In FCPro X 10.1.1 copy event to another hard drive

It's great how you can copy an entire Library . . . or even an "event (with the project line) to another hard drive.
We used to be able to "delete unused media" when we did tis in FCP 7.  But I don't see that function in X.
For example, it does NOT include unused clips (meaning they're not in the timeline, but in the library - if you export the event).  Good!
But say we interview someone and it's a 4 minute clip.  But we only use 30 seconds of it in the project line.  FCP X seems to export the entire 4 minute clip?  I'm hoping I'm wrong!
Anyone have any experience wth this?  Or is there another "setting" I should be using?  In FCP 7, I think you could even tell it how long of a handle you wanted.  But I'm not seeing these basic features in X.  Oh, we have the latest versions of Mavericks and FCP.
I'd sure love and appreciate your thoughts!
Thanks,
Larry

Thank you, Jim.  At east I know now - it's NOT just me!
You'd sure think Apple would include that feature.  I'm sure professionals (like me!) would want it.  And . . . it used to do it!

  • Can not copy files to another hard drive for backup

    30May07
    Apple Support:
I need to copy files from my home to an external hard drive because I need to do a complete re-install, and erase the laptop's hard drive.
When I try to either move the home folder the icon is a house, I get an question stating that some of my files do not have permssions, do I want to continue anyway (Yes, I do!)
A bit into the move, I get this message (dealing with permissions):
    Can not copy 1528.emix . Error code -36 .
I have no such file or any .emix files either. I was able to copy to whole hard disk, not just the home to the same external drive two weeks ago.
How can I copy my HOME to my external drive so I can reinstall the OS?
    Thank you for your help

    07Jun07
I believe the problem was my computer's internal drive. It corrupted several files. I had a very hard time copying the files. The -36 error stopped any transfer cold.
I did a complete install of the OS.
I need a way to determine what files are corrupt so I can delete them. It took 24 hours to constantly keep trying to copy the files to the external drive. I ended up deleting a lot of un-corrupt files. How can I determine which ones are bad so I don't delete good data?
Thank you for your help. I am also grateful to the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ.
You are having a hardware problem - there's a problem
on one of the drives in this story.
This can be caused by extra hardware connected to the
computer, so if you have anything extra connected to
the computer (external iSight, iPod, USB hub,
    anything) disconnect it.
If that doesn't help, try reformatting the external
    drive and try again.
If that doesn't help, just rescue what you can,
because the next step is that you're going to be
    reformatting the internal drive.

  • How do I import imovie events from another hard drive?

I have dozens of events from iMovie I need to import to Final Cut X but they all reside in the 2nd and 3rd hard drive bay in my Mac Pro. The only option I see to import is the single command that gives no options and just says import so it only looks to the imovie events on my OS hard drive (which I DIDNT want imported).
How do I import all these other iMovie events?
I am using Lion and the latest version of iMovie and Final Cut.

Use iMovie to move the events to your Movies folder, otherwise you're can't.

I cannot get my iTunes library/music from my old computer to my new one. The old computer is so messed up that I cannot even open a browser.I tried to copy to an external hard drive and the music was there until I went to upload to the new computer. I disconnected my old computer so I will have to reconnect it I am sure. thank you for any help. Last time I transferred I used a product I purchased. That was a long time ago.

First of all make sure that you've definitely backed up the movies to your external hard disc.
In iMovie click on any event you don't want, go to the file menu and select 'move event to trash'. Then do the same for any unwanted projects - 'move project to trash'. Quit out of iMovie and empty the trash.
    Hope that helps!

  • How do I generate a duplicate copy of my photos on another hard drive without loosing the keywords?

I want to back up my photos on another hard drive and access them from my main catalog? How do I do that? If I use Lightroom to move the folder onto another hard drive it does not give me the option to copy them. I have to actually move them, which defeats the purpose because I still have only one copy.
All of my images are in DNG format.

Backup copies should never be accessed by LR or any other editing application. They are "safety net" copies to be used only when the original image files become lost, damaged, or corrupted.
As dj_paige explained you also need to include regular backup copies of your LR catalog(s) on the backup hard drive. Any file & folder backup application will do this for you by keeping the files and folders on your backup drive up-to-date (i.e. synchronized) with the primary drive. If on a Mac you can use Time Machine if on a Windows system there are numerous applications available, both paid and freeware. I use FreeFileSync for backing up all my media files, including Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Settings, and of course LR catalog.
If you're intention was to use the backup copies as separate editing copies, please take a look at Virtual Copies.

  • HELP! I can't copy files to my hard drive

This is weird. I've had my MP since it came out and all was fine until the other day. All of a sudden I cannot copy anything to my Hard Drive! Not from a CD, not from an external HD. I can copy TO other places but not to my working folders. I also cannot copy from a DVD (where I have files archived) to an external drive I use or my HD.
Whatever happened though seems to have affected my other computer (G4 Quicksilver) which I have networked to my MP because I can't stuff copy there either. Nor can I copy items back and forth when connected.
    I've repaired permissions many times.
    Any ideas?

Verify the disk, then verify permnissions. And make sure that "Ignore Ownership on this volume" (Get Info) is not selected, or is not even present (shouldn't be for boot drive).
It sounds like an ownership issue, maybe a corrupt directory.

  • Is there a way I can use my external hard drive without the files being transferred on to my computer? as like like my iTunes music being on my hard drive without them being copied onto my computers hard drive ?

is there a way I can use my external hard drive without the files being transferred on to my computer? as like like my iTunes music being on my hard drive without them being copied onto my computers hard drive ? because i dont have that much memory and i wanted my external hard drive to be the source for my music files and not my computer.

Many users keep their iTunes libraries on external drives. You just have to remember to connect and power up the drive before launching iTunes.

  • How do i copy from an external hard drive to iMac?

When copying from an external hard drive, when the box 'select your disc' comes up - I am unable to continue.

I suspect the external HD is formatted in NTFS, by default a Mac can write to one but it cannot be written to from one. How you overcome this is to download and install the NTFS-3G Download.

  • How do I copy iTunes from external hard drive to iMac?

How do I copy iTunes from external
    Hard drive to iMac?

if your main library is on your external, then when not connected, you wont have access to it.
so first decide, where do you want to keep the files.
E.g. In my case, I keep my files on "C:\iTunes Music".
I have a backup on external "Z:\iTunes Backup". If I format my laptop, this is how I restore everything.
    Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced.
The iTunes music folder in selects as "C:\iTunes Music"
I have checked Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized, and also Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to ibrary". Click OK to save and close preferences.
My iTunes list is now empty. I go to file, and select "Add Folder to Library". From that window, I select "Z:\iTunes Backup". iTunes then copies everything from the backup to "C:\iTunes Music". For me, backup is backup, I dont need it to play music.
Now decide this. If you do not want to keep music on C:, but want to only connect the external to update music on your ipod, do this:
In preferences, set iTunes Music folder as "Z:\iTunes Backup", and uncheck Copy files to iTunes Music folder, since they are already there. Then in files, select Add folder to library again to build and update the list.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it

I have one folder on my desktop, i want to copy it on external hard drive so how can i do this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Connect the external drive and open a Finder window pressing the Finder icon in Dock. Then, drag the folder to Finder, so it will be copied to this external disk.
If you can't copy this folder, probably you have to format the external disk or use an app that allows you to write in that external drive. Mac OS X can't write in NTFS external disks

  • Trying to update 2 events from my hard drive to 10.1 - It tells me there is no event or project to update!!!!! WHY

Why can't I update an event from my hard drive to Mac Pro final cut 10.1 - It says there are no events to update

The Events and Projects you want to update have to be in a Final Cut Projects folder and a Final Cut Events folder at the root level of the Hard Drive on which they are stored. Then in FCP X under file menu select Update Projects and Events and navigate and select the Hard Drive where they are stored.

  • Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

Yes, but you might want to think carefully about it.
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • How can I copy outlook files to hard drive

How can I copy large outlook files to the external hard drive with out formatting it?
I currently have Macbook Pro Version OS X 10.9.5.
I tried all the ways copying outlook files, but it says larger files cannot be transferred. My outlook file is about 16gb.
Also tried trough Time Machine...Can anyone list of the steps here to copy these files to my hard drive?
Later, I want to copy these files from hard drive to the new Macbook Pro.....need urgent help please !!!

If your external drive is FAT32 (MS-DOS) format, it won't take file larger than 4GB. There's no way around that, I'm afraid.

  • Copied Library to External Hard drive and iTunes cannot find

I copied my iTunes library to an external hard drive last night and went into preferences and changed location and then deleted the original folder...now iTunes is empty... If I go onto hard drive and select a song it tranfers it into iTunes (and back onto computers hard drive)...obviously did something wrong...anybody have any suggestions on how to fix?

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...

If you are just testing, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location.
