In fresh netinstall problem editing rc.conf

Hi, I am installing arch for the first time using the beginner's guide.  When I get up to the "configure your system" part, to edit each file, after editing the rc.conf and doing :wq I get an error saying "No such file or directory"
I have no idea, what I did wrong - any help is welcome.
Thanks
here is my rc.conf

also, is it normal to open up the rc.conf and it is blank?

Nah, that wasn't the problem.
I fixed it and have arch dual booting with win xp now.

  • Problem editing photos in iPhoto 6

    Hi,
I am having a problem editing photos. When I click on a photo to edit I get the following error message:
    Unreadable Files
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library folder.)
    /Users/myusername/Pictures/iPhoto Library2006/Modified/2006/Roll2183/DSCN0164.jpg
I have rebuilt the photo library. I also backed up my iphoto library and reimported the photos. I have not messed with the photo library at all. I import my photos from the camera and generally work with them. I think this has been a problem since upgrading to 6.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    Welcome to the Apple DIscussions:
This could be a file permissions issue:
    Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

  • [solved] Editing makepkg.conf (x86_64)

    Hello everyone,
I just set up my first Arch 64bit-system, so I want get to know its abilities and advantages a bit better for my everyday work.
Before installing any more stuff, I'm actually editing makepkg.conf, because I'd like to have the CPU usage optimzed, though I don't expect any significant performance boost -- I just want to learn about it and then use it. So far I read the specific Wikis Arch, Gentoo, and of course the Arch64 FAQ. -- However, tuning this file would only affect compiling PKGBUILDs from the AUR, or from other sources, because I'll mostly use the precompiled packages as they are, I suppose.
The CPU is a Xeon Kentsfield, looking like an early "quad-core, appearing as a single core" to me:
Wikipedia wrote:Intel released relabeled versions of its quad-core (2x2) Core 2 Quad processor as the Xeon 3200-series (,,,), these models only support single-CPU operation ...
    Four processors are found anyway:
    # cat /proc/cpuinfo
    processor : 0
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz
    physical id : 0
    siblings : 4
    core id : 0
    cpu cores : 4
    processor : 1
    physical id : 0
    siblings : 4
    core id : 2
    cpu cores : 4
    processor : 2
    physical id : 0
    siblings : 4
    core id : 1
    cpu cores : 4
    processor : 3
    physical id : 0
    siblings : 4
    core id : 3
    cpu cores : 4
So I wonder: how would this quad-or-no-quad appear or have to be adressed in a (desktop) system monitor -- as 1, 4 or even 2 (as it also a "2x2") CPUs?
The related section of my makepkg.conf actually reads:
    CARCH="x86_64"
    CHOST="x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu"
    CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
    CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
    #MAKEFLAGS="-j2"
Well, I admit that I'm not sure that I got everything in details. But I guess with this I'd be able to use any PKBGUILD in the AUR (or provide my own that others could use without risk), right?
Last, what about the MAKEFLAGS? The wiki says,
Typically -j2, plus 1 for each additional core/processor is an adequate choice.
If the Xeon is a "real" quad-core (see above), it should rather be
    MAKEFLAGS="-j5"
as in this case there are three additional cores, right?

    I see.
Alternatively, for i686 compiling on this very machine I probably must get to grips with this stuff (if I'm not mixing something up); well, that's a future plan.
    Thanks very much anyway.
Hm, regarding that system monitoring matter, I've just a feeling, different programs could just use different hooks for showing the processor loads. I mean if that Xeon is physically a quad, but "acting" like a single, some could maybe show just 1 CPU, and others 4. -- Since my topic here is mainly about editing makepkg.conf, I'd better discuss this in detail in another thread later, if necessary. (But of course, if somebody has got some information about this, please let me know.)
Seems to me, there's nothing more for me to question here then, so I'll mark this as solved.

  • Problem editing place in Pics

I am having a problem editing the places in the Pictures. It doesn't behave properly. I have a combination of Pictures with Iphone that are geotagged and regular pics also. If I highlight several pictures click the check box to edit place the places are not saved when I exit out of that screen. I like using the Iphone because it already has the geotagged info and would like to extend that info easily to the other pics taken at the same location. With some other pictures I have taken, I try to change the places info like the name, but for some reason I run into the same problem that the info is not saved after I select done and exit out. Anyone know what im doing wrong?

I am not clear on your work flow
To add a "place" to a photo that does not have a "place" select the photo and click on the "i" in the lower right hand corner - click on place and type the place you want, if one you want comes up in the list click on it otherwise click on find on map and wait for the Google map to appear, locate the photo and click assign to photo and done
There is no way to copy locations between photos
There also is an application that will allow you to create a track on your iPhone and then use it to assign locations to photos on your mac automatically - GeoTagLog - http://www.galarina.eu/GeoLogTag/Home.html

  • Problem editing photo's from LR 2.0 in Photoshop

I have a problem editing photo's from LR 2.0 in Photoshop CS4. When I select a photo to edit in PS PS starts up but nothing further happens. This goes for all the different options (in layers, as HDR, etc) except for editing the original photo (in this case a jpeg-file). The option "edit original file" works fine. Help!!

Don't know whether it will fix it, but you should ditch 2.0 and install 2.1 RC (see top of the forum for the link). There were many bugs like this in 2.0 that were fixed in 2.1, so certainly worth a try. If nothing else, you'll have a much smoother running Lightroom.

Yes, both the Beginners guide and the Installation guide excellent.  I studied them (and others) for about two weeks before even downloading the install iso.  Also, I’ve read the Arch Way and it’s for me.
The script that I dug up wasn't just random.  It turned up in a google search when I was looking for more info on setting up LVM partitions.  The first half of that script turned out to be nearly identical to the notes that I had made from reading those guides as well as the LVM guide.
The Beginners and LVM guides are great (!) I learned a lot and I appreciate their attempt to be linear step by step.  I also understand the LVM can’t be placed “inside” the Beginners guide since not everyone will want LVM.
However I ran into a spot of confusion regarding the mounting of the partitions between the Beginners Guide and the LVM guide – and that’s what lead me to the question about the path in that guy’s script (“/etc/mnt”  vs “/mnt/etc”).    Also, the LVM guide seems to indicate editing “/etc/mkinitcpio.conf” (note the path)  at a point BEFORE I run “pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel” and genfstab.
Below are the linear install steps that I attempted.  In summary, I’m not sure about the mounting or when/where to edit mkinitcpio.conf.
Boot the install iso and set up the partitions.
    [All GOOD]
Create physical volume, Vol group and logical vols
    pvcreate /dev/sda2
    vgcreate arch /dev/sda2
    lvcreate -L 1G -n boot arch
    lvcreate -C y -L 4G -n swap arch
    lvcreate -L 100G -n root arch
    lvcreate -L 100G -n home arch
    [All GOOD]
Create file systems and mount logical volumes
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/arch-root
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/arch-boot
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/arch-home
    mkswap /dev/mapper/arch-swap
    mount /dev/mapper/arch-root /mnt
    [All GOOD]
    Here's where my confusion starts:
Beginner's Guide (in "Mount the partitions" section) seems to indicate this way:
    mkdir /mnt/boot
    mkdir /mnt/home
    mount /dev/mapper/arch-home /mnt/home
    mount /dev/mapper/arch-boot /mnt/boot
LVM Guide (in "Create file systems and mount logical volumes") seems to indicate this way:
    mount /dev/mapper/arch-home /home
    mount /dev/mapper/arch-boot /boot
I'm not sure which of the above I need to go with. (Probably just a matter of preference?)
Then the LVM Guide seems to want me to "Edit [/etc/mkinitcpio.conf] and insert lvm2 between block and filesystems"  but how should I access that file at "/etc"?  I think I'd have to run "pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel"  first  but the LVM guide seems to indicate doing this right after I mount the logical volumes - I probably misunderstand something here.  (I can't find it anyway at this point using either mount method above.)
The rest I'll do right out of the beginners guide:
    pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel
swapon /dev/mapper/arch-swap   <<<<<  I suspect I need this here before running genfstab to get the entry in the table
    genfstab -U -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
    nano /mnt/etc/fstab
Then I'll follow the rest of the beginners guide and edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf during the "Create an initial ramdisk environment" step/
(I actually got to the point in the beginners guide where I should be editing the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf after pacstrap but I could not find it and suspect either I didn't mount correctly or messed up the chroot step.)

As these are public forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support,  I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from your post - it's not a good idea to post it unless you like spam email.
The reset link will only show if you have a rescue email address on your account - a rescue email address is not the same as an alternate/secondary email address, they are different addresses/settings on an account.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you won't get the reset option - you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down the page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

    ## Not all architectures require this. But if yours does (you'll know because
    ## this file will be created when you run Apache) then you must ensure that
    ## no two invocations of Apache share the same scoreboard file.
    #ScoreBoardFile "/var/run/apache2runtimestatus"
    ## Server-pool size regulation. Rather than making you guess how many
    ## server processes you need, Apache dynamically adapts to the load it
    ## sees --- that is, it tries to maintain enough server processes to
    ## handle the current load, plus a few spare servers to handle transient
    ## load spikes (e.g., multiple simultaneous requests from a single
    ## Netscape browser).
    ## It does this by periodically checking how many servers are waiting
    ## for a request. If there are fewer than MinSpareServers, it creates
    ## a new spare. If there are more than MaxSpareServers, some of the
    ## spares die off. The default values are probably OK for most sites.
    MinSpareServers 1
    MaxSpareServers 1
    ## Number of servers to start initially --- should be a reasonable ballpark
    ## figure.
    StartServers 1
    ## MaxRequestsPerChild: the number of requests each child process is
    ## allowed to process before the child dies. The child will exit so
    ## as to avoid problems after prolonged use when Apache (and maybe the
    ## libraries it uses) leak memory or other resources. On most systems, this
    ## isn't really needed, but a few (such as Solaris) do have notable leaks
    ## in the libraries. For these platforms, set to something like 10000
    ## or so; a setting of 0 means unlimited.
    ## NOTE: This value does not include keepalive requests after the initial
    ## request per connection. For example, if a child process handles
    ## an initial request and 10 subsequent "keptalive" requests, it
    ## would only count as 1 request towards this limit.
    MaxRequestsPerChild 100000
    ## Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) Support

    ## Please read the file http://httpd.apache.org/docs/dso.html for more
    ## details about the DSO mechanism and run `httpd -l' for the list of already
    ## built-in (statically linked and thus always available) modules in your httpd

    # Settings for hosting different languages.
    # Required modules: mod_mime, mod_negotiation
    # DefaultLanguage and AddLanguage allows you to specify the language of
    # a document. You can then use content negotiation to give a browser a
    # file in a language the user can understand.
    # Specify a default language. This means that all data
    # going out without a specific language tag (see below) will
    # be marked with this one. You probably do NOT want to set
    # this unless you are sure it is correct for all cases.
    # * It is generally better to not mark a page as
    # * being a certain language than marking it with the wrong
    # * language!
    # DefaultLanguage nl
    # Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
    # keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard
    # language code is pl) may wish to use "AddLanguage pl .po" to
    # avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
    # Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
    # the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
    # the two character 'Country' code for its country,
    # E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
    # Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char
    # specifier. There is 'work in progress' to fix this and get
    # the reference data for rfc1766 cleaned up.

    ========HTTPD.CONF==========

I am modifying the correct httpd.conf file on the server, it just doesn't seem to work. - If I put the rewrite rules in the <Directory /> the rewrite works but it adds /Library/WebServer/Documents to the URL.
I also tried putting the rewrite rules in <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> but that did not work either.
mod_rewrite is enabled and running on the server.
I will post the rewrite rules again in the code brackets. Sorry for the long post. - If some one can try them out on their Leopard Server to see if they can get them to work, it would be much appreciated. Again, these work on my Leopard Client but I can't get them to work on Server.
-- The httpd.conf file posted above is just the default conf file found in /private/etc/apache2/

  • Arch64 ati radeon 3870 radeonhd driver. Problem with xorg.conf.

I've got a small problem with my xorg. I won't hide that i'm not a xorg nerd and i've used the automatic xorg tool to generate the xorg.conf. After starting X, the screen goes black and then after ~5 seconds  montior switches to power-saving mode.
    So here we go.
    That's xorg.conf

  • Stacking Problem in pam.conf on Solaris 10 ?

    Hi all,
I have pam.conf with enteries for
    # Default definition for Password management
    # Used when service name is not explicitly mentioned for password management
    *other password required pam_dhkeys.so.1*
    *other password requisite pam_authtok_get.so.1*
    *other password requisite pam_authtok_check.so.1*
    *other password required pam_authtok_store.so.1*
    As per my understanding the
    (I) SPI pam_authtok_get.so.1 is used to get the user credentials from password DB.
(II) SPI pam_authtok_check.so.1* is used to check if the new password supplied is satisfying the password policy on the OS ( by reading values from /etc/default/passwd )
(III) SPI pam_authtok_store.so.1* is used to store the newly entered password to password db.
Please correct me if I am wrong anywhere.
Now I have a requirement thar an application has to be wriiten which will just check that the entered password satisfies the password policies of the OS or not, but it should not update the password DB(should not store the password)
I make the following enteries in my pam.conf
    osPasswdCheck password required pam_dhkeys.so.1
    osPasswdCheck password requisite pam_authtok_get.so.1
    osPasswdCheck password requisite pam_authtok_check.so.1
I removed the entry for pam_authtok_store.so.1 as I dont want to store the but when I run my application it always give error 20 authentication manipulation error.
    please refer (/usr/include/security/pam_appl.h)
I have done all the formalities w.r.t writing a PAM Conversation funtion and the application is returning success when I add the pam_authtok_store.so.1 into the SPI
Please anyone can help me out.Is there is anyother way with which I can use my application just to check password (w.r.t. OS policy) .
I will be really thankful if anybody can provide me with working PAM Modules stack for achieving it.
    Thanks in advcance.
    Regards,
    Rahul.
but I dont want to store it.

Why not just keep the "pam_authtok_store.so.1" line in your pam.conf file and set it to a level of "requisite" or lower? I haven't tried it myself yet, but I've found that in the past when editing this file, completely removing a line rather than giving the PAM stack what it would expect to see with that line being there in some way can also cause problems.

  • Edit pacman.conf without editor

    Hi folks,
I have got a BIG problem. That is what I did:
    I installed a new /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
after that I got an error in pacman, which said that the architecture is unknown or sth
so I inserted "Architecture = x86_64" into pacman.conf and did some updates
after a restart some time later xinit failed to initialize "x" ... probably because my window manager can not load (see following text)
well, now I am left without X and when I try to start vim it says sth like: "error while loading shared libraries gtk-x11-...sth... wrong ELF class ELFCLASS64"
now I tried to install nano via pacman which was successful, but as soon as I try to start nano it says "/usr/bin/nano file or directory not found" (I also tried to install vi with the same result)
Now I am really lost since I can not edit any files, especially pacman.conf to change the architecture, since I guess the origin of my problem is that I did not have a x64 system in first place!? Even though I am sure I have ...
Do you have any idea how to fix my system? I can still use pacman and mount a usb device, if that helps?
    Best,
    Tobias

Please try to give us some more information:
    Do
    ls -l /usr/bin | grep nano
and see if nano is actually present. Also check if "/usr" is mounted
    mount
. If you are unsure, post the output.
Also please provide your pacman.conf so we can see if there's anything wrong there. To get it do
    cat /etc/pacman.conf
. Then place it in the file as noted below.
Note: to provide the output do the following:
    COMMAND > ~/command_output.txt
. Then you can copy those files to a usb drive via
    cp ~/command_output.txt /path/to/usb
This could help us figure out the problem.
You could also look into tools for "editing" a file in the command line. Maybe 'sed' can help there, not so sure myself. Perhaps you can do some kind of
    cat /etc/pacman.conf | *command to replace/remove the Architecture line* > /etc/pacman.conf
Watch out though, ALWAYS make backups, you don't want to screw things up even more.
    Hope this helps.
By the way: You change doesn't look so wrong if I am not mistaken. I wonder how this could screw things up this way?
Oh by the way: If all else fails, boot a live cd, mount your system and edit the files via live cd tools. If you then want to test things you can chroot into your mounted system.

  • Problems with xorg.conf - 3D acceleration

here's my problem... im trying to get the ati drivers to work so i can get beryl and compiz to work from the looks of it. Direct Rendering is disabled. I dont know if i can use glxinfo on the ati drivers. The Video card is an ATI Xpress 200 build into my laptops motherboard.
    [root@myhost ~]$ glxinfo | grep rendering
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
    direct rendering: No
This is how i set everyhing up.. i started by automatically detecting all the settings to xorg.conf then i did the stuff below.
    pacman -S ati-fglrx ati-fglrx-utils
    aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original
this installed well but i still get "Direct Rendering: NO"  i attached my xorg.conf... what changes do i need in order to get Direct Rendering to work and so it supports Beryl/Compiz?

Your xorg.conf is all messed up.
Look in the wiki for how to set it up. i.e. You are calling the vesa driver and the fglrx driver. Look at wiki "fglrx" and "beryl".

  • Problem editing - can see thumbnail, but blank when double click on photo

I just upgraded to iLife 08 and encountered a host of problems. I had about 5000+ photos. Now I suddenly have 7000+. There are a ton of duplicates that I don't know what to do with. Moreover, I can't edit my photos. I've changed the preferences around, but nothing works. When I try to click on the thumbnail to edit the photo, a blank page appears. It looks like I can manipulate it, as when I press rotate, the thumbnail rotates. However, I cannot view anything but the thumbnail. Pls help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    , a blank page appears.
Is the box gray with an ! in the middle or is it white? If it's the latter then there's a permission issue. Sodownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
If it's the former and Terence's recommendation doesn't work you may be looking at starting fresh with a new library and importing the original photos from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Search by category in the custom and advanced search portlets doesn't give correct results. When searching for items in category 'A', the search results page shows files that are in category 'General' as well. How can we solve or work arround this?
