In iOS 7, apps refresh themselves when switching back to them

I often work with one app and switch to another app, then return to the original.  After upgrading to iOS 7, it seems that apps (or web pages in Safari) now sometimes refresh or reload themselves when I switch back to them rather than simply presenting me with what I had before.  It's not a behavior I like. For instance, say I'm looking at a photo in my photo app Photo Manager Pro.  I switch to another app, then when I come back, Photo Manager Pro seems to reload itself and starts all over at its splash screen, so it takes extra tapping to get back to the picture I was looking at.  And Safari sometimes refreshes web pages when you return to Safari from another app.
It seems to happen sometimes but not others, and I can't figture out the pattern.
I don't think this has to do with the "Background App Refresh" feature as none of these auto-refreshing apps are in the apps list under Settings -> General --> Background App Refresh.
Any help in figuring out what's going on?

This is a problem many and probably all are having with iOS7 "Multitasking."
Here is probably the largest and most helpful thread about it, but it doesn't fix anything: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24582055#24582055

I'm going to guess videos buffer for a while also...
Two possibilities, one is you should close apps on the iPad, the other is your internet speed is not able to handle the demands of a high speed device.
To close apps:   Double click home button, swipe up to close the apps.
To solve internet problem, contact your provider.   Basic internet is not enough for video games and movies.   Your router may be old and slow.

  • Should iphone 4 receive messages when turned off and display them when switched back on

should iphone 4 receive messages when turned off and display them when switched back on

It's up to the cellular carrier, but I believe most (if not all) will enqueue the messages when your iPhone is off.
So generally speaking, a few minutes after you turn your iPhone on, your messages should display.  Similarly, your voicemails would arrive.

  • How to avoid slide rebuild when switching back to Keynote?

We're doing a presentation in which we occasionally Cmd-Tab switch from Keynote to Safari to demonstrate the features of a Web application. Many of our slides use the nice Keynote builds.
When switching back to Keynote, though, the slide being displayed rebuilds instead of simply appearing as it was when switched away. So if we show a slide that fades in three bullet points over 10 seconds, switch to Safari to show the feature we talked about, and then switch back to go on to the next slide, we have to wait for the entire 10-second build again.
We've tried using Spaces instead of Cmd-Tab to switch to Safari, but Keynote seems to grab on to all of the hotkeys. Ctrl-Option-Arrows and Ctrl-Option-Numbers during Keynote playback don't switch spaces, but change slides instead.
One clunky solution we're considering is adding a static (non-built) copy of each slide where we switch to the demo -- that is, we present over the build, then proceed to the copy before switching away. This might work, but if questions come up and we need to switch to Safari during any other slide with a build, we're still coming back to a repeated build.
Is there an option we've missed that prevents re-building the slide when Keynote "gets focus" again?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

I don't think you can go back to the end of a slide with builds - after the builds have finished. So your "clunky" solution, = some kind of similar workaround, may be your only option. I've just worked out another one which might work visually for you, but also "clunky".
The idea is to always go from your slide, wherever you happen to be in your presentation, first to a static slide which looks like a Safari window (made from a screen shot), and from there to real Safari. You can do this easily by adding a hyperlink on all your slides to that one (if you want it on all your slides, put it on the master). When you're done with real Safari you'll come back to the same faux-Safari slide. That's the easy part.
Now, you want to get back to the right place in your presentation. This is more complicated, depending on how many slides you have in all, or at least, slides from which you may want to go demonstrate Safari again. Put hyperlinks on your faux-Safari slide, each one leading to the slide you want to continue from, or even a link to each and every one of your slides. Obviously, this might be unworkable with a huge presentation, but, with a little graphic fiddling, and some presentation practice, it might work.

  • Massive delay when switching back to table

    Hello,
I have a couple of tabs on my shell, the first and main one containing 2 tables, and the tabs have various elements etc on them. In the last 2 weeks when I switch back to my main tab that has the 2 tables on it there is a massive delay around 8 seconds!
This was never there before, if I have my model empty then the delay is only 1 second, but there is no delay when switching between the other tabs, only when switching back to the one with the tables.
I recreated a static table that was similar, with hardcoded data, even with the 2 tables on that example there was an 800ms, which was noticeable and again no delay on the other tabs when switching.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Donnchadh.

    Hi,
So I have traced it down to my dropdown box, when my dropdown box list is bound to a node in my model with 650 items it takes about 6.5 seconds, but if it is bound to a node with only 15-20 items then switching back to the table only takes around 1 second.
What is going on here? Is it re-rendering the page?
    *update
So added this piece of code to the table
    oTable.addDelegate({ onAfterRendering : $.proxy(function(){
            console.log('table rendered');
          }, oTable)});
It is infact rendering the page  twice when switching back to the tab, this happens with the shell and I also tested it with only using a tabstrip and same amount of delay.
Why is this happening? Anyone had a similar issue?

  • Ios 7 apps refresh

Why is it when I am multi-tasking between apps that when going back to an app like safari the page will reload. I was checking out on a web page shopping cart and went to my email for a second and when I came back to safari by double click home button and select safari the page refreshed and I had to start over with the purchase. This also happens when just visiting standard pages.  I have ios 7.02 11a501.
I have noticed others apps doing the same type thing such as Dropbox. When viewing a PDF switch between apps and back the PDF will reload and you are returned to the top of the document. Please help!

I'm getting very irritated by this issue also! It's driving me crazy! Because I'll be playing a game and get interrupted by a phone call or text that I have to respond, and when I come back to the game it refreshed and I lose my life!! In the older iOS versions, I was able to switch between the apps with no problem, and it only refreshed if left unattended for too long! I didn't find a lot of discussions on this so I don't know if apple is going to fix it or not. Maybe they think this is not an issue at all? This is so disappointing to me along with all the other problems that I'm having, I'm seriously considering switching to android.

  • Multitasking on iPod Touch 4G, running iOS 6.1.2, nearly impossible. Opened,  background apps do not seem to stay in memory and must "reload" every time I switch back to them. Also, intense battery drain (imo).

Let's say I'm playing Words with Friends, and also Angry Birds. I may want to go back and forth between the two. When I do so, the app that was in the background needs to reload again. There is no quick access or ability to quickly resume where I left off. And the reloading means that the app restarts from its opening screens...so if I was working on a level, I have to start all over again. And quite often, a game like Angry Birds will lag greatly when I first open it...moving almost in slow-motion.
I don't know if this is typical behavior when playing multiple games, or if I have an issue with my device. I've rebooted and even reset and restored, all to no avail.
There doesn't appear to be as much of an issue if I'm playing one game but also have the music player open, or Safari, Notes, Reminders, etc. Those will resume just fine, though there may be some lag when opening/re-opening them.
So I guess the problem seems to lie within 3rd party apps, and not the apps that are part of the iPod/iOS.
The other problem is battery drain. I do all of my music listening via Bluetooth, so I expect that to have a greater impact than if I were using plugged in headphones, and I have location services turned on. But I have most notifications turned off, all email accounts set to manual and not push, screen brightness turned down and auto brightness turned on, "ask to join networks" turned off, auto-lock is set to 2 minutes but I almost always turn off the screen immediately after setting up my music listening (since I do so at work), volume limit turned on, EQ turned off, sound check turned off,
With these settings, my battery can drain 20% or more within 10-15 minutes of game play. And these are not what I would consider memory intensive games--just Words and Angry Birds.
I've installed (and recently uninstalled) a couple of battery meters from the Apple Store as well--freebies. Carat, Battery Doctor, Battery HD, Battery Magic.
Carat and Battery Doctor seemed to offer the most pertinent and accurate information so the others were uninstalled long ago.
The Accelerate tab in Battery Doctor show the amount of memory in use, and the amount of available memory. The vast majority of the time, the memory in use is approximately 94%. I will occasionally choose to "accelerate" which supposedly frees up memory, but this "bump" lasts only a brief time and I'm not sure it's a great idea.
Even with absolutely nothing open or running, my used memory is generally still above 80%.
Carat, if anyone is familiar with it, shows a J-Score. My J-Score is 17, which means that my performance (according to Carat, anyway) is better than only 17% of the users who have Carat installed. In other words, 83% of people are getting better performance from their devices. It also has "battery hog" and "battery bug" sections. It doesn't detect any hogs or bugs.
I use my iPod Touch in rather limited ways. A typical day consists of approximately 5 hours of music listening via Bluetooth and 30 minutes to 1 hour of playing the aforementioned games. The occasional note and reminder, perhaps a brief check-in with the weather, and that's about it. And wifi is in use only when at home (there is no hotspot at work). Still, I need to charge it every day. I'd be keen to do more with the iPod if I could count on it to last more than a day.
I've read up on multiple forums and blogs for tips on prolonging a battery charge, and believe I've taken everything into account, and applied whatever I could. I've even reset the network settings and try to discharge the battery completely once a month (for supposed battery calibration).
I'm really hoping people can offer some suggestions or comments on whether this is typical behavior or if my battery is going, or even offer some additional tips.
With iOS 7 on the horizon, I'm hoping the upgrade will offer some resolutions (I've read there is better multitasking), but considering how weakly my device performs at this point, I'm not entirely convinced that an iOS upgrade will actually make any improvements.
    Thanks a lot for reading.

No, the app does not have to completely restart. It gets shifted in its open state into storage. Similar to how a computer uses the hard disk when it has insufficient memory.
What complicates things is that sometimes memory does not get returned for reuse when you close an app. Thus yo should periodically double click the Home button and "delete" unnecessary apps from the multitasking dock and power off and then back on the iPod.

  • Background App Refresh updating when turned off

This has got to be wrong.
I just noticed that I had several app being refreshed.   I went into general and checked my setting and it was turned "off".   Check the iTunes update list and sure enough I had 4 apps that were updated.
    It this just me????????

Support cleared up my confusion.   There is a setting for background app refresh and a setting under iTunes & App Store.   I needed to turn off the automatic downloads for updates in the iTunes & App Store settings.

  • Hi upgraded my iphone 5 and now two of my apps keep crashing when I press on them it just goes back to the home screen one is Facebook and the other is my fitbit app.

Hi upgraded my iphone 5 to ios7.1 and now my Facebook and fitbit app won't work it just keeps going back to front screen and suggestions on how I can fix this if so please put answer in simple words. Thanks

    Hello Glenys,
It sounds like you have 2 apps that are not working as expected. I recommend the steps from the following article named:
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1702
These steps will get you started but therea are more if needed:
    Restart the app
Close the app and open it again.
    Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
Update your device software and your apps
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
    Update your apps:
Open the App Store and tap Updates.
If updates are available, tap Update All.
If asked, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.
You might need a Wi-Fi connection to update some apps.
Install another app from the App Store
If your installed app won't open, download and install a free app that isn't on your iOS device. This should reset your Apple ID authorization.
Remember to use the same Apple ID that you used to download the app that you're having issues with.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Tabs refreshing by themselves when switching between apps

Sometimes when I switch between Firefox another app, when I come back to Firefox all my tabs refresh even though I did not close Firefox. How to prevent?

hello jlamoure, i think this might be due to the memory management of your operating system. resources might be moved away from the applications running in the background when they are needed elsewhere, so that may be why firefox is reloading the tabs once you come back...

  • Why is the Camera app so slow when switching modes?

When I switch modes between still-photo and video (or back) in the Camera application, there is a 2-3 second pause while the "iris" appears and disappears. Ok, that's not very long, but when you are in a rush to capture "that moment" it can be all the difference between "great" and "rats!".
I get that an app can take a few seconds to load, but switching camera modes should be nearly instantaneous, shouldnt it? Do other people see the same delay, or is it just me? Are there any known tweaks to improve this delay?
On an iPhone 4 with latest iOS.

I don't know why Apple doesn't fix this problem or even acknowledge it. I have had this problem since 1.1.2. Upgrading through 1.1.3, 1.1.4 and on the 2.1 has not helped. My SMS loading time varies between 3 and 10 seconds. I maintain all my SMS messages deleted (which I should not have to do). Due to lack of support from Apple I purchased a Nokia phone for my son. At least basic phone features work like they should.

  • Why are my apps unchecking themselves when i try to sync them

When i download new apps and try to sync them they uncheck themselves my computer is authorized to use them. how can i get them to stop unchecking hemselves

Maybe the apps are not compatible with iOS 5.  Some other users have discoverd that incompatibility.

  • Why does IOS 7 cause all my apps to restart when I return to them from the background?

Every time I switch applications, the one that was in the background goes through its hoops as if I was just starting it up.  I can't even look at a book without the APP restarting.  This started when I upgraded to IOS 7.

Sounds like an update kink.  Restart your phone.  If that doesn't work then reset all settings.
    Settings>general>reset>reset all settings.
When powering the phone on it will prompt you for your pass code it you have one.  You will need to input your wifi network and password in again as well as your Apple ID information.

  • IOS 6 App Store Crashing when trying to view Purchased apps

i up graded my ipod touch 4th gen to IOS 6 and it won't let me see my apps in the app store and it won't enable my airplay?!?!?!

I'm having the same issue with my iPod Touch 4.  The upgrade process to iOS 6 went pretty smoothly, but when viewing my purchase history, the app thinks for about 30 seconds then crashes back to the home screen.  My iPad 3 takes about 30 seconds, but allows me to view my purchase history.
I probably have somewhere between 250-300 apps in my history.
I didn't have this problem before the upgrade to iOS 6.  Is my iPod Touch 4 just not powerful enough anymore?
Maybe Apple's telling us, "Hey, if you want to easily view and download your purchased apps, do I have a deal for you.  Let me show you this: the new iPod Touch 5 for only $299.  It'll solve all of your problems.  Whadda say, pal?"
