In Finder an unknown "SHARED" - what is it?

On the left of my Finder window (on both my up-to-date iMac and my MacBook Pro) I've suddenly begun noticing a "chchny-I82105" entry.
I don't recall ever seeing this before. I've tried clicking on it and I get "Connection failed" after a second or two. Right clicking on it and selecting "Info" opens a small window with "Kind: PC" and under "More Info" there is "Fetching..." and a fast rotating circle which just goes on and on.
Am I being paranoid in thinking that someone is trying to use my router or wifi or even getting at my files?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions about what this might be and if I should do something about it.
PS. I'm not worried about "br's remote desktop on br-zotac"

This is likely from a networked device, which can be the router itself, a DVR or television on your network, and scanners and printers. You can try completely resetting the router to factory default settings to clear its caches and other details that can result in ghost devices appearing on the network, but this may be more effort than it's worth. Another approach is to simply check the "Attached Devices" in your router's settings, to see which ones are currently active. You will likely only see your known devices listed, suggesting its not a rogue device on your network but insetad a defunct service being broadcast from an existing device.

Mike, thanks for turning me onto that Apple Support article. My aging MacBook has been a good computer. Recently it has had a few problems which required me to erase and restore everything. I suppose I'm trying to treat it gently by doing more frequent maintenance on the disk health. I thought doing an occasional repair permissions was in keeping with a more active preventative maintenance attitude. This way of thinking may be completely wrong on my part. If you could suggest other ways to promote healthy MacBook aging I'm all ears. I think I know one way is to try to use only up to 75% of it's memory capacity, but currently I'm at about 90%.

Unknown shared pc on finder

Hi everybody,
A couple of days ago i have been seen a unknow shared pc on my finder, so i try some things to remove it from there:
- 1st: i changed the wireless network password
- 2nd: i restore the airport express and reconfigured it
- 3rd: i put my network in acces control mode and listed all my MAC adress of all my devices there
In all cases the unknown pc still there.
Somebody may help me to remove it from my finder or know wich device is it

So, when i go to System Preferences>Sharing and check the box File Sharing, the unknown shared pc disappear from Finder as follow:

In my Finder window the Shared Section is missing. Its even checked under Finder>Preferences>Sidebar. Do I need to edit something in my Library. If so, what file? in what folder? I rebooted, reset, etc to no avial.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

the computer is a macbook pro, mac os x 10.6.08 and the ipod touch is ios 6.0.
the problem is that just updated the itunes on the computer and now the ipod won't connect because apparently the itunes on the ipod is not up to date but the iod is telling me that is is up to date, so i can't do a software update.

::Operating Profits = Gross Profits - Total Operating Expenses.
but i have calculated Gross Profits Value & Income value. I am getting problem to find Total Operating Expenses.
In our Balance sheet they maintain "Direct Operating Expenses"
                                                         "General Administration Expenses"
                                                         "Financial Expenses"
                                                         "Depreciation".
To find total operating Expenses what are all i need to add to find it, please forward ur valuble feed back to me.

in the operating expenses you shall not consider the "Financial Expenses", because they are not caused by the operative part of the company.

Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
3) What is your computer specification?
4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)?

How do you manage your iPod? Do you Sync your entire music library, or only selected playlists?

Have you looked at the settings in iTunes. Is music syncing manual or automatic. More info please. I would try removing all restrictions as an initial test.

Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.

Unkown computer showing up on my finder sidebar under "shared"

Hi there,
I have an unkown computer showing up on my finder sidebar under "shared". The name of this shared computer is "technicolor". How can I disconnect and delete it? I suspect it is spyware or something similar as when I unplug the ethernet cable that connects to my modem, I can't connect to this computer. When I do connect it is empty.
OS 10.5.8
Note: I have had Parallels 4 (virtual PC XP) on my mac for a number of years and when that is running it comes up in the sidebar under "shared" but with the name I gave it when set up. So when running both names show.
I would appreciate some direction on how to get rid of this "shared" computer.

Somewhere on the network you are using is a computer with that name. If the network is wifi and it's yours, you should change the password on it immediately. If the network is wifi and it belongs to someone else, then talk to that person or stop using that other person's wifi network.
If you just want to get it out of your sidebar, you can choose to have the Finder window sidebar not show available shares. Go to Finder Preferences->General and un-check CONNECTED SERVERS.
