In CS4, "Cannot open file" "Please upgrade your plug-ins..."

Greetings,
I am using InDesign CS4 on a PC. I am trying to open an .indd file created by our marketing department. I don't know what version of InDesign they use nor whether they work on Macs or PCs.
When I double-click to open the file, I get a "Cannot Open File" popup box. The box reads "Cannot open docname.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign." It then lists 18 different plugins:
ASSIGNMENTS.RPLN
TEXT.RPLN
SPREAD.RPLN
MASTER PAGE.RPLN
TEXT ATTRIBUTES.RPLN
.... and 13 more.
When I go to Help > Configure Plug-Ins, I can see that I do have all of these plug-ins. But apparently they are not the latest versions.
Anyone know how I can update these plugins? I have searched for them on the Adobe website, but no joy.
Thanks in advance.
Jen

It's a safe bet that they are working in CS5. The only way to get those plugins is to install CS5 on your machine.
You could ask your marketing department to export an IDML file from CS5, which you can open up in CS4, but it might fail horribly (and it's guaranteed to lay out incorrectly if they've used any tools in CS5 that aren't in CS4). If you rely on this workflow, by regularly using a document going back and forth between CS5 and CS4, chances are very, very good that it will fail at a critical moment. The only really safe thing to do here is to get everyone using the same version of InDesign.

  • Cannot open file "Please upgrade your plug-ins" message

I'm trying to open a CS3 InDesign file and all I get is this error message:
"cannot open "filename". Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest version, or upgrade to the latest version of Indesign. " followed by a long, long, list of plug-ins.
    I'm using InDesign CS3 5.0.4.682 on OSX 10.4.11

Indeed. It uses the same .indd extension as all the InDesign releases. Since you don't have CS4, the Finder thinks it is a CS3 document. But it isn't.

  • Can't open CS3 File - Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions

I created a number of files many months ago with the same version of CS3 (3.01) that I have now on a Windows XP OS. I have not changed it in any way.
Now, when attrmpting to open one of the files I receive the following error message: Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of InDesign
I've searched the forum and found no postings by someone who cannot open files created by their own InDesign.
    Your help would be appreciated.

Are you certain it's the same version? You'd need to have purchased new media for the PC.
What Bob has said is entirely accurate. Do you still have the Mac? I'm not sure exactly how to find the version on Mac, but I suspect that "get info" will return at least a version, if not the build. On the PC you can open ID and click the Help menu, then hold down the Ctrl key and click "About InDesign" to get a full information dialog.
If you can't confirm your version on the Mac, send me a private message and I'll give you an address where you can send one of the files as an attachment and I'll confirm the version for you.

I have a mac, In"Design CS 5.5, a design gave me a file said it was CS 6, does not open in CS 5.5..Message says "Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign."  I think I need to buy upgrade from 5.5 to 6. I found one on NextTechDirect for $150 to download. they are not a scam according to "scamadvisor.com."
When I drag the InDesign file that that was supplied by another designer who said it was  CS 6 onto my desktop it says CS 5.5. Is that because I only have CS 5.5?
    Should I buy this
Adobe InDesign CS6 Upgrade from CS5.5 WIN/MAC [Download] from Next tech....it is obviosly higher on the adobe site and alot of other places?

No one is likely to recommend where you buy your software from other than Adobe in these forums... not so much because of support for Adobe, but mostly because of lack of support/knowledge of any third party vendors.  I only know from experience that when you invest in bargain pricing you usually get what you pay for.

  • Error "Could not open [filename]...Please upgrade your plug-ins

A collegue send us an CS4 InDesign file and when I opened, it says this:
Error "Could not open [filename]. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest of Adobe InDesign."
Any suggestion? I also have CS4 installed.

I see. Thanks for the help. I just confirmed with the sender of this file and it seems that she has CS5 installed. So, I can that you're right that it's a CS5 file.
    Thanks, again.

What can I do for open those indd. ??? tx

what patch? i have to get a patch for each version THEY have? my editor sent me an indesign file from an older version also and could not open that.
after much searching, i did what some suggeted and bought SOXY software for $20, acting like a filter, and it worked great this weekend, not sure if the OTHERS will be able to RE-open the files but that's their business, i guess. i'm angry at adobe for not having a go-between for this. i've been advised to NOT go searching after the long list of plug-ins but if you know of a patch or update that will fix these i would be eternally grateful!
    thanks!

  • InCopy CS4 and InDesign CS4 cannot open file at the same time!

I have 2 editors that make changes in my indd file. The one editor is able to open the file concurrently with myself (i'm in indesign) just fine. But when the other editor wants to open the file....I cannot open the indd file and vice versa. We are PC based.
    shane

Yes, we are all working on the same server.
And Yes on the Editor A / scenario 1  (Designer opens file and Editor A opens file concurrently). works fine.
Editor A closes out of Incopy and so does Designer. Editor B opens the file and Designer tries to open the indd file and now the designer gets the warning: Cannot open document. You may not have permission or the document may be open already. This is the same error if the Designer opens the file first and Editor B tries to open it while the designer has it open.
Editor A and B are able to have the file open at the same time no problem.
Also this happens to all indd files that Editor B tries to open. So it is not linked to a problem with the file.
one other note: on the server just above the indd file...when Editor B has the indd open in InCopy... a 'temporary' Indesign Lock File appears.

  • InDesign Cs4 "Cannot Open File"

Trying to open a .idd file with Cs4, but receive this message.  I have checked to make sure I have all updates and I do.  If this file was made in Cs5 or Cs6, it should still be compatible with Cs4.  Can anyone give me some advice?

My guess is it's a CS6 file since it mentions form fields in the list, but you can use Jongware's tool to find out: Adobe Forums: [Ann] Identify Your InDesign File
Your OS cannot identify a file as anything newer than the most recent version you've installed, which leads to a lot of confusion, and no, newer versions are not backward compatible -- never have been in ID. To move files back to earlier versions they must be exported as interchange format files from the version where they were saved. Since CS4 that has been .idml, and all versions of ID since CS4 can read .idml exported from any version, but unsupported features from newer documetns will be lost and text will probably reflow, so you shouldn't have any expectations of a perfect conversion.

  • CS4 cannot open CS4 file - upgrade plugins

I HAVE searched the forum, but cannot find a real answer to this...
I've been given an .indd file. It was created in CS4. I am attempting to open it with CS4.
I get that message "Cannot open "name.indd". Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign"
I have the latest upgrade of CS4, as does the author of the document. I see the plugins in the Plug-Ins folder.
What do I need to do to be able to open this file? (Actually there are about 20 of these "unopenable" documents)
    Thanks!
(I am new to InDesign. My company uses Quark.)

    OK. It's posted at:

  • Upgrade Plug-ins error (Cannot Open File)

I was working on a document in CS3 as a final thesis for my masters work. I was using a Blurb template in order to export the file for printing. In between working on the file, one afternoon I could no longer open the file and was met with the follwing error:
    Cannot Open File
    IMAGE.RPLN
    IMAGE FILTERS.RPLN
    HYPERLINKS.RPLN
    "Cannot open "Masters_book dec.indd".
Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest
versions, or upgrade to the latest version of
    Adobe InDesign."
I hadn't changed any other files on my computer or ran any updates. I was simply met with the error when I tried launching the application. After trying to run necessary updates I was still met with the same error message. I downloaded the trial version of CS5 on another machine and tried to open it and was once again met with the above error message. I have a back up of the file that I can use but it still represents a lot of lost work if I have to resort to an old file.

I probably shouldn't dwell, on this, but I can get really worked up over it.
I come from the Cosmos and I can assure you we have sent no "Rays" to your puny Earth Planet today!(*)
Since this concerns a CS3 file and I haven't seen posts of others having the same issue, either with CS3 or with any other version, I have to take it as a One-Time Fluke.
I'm pretty firmly convinced this never happens. There are real problems and even if we only see them once, they are happening hundreds and thousands of times and going unreported and undetected, but they are no less real. In fact, because of the reporting bias towards repeatable problems, they are probably causing added frustration and confusion without being detected or fixed properly. So, IMNSHO, we owe a larger duty to pay attention to so-called "unreproducible" bugs.
(You can imagine how well these conversations with Adobe Support go...)
Of course, in this case, it's probably really hard to find the problem. And since it's effectively an end-of-life'd product that is 3 versions behind the released product and at least 4 versions behind the development product, well, it's hard to lose too much sleep over it.
(*) Yes, I know, this incident would not have been "today." Consider it time dilation.

  • Plug-ins - "Cannot open File"

I  have received a file from overseas which looks like the CS5 indesign icon, but which I cannot open through my CS5 indesign software. The message SHAREDCONTENT.RPLN first appears and then after clicking OK to open anyway, Cannot Open File appears with a list of missing plug-ins. The message reads: Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Indesign. I have not been able to find these plug-ins online and I'm not financially able to upgrade just yet! Any ideas anyone?

Another alternative that you can use, is ask for the IDML version of the document along with the assets like images and fonts used in the original document. You can open IDML version of the document in CS4, CS5, CS5.5 AND CS6 versions of InDesign.
Once open just relink the images sent as assets to you and place the fonts in the required folder and you are all set to use your doucment, save the document in the INDD format and you have your InDesign file. This will be an easy way for you as it will save you installation time for ID CS5.5 and also allow you to not upgrade and buy a license for it if you don't require it.
    Thanks,

  • Cannot Open File on InDesign 5

    Hi
I am trying to open an indesign file using CS 5 and an error come sup saying: "Cannot open "file name". Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign."
Above that it has a list that looks like this
    TEXT.RPLN
    GENERIC PAGE.RPLN
    GRAPHICS.RPLN
    XML.RPLN
    HYPERLINKS.RPLN
    FORMFIELD.RPLN
    DOCUMENT FRAMEWORK.RPLN
    DYNAMICDOCUMENTS.RPLN
Where do I find these plug-ins?

Peter, sorry. I was not intending to insult any of you forum people, and I do appreciate your comments. I was just frustrated at Adobe's lack of assistance, even when I call tech support. Very abrupt, and not helpful at all.
That said, you might like to hear the next bit of news:  after our exchange on Monday, I was disgusted and left the software alone for a day. Then yesterday I was using Illustrator, and that dratted Acrobat Reader had again assigned itself to my pdf files. I changed it again, and shut down Illustrator, ready to try again to get some information from the forum and tackle the InDesign problem again. Lo and behold, InDesign suddenly works again!!
I have no idea what fixed it (and I've been checking to see that it still works - sort of like checking if the baby is breathing!! - and so far so good. I'm absolutely stunned. Again, the problem didn't resolve after I used 'speedy pc' but only after I told Acrobat Reader XI that it wasn't the default reader.
Any idea what Acrobat is telling the rest of the programs to make that happen? Or, if not that, any idea at all what would have caused the 'transparency.rpln not loaded' error message? The only other thing I can think of is maybe the buffer got overloaded, or not enough room on the hard drive or overloaded ram chips. Any of that make sense in your experience?

  • CAN'T OPEN FILE. must upgrade plugins or to latest version?

    hi all
    im new to Indesign.
im trying to open files sent by client.
    we both use CS2 version.
When i go to open the file, I get a message box CANNOT OPEN FILE.
then there's a large list of things ending in .framework
and underneeth is a "!" and the message : cannopt open file.indd. Please upgrade
your plug ins to t heir latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of adobe indesign.
how do I do this? is it free somewhere?
    Please advice
    thank u

Make sure you are fully upgraded to the latest update of InDeisgn. I believe that is 4.0.5.688. And make sure your client really is using CS2 and not CS3. If they are using CS3 have them export an INX file for you. If you are certain they are using CS2 and problems continue, try the INX route anyway.
It is a very bad idea to continually transfer files between CS2 and CS3 users. If it turns out the client has CS3 then you should try to limit file transfers as much as possible or upgrade to CS3 yourself. You can install a free 30 day demo, which might last you long enough to finish this job.

  • Unable to open documents because of missing plug ins

I am unable to open documents in CS3 (version 5.04)
    I am getting a message:"Missing Plug Ins: Conditional Text.InDesignPlugIn, WorldReady.InDesignPlugin.
The document "xxxxx.indd" uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?"
If I click on OK I get another window, stating "Cannot Open File", a list of all kind of missing Plugins and the message "Cannot open "xxxxx.indd". Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign.
I don't want to switch to CS4 and as far as I know version 5.04 of CS3 is the latest.
Any ideas of what I could do to get the latest PlugINs or anything else that would help?
    Thank you!
    Anne

Probably, but it's 100% not necessary when going from CS4 to CS3. It might be a case of 'half read, then half-understood'.
As this is a really frequent question and there are still no sticky posts: anyone up for a "feature request" that makes InDesign check the version number before opening? (Of course that wouldn't work backwards to CS3. Still, it'd avoid these kind of posts when CS6 comes out. Note: not CS5, because that would have no problems opening CS4, but CS4 would have problems with Cs5! Oh, for planning ahead ...  )
