In limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard - stupidly didn't back up

I've got an old-school black MacBook, about four years old now. I never cared enough to upgrade it to Snow Leopard, but now I want Lion. So, I borrowed my parents' five-license Snow Leopard install disc and started off on the journey to upgrade to Snow Leopard, download the App Store update, then download and install Lion. I didn't get far.
First, let me say that I didn't back up my hard drive. Like an idiot. Yes, I know it was stupid, so there's no need to say anything. My previous installs (a few clean re-installs) have gone without a hitch, so I figured I'd trust Apple and just run the installation without backing up. Dumb.
The Snow Leopard installation started fine, but was interrupted when the installer said the install failed. Restart, try again. Booting from the install DVD, things seemed to be going fine a second time around -- picked my language, got to the install set-up screen, picked Macintosh HD as my installation drive. And then things stopped working. The installer said my HD could not be written to and that it needed repair. So I went to Disk Utility to try that. Repair Disk wasn't available, so I clicked Verify Disk. That got interrupted when it said the disk needed to be repaired, after which the Repair Disk button was clickable. Tried to repair, but apparently my HD is screwed beyond the capabilities of Disk Utility.
I tried to reboot the MacBook from the HD, which Disk Utility said still had Leopard running on it. The computer wouldn't boot up. Safe Boot didn't work. So, without any other real options, I thought I'd try my luck by just trying the install again. Booted up from the install DVD, and ran into the same issues. Didn't magically fix itself, of course. So my MacBook is stuck in limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard, won't boot from the HD and won't let me repair the disk when booted from the DVD. What do I do?
I plan to try a couple third-party disk-utility programs tomorrow (8/25/11) to recover the files on my HD. There's not much I care about on there (just some iPhone photos and my resume, really), so doing a clean wipe of the HD and installing Snow Leopard is an option. But I'd of course rather be able to recover my personal files. Is this possible at this point?
Another question I have regarding a clean wipe: If I end up having to clean off the HD and lose all my data, I'll lose the iTunes configuration for my iPhone. Will iTunes be able to import my apps and settings from my phone if I plug it in?

I tried copying a photo and pasting it in another event/group within iPhoto but the paste feature doesn't work. This wasn't an issue with both Leopard and Snow Leopard. Do you have any solutions or tips?

I bought a new MacBook Pro with OsX Lion as operating system. I use iPhoto a lot and when I tried copying a photo then pasting it to another event/group, the 'paste' feature doesn't work. This wasn't the case with Leopard and Snow Leopard where the 'paste' feature worked. What I did was to paste the photo first to the desktop before transferring it to the new event/group. I brought my Mac to the Apple store where I bought it and the technicians were themselves surprised that the 'paste' feature didn't work. Chalked it up to glitches in the Lion os. So how do we fix this? I just find it absurd that a feature that used to work in Snow Leopard has been disabled in Lion, and the user still has to undergo an additional step to make it work, when new technology is supposed to make things easier for users.
Also, hasn't anyone noticed that it takes longer for the computer to boot upon opening?

Instead of copy and paste drag the photo to the new event. Or flag it and use the add flagged photos to selected event command

Running Leopard and Snow Leopard

Hey guys and gals... I recently bought a new macbook pro with snow leopard installed. This is all great, but the program that I use the most (pro tools) only works on leopard (unless of course I want to pay 150 dollars to upgrade my pro tools, which I do not). Is there any way to run leopard and snow leopard just as some people run windows and osx? I would also like to not have to restart my computer every single time I wanted to switch back and forth. ANY help is greatly appreciated!

View Menu in Leopard and Snow Leopard

I've had many Macs but I'm new to the Leopard and Snow Leopard OS. I asumed in the past that if a folder was set to view files as icons or as text, the setting would remain that way unless changed.
Using Snow Leopard in a 17" MacBook Pro, I have my HD set to view folders and fies as icons. I find, however, that if I set another folder to view icons as files and close my HD when I am finished with the folder, when I open the HD again, my icons are no longer there and all the folders and files are displayed as text.
Is there any way I can keep my HD set to folder display?

Install Leopard and Snow Leopard from an external drive?

I have a 120GB ext drive and was curious as to if its possible to install Leopard and Snow Leopard from it if I have the DMG's. I guess my main question is how would I setup formatting in Disk Utility?

Set up two 10GB partitions and a third partition for the rest of the drive on the external drive, use Disk Utility to "Restore" the mounted installer DVD to a 10GB partition on the drive.
Plug the drive into a Mac and hold the option key down during boot. Select the installer you wish to use.

Using USB drive between Leopard and Snow Leopard

I have 2 USB drives that were formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on a Leopard Macbook Pro. I have had no troubles when using these drives between Leopard OS machines however when i try to copy files to them from a Snow Leopard machine an error message appears.
Secondly when i tried to copy files from the USB onto the Snow Leopard (Macbook Pro) only the folders were visible and not their content. When I "Got Info" on the USB via Snow Leopard it showed that data space was being used.
Can anyone tell me if Mac OS Extended is the standard Mac format type then why this might occur and hopefully a solution? I would like to upgrade to Snow Leopard but do not want to lose the data on my external drives formatted on Leopard.

Was the computer that didn't work logged on to the "owner' of the images own account, or were you using a 'guest" log-in, kicks?
If the different computers were set up in a different fashion for such things then it might explain the different behaviour.
Another thing that could prevent a Mac writing to an external drive would be if the external drive itself is formatted with the NTFS file system (common on many windows drives). Unless the mac concerned has additional software installed then it can't write to an NTFS drive. Perhaps the ones that could write have the necessary patches installed?
A final issue may be power. Was this a self powered drive or a bus powered drive? Computers that follow very closely the official USB specs often have trouble powering a "bus powered" drive effectively from a single port. In this case trying a "Y" cable, letting you connect to two USB ports on the same computer, will usually get things working. Some Macs seem better than others in this situation, and even the actual USB port used may make some difference.

Screen sharing between Lion and Snow Leopard

Does anyone know whether it is possible to do Screen Sharing between two Macs where one is using lion and the other Snow Leopard? I use this feature to help my father with his computer problems but am wary about upgrading my machine to Lion without an assurance that it will work across OS's. He is in Europe where I believe Lion a) may not yet have been released and b) think it unlikely anyway that I will be able to encourage him to change something he is already finding difficult (aged 84) having never had to use a computer prior to 3 years ago at my behest.

after reading your post, i thought i'd do the same on my lion machine -- toggle screen sharing off and back on -- only to discover that it was *already* off, although it was positively enabled on the same machine when running snow leopard.
i never disabled it, as i use the feature quite regularly, which is why it never occurred to me to check the sharing settings, because i always leave screen sharing on. but apparently installing lion either caused the setting to revert, or it's possible lion simply installs with screen-sharing off by default. (who knows.)

DVD Sharing issue between Leopard and Snow Leopard

Today started out pretty straight forward.. I was going to finally upgrade to Snow Leopard. Turns out I have a bad optical drive (only reads CD's not DVD's). No problem... I will share the drive off my husbands laptop which is already running snow leopard. Well 4 hours and a whole lot of swearing later... it was still not working. The drive would not mount under devices and it seemed no amount of coaxing would work. I also was not getting the option of choosing a network after I rebooted with the option key (maybe that is MacBook Air only???) when I tried the remote install. I even went so far as to try to share the DVD drive of a windows vista system I have for work.
As a last ditch effort I threw the disk in an old PPC iMac also running 10.5.8 and Viola!!!!!! the disk appeared as it should and all seems to be well for an install. I post this for anyone else who finds themselves in this position... stop banging your head against a wall if the disk is not mounting with DVD/CD sharing. Try to find another leopard machine to use or use a different technique all together. (target disk mode, making an image on usb.. I've seen them, never tried them). Hopefully you won't lose hours tilting and windmills like I did.

This solved my problem.
In Leopard in System Preferences I opened Security. In the Firewall tab I clicked on "Set access for specific services and applications"
Once I had File Sharing (AFP, SMB) added I was able to access my Macpro on my PowerBook G4.

File sharing between Leopard and Snow Leopard

I have a G5 and a Powerbook running the latest version of Leopard and they are both on the same network as a Mac Mini and Macbook both running Snow Leopard. The computers on Snow Leopard have no problem accessing the shared folder on the computers running Leopard but the opposite has not worked. I can't access either the mini or the macbooks shared folder from either my G5 or Powerbook. I set the firewall on all computers to allow all incoming connections to resolve this but have not been successful. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

I couldn't find anything in the system log at all and I tried the appfirewall.log and it isn't there. It could be because the firewall is turned off therefore it isn't logging anything.
I decided to try the system log on the G5 with Leopard running instead and got the following message pop up in the Console immediately after a failed connect:

No screen sharing between Leopard and Snow Leopard

A buddy just bought a new 27 inch iMac after the screen on his old iMac (running Leopard) died. We had no problems screen sharing when he was using the old Mac, but with the new iMac running Snow Leopard, he can screen share with me but I can't screen share with him....at least, iChat says I am sharing my screen with him, but he can't see anything. It must be an issue with Snow Leopard, since when he opened iChat on his MacBook running 10.5, he was immediately able to view my screen.
Any thoughts, anyone? Cheers!!!

To change the Login port for any AIM based name you have to obviously Log out first and then Change the port (SSL might need to be selected first) and then Press Enter to "Set" the port.
This use of the Enter key is the bit that is different to earlier versions of iChat.

Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouches used to work well when the firmware that ran them was at Version 4.2.5 or less.
At least at this level you could access the device via Terminal using Telnet and then access the Command Line Interface (CLI) and "Unbind" SIP from port 5060
Later versions of their Firmware did not allow for a full Unbind of SIP and Video and Audio chats could only be partially successful (about 15 buddies out a list of 50
Of course using UPnP to open ports for iChat 4 helps with the Screen Sharing as the process is an Screen Share with an Audio Chat along side and both have to work/connect.
I am surprised to hear that in iChat 5 that Screen Sharing is not working when Video and Audio chats are.
For this reason I would ask how the ports have been opened in the Thomson device ?
After that I would keen to know if the Thomson Device or the Time Capsule is doing DHCP to the LAN ?

Dreamweaver crashes in Leopard and Snow Leopard

Hey guys, so this issue has been going on for about two weeks now. I am trying to get Dreamweaver running on my computer to start my own site.
I went to adobe.com to try the Photoshop and Dreamweaver trial and installed it to my iMac (3.06GHz, 2GB RAM, OSX10.5.8). The photoshop trial works perfectly and have been using it for about two weeks now. However, every time I try to launch Dreamweaver it bounces in the dock, then the rectangular Dreamweaver Splash comes up, hangs then crashes. Normally the splash rectangle has like initializing... but nothing. Just the blank splash and a crash. I have reinstalled atleast 6 times in one day with no luck (Photoshop is still running great).

I just installed the 10.6.2 update and can report that Dreamweaver hasn't crashed all day. Quite a change since 10.6.1 where it would crash every 5 minutes.

Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server system differences - are they critical

I need to make several virtual machines with MAC OS for QA testing. As only MAC OS Server can be virtualized, does anybody know, will it make a big difference with Desktop version of Snow leopard for testing of antivirus and firewall? The same question is actual for 10.5. Thank you in advance.

Were you ever able to solve this problem. I'm having similar issues since upgrading to snow leopard. Four macs connect to a Windows Server 2003 for shared files. Each user has full permissions & when we "get info" it shows read & write permissions. Two of the computers were running 10.4, two were running 10.5. Everything worked properly until upgrading to snow leopard. Some files let me copy, move, delete. Others either just hang up or we get a "no permission" error. Also getting a "pdf is in use" error, even when the file/folder doesn't contain a pdf. We had our IT rep check the server who said everything is in working order. They don't represent macs any longer but feel that it's a mac problem. I would have to agree since this problem only started after the upgrade, and the one machine that was not upgraded (still running 10.5.8) is not dealing with these problems.
Lastly, I would install 10.5 back on all of the computers if I could, but the leopard disk that came with one of the computers wouldn't work with the 2 machines running 10.4 and I didn't see it available at the apple store. I'll buy it if it's still available, but why wouldn't the disks that I have work?

Leopard and snow leopard licence

Quick question regarding licences for os x 10.5 and os x 10.6.
I'm currently running os x 10.6 and wanted to pass on my os x 10.5 licence, however just wanted to check it's something I can do.
Snow leopard was sold as an 'upgrade' so just wanted to check if it used and required the old os x 10.5 or if it was a totally different operating system?
Basically the question is, do i need to keep my licence for os x 10.5?

From what I've read and tried to interpret, Snow Leopard is an upgrade to Leopard in the sense that Snow Leopard has improved upon the core of Leopard, not in the sense that you are getting a discounted upgrade license.
The [Software License Agreement|http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx106.pdf] reflects the three types of Snow Leopard distributions available, the single user, the family pack, and the discounted up-to-date upgrade from Leopard. So, unless you purchased the Family Pack or the Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard, you purchased the single user Snow Leopard license.
The reason Snow Leopard does not cost as much as other full versions is because it didn't add anything tremendously new. They just rewrote most of the code in cocoa (64-bit).
So, as long as you didn't get Snow Leopard via the up-to-date program, you have a full license to use Snow Leopard regardless of what else you own.
And, as long as the Leopard disk is a retail, single-user license, you can give that away per the conditions of the SLA.
