear feedback on a decent model and experiences people have had with different models.

Are you talking about a computer CD/DVD reader/writer or actual DVD recorder (an update of the old VHS recorders). If you are talking about a DVD recorder, as far as I know. NONE are directly compatable with the iApps because the content they record is mpg-2 encoded and would have to be converted to DV for use in the iApps.
What is it you are trying to do?

  • Error when starting new video recording

When I try to start a new video recording I receive the following error:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -536870206.)
I am using Quicktime Pro on an iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.5. Quicktime will work with iSight but not with my PS3 eye (usb webcam). I am able to choose the PS3 eye from Quicktime preferences and the video screen will show up with video from the PS3 eye (so I know that Quicktime recognizes the cam). But the error dialogue box appears immediately.
Other information - I am using macam.component for Quicktime and the PS3 eye works perfectly with Macam.
Has anyone received this error before?

I have not, but I do not use PS3 eye. If it is a "UVC" (usb video class) device, it should work with any Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later _without additional software drivers_. Some unnecessary drivers can conflict with your Mac's software.
If desired, you can remove the file macam.component from /Library/QuickTime and restart Mac to see if the PS3 eye can work with QuickTime without the additional driver.

  • 1080p live video capture from camcorder to MacBook

Is there a device or adapter that will connect the 1080p from a video camcorder's HDMI out to a MacBook's thunderbolt or usb port with QuickTime receiving the camcorder's video and audio when "New Movie Recording" is selected from that application?
Or more succinctly, can I turn my 1080p camcorder into a webcam?
Camcorders have better image quality than webcams (okay, maybe not necessarily JVC, but Canon's do) and more features, such as 38x zoom.   And my MacBook has a much nicer and bigger screen than that little LCD fold-out piece all camcorders have.   So combining the superior video capture of the camcorder with the superior display capability of the MacBook along with the advantage of live recording directly to the MacBook's harddrive (no intermediate SD card file transfer step from device to device) would result in an enhanced video capturing experience.   All that is required is some adapter that will take HDMI from the camera and translate it into something the MacBook will see as a webcam (usb or thunderbolt).   So where do I find such an adapter?

What brand and model is your camcorder?
From this we can determine what format it outputs in, because you capture with the output format from your camcorder. You then, after editing, use PRE to Share your project as MPEG2.
These are the import video sources supported by PRE:
If your camcorder manual is telling you that it outputs MPEG2 (this is a standard definition format) try the 'DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive' format.

    Well,
I tried the "Internet Recovery" option and finally saw Mac OS X Mountain Lion's install page but after waiting 7 hours when I just thought its going to start installing, I got another progress bar with 36 hours remining time to download "Additional Components" then after progressing 2-3 hours, it shows "Unable to write installation something..., Contact Apple Care"
Then I accidently rebooted the machine and now it seems Internet Recovery don't work anymore, it shows "support.apple.com - 40 something!" error, and finally when I tried to reboot using Recovery HD, I found it's gone as-well!
To be honest, I don't know what to do now, I am and dissapointed... also I do not have any Apple Store nearby, there is an authorized country reseller almost 650/km far away from my residents and they even charges too high (like $250) for doing such repairs (as per phone conversation)
If anyone have any idea or anything to help me with, please do share- I'd be eternally grateful!

  • Does the video recorder on ipad 4 have a zoom button? If not, what app do you recommend for zooming in video?

Do I need an app to zoom with the video recorder?

    Fraser41,
school work, watching YouTube videos, and listening to music can be done on any MacBook Pro, new or used. Photo editing is the most demanding task on your list (unless you take up video editing, in which case it would be the most demanding); you can edit photos (and even videos) on MacBook Pros without discrete GPUs, but many operations will be done more quickly on MacBook Pros with a discrete GPU than on those with only an integrated GPU. If photography is your main interest, that could point to a Retina screen as a feature which might be high on your list of preferences; but since all Retina models have soldered-in RAM, however much RAM is present a Retina model is the amount which you’ll need to live with for as long as you own it. The Late 2013 models also have SSDs for which no third-party alternative is available, so at the moment their SSDs can be considered non-upgradeable also. Whether the cheaper MacBook Pro will cope with your needs could depend upon how much screen resolution you’d be satisfied with, and where you find yourself on the GPU time-saved vs. money-spent continuum.
Note that the last 17-inch models made were Late 2011 models; if you’re not interested in used MacBook Pros, then their heaviness would be a moot point.

  • Record television show to Macbook Pro

    Hey everyone.
There is a show tomorrow on my television and I really want to record it to my Macbook Pro.
I don't know how to record from tv to my Macbook Pro. It's my first time.
    I just got my Macbook, a tv and this mini-display port(Mini-Displayport-Male-to-Male-Cable-with-Gold-Plated-up-to-10-8gbps-Video-Bandwi dth.jpg)
Do I need some software or some cable or some other thing to do this recording?
I really want the easiest and cheapiest method to this recording.
    thank you.

If you read the website, the instructions are there.
In a nutshell, you need to purchase a TV tuner and the software.  The tuner is inserted in a USB port and connected to cable or an external TV antenna via a coaxial cable.  The software will allow you to record a TV program which creates a file.  That file can be viewed again and if you wish, edited to remove sections that one might not want.  It will record and play HD TV.
I have a slightly older version of this:

  • I am running my canon camera on the EOS utility program for mac, and i was wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut to start video recording, instead of using the mouse.

I am using EOS utility for MAC to run my canon camera at work. I have a foot switch connected to my macbook that allows me to take snapshots with my foot while i work ( i am a dentist and i have my camera hooked to a microscope). the way i did that is by programming a keyboard shortcut that snaps photos on EOS utility, to the foot switch software.
So my question is: On EOS there is a video recording function, so i was wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut or if i can create a keyboard shortcut for the start/stop record function for video recording..

    Hi
How much free space do you have on your boot disk ( Macintosh HD)?

  • Quicktime - New Video Recording using Canon HV30 - Codec?

I'm using Quicktime Pro 7.4.1 with a Canon HV30 connected via firewire. In Quicktime preferences pane, the HV30 is the video source with "Device Native" as the Quality setting. Though, I can't see a preview in the Quicktime window while recording, it does appear to record footage. When I stop the recording, it says that I don't have the codec to view the footage and sends me to the Quicktime plug-in page on this site, but I have no idea what I need.
Considering some of the codecs (if not all of them) cost money, I'd rather not buy something that won't fix my problem. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: Oh yeah, the camera is set to HDV 1080i60 video standard. When I switch the camera to SDV, the Quicktime preview returns and everything works as expected.

  • ISight video recording became limited to 15 fps?

From time to time I record videos with my built-in iSight camera. I used to do it using iMovie, then Quicktime and Photobooth lately.
However, I noticed that frame rate in all my recent recordings do not exceed 15fps. Photobooth does the worst job -- it records at 7-10 fps, Quicktime 7 records at 12-13 fps, iMovie -- at 15 fps. I even changed iMovie video recording settings to NTSC to achieve 30 fps, but -- no luck. Stuck at 15 fps.
I have tonns of my earlier recordings done at 30 fps. I don't know when exactly it happend, but I believe around the time I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Is there a way of getting iSight recording back to 30 fps?
    Thanks,
    Eugene

You seem like an experienced user, so I will give you some suggestions for your consideration while you troubleshoot your problem. Once you have found the root cause of the trouble, even if it is not automatically resolved, you will have identified what needs to be fixed. If you need clarification or help on any of the following suggestions, I will try to offer more details in response to your specifics.
    (1) You are wise to continue test with multiple apps to see if the problem is system wide or application specific. Before continuing, I suggest you also test in another user account to eliminate the possibility that this issue is user-specific.
    (2) Try turning on some more the light. The idea for this came from the fact that Apple's article entitled Sight's video "stutters" in low light when I turn it on
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2264
says iSight reduces frame rate in low light.
    More info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3097
    (3) Be sure you have not increased processor loads with File Vault, multiple applications in a new workflow, or added Login Items. Also, with "tonns of ... earlier recordings", be certain you are not running short of free space on your disk.
    (4) If nothing there leads to a fix, because you think the issue began upgrading you Mac OS, if you use third party hardware that requires software installation (mouse, keyboard, A/V interface, etc.,) or software (including Microsoft Office or Exchange, plugins such as Perian, Flip4Mac, etc.,) check their support sites to see if any of them have known-issues with 10.6.2.
Perhaps you merely need to update the software or drivers in order for your third-party system components to be compatible with 10.6.2
Uninstall any that are currently known to be incompatible with your system.
    (5) If your problem persists and your system has no third-party components, or at least none that require updating for OS X 10.6.2, backup all important data and apply the 10.6.2 Combo Update (with permissions repairs before AND after the update).
Then test whether your problem persists.
    (6) If your problem persists, reinstall Snow Leopard. Be sure to repair permissions before and after installing.
Once you have reinstalled SL and apply the latest current Combo Updater with permissions repairs between each step and after updating.)
Do not reinstall any third-party apps until you have tested your iSight's function. When iSight is working properly again, you can reinstall your third-party apps again, Install only one third party app at a time, and test it thoroughly before installing another so you can tell if one of them causes problems with your system.
    (7) If the problem persists, the problem may be caused by a software problem outside the Mac&OS that you cannot find. Then only fix I know for that is to zero your disk and do a clean install of SL to see if you can resolve the problem yourself before seeking help from an Apple  Service Provider.

I was right there with you. I posted early on in this thread and was working with tech support on the phone. We worked for a few days and it was like I was having to do too much work on my end. Nothing was working and they were so busy. Someone else posted that they took theirs back and it was an easy swap. I had already made an appointment at the apple store as a backup so I decided to drive the 50 miles. It was so easy....the guy really did not care too much about me working with support. He just tried a restore and was able to repeat the issue. Not saying that all stores are like that but I have had very good results with other apple products and getting support at the genius bar. Good luck...but you may be waiting a while. Seems that the hot topic for them is really the "reception" issue.
