In diagrams in airport utility, what do dotted and solid lines mean?

is there a guide to the utility?

Sorry, no real guide exists. The dotted lines represent wireless connection. Solid lines represent wired ones.

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

Reboot the modem. Just pull the power for a few seconds. No settings are lost.  The laptop getting through to the internet is not relevent.

  • Airport utility only shows disc and not airplay

airport utility only shows disc and not airplay

Actually......IF......one is using an older 5.x version of AirPort Utility......AND.....an AirPort Express, a Music icon is displayed at the top of the screen. If you click the Music icon, there are settings to enable AirPlay and establish a password for the service.
The newer Mac 6.x and iPad and iPhone versions of AirPort Utility automatically enable AirPlay, but display no settings for this.
Since ralphington is using Mavericks (10.9.4), there are no controls for AirPlay displayed in his version of AirPort Utility.

  • What does noise of the line mean?

What's noise on the line mean and how do you know if you have got it?

soapy is part right. Audible noise is easy to identify and indicates a problem with the line; and is likely to be associated with high frequency noise. What actually matters for broadband is the high frequency noise; which you can't hear. It is very difficult (impossible?) to detect without special equipment. You may be able to guess that it is there either from audible noise, or from the behaviour of your broadband.
You will have difficulty deducing much from the behaviour of your broadband unless you use an unlocked modem.

I have looked all over for an explanation of the visual language of the "flowchart in airport utility 6.0 - e.g., dotted lines vs solid; why the hierarchy of base stations in a network falls as it does and occasionally moves around? Where will I find this explanation?

    Solid lines = Ethernet connection.
    Dotted = WiFi.

  • Airport Utility Express shutting down and ip addresses

Just this last week all of a sudden my internet connection starts and drops off randomly. Not only do you have to unplug both it and the router it only stays connected with a green light for a short period of time.
As well, we have had for the past year, my MacBook, an Acer NetBook, my iPhone and iTouch all using the Airport Utility Express. The Acer NetBook had been used in another location for about 2 weeks, when it came back to this location all of a sudden the Airport Utility automatically changes it's IP address to match my MacBook and generates the following error message: Another device on the network is using your computers ip address 10.0.1.3. Try connecting again later. If you continue to have problems, change the ip address of this computer or the ip address of the other device. Contact the network administrator if you need more information. Does anyone know how to change the ip addresses? I understand that this is one of the reasons why the airport utility shuts down but now it is shutting down when only one computer is being used as well.
Thank you for your ideas and thoughts

To minimize confusion, first let's be straight on terminology.  "AirPort Utility" is a software program.  You seem to have an "AirPort Express", not an "AirPort Utility Express".
When you say "the AirPort Utility (presumably the AirPort Express) changes its IP address to match my MacBook", how do you know that?
It's not AirPort Utility or AirPort Express that "generates the following error message: Another device on the network is using your computers ip address 10.0.1.3."  That message has to be coming from the networking software in OS X on your MacBook.
I doubt that this IP address conflict is causing your AirPort Express to shut down.  What exactly happens that you describe as that?
Is that Acer Netbook configured to configure its network settings using DHCP?  If it's configured to use a static IP address, that could explain what you're seeing.  If you're not sure how to check that, I won't be able to help you figure it out, as I don't know much about Windows.  However, I'd start by looking in the Settings/Control Panels for something involving networking.

  • Any problem with Airport Utility 5.3.2 and an AirDisk

    Morning.
Can I harmlessly update onto Airport Utility 5.3.2 without getting troubles using an USB hard disk connntected to the Airport Extreme base station? 5.3.1 has fixed a bug that has caused reiterative disconnects to the AirDisk occurring with 5.3.0.
And I really to not want to get these troubles back in 5.3.2.
    Are my fears baseless?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

Airport Utility 5.3.2 is quite harmless. More people having problem with OS X 10.5.3 update, which is making the AirDisk very slow and unresponsive. I end up re-formating the USB hard disk to solve the problem.

  • The AirPort Utility does not recognize and show the basestation until I reboot my laptop.

I have an issue doing changes to my just recently bought Airport Extreme basestation through Airport Utility (the latest version).
Wireless connection is perfect but my Airport Utility cannot recognise the basestation until I reboot my laptop. Then everything works find until the next time.
Normally I put my laptop to hibernate mode when I am not using it. When I activate it again and start Airport Utility I cannot see the basestation unless I reboot my laptop.
    Can anyone help me!

In order for the AirPort Utility to "find" the base station, it requires certain ports open on your Win7 laptop's software firewall. It may be possible when the laptop goes into hibernation mode, that these ports cannot be opened when the laptop "awakes" ... and thus, why you find yourself having to restart it.
I would recommend temporarily disabling the Win7 software firewall. Let let laptop go into hibernation or "force" it to go into hibernation, and then, see if you can access the base station through the utility after it awakes.

  • Power Mac G4 having video problems -green dots and pixelated lines

Yesterday my Power Mac G4 running OS X (10.5.1) started having unusual video problems. I started to notice green dots on the screen where the mouse pointer had been or where application windows had recently been. The severity of the video symptoms seem to vary - from a cluster of green pixels to slight amount of fuzz in text.
I'm thinking that this is a symptom of a problem with the video card starting to fail but I haven't ruled out the Apple Studio Display either. While the Mac was still under Apple Care support, I did have the video card replaced a few years ago due to symptoms that were much more severe than this.
Should I get a new video card? Could it be the display at fault? How expensive would it be to take it in to the local Apple store for diagnosis/repair?

  • What is  Grid and Cluster computing means ?

    Hi ,
The following terminology is very confusing. Could you please explain. What is this means ? and how they are different from each othere, etc.
    - Cluster computing-
    - Grid computing
    - Parallel computing
    - Distributed computing
    - supercomputers or conventional supercomputers
    Thanks
    Siva

Hans has already given an excellent reply. So I shall be just echoing the same and since it's quite early for me in the morning and it's not a weekend for me as well so my reply would be limited.
Grid Computing: What we mean by multiple administrative domains ?As you might have read in the link given by me and also on many other links on the web, there is no defined thing like this available. It's a concept. When in 10g, this concpet finally came, it was completely not possible to define except saying this that we are going to have many servers combined which can do the work for us as like one and we don't need to know which one is working for us and which one note. I remember an example given by HJR, electricity hubs. As being a consumer, we just need to bother about this that when we switch on the tubelight, it should be on. We are really not concerned that from which transformer, the electricity is going to actually come to the tube light. And that's exactly what Grid Computing is , you need a resource, you would get it, from where, you are not supposed to know. And looking at this aspect, this is not something which started happening from 10g only except this that a formal marketing name, Grid Computing , came into the picture. Oracle's RAC(earlier called OPS) is exaclty doing the same since version 6-presenting a multi-system environment as one to you. Now, there is another concept added in it called administrative domains. Again, this IMO, is a term and with the Grid Comptuing concept getting matured, it's implementations are also becoming clear. Like in 11.2 RAC, we have got a concept of Server Pools which means , in a cluster of 4 nodes, you can divide your OLTP work on Node 1 and 2, DWH on Node 3,4. And in these server pools, you can add and remove the nodes on the fly and pools would take care of the things on their own. Now, since we have managed to seggregate the roles of operations in two different set of nodes which are still part of one single cluster, we can manage things differently. And I think that's what can be called(loosely) Administrative Domains. Again, this is just one of the many examples I think as Hasn has mentioned, the definitions would really stand correct in the right context where they are used. And it's also possible that I might have given a completely wrong picture to you as well.
Is Clustering & Distributed computing, are the same ? Multiple computers are involved
Clustering & Distributed computing to compute the data, then what is the difference. ?Well, no, that's not true. Clustering is combining computing power of many computers as one and use it to do "divide and rule" . And Distributed computing is where you actually do the same work divided across many machines. For example, if you would do a transaction and if it spans across many machines and when you would commit, if all would say that they are okay with what you have done, it's Distributed computing. Just many computers are there in both doesn't make them same.
    3) There is no end to this thing I guess. We are in an environment where needs, demands are growing constantly. There is no such thing that what is large, fast anymore. What you call a supercompyter today, tomorrow it may work as a normal machine. Things are becoming faster, smaller and the thirst for more is just growing . I don't think that it's something that you should be bothered much about. In the last 20years or so, there is a constant evolution happening in technology and I can't think myself where this would end and what will be the final outcome of this rat-race of "faster, larger" .
Hope it does makes some sense and helps you.

  • I have 2 airport express base stations that I am trying to use to extend my wifi. I have windows 7 and downloaded the airport utility but it wont pick up my airport express. Does anyone know what im doing wrong and how to get them to work?

I have 2 Airport Base stations that I am trying to use to extend my WiFi but I cant get them to work. I downloade Airport Utility to windows 7 and it doesnt recognize any devices. I have them plugged in and they have a solid yellow light. Does anyone know what I need to do to get them to work. Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks for providing the model information.
I would recommend that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on all of your AirPort base stations. Once completed power them all down. While powered-down, temporarily connect both Express base stations to an open LAN port on the Extreme using separate Ethernet cables.
Once connected, power up the Extreme; wait five minutes, and then, power up each of the Express base stations. Which you power-up first doesn't matter.
Now start up the AirPort Utility on the PC. It should now "see" all three base stations. If so, go ahead and configure your extended network.
    Please post back your results.

  • HT3728 I only show airport extreme when I open airport utility it used to show both with a green dot somehow only extreme is showing with the green dot

can not figure out why when opening airport utility the green dot with the airport express picture is gone I only see the green dot next to extreme I did not change anything I only clicked on the dot and it was gone

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.
