In Ear Monitor question

I know this has been asked a few times, but my needs are a bit different than others.
What I basically want to do is use my Imac with Logic to run into a board for a solo show and use Logic for backing tracks for all my songs WITH a click track. I am a solo musician so there are no other live performers with me. I basically want a mix from Logic going to the main PA system, and the same mix but WITH a click track going to my in ear monitors.
My biggest concerns are :
~getting channels in logic going to two different outputs i.e. the mains and my monitors. I assume I would need an interface right? What would be the minimum specs that I would need for that interface?
~ simultaneously getting my vocals and guitar (live) to be in my in ear monitor mix with the backing track mix AND click track, while sending the same mix through the mains for the show (without a click track obviously)
~I would also like to record what I do live simultaneously but I'm willing to sacrifice this benefit.
I would appreciate any help greatly!
~Tom

  • In-ear monitor recommendations?

I'd prefer to use an in-ear monitor (so I can have a click playing mainly...). Does anyone have recommendations. I've never used one so I am at square one right now.
    Any help is very appreciated!

I have no idea how to even begin...
    1.what do i need?interface etc?
2.do i need 2 computers? ive read people use 2 w/ midi controller send sound card to sound card?
3.best way to run it so it wont crash? whats best options to have in computer processor etc...
    4. best way to start and stop tracks between songs with out using computer?

    thank you guys!

"..backing tracks that goes to crowd

    piano notes in singers ears"
Ok, here goes - if I understand you correctly, you want to use Mainstage for these three functions, yes?
If so, here's one way of doing it:
First, yes, you need an interface, with quite a few inputs/outputs by the sound of it.
Within your concert template, create a new 'set' for each song. In each of these sets, create software instrument channels for the backing track (if you want to break you backings down into individual instruments and treat these separeately, you can - just create a separate channel for each). Load up the playback plug-in in each channel. These will be routed, by default, to the main outputs of your interface, which you route into your pa to send front-of-house.
Now the click track. The most reliable way to do this that I have found is to create an audio file of the click, and simply load it up on another playback channel. However, you now need to send this to a different output. Make sure the interface is connected, now click on the output button (the bottom one in the I/O section) and select a different output. Route a cable from that (on your interface) to your drummer's monitor. There are ways of creating click tracks within MS, but reading the discussions, it seems to me this is easier.
You need to make sure all the playback channels are synced and playing in the same group. Have a look at this thread, where I describe how:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2546658&tstart=0
Now the piano. Will you be using piano sounds from within MS, or external audio? Whatever the answer, the key is in the routing. Basically, you would have your output of the piano channel routed to the main outs (ie the same used for the playback tracks as described above) so the audience can hear. Now click on one of the 'send' slots, and select a spare bus. This will create a new aux channel over on the right of the mixer section of the MS edit window. In the output slot of this aux channel, select another, different output on you interface, and route this to your singer's monitor.
Now, go back to the original piano channel. Click on the send slot you've just created and select 'pre'. This means that the amount of the piano signal you send to the monitor will be unaffected by any changes you make to the main output level. You will notice a small rotary control next to the send slot. Probably best to turn this all the way up and then control the volume you send to the monitor using the fader on the new aux channel or the fader on the new output channel.
Wow, that's all done from memory, so apologies if it's not totally clear - come back to me if you're having probs.
To start and stop tracks, you can use a midi footpedal or send midi change messages from a keyboard. Personally, I use a GIO, which is set up to do that without too much input required.
The best way to make it a stable as poss is to minimise CPU load - do this by using as few plug-ins as possible, and by using aux channels for those that you do use, so that you only have to have one instance of each plug-in running, but you can route multiple channels to it (using the send buttons as described above - probably best to have a quick look in the manual for this).
Computer spec: - go for the best you can afford, but as you can see, I run a very basic macbook, and I get by ok (granted that I don't use any keyboard sounds).
No, you shouldn't need 2 computers.
There's a lot there, and I've only really skimmed it, but with a bit of experimenting you shouldn't have too much trouble. Best of luck.

  • SIlly NTSC monitor question

This may be a silly question but,
When viewing footage on an NTSC monitor, my footage looks quite different than it does in FCP on the computer screen. If I do color correction just based on the NTSC monitor for DVD output, will that DVD look the same once played on a regular DVD/TV and played on a computer's DVD player?
I ask because when I'm viewing footage on my NTSC monitor, it looks way different on my computer screen and I want my DVDs to look good whether they are played on a regular TV dor though a computer's DVD player.
    Thanks

Now you've done it-- opened a whole can o' worms. Lots to consider:
Is your monitor truly a monitor, properly calibrated and set up? Will you be looking at the dvd on the same monitor? Are all the sets to be used for playback set up the same?
The idea of a properly calibrated monitor is that your show should look the same on your monitor as on any other properly calibrated monitor. But that's as far as it goes. There's no accounting for anyone else's tv set. Often manufacturers paint them "hot" and then people crank them even more to overcome less than ideal viewing conditions. So you're doubly hosed from the moment is leaves your hands.
The best you can do is create a show that looks good on a properly set up system and hope for the best.
But don't just rely on the monitor-- learn and use the scopes too.
And then there is the current manufacturers situation with monitors themselves. The industry is in a mess right now, transitioning to lcd-- none of which look really good. I hope Zebulon chimes in here-- a professional engineer who will tell you horror stories if he's in the mood.
And back to your original concern, do not trust your computer monitor in FCP for accurate color or much of anything else except your edits.

  • RAM and Activity Monitor questions M.B.P. Is sOoOoo slow and I just don't know where to start..RAM and Activity Monitor

So I am really unsure where to start but I def need a little help getting to where I want to be or feel I should be.  I understand that I am pretty much filled when it comes to the RAM on this machine but I need to figure out how to lower it.  I back up my machine about once a week which is longer than I would prefer but due to the way Mavericks has been acting I cant deal with the long backup process.... WHY?!?? may be your response to that and I will fill you in.  My external Hard Drive is a 1tb Lacie and its about 2 years old.  In that time I have dropped, lost, threw and slept ontop of it.  Causeing minor damage (each time) to the casing.  So now becomes rather hot and I kinda dont want it to burn out.  When I first updated to Mavericks the backups were fast and went along mb by mb...now though, the updates drag out for 3-5 hours and update kb by kb.  Tried some of the "solutions" posted on here but none seem to work any more than me consistantly purging my system while the backup happens...kinda why I dont have time to do it everyday like I'd like.
ANYWAY can someone please fill me in on a way, program, application, anything that will help me lower my RAM?  Because in the spirit of honesty I just dont have the extra funds to snag some new RAM or another HD.  I am almost at the point of saying "F**K IT" and wiping everything off the computer so its as close to empty as can be and manually, one by one redownloading what I want/need.  But I dont have the time to accomplish that either.  PLEASE lend me your ear and help a brudda out with some information from that exceptional brain of yours.
Below is a copy of my machines "report" from EtreCHECK and I am including screen shots of what the (Mavericks) Activity Monitor currently looks like in ALL PROCESSES.  PLUS it kinda seems that I have WAY TOOO MANY processes going on in the ACTIVITY MONITOR and have NO clue how to lower the amount.    Will truly appreciate any help anyone can toss my way.
        THANK YOU

I have yet purchase MyFico because I alread paid Credit Check Monitoring w/ Free Credit Score. Thank youThere are 10's if not 100's a proprietary credit scores out there and they are all "correct" based on their own score model. Asking which is "accurate" is not the right way to look at it. What is importnat is what credit score matters to the company you are applying to. Basically there are FICO scores and Non-FICO scores, or "FAKO's" as they have come to be known. FICO reports that 90% of top lenders use FICO for credit decisions. It is clearly accepted as the industry leader. If you want to use others that's fine but they are not FICO scores and are not used by the majority of lenders. As well, your FICO score, any credit score, is based on the information in your credit report, you have 3 credit reports from the 3 main credit agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and you will have a FICO score for each of those 3 credit reports. Your credit reports may have different info in them thus your scores may not be the same. In addition, the info in your 3 credit reports is always changing, even on a daily basis, thus your FICO credit scores are not static and will change with time, sometimes daily based on new info added to your credit reports or simply due to the passing of time (time is one of the major factors taken into account in you credit score). Feel free to view all the other credit scores but in the end they do not matter, they are not used by Lenders thus they are just a guide, a guide that can be way off (or it can be close as well, it's a toss). Not something, well, to bet the house on... Additional info:http://www.myfico.com/crediteducation/questions/different-scores-for-3-credit-bureaus.aspx

  • OS X Tiger Loading Problem and Monitor Question

Ok guys, I have two questions for you Mac Experts.
    1. Yesterday, I was trying to load OS X Tiger, from CD onto my 400mhz Rev.2 Power Mac and I tried it about 5-9 times, and it kept giving me an error message saying that installation failed, or "Hold the power button, and hit reset". I took the hard drive out, put it in my slot loader iMac, and loaded up tiger onto that just fine, with no problems. So, it's not the CD's or the hard drive. The funny thing is that when i put the hard drive back into my power mac, it runs just fine. No problems. Do you think it is the CD Drive or what? Maybe a Logic Board Problem?
    2. I just picked up a Flat Screen iMac 1st gen. I was wondering if there was a cable that I could use to connect the iMac to my Power Mac and use the iMac as a screen for my Power Mac. The guy at the electronics store showed me some mac adaptor that would fit into my iMac, and that had a serial port at the end. Could i connect that serial end, into the serial port of my Power Mac and have it read as a monitor? If this is possible, that would be great. If not, i will stop being a cheap skate, and buckle down and purchase a flat screen monitor. Any help would be great.

Ok, let me see if this helps any.
I downloaded Dimm Memory check thing that you said, it it shows that all of my RAM is ok. All of my RAM is either pc 100 or pc 133, so no issues there.
I downloaded the most up to date firmware, and i said that my firmware is up to date. Dont know if loading it made it up to date, or if it already was.
The video card is the origial Rage 128 or something. Whatever came with the Power Mac, is in there.
I was just downloading updateds in tiger, and got that stupid error message to hold the power, and restart. I am going to try this machine now in tiger, and get back to you.
Also thanks for the link about the iMac Flat Screen. I will look into it.

  • IMac as external monitor questions

I have an HP 6930p laptop from work and would like to connect my new 27" iMac to it to use as a larger monitor. The HP only has a VGA port, so I was hoping to find out if it's possible to connect this somehow to the iMac?? I didn't know if this could really be done with adapters, etc.
One other question: I know you can use the iMac as an external monitor for a MacBook laptop, but will this also work if you're running a PC operating system via VM-Ware on the MacBook??
    Thanks so much

You can only use your 27" iMac for a device with DisplayPort output. To use your Windows laptop with VGA output you would need to find a 3rd party adapter specially designed to convert the VGA output to DisplayPort output. Then you would need a cable that went from the adapter to the iMac that has a mini-DisplayPort connector on the iMac's end.
As long as the MacBook has a DisplayPort there should be no issue with Windows on a virtual machine. You just need a cable with the correct connectors when it is DisplayPort to DisplayPort.

  • DVI to 22" Dell Display monitor question

    Hello,
I would like to hook up my MBP 17" to a Dell 22" display and would like to know what cable I would need. DVI-D? DVI-A? DVI-I?
This monitor accepts both DVI and VGA inputs.
    Your assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

I have a similar question. I have a dell 20" widescreen I want to connect to a mac mini which hasn't arrived yet. I orded the DVI-mini display port adapter which came first and the pin configuration is slightly different than what the dell monitor cable has. The dell has 2 3x3 groups with a 2x3 gap in between them and the apple adapter is 8x3 with no gap. Will it still work if the dell has fewer pins than the adapter? Maybe for features some DVI monitors have that mine doesn't? All the pins which are present line up with the holes ok so they will plug together.

  • Mac and Windows with dual monitors Question

I use a Intel MacPro running Tiger with latest updates in my church. We use the Mac and Keynote 2.0.2 to present PowerPoint slides on the big screen (dual outputs). Everything was going well until the pastors upgraded to new computers running Vista and Office 2007. Now neither pastor's files will load into Keynote. It comes up with an error. The pastors have saved their files from PP as 2003 PPT files, and they still will not open. Error - unable to open file type. The one pastor went back to XP (dumped Vista) but still used the Office 2007 program and saved as PP2003, but the error still appears.
FYI - I noticed that Office 2007 saves with a file with the extension of .pptx instead of the .ppt. Checking the file they gave me shows that it is indead a .ppt file and not .pptx file. It makes no difference.
I believe it is an Office 2007 problem I'm dealing with. I have taken the .ppt file and loaded it onto the PC running PP 2003 and it loads fine, except for some format problems. I then resave it with a different name and tried to load that file (hoping it was converted) , with the same error showing. The problem is transfered with the file. Other files created with the PP 2003 program load fine into Keynote, so it has to be the Office2007 doing something.
So the questions are, is there an easy fix and still use the Keynote program, OR does Keynote 3 take care of this problem in the upgrade, OR should I install Win XP home or Pro and use parallels (which I have)? Would WinXP Home be enough to support the dual outputs and be fast enough? I am familiar with XP Pro not Home.
Any information you may have, could be a help. I need this resolved soon. I hate having to bring in the old Windows PC, after enjoying the quality of the Mac.

Thanks David - glad to here the Mini supports dual monitors, and you're not having any streaming issues. Did you have any special settings, like "no hardware acceleration"? Are you streaming HD content?
If it supports dual monitors, then I would think the iPad could be used as a second display and input device - the demos I've seen with Air Display (from Avatron Software") would accomplish what I'm looking for. Here is a demo at http://www.vimeo.com/16950420 showing the iPad working with a Windows machine, but I've seen them working with Macs as well.
    Thanks again

  • Monitor Question: Misleading and Confused

I'm looking to buy a new HP monitor, I just had a few questions whats the difference between HP 25bw and HP 25xi Monitor?
I was interested in this monitor for the gloss screen and crystal clear images they can produce. Having read a review on CNET, the reviewer stated "the 27xi has a heavy AG coating" (Anti-Glare coating), why the hell have a gloss screen at all if you're gonna AG coat it? Anyone with this monitor can confirm this?

I don't like glare/gloss screens. AG screens will make my eyes see/watch better. You may perfer gloss screen. Manufacturers have to make products for dozens tastes.

  • External preview monitor question

    Hello,
I'm trying to switch over to Premiere Pro CS5.5 for some of my future projects (coming from Sony Vegas 10) and I'm a little confused. I have a Black Magic intensity card and I am thinking about getting a Nvidea GTX 580 for the mercury playback.  My goal is to use dual PC monitors for working space and preview to a 42"  Panasonic Plasma HDTV.
Question: I have noticed that many of the GTX580 cards have an HDMI output. Would I want to use the HDMI output of the GTX580 to feed my Plasma or would I still use the Blackmagic card?  I got the impression from another thread that Black Magic intensity will slow my Premiere timeline down.  Also would the GTX580 HDMI output be as accurate as the BM Intesity card HDMI output?
    Many thanks,  Marc

    Hello Everyone,
I have a ATI Radeon HD 5870 and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 in my Mac Pro.  I using the NVIDIA for my two monitors and the ATI for my external monitor.  I'm using the HDMI connection to my 42'.  Everything was working fine until today.  I'm not sure why I can't select the external monitor anymore.  I've rebooted my Mac (still thinking like a PC user), but that didn't help at all.  Has anyone else noticed any changes as far as the external monitor goes?

  • Calibrating my Monitor question

    Hello everyone
I am trying to calibrate my JVC monitor
i am following the instructions to a link mentioned in one of the threads
i generated a color bar in finalcut and brought it to the timeline
i see it on my monitor, i turned the chroma all the way down and the contrast to the middle
I Canot see these three lines on my monitor-
Three Picture Lineup Generating Equipment bars on the bottom right called PLuGE bars.
    any suggestions
    Danny

Great article. I copied the section relevant to my situation below:
    Accurate Video Monitoring
To ensure accurate video monitoring, your video monitor should be correctly calibrated to your system. The key thing to remember is that the “Brightness” control on your monitor should more correctly be labeled “Black Level”. The setting of the black level control on your monitor will determine which analogue voltage you the viewer will perceive as black when you view the image on the monitor. By adjusting this control correctly you can calibrate your monitor to show you a true image whether your DV deck, for instance, adds 7.5 IRE setup correctly or not to it’s analogue outputs.
Problems can occur when you monitor multiple video sources through the same monitor, for instance an analogue deck and a digital deck. In this situation, if the digital deck does not correctly add 7.5 IRE setup, you would need two different monitor calibrations, which is tricky to achieve. The solution is to add a “proc amp”, an analogue video manipulation device that can raise the analogue output from the digital deck by 7.5 IRE, making up for the lack of such circuitry inside the deck itself.
I have a JVC deck that DOES correctly add 7.5 IRE Setup if needed, but this ONLY matters if I'm dubbing to an analogue format, correct? If I'm just monitoring through a broadcast monitor to color correct in Final Cut Pro, I should:
-use the 7.5 IRE Setup switch on the JVC deck
-calibrate the monitor to 7.5 IRE being the darkest black
My question still is, what is the 7.5 IRE Setup switch on the monitor for? Should both switches be on, or does that add 7.5 IRE twice? My gut is that the monitor 7.5 IRE switch also adds 7.5 IRE and thus should be off, provided the JVC deck 7.5 IRE switch is on.
    Is anyone following me?
    Thanks.

  • HP HD Monitor question

I just bought the new 23" HP monitor to replace my old one.Question,it has a HDMI hookup on it.Where would you hook up the other end of the HDMI cable? My desktop is 6 or 7 years old and has no HD connections.I have a Hi-Def cable box nearby hooked to my 52"LG.My cable box only has one HDMI hook-up but my LG has four. Can I work something out with this or am I in the wrong ballpark all together?Any and all help will be appreciated!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

On a desktop that old, I would just connect the monitor with a VGA or DVI cable based on the connection from your desktop.

  • T430 Multiple Monitor question

    Real simple question.
Will a T430 with the Intel HD Graphics card support both a monitor connected to the VGA port AND a monitor connected to the Mini DisplayPort simultaneously?
My User will have a desktop monitor and a wall mounted large screen display connected at the same time, and I just want to ensure I will be able to use both ports to each drive one monitor.
(they won't let us buy a port replicator or dock...because then apparently everyone would want one)

Only of the internal LCD is closed.
