In InDesign CS5 Vector Drop Shadows Flattening at 150dpi

If I have an InDesign Vector Element (Box or Type) with a drop shadow effect, that is not interacting with an image, I am getting 150dpi or under image created for the shadow when flattened (I am exporting a PDF1.3 out of InDesign for the flattening). This is not consistent at all, one machine will do it at 300dpi, so there is definitely a setting. We have tried all the usual suspects, Flattening Settings, Spread Overrides, Export Settings, etc, but we cannot find the control. If an image is put in, which interacts with the shadow, the resulting image from flattening will match the image resolution. Has anyone else seen this issue?

Went through all the settings, including this and they match. Even tried creating another Flattener Preset increasing the Line Art and Text Resolution and the Gradient and Mesh Resolution, and still got the same results.

  • Down-saving CS6 or CC to CS5 breaks vector drop shadows?

My pre-press house cannot use CS6 or CC files. They have not yet upgraded all of their workstations. So, they ask us to save files as CS5 files. When I save CS6 or CC files to CS5 the vector drop shadow effects get converted to embedded raster images. Is there a way to down-save as a CS5 file that keeps these effects? I used to be able to down-save CS5 files to CS4 or CS3 without this issue.
We have to keep using CS5 for some jobs that make use of vector effects. Its really a pain.
    Thanks!

I just discovered if you convert an object with a vector shadow to a SYMBOL in AI CC and then down-save to CS5 from CC the down-saved file retains the vector effects. At that point you can release it from being a symbol and edit it in CS5. Not a perfect work-around but its better than having to rebuild all the effects if you have to down-save to CS5.

  • Graphic Style to give Vector Drop Shadow

Hi all. Hope someone can help please
Im ok with Illustrator but not brilliant. What Im looking for is a Graphic Style that I can just add/load into my CS5 version of Illustrator that when I select it will give me a vector drop shadow under text
I would be able to edit the style to suit my text but struggling to create one from scratch after following write-ups and videos for the last 24hours!
Realise there are easier ways to make drop shadows but I need the drop shadow to be scaleable up to large sizes in a vector format as well as the text so would be my best solution
    Hope someone can help
    Many kind thanks

Hi, thanks so very much for your reply
Im finding it hard to create a "vector" drop shadow like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2lgA-zAzE4
So what I was hoping, is out there in the www there is a Graphic Style I can load into Illustrator and just apply to my text.
Im sure by trial and error I can  edit the Graphic Style. Im am really only looking for a bog standard grey drop shadow.
I really dont want to use Effect - Stylize - Drop Shadow as it looks good, but I need to outline everything and it then needs to be scaleable to be used in large media like banners so need something that is completely vecor rather than raster (I think its called raster, as I said Im ok but not brilliant in Illustrator)
    Many kind thanks

  • Indesign CS6 text drop shadow changes background colour

I have two layers, one for a background image linked to a photoshop document and another layer for text. When i add drop shadow to the text, the background colour goes sort of dark, and the same happens in overprint view whereas with 5.5 it didn't do that. Is there a way to fix this?

Looks like maybe an RGB image with a CMYK transparency blend space applied.

  • Illustrator CS5: missing Drop shadow

    I can not find it?

    Reset the preferences ;-
Rename the folder and then check:-
    Windows Vista or Windows 7
    <startup drive>\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings\en_US*
Note: In Windows XP, the Application Data folder is hidden by default. The same is true for the AppData folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7. To make this folder visible, open Folder Options in Control Panel and click the View tab. In the Advanced Settings pane, select the Show Hidden Files and Folders or Show hidden files, folders, or drives option.

  • Illustrator CS5 drop shadow - blur not rendering correctly

I just got a new computer and have installed Illustrator on it.  This is my first time using the program on this computer.  I created this file on my old computer in Illustrator.  When opening it today, in the newly installed version of CS5, the drop shadow blur effect is not rendering properly.  However, as you can see in the screenshot, one of the words has a proper blur.  Everything else does not!  Anyone know what to do, short of re-installing the whole program?  Red arrow is the problem drop shadow.  Purple arrow is the drop shadow that blurred correctly.

Well it must be something wrong on this new computer, I can't figure out what.  Whenever I do a new iteration of a drop shadow it doesn't render the blur.  For example, the one below- the first "Tune in" is from the original document, created on my other computer.  The second "Tune in" is what happens when I try to alter it in any way, including deleting the old drop shadow and adding a new one.

  • Logo with Drop Shadow on Unwhite Background

This is simplified for this discussion. Imagine a logo that's a yellow circle with a line of red type across the center of the circle slightly wider than it's diameter. Now apply a black drop shadow to the type. I did this in ID CS4 and brought it into Illy, converted it all to outlines and made a few tweaks. All is fine if the logo is on a white background, But if it's not, there is a white box around on the drop shadow where the type is wider that the circle.
Is there such a thing as a vector drop shadow?
In most instances, I will be using this in other ID programs so I might be able to bypass the Illy step and just copy the logo from one ID document to another. But the logo is also being sent out to others to use and their backgrounds might not be white.
    Suggestions?

There is nothing wrong with drawing spot graphics in InDesign. (Why do you think it has tools for doing so?)
I did this in ID CS4 and brought it into Illy
What does "brought it into" mean?
If you copied/pasted, check your InD clipboard prefs. Do you have the option for copying PDF content turned on?
The reason such things work from AI to InD is because InD is importing the PDF content embedded in the AI file (or copied to the clipboard). The same thing works in the opposite direction.
But going either direction, the conversion to PDF "normalizes" the objects that are created using app-specific features. So so-called "live effects" become simpler constructs. The kind of constructs PDF can handle differ with the various versions of PDF, too.
Is there such a thing as a vector drop shadow?
    Of course there is.
The more pertinent question is "Is there such thing as vector transparency?", which is necessary for the soft-edged fuzzy effects which most people mean nowadays when they say "drop shadow." The two shadows above are all vector. The top hard-edged one was created by the Drop Shadow Filter. The soft-edged fuzzy one is a Blend. They were drawn in Illustrator, exported to PDF (without AI editability), and then opened again in AI. They were still all vector objects after the round-trip to PDF.
So can the rasterization of transparency applied to vector objects be postponed until RIP time? (Everything is eventually rasterized—it's a question of when.) Evidently so. Again, the capabilities would differ between different PDF and (I assume) Postscript versions.

  • InDesign CS5 crashes when opened.

InDesign CS5 started dropping my fonts last week and has since become worse as it began to crash while documents were being worked on and now crashes upon opening.
I have uninstalled (including preferences) and reinstalled the whole Creative Suite and it seemed to improve it, but it quickly returned to the same errors and crashed upon opening.
I have closed my Type Client thinking that may be the issue but it hasnt helped at all.
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Using InDesign CS6, why does a drop shadow applied to a text box, cause a photo on the same page to

I thought it was just a screen appearance so I made a pdf and the photo is lighter here too.  I've never had this issue with CS5.5 or earlier.  Drop shadows were able to be applied to one object without affecting others on the page. Is it a bug? Is there a setting I'm missing?  Thanks!

Overprint preview didn't stop the lightening of the photo.
A google search turned up the suggestion to change the transparency blend space to RGB, which worked in InDesign.  When I make the pdf (no color conversion) it looks ok. But when turning on Output Preview in Acrobat, the photo lightens again.  Weird and frustrating - I'm not sure what the final output will look like.
Is Transparency Flattener set at High res an option?
    I appreciate your help!

  • Copy/Paste graphic w/drop shadow to indesign - loses transparency

See above image.. I made a vector version of our company logo in illustrator (all programs referenced are cs5 btw) and it looks great, but when I copy and paste from Illustrator to InDesign, it loses the transparency around the logo. If I place the logo instead, it works fine. The trouble is there are about 16 variations of the logo, and its MUCH easier to copy/paste from one aggregate file instead of having many different logo files to place.
Background on how the logo was created: The inner circle area is multiple different gradient layers (some with transparency masks as well). The white line around the outside is an expanded stroke, and it had a drop shadow effect applied (Stylize menu), which I expanded so it would scale properly when scaling the logo up and down. Here is a link to download the logo: download logo
Q: Is there any way to make InDesign preserve the transparency when I copy and paste?
Would be eternally grateful if someone has a solution that allows me to copy/paste!

I agree with Bob's suggestion to use separate "layer groups" in your logo file for different styles. I also use separate layers inside InDesign to "multi-purpose" company documents with different backgrounds, graphics, and content. But that's the only way I use layers inside InDesign – Not for general placement of image files! I also disagree with ability to copy and paste graphics from Illustrator with drop shadow. Here's an .ai logo which I quickly added Drop Shadow to in Illustrator CS4, and then a Copy and Paste into InDesign CS4 document. Best workflow practice is to 'Place' image files as Bob suggests, linking them from a separate file folder.
For something "quick and dirty" I see no problem with Copy and Paste, but your success may vary based on OS, and CS versions you are using!  Sometimes it is wiser to take a few shortcuts to hit rather than miss that deadline!

  • White box behind transparent images with drop shadow in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10) but not in InDesign CC (v.9)

    Hi all,
Please can you help? No matter what settings I use in my print options in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10), ALL transparent images with a drop shadow are printing with a white box behind the image. If I remove the drop shadow, all prints fine. I know this is an old issue that happens with ID sometimes but I have been lucky enough to never have had it happen to me before! (All images are regular flattened TIFF images with clipping paths).
Also, feathered edges are not printing correctly and are sharp instead of feathered.
When I export the document to IDML and open it up in InDesign CC (v.9) all prints perfectly with no white boxes and feathered edges prints perfectly as well. I have compared all of the print settings (including color management, transparency flattener, etc.) between both versions and they are exactly the same. I am printing to a Xerox color laser printer. Can anyone offer any advice?
    Thank you so much,
    Christine

Okay...false alarm! It turns out that the issue was with my PRINTER settings (the settings you customize after hitting the “Printer” button at the bottom of the Print dialogue box in ID CC. I thought I had triple checked this but it seems there was one setting I missed earlier…adjusting the print brightness seemed to cause the issue. SO GLAD to know it was not InDesign…20 or so sheets/prints later….and thankful to know what was causing the issue! Thank you so much Steve for helping at any rate:) Much appreciated:)

  • Strange InDesign Drop Shadow

    Hi,
I've added a drop shadow to a vector object in InDesign (as you'll see in the attached) but there is this strange thing occurring on the bottom side of it where it's giving  extra drop shadow to on the bottom left half as opposed to running to the full length of the bottom and looking seamless. I've tried playing with the settings but nothing fixes it while still keeping other elements of that drop shadow I like. How can I fix it? Thanks!

Check to be sure there isn't another object behind that one (perhaps the frame for the Mac image extends over that far?), and check the settings with the image selected.
Also check Overprint Preview to be sure this isn't some sort of display anomaly

  • Fading A Drop Shadow - Missing 'Layer Mask Hides Effects' in CS5

I'm using CS5.  I want to create a fading drop shadow on a shape/box. See the attached image below.
In Photoshop, this is easy by doing:
    1) Create shape
    2) Add layer mask to shape layer
    3) Click gradient, set gradient to Multiply, and set gradient colors to white to black
    4) Drag gradient where you want it on the shape.  The drop shadow will actually bleed through the middle of the shape, and not just on the edges, which is unwanted.
    5) Open up layer styles, under Blending Options, select Layer Mask Hides Effects and it will get rid of the drop shadow showing up in the middle of the shape and you will be left with perfect, faded drop shadow on the edges (see below for finished product).
Firework is missing step 5.  There is no Blending Options and there is no Layer Mask Hides Effects.   Or if there is, I have no found them. I am using CS5.  Any ideas how to accomplish this in Fireworks?

Clone the shape. Change the color of the clone to gray and, in the properties panel, change its edge type to feather.  With the clone still selected, choose Commands > Creative > Auto Vector Mask. Select the bottom, left mask type by clicking on its image, and then apply it. In the layers panel, click on the new mask group to select it. Click on the black masking object on the right of the two linked objects to activate the gradient adjustment handle. Shorten and rotate the gradient until you get the effect you want.

  • How do I include a drop shadow effect when I import an Illustrator vector into Edge Animate?

How do I include a drop shadow effect when I import an Illustrator vector into Edge Animate? It should be noted that I also have another effect (an extrude & bevel) applied which does copy over when I paste (or create an SVG and import) into Edge Animate. Any thoughts on why the drop shadow disappears but the extrude & bevel carries over?

Which version of Illustrator are you using?
In earlier versions of Illustrator it is not that easy to apply drop shadows with spot colours.
Another reason why it's always important to tell which version of AI … well …

  • Adding a Drop Shadow to text in InDesign CS6

I have no character styles in my recent installation of Cloud InDesign CS6 and want to know how I import these effects.

Character Styles and Drop Shadow, (an object-level effect), are not related. There is nothing to import.
To apply a drop shadow to text, select (black arrow) the text frame and choose Drop Shadow from the fx menu at the bottom of the Effects panel, (Window > Effects). The Drop Shadow dialog opens where you set the parameters of the effect.
