In Lion Mail is there a way to keep the messages from appearing?

Sometimes I get unsavory images in my Mail that I don't particularly want my children to see if they happen to check the Mail. The Junk filter doesn't necessarily catch all of them. With the new Mail, the images show up when the message is selected, even if only to delete it. If I remember correctly, in the old Mail, there were buttons beside the message-line or heading that allowed the email to be selected without actually opening it up. These could then be deleted without opening the message. Can this still be done in Lion?

u can slide the message viewer all the way over to the RIGHT, thus hiding the message from view, and then delete at will from the expanded left column.

  • Is there a way for preventing the placeholder from appearing if there is not content for it?

I am creating a structure with tags and place holders.  However, not all my entries have all the same information. For example, my first entry has a 3 line address (123 West Street, Suit 23, Lincoln NE 68521) but my second entry only has 2 line address (456 North Street, Lincoln NE 68521).  When imported into my structure, the second address reads 456 North Street, <address2>, Lincoln NE 68521. My question for you is, is there a way for preventing the placeholder from appearing if there is not content for it?

    IJWAA,
A work-around if you don't already use XSLT (to avoid having to) is to not have placeholder text, just use empty tags in your text layout that correspond to your incoming XML structure (any unused by the incoming structure IN ORDER, will be skipped). So long as you don't mind the blank line (rather than left over placeholder copy).
If you had placeholder copy in your text box (<address2> for example) look at it using the story editor window (edit > edit in story editor, or command-y/control-y) so you can see the surrounding tags... style the surrounding tags by selecting them with the cursor and applying character or paragraph styles (with text in between the tags at the time) and then delete only the placeholder text from the middle of the sandwich, leaving the tags in tact. Trying to do this without being in the story editor will not work.
Also, when importing the XML, I believe you'll still need to use "merge content" and "don't import empty white space" as you have been in order to replace placeholder text in any areas you had it.
For situations when you have a mixture of dynamic and static text in the same text block and you are merging data (more so when the placeholder text has been deleted as I've suggested above but the dynamic tags for the possible incoming text are still there), you can use a tag you've created (I call mine "staticText") in your layout to wrap ANY bits of text you don't want to accidentally delete when the surrounding tags get populated or not, using the merge option upon importing your XML. Just be sure never to use "staticText" as an actual tag in your structure or surrounding incoming data. The text contained within staticText tags in your layout will be ignored by incoming data, and won't accidentally get deleted when it's sandwiched between two sets of tags that are dynamically populated when merge content is the import option.
In my example below I'm using brackets/carats with the tag name instead of the color coded tag icon you see in the story editor, also I've used LB here to indicate a regular line break in Indesign and SP a regular space character in indesign:
    [staticText>Name:<staticText][firstName>Abc<firstName][staticText>SP<staticText][lastName>Xyz<firstName][staticText>LB<staticText]
    [staticText>Address:<staticText][address1><address1][staticText>LB<staticText]
    [address2><address2][staticText>LB<staticText]
all other tags on following lines...
This should just leave a blank line for address2 when no data comes in for it. I'm assuming you have line breaks, if not, all the better.

  • Is there a way to keep the screen from lighting up every time an email comes in, but still be able to see the email on the lock screen when you press the home button?

Is there a way to keep the screen from lighting up everytime an email comes in, but still be able to see the email on the lock screen when you press the home button?  This is killing my battery, but also is kinda the whole point of the notification center in my mind.

This is something I've been wondering. I am a bit like you, I like being able to have a glance at emails or Facebook updates without having to log in, and I think it would be great to be able to turn off the notification switching the screen on, especially for emails as I do get a lot, and Facebook, but I somehow doubt it is possible.
I am currently monitoring how much this eats up my battery charge. On a normal day, after an overnight charge, I would probably still have 30%-40% left when I leave work in the evening. Today, I was down to 48% by lunchtime, where I've usually got a good 60-70% left... Might have to turn email notifications off on lock screen until it's possible to have them appearing in the list without flashing me...

  • Is there a way to keep the Nano from auto shutting off?

This is probably a weird question because it doesn't really involve a problem per se. I am a drummer in a band. I am using my iPod 1 GB Nano to play an intro during our live shows and also play segways between songs because it is more reliable than a laptop. Basically each of my sound clips are in their own playlist so that once the clip ends it stops and doesn't go to the next song and I'm not trying stop it while I'm also playing the drums. But within a minute or so of finishing the sound clip the Nano shuts off. When I turn it back on it causes a small popping sound in the PA (which is undesireable). I'm wondering if there is a way to keep the iPOD from shutting off automatically. I haven't been able to find any settings that allow me to prevent it from auto shut off. Any suggestions? And just to clarify, it is not shutting off while playing the sound clip, but usually a minute or so after. So It's not like it is malfunctioning. But there must be some way to keep it from shutting off automatically.

  • Is there a way to keep the screen from turning off

I would like a way to keep my screen from going to sleep while browsing. Sometimes I am still reading the current screen when it dims out. The browser I am hoping to replace with Firefox has this option. Is there a way (option or addon) to do this?

Not possible from within Firefox. You can check to see if your device has a 'Never' option for screen timeout under 'Display' settings in Android settings. I suspect not available though as that would be a hindrance towards battery lifetime.

  • Is there a way to keep the iPhone from checking one address's email?

Meaning this. I have five addresses on my iPhone. When I go into the mail app, I only want it to check one of them for new mail. But every time it checks all five.
Is there any way I can keep it from checking the four without cutting off each account?

No, there's no control of which accounts it will retrieve, except by setting the unwanted accounts to OFF in Settings.

  • In Mail, is there a way to print the list of mail activity in a folder without actually printing each email?

In Mail, is there a way to print the list of mail activity in a folder without actually printing each email?
    Thanks to all.

Actually, I noticed in "More Like This" questions similar to mine.  One of the suggestions worked perfectly.
Command Shift 4 turns the arrow into a target scope.  Use it to take a screen shot of the area you want printed.  Thanks to all.

  • In Mail, is there any way to prevent the ampersand 20 symbol in downloaded attachments?

Long title, but as it suggests, every time I download an attachment in Mail that has a space in the title, Mail puts in %20 to replace the space (ascii symbol for space).  I'd like to prevent this and have attachments stored under the name they are sent.  Any way to do this?

  • Is there a way of stopping the battery from charging?

    Dear Apple Community,
Recently I installed iStat Menus and found that, over the course of this year, my Macbook's charging capacity has dropped 5%. I know this isn't a massive number, but battery performance has become a concern for me. I use my Macbook as a desktop replacement, on the main. It's sitting on a mStand, connected to a large monitor on my desk. I use my Macbook to play games, surf the internet, do work and all that good stuff - basically, I use it for everything. I rarely use the Macbook without it being plugged in. I read on the Apple website that they do not recommend leaving the Macbook on charge permanently and that I should use it on battery at least one a month. As I use my Macbook as a desktop replacement, I don't actually have a lot of opportunity to do this.
My question to you, the community, is: is there a way of stopping the battery from charging, either with the use of an app or a physical device? Ideally, I would love to have my power plugged in BUT only used when the battery drops below 10%. Is this possible with an app?
On the other hand, am I just worrying about nothing? Will my battery be damaged further if I leave the Macbook charging permanently?
    Thanks for your help!
    Jeremy Reid

Ideally, I would love to have my power plugged in BUT only used when the battery drops below 10%. Is this possible with an app?
The charging characteristics are handled in firmware.  There is no app that would be able to do this.  You actually would not want to do this anyway.  Regularly discharging your battery to 10% will greatly decrease the life of your battery.  While it is true that you should not use your system exclusively plugged in, allowing it to run on battery a few hours a week should be fine.  Letting the battery regularly run down to (or below) 10% will cause you to use up cycles more quickly than is necessary (thereby reducing the life of your battery).  It's really a only a matter of disconnecting your Magsafe connector once in a while.
Leaving it plugged in does not result in it being charged "permanently".  It will charge until it is full and then charging will stop.  It will only begin recharging when it reaches about 95%.

  • Is there any way to prevent the OS from querying the Superdrive when start

Just a random question. Whenever my MacBook Pro starts up (either from sleep or a complete/fresh start, the OS queries the drive slot to see if there is a disc present. While this may be normal behavior, it seems to slow down the start up process. (I rarely ever have a disc in the drive). Just curious if this, in fact, normal, or if there's something awry.

Save all the photos from your Droid into a folder on your computer.
Connect your device to your computer. On iTunes left Pane, select iPhone under 'Devices'; then on the right Pane, select PHOTO tab.  Make sure Sync Photo box is checked, and "from" box selected the folder that has Droid's photos.  Then click the SYNC or APPLY button on the lower right window.
