  • Receiving texts in Spanish saying a session was started recently - are these legitimate and how do I make them stop?

Once or more every day (typically overnight) I receive a text saying, "Recientemente se inici sesi n en tu cuenta desde Firefox on Windows." Ignoring the grammatical errors/misspellings, it roughly translates to your Firefox account was recently logged into/a session was started. Each time the message is from short code 792273. Is this message legitimately from Firefox? If so, how do I get my number removed from whatever account it's been applied to in error?

I never received such a message myself. If there are any links on it,

If you didn't configure Windows Phone backup option or use VZW Backup Assistant then all is lost.
If you did go with Windows Phone native backup and you use an Outlook account you should find your photos and videos on OneDrive.  I'm not sure how much VZW Backup Assistant backs up but you would need to start a restore from that software and see what's preserved.
With any OS installs/updates a backup is always best to first.

  • What are these files that keep appearing on my desktop and how can I stop them from showing up?

Ever since I've upgraded to OS X Mavericks, I've had these strange files show up on my desktop. The trouble is that they show up even a little while after I delete them. Here's a few examples:

    IMG00062-20120927-2351.jpg.part
I've done a few virus scans, but they showed no viruses. Why are these files always popping up and how can I prevent them from appearing on my desktop again?

You need to delete Bitdefender from your Mac. It will cause you nothing but problems.

The best way to prevent malware from being installed on your Mac is to enable Gatekeeper.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Make sure either Mac App Store or Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

  • What are theses files for?

I recently backed up my iTunes music to an external hard drive. I'm getting rid of my old desktop PC and bought a PC laptop. I had (on the old desktop PC) all the music stored under documents>my music.
When I went to sort through the "My Music" folder, that holds all my iTunes music... I found music seperate of a file named "iTunes." Why is this?
Files named:iTunes Library (date).itl I see it says iTunes Database file but what does .itl mean? Do I need that file? I understand it holds data but is it old data I don't need or data that will be useful when I transfered my music to the new computer?
What are the "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" and "iTunes Music Library.xml?"
The reason I'm asking these questions has to do with the fact that I am getting so many duplicates into my new iTunes library.

Yes you need them. The ITL file holds all the organizational information about your library, including playlist and rating information.
Your iTunes library can reference music in any accessible location. It is not necessary for the tracks to be in your iTunes Music folder, although having them there does offer a few advantages.
If you are getting duplicates, it is possible that you have set iTunes to make copies in the iTunes Music folder, and you still have an original outside that folder. Is that what is happening?

  • Let's play what are these files? . . . . .

The first file that appeared a month or so ago was:
    .Archived_Directories
that showed up in the "items to be copied" in Carbon Copy Cloner that stops the process, unless deleted from the list prior to archiving or ignored when the error pops up.
    The second is:
    c/\libSRTP_log.txt
that popped up within the past couple of weeks.
Anyone know what these are and why they are?
    Thanks . . . .

My problem started when I did the 11.2.3 updater, nothing works as it did in 11.2.1. The big deal was that the updater altered the database so you couldn't revert. That's what the 11.3.0/1 did and M$ knows it and is saying to uninstall and revert when they know you can't. It's called forced upgrading.
I never knew it had an auto-crash reporter, because before the 11.2.3 updater and since May of 1995, it never crashed. One corrupt DB, but I had a backup. But now, ever since the 11.2.3 update I have been limping along. I was offered a version of the 11.3.1 updater by M$ after they pulled it and I declined. I only Beta Test for Apple. I do have the 11.3.0 though and once I get everything backed up I just might try it. I might try to snag the 11.3.1 and see what it does, but . . . .
I was praying that the 11.3.0/1 would fix all this, since I'm sending at least 3-5 error reports a day, I thought maybe this info was getting to them.
Nope. No such luck from what I am reading and the replies to my "looking for the Account DB" posts. Others are looking to revert also and want to know how I'm doing it and if it's working. I'm rebuilding the whole thing in another pure OS 10.4.8 install and recreating a new DB that will work in 11.2.1. All I need is to find the Account Database and I'm home free. All the Sigs, Contacts, and Rules are moved over and well. The mail is going slowly, since you can't move a folder that has a folder in it. But, no biggy, it'll take a tad longer. I'm sure that by Monday I'll be back in 11.2.1 and all will be well.

You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash in Mac OS X
Last Modified on: April 14, 2006
    Article: 106272
In Mac OS X, each user account has a separate, invisible Trash folder that is in the home folder. When you view contents of the Trash, you see only items you placed there and not the Trash folder of any other accounts. If other writable volumes are present, you may also have individual Trash folders on these volumes.
    How to delete a file

    1. Drag an item's icon to the Trash (in the Dock), or select the item and press Command-Delete.
    2. Choose Empty Trash from the Finder menu.
Tip: If you're trying to delete a file that wasn't completely downloaded or copied, check out this document.
Tip: In Mac OS X 10.3 Panther or later, you can securely delete items by choosing Secure Empty Trash from the Finder menu.
If you change your mind about deleting the item before you choose Empty Trash:
    1. Click the Trash icon in the dock.
    2. Drag the item out of the Trash.
If you can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash
For example, this message might appear when you try to empty the Trash: "The operation could not be completed because the item '(item name)' is locked."
First, try holding the Option key as you choose Empty Trash from the Finder's File menu.
Otherwise, you can check for these conditions:
    ▪ Is the file locked?

If files are locked, unlock them before deleting or delete using the tips in the "Deleting locked files" section below. Also, see Mac OS X: Unable to Move, Unlock, Modify, or Copy an Item .

    ▪ Do you have correct permissions to modify the file?

Every file and folder in Mac OS X has some permission settings to help define what you or other users can do with the file or folder, for example whether you may modify it or not. If see an alert box with a message that says you do not have "sufficient" privilege or permission, see the tips in the "Emptying the Trash" section of "Mac OS X: Troubleshooting Permissions Issues".

    ▪ Does the file or volume have special characters?

Usually, Mac OS X can delete files whose names contain special characters, but sometimes you might need to follow this advice.

    1. Note the name of the volume which the files are being deleted from. If you are not sure of the item's location, you can verify that by selecting it then choosing Show Info from the File menu. If the name of the volume contains any special ASCII characters, such as a bullet or trademark character, temporarily rename the volume so that it does not contain these characters.

Example: If you cannot delete files from a volume named "·Dox", rename the volume to "Dox". After the Trash is empty, restore the volume's original name as desired.

    2. Examine the name of the files or folders you cannot delete. They should not contain a solidus ("slash", "/") character or any other special ASCII character such as a trademark, quotation mark, or copyright symbol. If the file does, remove the special character or slash from its name, then delete it.

Example: If you cannot delete a file named "Things/Stuff·", rename the file to just "t", then delete it.
    Deleting locked files
Locked files can easily be deleted if you press Shift-Option or Option key combination while emptying the Trash (in Mac OS X 10.1 and later). For Mac OS X versions 10.0 to 10.0.4, use Show Info to deselect the item's Locked checkbox.
If you still cannot delete the item, start up your computer from the Mac OS X CD-ROM and choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu of the first screen. Use Disk Utility to verify and, if necessary, repair your disk.
Tip: When started up from CD, do not click Continue. Disk Utility is only available in the first screen. If you click Continue, restart the computer from the CD.
If a file can't be unlocked, you may not have permission to unlock it. See "Mac OS X: Troubleshooting Permissions Issues" to learn how to get write permissions.
If the issue persists, use Disk Utility's Repair Permissions feature to check your Mac OS X volume. For Mac OS X 10.1.5 only, download and use Repair Privileges Utility 1.1 instead.
Advanced tip about deleting locked files
If there are several locked files in the Trash, you can unlock them all at the same time at the command line. Follow these steps:
    1. Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities.

Type: chflags -R nouchg
Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.

    2. Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.
    3. Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.
    4. Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window.
Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.

    5. Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.
    6. Empty the Trash.
If the Trash does not empty or if you see a message in Terminal that says "usage: chflags [-R [-H | -L | -P]] flags file..." you most likely did not type the text in step 2 as indicated or did not leave a space. Repeat the steps if this happens.

  • What are these files?

I recently ran DiskWarrior. It found over 300 files that were "unlinked". I took that to mean they were "alias" files. That was no big deal since I've been doing a bit of housecleaning.
The REAL mystery was where they were found.
They were in a hidden directory called 'sbin' which was located one level down on my system disk.
I fired up File Buddy and discovered a whole bunch of hidden files and directories in the same vicinity. They are ALL unix-style stuff such as 'var', 'usr', 'man', etc.
As far as I can recall, I've never loaded X onto this disk. So where did these files come from? Is it safe to toss them out?
    Gary

/sbin contains binary programs, mostly system administrative tools and utilities.  Ordinarily, these will ONLY be available to user=root and no other users nor groups will have permission to run these or do anything with or to them.  That's the thing that makes it different from /bin which may contain programs that can be run as regular users or software specific users.  Since /sbin programs and code can only be used by root,  it is not even included in any other users path since they have no need to use anything there, nor the permissions to do so anyway.
This is a bit dated now, but still basically applies - http://osxdaily.com/2007/03/30/mac-os-x-directory-structure-explained/
Keep in mind that at its core, OS X is a UNIX operating system.
