In Design CS 6 crashing on resizing a text frame

Some specifics:
2 MACs networked via cable directly connecting the two.
one MAC Pro 12GB RAM 10.6 OS
one Imac 16GB RAM 10.8 OS (this replaced another MAC Pro that we were told had a bad RAM controller when we started experiencing this odd crashing)
I have built a 10 page document that is part of a book. This document has been working fine until today. I saved the file yesterday and came back to it today to do some more work. Everything was going along as expected until I came to a particular text frame. Every time I try to resize or delete this text frame ID crashes. I've also noticed that if I add a text frame after (next page) the problematic text frame ID crashes. Recovery says it's recovering but the file crashes in the same way after the file is reopened. I can move all the other text frames around and do other things, but when I adjust that text frame ... crash.
If I move the problem text frame off the page, onto the workspace I can do anything I want to the frame, but, if I move it back to the page where it came and adjust it ID crashes.
This (mysterious corruption) has happened many times over the last year or two. Not always a text frame, deleting something, moving something, small things you wouldn't think would crash the app. I think the problems started with either 5 or 5.5 ... or possibly an OS update ... or both. We've used ID for five / six years now and this issue wasn't happening before 5 or 5.5.
Exporting to IDML results in the same problem. (clarification: I can make the adjustments to the text frame in 5.5 to the IDML file. Saved back to an INDD file, open in 6, and the problem returns.)
Resetting prefs doesn't change this behavior with the corrupt file.
Problem file crashes ID on both computers.
Thoughts? Questions?

Is the 8.0.1 patch for ID installed?
Have you tried Remove minor corruption by exporting?
If that doesn't work (and I suspect it won't, but do try it), you mentioned you can move the frame to the pasteboard. Can you delete it from there? How about if you unlink it from the text thread (click the outport of the frame before it, then clikc inside that same frame to break the thread at that point). If you can delete the frame you should be able to add a new frame and relink if the frame iteslf is corrupt. If that doesn't work, try exporting the story to InDesign Tagged Text, then re-import it replacing what's there.

  • How to make a text variable (running header - character) resize a text frame?

    I have successfully been able to get a metadata text variable to auto-resize a text frame, but when I change the text variable to a running header-character/paragraph variable, the text frame does not resize - in fact it gets smaller and squashes the text.
    Surely if Indesign can handle one kind of variable it should handle another??
    Please help!

    Thanks all.
    Will- I tried adding another character to the text box but this made no difference.
    Eugene- I'm trying to avoid the purchase of any 3rd party plugins due to budget constraints.
    I realised that all I needed to do was use a wide paragraph rule to emulate a box behind the text, and make the text box long enough to hold all possible variables.
    One other issue has now cropped up, the running header (character) only grabs the text up to the first return, but I need it to grab all text formatted with the Character Style (2-3 lines max).
    I require a forced line break in the title (where the header is being pulled from) as it has a paragraph rule style attached, requiring a full return for each line of the title.
    Any ideas?

  • How to resize margins / text frames for a whole book?

    Hello, I am new to InDesign, but not Adobe software. I am trying to use InDesign to produce a book I have written for a university course I teach. I have 33 documents all together as an InDesign book. After I printed out some test pages I thought there should be more white space on all sides. I changed the margins by 5mm in the master page on the master document and then synced the book. Now the MARGINS have changed on all the documents, but the TEXT FRAMES remain unchanged. I know that I can change text frame sizes, by hand, but that would take forever. I can't find how I can automatically resize a whole book. Is this not possible?
    Craig

    Before synching, you need to enable layout adjustment in each document (Layout > Layout adjustment). Since you have 33 documents, you might want to run this little script to do it for you:
    for (i = 0; i < app.documents.length; i++)
    app.documents[i].layoutAdjustmentPreferences.enableLayoutAdjustment = true;
    Open all the documents where Layout adjustment should be enabled and run the script.

  • Indesign CS 5.5 & CS 6 Text Frame Resize Crushing app

    I have a document that crushes indesgn CS5 & CS 6 when trying to resize a text frame. I have tried to export the document to IDML and it crushes. I can't even export to PDF.
    This is an annual report which needs to go for printing in 24hours. I have tried to get support from Adobe and currently wondering what is the next step for our group of companies affected by this huge mess.
    My TS case no is 183647068.

    We're just ordinary users, like you.
    When things go this badly south I would try exporting each story to InDesign Tagged Text (and if that also fails, Try RTF), then place the exported stories into a new file.

  • Option to auto-resize text frame vertically?

    Hi,
    Sometimes I don't know exactly how tall a text frame is going to be or I just want to get some text on the page quickly without drawing it out exactly.  I was wondering if there was an option to auto-resize the text frame vertically as you type.  Has anyone heard of such an option?  Thanks!

    This commercial InDesign plug-in can do it:

  • InDesign freezes when resizing text frames

    I've placed a Word document with lots of tables and other graphics, and when I try to resize a text frame, InDesign frequently freezes. I have to shut it down in Task Manager and restart, often losing a lot of work. This happened once before with a similar project from the same client. I thought maybe it was some odd corruption in that file, so I muscled through it, but here it is happening again. Anybody have this issue before and know how to resolve or prevent it?
    I'm working with CS6 in Windows 8.
    Thanks.
    ~Valerie

    First of all, ID CS6 has a auto-recovery feature, so when closing it in the task manager you should not loose a lot of work, but the one since the last auto-save.
    However, software is not prefect, so the one way to prevent it would be to place a PDF version of your Word file, making it uneditable.

  • In Design CS5.5 crashes when importing/placing a image

    In Design CS5.5 crashes when importing/placing a image

    Just for good measure, create a new user on your computer and test in that user. If it fails, you have a software conflict of some sort or you need to reinstall. If it works, you still have some sort of problem in the original user.

  • Action Item causes Design Editor to crash

    Dear All,
    I faced a problem that I couldn't find a solution for neither here, nor at Metalink.
    Then after several trial and error, tedious efforts, I found the solution for it, and thought I'd share this knowledge with everyone.
    When adding an action item to a module component, if the "Relative Tab Stop Editor" is set to Parent, the Design Editor will crash while trying to generate the form, without any error message, it will just close.
    You have to set the "Relative Tab Stop Editor" for the module (sub module) component to None or Self.
    I hope that this would help someone, and if anyone finds that I was mistaken in my findings, please let me know.
    p.s. I was using Design Editor ver. 9.0.4.5.6 which I believe is the latest with no additional patches required.

    If you have changed a number of objects in diagrams, you need to click on Edit, Requery All, so that any changes will be committed and retrieve the latest objects from the central repository. If you do not requery, it sometimes exit Designer during run-time.

  • Why does Preview automatically resize the text box to cut off the last character of added text? How do I fix it?

    Why does Preview automatically resize the text box to cut off the last character of added text? How do I fix it?
    I use the Tools > Annotate > Add Text feature, and when I click away after adding text, it automatically changes the text box size such that the last letter -- or last word -- gets bumped off into an invisible line below it, forcing me to manually adjust every single text box. It is highly annoying when trying to complete PDF forms (e.g. job applications).
    It appears to be a glitch, quite honestly, an error resulting from Apple's product design. Has it been fixed in the new operating system (for which they want $30)?
    I would very much appreciate any help you can provide! Thank you for your time.

  • How to resize JTextArea when frame has been resized

    Hi!
    At first, I have to complain, that these Layout Managers drive me crazy. Even as an experienced developer, very often, I am frustrated and I am never 100% sure which layout manager I should choose (according to the Sun How Tos) and once I have decided, the never do what I'd expect them to do. I'm not sure if I am just too dumb or if there might be an unreasonable API architecture/design...
    OK, here again is a problem with layouts. And it's basically like this (See code for details):
    Row one: Text Area 1, Button 1; Row two: Text Area 2, Button 2.
    I just want to have the buttons aligned, the text areas should be same sized. Moreover, I want to disable vertical resizing and on horizontal resizing, I want the TextArea to be resized as well.
    But it doesn't. I could partly solve the vertical resizing by setting the minimum size, but the maximum size dosen't seem to work. I can still enlarge the window. The horizontal resizing doesn't work at all. I tried border layout before and set the Text area as center, but it also doesn't work. I read that some layout managers use only preferred size, some also use min and max size and this is very confusing.
    And I saw that component resizing should work for box layout as well (see Sun box layout how to). If this problem is easy to solve, please excuse my question, but I couldn't find it in the forum.
    OK, here is an SSCCE:

    This is what I get using TableLayout:
    The maximum horizontal size of the text area is achieved by specifying the columns in the constructor,
    although I think it's bad since resizing smaller does reduce the text area. I would use FILL constraint for the text area column and remove the 'filler' column at the end.
    import info.clearthought.layout.TableLayout;
    import java.awt.EventQueue;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class TestLayout {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run() {
                    TableLayout layout = new TableLayout(new double[][] {
                            // columns
                            { TableLayout.PREFERRED, TableLayout.PREFERRED,
                               TableLayout.FILL },
                            // rows
                            { TableLayout.PREFERRED, TableLayout.FILL,
                              TableLayout.PREFERRED, TableLayout.FILL },
                    JPanel panel = new JPanel(layout);
                    panel.add(new JScrollPane(new JTextArea(3, 30)), "0,0,0,1");
                    panel.add(new JButton("One"), "1,0");
                    panel.add(new JScrollPane(new JTextArea(3, 30)), "0,2,0,3");
                    panel.add(new JButton("Two"), "1,2");
                    JFrame frame = new JFrame("Test");
                    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE);
                    frame.getContentPane().add(panel);
                    frame.pack();
                    frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
                    frame.setVisible(true);
    }Ah, in your code you have text fields, not area and want to restrict vertical resize. Then I get this:
    TableLayout layout = new TableLayout(new double[][] {
                            // columns
                            { TableLayout.FILL, TableLayout.PREFERRED },
                            // rows
                            { TableLayout.PREFERRED, TableLayout.PREFERRED,
                                TableLayout.FILL, TableLayout.PREFERRED },
                    layout.setVGap(5);
                    layout.setHGap(5);
                    JPanel panel = new JPanel(layout);
                    panel.setBorder(BorderFactory.createEmptyBorder(5, 5, 5, 5));
                    panel.add(new JTextField(30), "0,0");
                    panel.add(new JButton("One"), "1,0");
                    panel.add(new JTextField(30), "0,1");
                    panel.add(new JButton("Two"), "1,1");
                    panel.add(new JLabel("Status"), "0,3,1,3");Another more advanced layout to look at is MigLayout.

  • Muse Pages don't resize to text content

    Hi,  I'm new to Muse and am stuck on the following:
    Muse Pages don't resize to text content
    This is a link to the site page in question: ABOUT  |  Total Clothing Solutions
    The shopping basket widget does not affect the page, it does the same without it.
    many thanks in advance
    Kind Regards Gem

    Hmm... I think we'll need a screenshot or a bit more explanation in order to help. Here's what that webpage looks like for me. Without knowing more of what's it's supposed to look like, it's difficult to know what's not working as you're expecting?  Thanks.
    If you're using Object > Insert HTML, you need to size the HTML object to the height the HTML will be in the browser. The output generated by Muse will attempt to maintain the distance from the bottom of the HTML object to the top of the first object that's lower down on the page after the HTML expands to it's full size in the browser. Therefore if you don't resize the HTML object to its expected final height, or larger, in Muse Design view, there will be a large gap below it in the browser. It sounds like that may be what you are/were seeing? Even though I don't see that on this page.

  • Is there a way to automatically resize the text box to fit the text inside, without using the selection tool to resize the corners in Illustrator and Photoshop?

    I'm wondering if there is a way where I can quickly resize a text box to fit exactly around the text inside, so pretty much the smallest the text box can go without being too small to fit the text? I know you can do this manually with the selection tool, but is there a button/command that automatically does this in one go?
    Thanks

    Trying to resize a text box, but the up/ down/ diagonal arrows won't move to resize!  How do I edit that please?

    You can also fine tune the Text Box (or Shape) size using the Arrange tab and Size section. Notice the constrain proportions checkbox.
    Otherwise, what Peter said, and if you press the shift key while clicking on that lower-right Text Box grip, you will see a diagonal, yellow dotted line that serves as a proportional drag guide to scale the box.
