In energy settings..should hard drive be set to never

I was advised by Mac Pro Apple support ..That the hard drives and Mac should never sleep..thats its not good to be interuppted while editing..
I also have the display set to never plus i put a screen saver in
Can anyone help

It's a good idea to stop the hard drives sleeping when you are editing.
The problem does not usually occur whilst you are actively editing but whilst you are rendering.
Under certain circumstances rendering can take many hours.
If you have left the computer alone to allow it to render, the computer will think that nobody is using it and will go to sleep thereby stopping the rendering process.,

Boot from your Mac OS X installer DVD.  After selecting a language, choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
When Disk Utility launches, use the "Zero Out Data" option under the Erase tab.  Erase the entire disk, not only the free space.
One pass of zeros is secure enough for normal use.  One pass will take a couple of hours, so plan some time.

  • BIOS not detecting notebook hard drive after setting default BIOS settings.

I had my Ubuntu 14.04 installed in my laptop in a drive named "Notebook hard drive" in addition to a pre-installed Windows 8. Today I set the default BIOS settings in my laptop and when I rebooted it and tried to use Ubuntu by pressing "F9" key and choosing from the BIOS menu I found my "Notbook hard drive" option missing. My Ubuntu drive is still there but I have no way to access it. Is there any way I can get it back to working?

Try disabling secure boot in the BIOS and then restarting the notebook.

  • USB hard drive is set to read only?

I'm am very new to Mac (my first one). I plug my USB Seagate drive into the Mac and it reads it fine, but says everything is read only. How do i set it up to allow the Mac to modify the files? Does the hard drive have to be reformatted to a Mac OS and/or is it possible to use the same hard drive on the Mac and PC. I have windows XP Pro SP3 installed using VM Fusion as well.
I have done a lot of video editing Windows based and very rarely moved the files to my PC hard drive. I have to assume you can do the same with Mac, however I have been able to figure out how to do this in iMovie 2009.
    Thanks in advance,

    BRDVPRA,
Your external drive is undoubtedly formatted as NTFS. As you already know, your Mac can read this format, but it cannot write to it. There are some third-party shareware applications that will allow your Mac to write to the NTFS volume; search for these on versiontracker.com, if you want to give this a try.
The native Mac format is HFS+ (Mac OS Extended), which cannot be read natively by Windows. Again, there are third-party solutions for this (specifically, a Windows app called "MacDrive," also available on versiontracker.com).
The only format that will allow reading and writing from both OS X and Windows is the FAT-32 format (called MS-DOS in Disk Utility). This format is older, and less compatible with modern file formats. For example, it will not support files larger than 4 GBs.
The question that needs answering is whether or not you will using this drive cross-platform, or whether it will be dedicated solely to OS X. If the former, you'll need to use either the FAT-32 format or some third-party solution. If this drive will only be accessed from OS X in the future, you should copy the data, format it as HFS+ (Mac OS Extended), then return the data to it.

  • I accidentally formatted my portable hard drive when setting it up for time machine. Is there any way for me to get back my lost files?

I have an external hard drive of the brand Western Digital.
Before I got my iMac I moved a lot of my important files from my PC to the hard drive and today I went on and connected it to my iMac to move my files over to it.
When it had connected a window popped up that asked if I wanted to use this hard drive with the program Time Machine and create backups. Without thinking it trough enough and reading the warning properly (I'm stupid I know) I clicked "yes". I then realised how stupid it was and cancelled the formatting of the hard drive. But somehow the program still managed to delete all my important files and can't find any way to get them back. Neither can I connect the hard drive to my PC anymore so I can't check if the files are still there (which I doubt they are since I can't see them on my iMac either).
And now I wonder: is there any way for me to get back my lost files or are they lost forever?
    Thank you in advance!

A data recovery specialist or some data recovery programs should be able to help.  Most format simply rewrite the directory tree saying no files are on this disk.  The bits that represent the files are still flipped appropreiately so they still exists, you just don't have the location info to get at them.  Secure formats and erases rewrite each bit to a zero or 1 or random so the data is then truely gone.  This type of format takes a long time to complete.
I'm not making a recomendation of a particular program but here is one company that does what you ask:
http://www.remosoftware.com/mac-recovery  The cost is pretty high but I'm sure they don't sell many copies and need to cover their development costs.
Good luck and don't write anything on the freshly formatted disk until you decide what to do.

  • Has anyone else had issues saving files should hard drive issue force reinstall of Story?

In theory there should be a way to protect one's work offline to one's local hard drive.  No one has told me what I've done wrong, nor what to do to get files back.  I saved frequently to an external hard drive, saved using the procedure of "save now", i did not get any cautious messages "you need to save while online as cache or file suffixes will not  or cannot save to the local drive" nor any variation.  Curiously no one wants to talk to me to help resolve.  Anyone out there who wants their work only temporarily saved unless online?  Please reply to this thread.  Thank you.

  • Hard drive state set to "Frozen" in bios, no password registered ???

My ACER Aspire 5733 shows the HDD as "Frozen" in the bios and, obviously, won't boot to it. There are no Administrator or User passwords registered, but it shows the HDD as "Frozen" in the bios Security screen. If I take the hdd out, and reboot, its not there, as expected, when I put it back in, reboot, go directly to the bios, it now shows the hdd state as "Clear" just like the other two password states. BUT, if I then reboot, instead of Windows starting, it shows no bootable devices. Then when I check the bios again, the hdd state is back to "Frozen" and the other two passwords are still "Clear" as before. Does anyone know how to fix this ? I've tried quite a few restarts, and even with a whole other hard drive installed, it still does this.

I seem to have fixed this. It kept reverting to the "Frozen" state on the hdd even after doing the Acer recommended fix found here:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32674/~/bios-password-frozen#_ga=1.262809484.1609204961.1438903912 After trying the procedure, it still reverted to "Frozen" on the first reboot when installing Windows. So what I did was this. When I got it back to the state where all three Security Passwords read "Clear", for the very next restart, I updated the bios to the newest version. I used the pure DOS method. After the shutdown when the bios update was done, the "Clear" state was still intact. I *think* the "Clear" state remains, as long as you go directly into bios after setting it to that, and the issue was that it wasn't saved when not going directly into bios. The next restart after the bios update, I started to install Windows, and THIS time, after the BIOS update, the first restart during the Windows installation did NOT result in a "Frozen" hard drive state. So, I think there may be a bug in the second last bios for this device, as it didn't seem to be able to actually save the state of the hdd password correctly.

  • Hard Drive connected - Space Available never goes down when deleting files?

I have tried 2 different USB drives connected to the new airport N router.
Both drives work fine, an 80 GB maxtor, then replaced it with a 500GB usb seagate drive. Both drives have the same problem.
I only hook one drive up and copy over files to the drive. The space available shows up fine, but when I delete any files, the space available never goes down.
Any ideas how to fix this or is this just a nice big glitch?

Anyone with a hard drive connected to the N router.
Just copy some files the drive, then delete them while watching space available. The space available never goes down. What gives? Anyone else seeing this problem?

  • Hard drive/file set up

I've run into the system resources error over and over. I've frozen tracks and done just about everything I can think of. I'm hearing from this forum that adding an external HD will help this.
My questions: When using an external HD, what is the best way to set it up? Do you put Logic and song files and instrument plug-ins on the external? Do you keep Logic on the computer's HD and put the plug-ins and song files on the external? Is there a "best" combination to help minimize the possibility of system resource errors from occurring?
    Thanks for any help!

Thanks Fox for the clarification questions
    1. 2.16 GHz core 2 duo, 500 gig internal drive
    2. Size: thus far up to 20 tracks. I use Omnisphere and East West Play. I notice that the Play instruments hang up the system much more than Omnisphere
    3. Buffer at 512. I've changed it around and it seemed that 512 produced the least system resource problems.
    4. I always shut down all applications but I have not disabled Airport. I will try that. Also, I'm running a second monitor off the macbook which may be taking up some resources.
BTW, I tried the external HD. The manual suggests song files and plugins on the external and keep Logic on the internal. Well, that didn't work at all. With my firewire occupied with the Duet, that leaves usb 2.0. I tried to open a song (22 tracks/16 from Play instruments) and it would have taken well over an hour just to load the thing.

  • External Hard Drives -- please set record straight

Are USB external drives good for video or no? Some say that they transfer slower. Some say they dont transfer video at all!!
    Please let me know. Thanks.

USB is no good for video. USB sends info in packets, not in a steady stream, which video files demand.

  • How to recover tabs and bookmarks and settings from hard drive after computer dies?

computer's motherboard died, and I am going to move all the browsing info to a new computer.
When my computer died I had 20 something tabs open and I haven't saved them to bookmark yet and I need to get them back, along with the whole histories too.
I also used to be able to recover the bookmarks but I haven't done it for a while and maybe firefox 4.0 does it differently this time?

  • Why does the put display to sleep setting put the hard drive to sleep

In the energy options (preferences) for power adapter, I have set the display to sleep after 1 minute but the hard drive is set to never. I do this when I am downloading but don't need to use the macbook. However, the macbook seems to go to sleep anyway - any idea why? Any new settings?
I've maintained these settings on my Power Book G4 and it puts the display to sleep but keeps the Power Book on while downloading.
    Thanks

  • Energy Settings - do your hard drives go to sleep ?

    Hello everyone,
I am wondering what most of you do in terms of energy settings ( on a windows computer ), do you have your hard drives set to go to sleep after so many hours ? or do you have them set to *never* go off ?
At the moment I have my drives all set to never go to sleep, but I am now wondering if I should be setting them to "sleep" in 4 or 5 hours.
I am a bit hesitant to do this, because I wonder if I am encoding video, and the 4 hour mark kicks in while an encode is happening - WILL the computer go to sleep ? or will it continue on and finished the video ?
    Thanks for any information.
    DAve.

For single disks it may be possible to use the sleep function, but I would not advise it. The power saved is negligent and is offset by the wear-and-tear of the start-stop cycles. For multiple disks in a Raid configuration, you have the problem of staggered spin-up sequences. So, Dan is right, it is not worth the trouble.

  • I want to transfer my Windows files from my Clickfree external drive to my new iMac. iMac recognizes the drive but won't read the files. What should I do? My PC hard drive is dead so I can't hook up my iMac to that.

I'm switching from Windows to iOS. But my new iMac won't allow me to transfer my Windows files on my Clickfree HD425 over to the iMac. It initialy didn't even recognize my hard drive during set up, so I manually went through Finder where it recognized the Clickfree drive. But my files wouldn't appear. I can't go back to my original Windows computer because the hard drive crashed, and that's why I bought this new iMac in the first place. What should I do? As a Mac newbie who was reluctant to exit the Windows world, I don't want my original babystep into the iOS world soured by my first experience.
