In desperate need for help - Lag spikes through a wired connection

Hello. I've recently started experiencing random lag spikes. I have no idea what the cause of these could be. I've used this router for almost 2 yrs now and never ran into a problem. I've done extensive searches and updated my old firmware to the new one following the strict intructions. I've also been trying to figure out how to log my network to provide more information on my situation. I've downloaded kiwisyslogd but have no idea how to use it... Any help with that would also be greatly appreciated.

EXTRA INFO - I called my isp (cox) and they told me everything on their line is fine. I'm running on a 15mb line. Internet connection works and everything else is fine except for periodic lag spikes that really interupt my gaming and web browsing severly.
router: wrt54g v2
Firmware: DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) std then reverted back to linksys latest firmware... still no solution.
Tried isolating the router out of the equation. Connected pc directly to the modem and had no problems. Connected the router back in and lag spikes came back. Pc is connected through ethernet wire.
Tried disabling windows wireless zero service - no help
Pinging a game server i tested the lag at. No problems when I pinged the server with the router. But when I joined the server with the game. I experience the lag spikes. Could this mean its not my router? When I plug the modem directly to my pc this problem doesn't happen.

IN DESPERATE NEED FOR HELP flashing question mark appears MacBook

Hello everyone, I got this White MacBook Mac OS X 10.4.11 yesturday I was updating limewire and iTunes, I was downloading some songs from Limewire when all of a sudden my macbook frozed. I was not able to do a thing. Not even minimizing nor quiting the app nor even opening another aplication, so I decided to shut it down by holding the power button until it shut down (about 8 secs). So I restart my macbook and I got this grey=blank screen whit a flashing question mark on it. I've tried EVERYTHING on this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440?viewlocale=en_US even these one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533 and all I was able to accomplish, was to hold the mouse (/trackpad) button to eject a Cd, and while pressing Shift during startup (in order to start in Safe Boot mode) all I get is this lock image and this space to type a password. I've tried typing every password I know and I can't fix my macbook. Can anyone please help me out on this one?

It means certain system files needed for startup are corrupted. You will have to reinstall OS X. If your hard drive is unaffected you can try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

In Desperate need for help with Security Settings

I am currrently working on a project that requires a Flash
submenu running through an HTML Browser window and running from a
CD. The problem is that the final destination for these CDs will be
on computers without the capability to connect to the internet. So,
when the user gets the popup requiring them to change the security
setting in order to use the flash element, which is through the
internet (the dumbest way of doing this) they have no choice but to
decline the popup and therfore cannot use the flash submenu.
Is there a way to automatically be trusted whitiout the use
of the internet "security settings" window???????? If anyone from
Adobe/Macromedia read this please be advise that this should really
change to be computer based and not requiring an internet
connection.
If this is esay enough to change, I regret everything that I
am thinking of about Adobe/Macromedia at the time I writing this.

When Exporting, you get the option of setting the Local
Playback security (very bottom of the Export dialogue box). Have
you checked to make sure you have yours set to "Access local files
only"?

In desperate need for help on Gingerbread upgrade

I have an unrooted D2 Global and tried to upgrade to 2.3 yesterday. I did download this stupid update but it just wouldn't install. The install bar would stop at 20-30% and then reboot, and then tell me the upgrade fail. I downloaded the patch for over 6 times already. I tried clearing the cache and everything else. I didn't try SBF as I don't think that's necessary yet.
Could anyone help me solve this problem?Thanks a lot!
I am thinking about going back to iPhone after this one. My experience with Android has compelled me to stay away from this danger software.

You just answered your question, you rooted and removed bloatware and now your device isn't stock and this is why the update will not load, it detects that you changed your device and wont install..
By the way you do know that the method you used to remove the apps voids warranty and breaches Verizon TOS....
The method to resolve this should be located at the location you received the unauthorized software, no disrespect but it may be wise to research what you are doing to your device before modifying it in this method because you can not get support on the Service Providers site when they do not support the method.
Just something to consider... Google is your best solution...

Why does apple tv 2 lose connection with netgear router through a wired connection?

I have Apple TV 2 connected to a Netgear wnder3700 through a wired connection. The Apple TV is up-to-date. However, from day 1 (before firmware updates and currently) apple tv will lose internet connection. All other devices on the network remain connected. the only solution is to physically unplug the the apple tv and let it reconnect on reboot. Same issue exists on a wireless connection.

Well Java is not broken.
The Java program you are running is broken.
But we don't know what it is doing and where it is broken. Only the people with the source for the program (puzzlepirates) can help you.
It is not my fault if they won't help you or told you Java is broken.

something else is wrong on my computerAs a wild guess there is something wrong with the DNS on your machine or proxy or something like that. This is a guess based on the UnknownHostException. But again that is only a guess and the best guess one can make based on the information present.
The problem I think is that their applet tries to do something but doesn't account for connections like yours and is blowing up because of that.
Again only a guess and in the end really does nothing to solve your problem. If you want to solve this problem email the stack trace and perhaps my comments in this post about the UnknownHostException to puzzlepirates and ask them for help.
Nobody else can help you but them.

Breaking News: Palm Pre loses customers contact lists and finds entertainment in ignoring desperate cries for help!

I wish the subject matter was not true , but it is. I lost all my company contacts last week and have been pleading for help from Palm for over a week, I have already written a link based on Minkas complaint. I have heard stories about bad servers ect ect through the grapevine but the bottom line is , no matter what has happened....Palm has not honored any of the 3 promises to call me back that had been arranged at a Sprint Store with the help of the employees over the speaker phone, I head the promise, the employees heard the promise and over a week later I still have not heard back from Palm. I have lost important business contacts for my labor supply, my material supply and a handfull of contacts that I can not replace because they are not in the phone book....Bottom line, Palm does not care about you or the company your run, the support is lacking and almost comical...can you believe I was told the only way to contact or make a complaint about the company is to write a blog....If somebody has an issue with my personal products they can talk to me 24 hours a day, yet Palm has no such contact or even a official form I can fill out....THE ONLY WAY TO FILE A COMPLAINT IS BY A BLOGG....and hope somebody reads about this at Palm and cares enough to call back....this company acts like they believe in witchcraft and the only way they can handle a issue is that it must be delivered to them by devine intervention....I have never complained about a product in my life, but I bought this phone to help my business and what I got was abandoned, ignored and left to rot while they continously ignore me and my situation. Here are some things you should get used to if you have a problem with Palms products..1. Wait 72 hours and a level 3 or 4 tech will call you back but they do not 2. We will escalate your problem and you will be called back in 72 hours or less but they wont. 3. No, you may not contact the CEO of the company or anybody in authority. 4. If you have a complaint u have to write a blog because nobody specializes ln complaints about service. To anybody who has lost a contact list from palm my deepest sympathies go out to you. Be prepared to be ignored and dismissed by Palm. Today is Sunday November 9 and this is the 9th day I have waited for a call back from a level 3 tech but I want to share with you what happened today. I actually got a call from Palm but it was not from a tech...after pleading with the online help last night and explaining I have been ignored and need to speak to a tech person guess who called me ? It was the standard help line that you can call listed on this website...He had no clue at all how to help but promised me again (This would be promise 5 from online chat help and Im still also on promise 3 given at the Sprint store) needless to say he said that because of the serious nature of my request and the time I have waited he would talk to his manager and make sure I was contacted today...I waited and once again received no call back but what was really disturbing was he told me that the Sprint manager and the 2 employees that assisted me at the store were a bunch of liars. He told me no calls were ever made to Palm, even though we all listened on the speaker phone to the Palm representative each of the 3 times I went back to the store for help....I go to the store on greenback in citrus heights, Ca each time they have been fantastic in trying to help me and each time they have spent 30-40 minutes trying to clear my problems up and at the end of each conversation they make Palm promise to call me back with a level 3 or 4 tech. So...today they not only lie to me again but they call the employees at Sprint a bunch of liars telling me that no records of a call back have ever been made...once again Palm continues to abandon the customer and also offer up Sprint as the sacrificial lamb. As bad as the problem is, I noticed some disturbing facts again ( I am now on my 3rd palm pre in 3 months) My problems started over a week ago when all info was lost.Once I had the drive wiped and only got 6 contacts back.I actually entered 3 new contacts on my phone by hand ( I do use any Google or any other site ect) long story short I got a new phone on Friday the 6th of November because of constant lock up and inability to answer...when I downloaded my Palm profile it downloaded only 6 contacts again (they lost aprox 90) but it once again lost the 3 new contacts I had in my phone for 5 days ( and yes all autoback ups were on) I see more and more people are having these problems and I want to let you know that Palm does not care about you or any issues you have that require level 3 help.( Please note if you look up level 3 help at Palm its refers you to a webpage about Santa Clause....because neither exist)..you should take a deep breath, get in line and hope maybe you will be luckier than I have been...I really saw the writing on the wall when they started calling Sprint a bunch of liars....I think Palm is pulling off the biggest pyramid scheme the industry has seen in years. They got the money and now they are nowhere to be found. Here is the bottom line once again...Something is still wrong on the servers...they continue to lose contact information and they know they have a problem. I speak the truth when I say this... Palm does not care about you or your business, If your really serious about your business and your responsible for the income of employees and families you should avoid Palm at all costs. After 9 Days of Begging for help I feel like a total chump for trusting Palm and believing in this company.

Hi, our broadband at home is stupidly slow. Especially the wireless. It feels like im running dial up from ten years ago.
The problem has been ongoing for a long time, but i've only just returned home from uni, hence why it has taken me so long to ask for help.
After reading on the forums about the shoddy service the india call centre gives, i decided it would be best to try the forums first.
The internet is consistently slow, and it also seems to reach speeds of 0 kb/s at times, sometimes disconnecting me, other times not.
These are my ADS stats, i will add my test results from the bt speed checker once it has finished. FAST RESPONSES WOULD BE LOVED! My net even died from trying to post this, and its the only thing im running.

Your line stats look great, your sync speed is good, and your IP profile is correct.
Your download speed is poor.
This could be :
1) Hot Virtual Path at the exchange - basically your exchange has run out of bandwidth. Do you get similar poor download speeds at all times of day and night? If you get much faster speeds in the early morning or during the daytime, then you need the help of the forum moderators.
2) Your WiFi connection is not working properly. Do you get similar poor download speeds when connected to the HomeHub via an ethernet cable? It is worth trying if you haven't done so.
3) Are you totally sure you don't have any other devices connected to your WiFi connection dragging down your bandwidth? Go the the "Home Network" tab in the HomeHub admin screens and see what is connected
4) Are you signed up with BT FON? I wonder if other people are connecting to your hub and sucking up your bandwidth? (this can cost 0.5 Mbps) Are you living in / near a very public area?

What adapter do I need for my ipod Nano 7th Generation to connect to a Sony home docking station (30 pin). I purchased the one recommended (Lightning to 30 pin adapter), but it says 'this accessory is not supported by this device)?

Could someone please tell me the correct lead I need for an Applie Ipod 7th Generation 16GB for a Sony docking station. I bought a Lightning to 30 pin adaptor that fits the dock but not the ipod (this was recommended to me by someone from the Apple shop believe it or not). I need one that will fit the ipod and then slot into the 30 pin dock. The dock pulls out and my old ipod (5th Generation) just slotted straight in, but this slot obviously doesn't fit. It would really help if someone can recommend what I need to use or even if there is one that just slots in or whether I need some sort of cable and can't use the docking station. I've had a lock at the Apple store but just keep getting confused about what does what and can't seem to see anything unless I need an additional cable to slot into the 30 pin adapter I already have?

You need to contact Sony and see if they model you have is compatible with the docking adapter. It may not be.

Instructions for extending a wireless network through a wired connection

These are the instructions for extending a wireless network by wiring two airports together.
The benefit of this is to provide a strong signal in more locations in your home or business.
The advantage of this technique over WDS is that the wired connection is faster and more reliable.
These instructions assume you have a) an existing wireless network setup using an airport , b) a new airport that you want to add to your network, c) you can run a cat 5 cable between the two airports, and d) you are familiar with the airport utility.
If while using these instructions you are prompted to update your airport firmware please do so.
1) Gather the following information from your existing Airport on the Summary tab of Airport utility:
a) Wireless Network Name
b) Wireless Security
c) You will also need the password, which hopefully you just know.
2) Plug in your new Airport, connect it to the existing Airport using a cat 5 cable.
3) Reset the new Airport using the tip of a paper clip. On my Airport Express that is next to the audio out.
4) After a short wait the new Airport should appear in Airport Utility with a generic name.
5) Click the new airport and click "Manual Setup". You may have to cancel out of some popups to get to the Manual Setup button.
6) On the "Base Station" tab set a "Name" that does NOT equal the the name of your old Aiport. Also set the password. This us the password that one uses to make changes to the setup of the Airport.
7) On the "Wireless" table set a "Wireless Network Name", "Wireless Security", and "Password" to exactly match that of your old Airport. This is the password that one uses to gain access to the network.
8) On the "Internet->Internet Connection" tab set connection sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
9) Click "Update" at bottom right of Airport Utility.
10) Test by using "Advanced->Logging and Stats->Wireless Clients" to see which clients are connecting to which Airport.

I assume that there is a tv in your media center so what would make much more sense would be to get a coax splitter and split the coax at that tv and then move the vz westell router to the other side of the splitter. It really makes no matter where the westell router is on the coax setup and doing this should allow you to connect your devices directly to the router.
So the coax feed from the ONT comes in through the garage into the office and is connected to the Westell in the office (which is hard-wired into my office PC). If I move the Westell to the entertainment center I'll be in the same boat w/ my office PC then, i.e. needing a wireless connection to the Westell to get internet access. Am I missing something here?

Why does HBO Go need to buffer during streaming with a wired connection?

I have Verizon FiOS with 75/35 Mbps speed. When streaming HBO Go with a wired connection programming is intermittently interrupted for buffering; Apple TV is connected to an LG flat screen through a Yamaha receiver via HDMI cabling. I had this issue while streaming wirelessly despite full 5 bar signal strength to Apple TV from the FiOS router.
Any thoughts? Software is up to date.

In RMI, to pass through Http to bypass firewall or through proxy sever, we can use either Http to port or Http to CGI/Servlet i.e., Http tunneling.
In the same, I am running a simple corba application, i want my corba application to pass through my proxy server using http which is configured to address 127.0.0.1 and port 8118.
How to pass my corba application through proxy server. please help me and it is very urgent.

Help needed for using BASIC authentication through JDBCRealm

I am doing a degree project, so far it works fine in my local machine, I need to try it on my virtual hosting (as it is a live server).
My project requires JDBCRealm, that is BASIC authentication loading access data from mysql database. Normally this setup can be done in Server.xml file, because my Tomcat hosting is a virtual one, I only have permission to access the web.xml file.
My question is: is it possible to get it done in an alternative way? In web.xml? Some properties file maybe?

You can set this up for your context using META-INF/context.xml instead of working with server.xml.
Make a directory called META-INF under your webapp ( it'll be at the same level as WEB-INF ). Under this, add a context.xml with all your context specific configuration including the realm. A sample is below

Desperate need of HELP for a Java GUI !

Hy people,
I am working on a project trying to display a GUI where its output is dependant on the user's input.
Here is a brief example of what Im trying to do:
You have a GUI that contains 2 panels. buttonPanel and DisplayPanel.
buttonPanel contains:
a dropdown list: includes choices of colors,
2 textfields: the length: (can enter from 1 to 100),
the width: (can enter from 1 to 100),
a checkbox: random
and a start button.
Now when I enter ALL the information needed in the components and then press start button, it should display its result in the DisplayPanel.
In my case, I want to display just one rectangle to start off. That will have its color changed by the dropdown choice made. Now Im forgetting about the length and width textfield for now cause that will be incorporated for something else later on.
I created a buttonLitener for the start button and an ItemListener for the dropDown List.
I declared and drew a rectangle specific to the color chosen by the user in a class I created called DrawingCanvas that extends Canvas and that overrides the paint method.
BUT My problem is that it does not display the rectangle I created in my DisplayPanel when I press on the Start button.
I provided a screenshot of the GUI interface, and my 2 java files. Is someone brave enough to fix my problem or even tell me what Im doing wrong ?!

It is probably better to post code directly on the forum than to try to get people to take the extra steps to download, unzip, and compile your code. That way, they can just cut and paste to try to compile. Be sure to use [code][/code] tags to make your code easier to use. And, try to provide a small example of your problem if the code is very long or complex.
Another piece of advice. Don't try to challenge the regulars in this forum to prove that they are smart enough, brave enough, whatever enough to tackle YOUR problem. The regulars here include software engineers, authors, and generally very smart and experienced people They don't need to prove themselves to anyone.
What they want to see is that you have genuinely tried to understand your problem, rather than just running to the forum the first time you get a compiler error.
You seem to have been working on this problem. Go ahead and create a test case that shows what the problem is. Quite frequently, just doing that will help you solve the problem yourself.
