In "FINDER" how to cluster Folders together within a folder

Within a Folder I have other folders and would like to see them all together at the top.
I have a lot of other unfoldered docs within this main folder.
I was a seeing all my subfolders clustered together at the top.
But then I clicked 'Name' at the columns very top and of course now everything is in A-Z, or Z-A, order and now all my subfolders are also A-Z and so scattered throughout the list and mixed in with my unfoldered docs.
I wouldst like to see them folders all at the top again.
I could do it wonce before, why not now.

A gracious Helpful Solver designation awaits your solution.

Unfortunately for folks like you who want this sort of thing, there's no way to do that. You can arrange by kind (View -> Arrange By -> Kind), which at least groups all the folders together, but generally somewhere in the middle, with different types of files similarly clustered above and below. You could also sort by label, but that would get to be a pain. (Note that anything without a label sorts to the top.) Nothing like the way Windows sorts folders to the top. (Personally, I hate that view in Windows, but that's just me...)
Edit: one other possibility, which I actually do use in one folder... put a space at the beginning of the folder names to make them sort to the top.

  • How can I organize playlists within a folder?

I want to use iTunes to burn an MP3 cd containing a number of albums by one artist.
I name the Folder after the artist, and then create a few of playlists within that folder (into which I import each album.)
But if I name each playlist after the album it contains, the Folder arranges them alphabetically and, for example, "Fourth album" gets placed above "Second album." [F before S.]
And if I name each playlist numerically, it only works to the ninth playlist, eg "9." After that the folder wil place "10." BEFORE "1.!"
What characters can I use to continue my numerically named playlists in order?

    Try 001, 002, 003, etc.

  • How can I sort bookmarks within a folder by date such that this is apllied not only in the library but also on the toolbar?

    Hello,
I have several folders on my firefox toolbar which I use to sort new bookmarks by topic. If I add a new bookmark to a folder it is alwas placed at the bottom (below existing bookmarks) which is somewhat annoying with a increasing number of bookmarks. I would like to have the bookmarks recently added at the top of the folder (above existing bookmarks).
It's no problem to sort them this way within the library. But back at the toolbar everthing remains the same. The only option that seems to work here ist 'sort by name'.
Is there any way to sort the bookmarks by 'date added' such that new bookmarks are placed on top and this is applied also outside the library?
I hope you get my problem!
    Thanks!

I do not think there is a way to do that without add-ons
There are a couple of workarounds I am aware of
    * Add the bookmarks manually in the bookmarks library and choose the position. That is using Show all bookmarks -> open required folder -> select a position and right click -> add new bookmark <br />Rather a slow and clumsy process
    * Sort a folder and copy it. If you sort the folder contents then copy and paste them they remain in that order when pasted.
There are add-ons but I have not tried them. For example
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/simplesort-bookmarks/
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/auto-sort-bookmarks/
There will be others available and take note of the advice to backup bookmarks manaully.

  • How to open all subfolders within a folder

I have a rather large folder of photos with many subfolders and further subfolders. At least a couple hundred folders.
I would like to open them all so I can compare by name looking for duplicates and for size so I can delete the very small ones.
Can someone tell me how to open them all?
    Thanks

This is great! In the off chance anyone else is trying to do this, this is also useful if you have Papers and you want to switch to Mendeley. Papers keeps PDFs all organized by year and then author so the PDFs are all nested in subfolders. If you option-click the triangle next to the Papers folder, it will then show all the PDFs. Select All and then drag over the whole thing into Mendeley. I just imported my entire collection in under a minute. Glad I looked this up!

  • PSE6 - HOw to collect photos together in one folder

I have managed to get photos scattered across several folders, some on my laptop and some on an external hard drive.
I have managed to get them all into one catalogue, but what is the best way to physically move them all into one folder so it canbe backed up?
I already tried to use the file/move command, thinkiing i could move all the photos to a single folder that way, but for some reason it stopped half way through and now many photos are disconnected.
    any help appreciated!

    >But i want to get the photos in one place so I dont have to cart the external drive around. Is the only way to do this to back up the catalogue and then restore it to a new folder on the laptop?
I don't think that there is a single best answer to your question so I recommend that you wait until several people have responded to this question.
1 -- I think that I would want to know more about the previous failure:
Can you identify any specific characteristics of the photo file where it stopped half way on your previous attempt?
Have you attempted to do the Reconnects for the Missing Files?
Do the files that show as Missing actually exist on a hard drive? If yes, are they on the laptop drive or the external drive?
2 -- I would be tempted to do the actual moving of the files using Windows Explorer. However, I would then know that I had potentially many photo files to Reconnect using the PSE Organizer.
3 -- When you have Disconnected Files, those files do not get Backed Up using the PSE Backup command. And since I think that at least some of the files that you show now as Disconnected are files that need to be moved, I rejected the Backup command possibility.
Why? Even though the normal recommendation is against moving with Windows Explorer, both the Bug when dup name occurs and the still unknown reason for your prior failure when attempting the Organizer Move command would make me stay away from using the PSE commands on the photo files. Therefore my consideration of the option 2 to move with Windows Explorer.

  • Links - How to reorder links within a folder. Also, how to make folders open in a tree view?

I'm working on a portal in Sharepoint 2007. It appears that I can only have one set of "Links" on a page, so I am grouping my related links into folders. I'm having two issues with this...
#1. I need to change the order of the links within a folder. When I try to Change Order under the Actions menu, I only get the main list of links, not those within the folder. How can I reorder links within a folder?
#2. When I click a Links folder, all links go away, except for the links within that folder. Is there any way to make the Links list work in a Tree view?
Sorry for the newbie questions, but I've not worked much in Sharepoint and I had this project dropped on me.  :(

  • I have 75 pictures in an event folder. I want to rearrange them from 1 to 75 within the folder.

The numbering system in one of my events folders is not in numerical order. How can I rearange them within the folder?

Files can be arranged by any of the columns that you can view in the Finder's list view, and file names can be arranged alphabetically (so "Image 01", "Image 02", "Image 03" will get sorted in that order). What can happen with numbers is that if leading zeroes aren't included, you'll see "Image 1", then "Image 11", "Image 12", and so on, then "Image 2". You can correct this by adding a zero to each of the images with single-digit values.
First make sure you're in list view, which is the second of the four icons along the top of a Finder window. Then click on the word "Name" in the column heading at the top left of the window, and you'll see the files become arranged alphabetically.
If that's not what you're after, post back with the names of some of the files and we'll see what we can do.

  • How to create nested folders (i.e. a folder within a folder)

I was reading the booklet which came with iWork 08 and noticed (in a screen dump showing how to import images from iPhoto to Pages) a 'twisty' against an iPhoto folder. This (to me) implied that I can have a folder within a folder. i.e. I could have a 'Holidays' folder, then within there one for 'South Africa trip' and another for 'France trip' etc...etc...
I went into iPhoto this morning, but can find no way of doing this. I tried dragging and dropping, but the folders are all at the same level - i.e. the top level.
The help system actually said I could do this - but not how to do it.
Can someone enlighten me please? I'm sure it's something simple!
    Thanks

    Alasdair
It certainly is possible to have nested folders and drag and drop is the way to do it.
IF D&D isn't working, try quit iPhoto and launch it again. Then try once more.

  • How do I find a folder within a folder?

Some of my folders have disappeared. I can search for an e-mail within the folder, and the location lists the correct name of the folder. However, I cannot figure out how to find that folder so I can access it. Is there a way to trace where an e-mail is stored, or see a tree of folders that an e-mail is stored in? I'm using a MAC if if helps.

  • How get iPhoto Library in "Finder" to mirror "Source" folders in iPhoto?

My data was transferred from a PC to my Mac. When the photos from my PC photo software migrated, the Apple Genius (or operating system, iPhoto program, etc.) organized them totally differently from how they were organized on my PC. I was able to create new folders with the apporpriate subfolders and photos in the iPhoto application. In "Finder", though, it's all still organized the wrong way. It creates problems when, for example, I want to attach a photo to an e-mail. I cannot find a particular photo unless I actually look at in iPhoto, the way I reorganized it. So... does anyone know if/how I can get the Pictures part of my Finder to mirror (or as close as possible) the organization I have in the iPhoto application itself. Many thanks!

    Hi TexanMac,
Any albums and folders you make within iPhoto to organize your photos will not be reflected in the iPhoto Library folder in the finder. all the album, folders, books, slideshows etc. are all just info stored in data files.
What is reflected in the finder is your roll structure. The rolls you have within iPhoto are the same in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. If you name your rolls, then they will be easy to find in the Finder.
Take a look at the screenshot and you will see what I mean.
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.
By the way, you can select photos in iPhoto and hit the Mail icon to have them attached to your email. What email client do you use?
You can also control click on a photo within iPhoto and scroll to "show file". this will open a Finder window with your photo selected.

  • How to View Folders First in Finder (a la Windows!?)

Is there a way to configure the finder view so that it is arranged alphabetically, but showing folders before files (like in Windows Explorer)? I can do it with Kind sorting, but apparently not alphabetically.
    Many thanks!

PathFinder is a fantastic Finder replacement, I use it with Finder shut off right after launch. Its flawless.
There actually used to be a frameworks tweak to allow this. I've tried and it doesn't work anymore but if someone wants to have a go at seeing it it can be tweaked to work again here ya go...
For those that are curious here WAS the "tweak" (go to System: Library: Frameworks: ApplicationServices.framework: Versions: A: Frameworks: LaunchServices.framework: Versions: A: Resources. Whew. Within that folder, you’ll see the English.lproj folder. Highlight it, and then select File: Get Info. In the Ownership & Permissions area, click on the Details triangle, click on the lock icon, and then click on the Owner pop-up menu and set it to your user name (enter your password if asked). Leave this window open; you’ll be changing it back in just a minute.
Inside the English.lproj folder is a file named Localized.strings. Drag it onto TextEdit. Find the line that reads "Folder" = "Folder"; and insert a space before the F in the second Folder.)

  • How to alphabetically sort albums and folders within a folder

Much to my dismay, I discovered that iPhoto will not alphabetically sort folders or albums that are within a folder. It will only sort folders and albums (in separate groups) that are at the "root" level beneath the ALBUMS label. I used "iPhoto Folder Import 1.0" to import multiple clip art and stock photo files which resulted in many nested folders and albums that did not stay in alphabetical order (because iPhoto often randomize them when you add them to an existing folder).
Here's how to get around the problem.
Albums: 1. Select all the albums in a folder. 2. Drag the albums to the ALBUMS label so they end up on the root level. 3. Right click on any of the selected albums and choose "Sort Albums." 4. Drag the still selected albums back into their original folder. They should retain their alphabetical order.
Folders: 1. Close all the folders that you want to alphabetize. 2. Follow steps 1-4 above with "folders" in place "albums."
I cannot understand why sorting won't work within folders. I also do not understand why we don't have the option to alphabetically interleave folders and albums. The only way to achieve this is to create folders for just one album, which seems silly.

How do you suggest i resolve the issue of different data types in order to use this function? I have tried a few different ways and have whenever I adjust, it wont run through my sub VI's correctly due to being different data types.
You have to READ THE FILES.  Jeff just showed you how to use a FOR loop to go through the files.  You still need to open the files, read them and then process the data.
I had assumed from CSmith8's original post that the text file processing vi worked.  just drop that vi into the for loop and wire the file name in!
Alternately, attach the code that processes the file and a sample file.  I bet we can show you a thing or two about how to do it cleaner and faster  then point you to the right learning resources so one day you can show us some new tricks.
