victor,
You said 'if the download deosn't work'. Does that mean it didn't work for you?
What happens when you try to download the updater? You were trying to download the Windows version and not the Mac one?
You can't buy the cd anywhere, they just come supplied with iPods, and will more than likely contain an out of date software version in any case.

  • Why is my ipod frozen on the apple logo? Will I need to do a restore?

All I did was turn it off, it had full battery wasnt frozen or anything. I now, when pressing the home and on/off button at the top get the apple logo for about 5 seconds then it goes blank, and I have repeated this many times, yet no luck on getting it to work, just black screen or apple logo : (
itunes tells me I need to do a restore, if I do a restore, will all my photos and apps be deleted? I'm not too worried about the songs as I have them on my computer here, available.
Also, how I do back my stuff up. I currently have no control to do anything on the iPod Touch. I have the latest software installed on my iPod.

If your device is recognized in iTunes again, backup manually by right clicking on it in the device list and choosing backup.
Your backup folder is located here, if you did back up your computer, just copy the backup folder to the same place again and use it to restore your ipod.

  • IPod Restore Error 1429

After updating to iTunes 7.0.2, now unable to update songs to iPod click wheel (40GB). After repeated 5 R's, all RESTORE attempts eventually end with "iPod unable to restore due to error (1429)."
    - Battery appears to be charging and holding charge--no issues
    - Attempted RESTORE actions using USB 2.0 and Firewire cables directly connected to iMac--same results
Thanks for any suggestions or insights to remedy this problem.
    iMac G5 (1.8 GHz, 1GB RAM)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iTunes 7.0.2; iPod Software Version 3.1.1

Firstly, sorry for my poor English, but I would like to share with you my experience, and hope that it may helps you.
Since the release and update of iTunes 7, I have not faced any problem, but I heard a lot of articles from this forum about the errors 1417, 1418, 1428 and 50 etc. I could not make any suggestion and find a solution about it, all I could do is to copy some threads from some successful cases mentioned on this forum.
Until yesterday, I finally received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
    1. A window based PC
    2. A Mac computer
    3. An USB iPod cable
    4. A Firewire iPod cable
    5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
    How to reset iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode
    Putting iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”, after a few seconds, an Error message pop-up with Error Message 1417, the sign that I have been waiting for quite sometime.
I ejected the iPod and the screen immediately showed a folder exclamation mark (a sign indicating a corrupted or a failure iPod OS). I am forced to put the iPod into disk mode again, connected with the Mac computer and open the Disk Utility
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
It managed to complete the Restore process, and started to sync with the iTunes. However, it got stuck at the song no.238 from the total of 2000. I left it for an hour, but with no process, instead the iPod became “Hot” and the iTunes showed an Error message of 1428. I ejected the iPod from my Mac computer, the iPod’s screen turn to show the famous killer icon;“The Sad iPod“.
This time it was totally dead, even failed to put it into Disk Mode and non of the computer could recognize it. Sigh, I hated to do it but I knew that I must did the following:-
Holding the iPod in my Palm, and hitting it on a surface of a Sofa with 5 attempts.
Did not surprise me, the iPod turned on and it showed the Language Menu on the screen. So, I put it into Disk Mode and connected with my window PC.
The PC showed a sign and indicated that an USB device had been connected with it. I opened the iTunes and did a Restore there.
However, an Error Message 50 showed up, but I were not worried about it, connected it back with my Mac computer with it in Disk Mode. As expected the iTunes opened and allowed me to do a Restore there.
This time it managed to complete the process and a window of register pop up. After the completed the process, the iPod started to sync with the iTunes again, which finally managed to complete the process.
I left it connecting with the AC charger overnight. In the next morning, I switched it on and have a play with it, I am so glad as it is working like a charm.
From the above experience, I would like to share it with the user the following:-
    1. It always better to charge with an ac charger instead of the computer, as when an iPod carrying with very low battery, it may not able to get charge from a computer
    2. Try to connect the iPod with a computer, switching between USB and Firewire
    3. Try to format an iPod with HD problem, with a different kind of computer e.g. Mac or PC, as the formats are totally different, the way it formats may able to solve the bad sectors on the HD
    4. It may get better chance to get your iPod recognized, if you put it in Disk Mode
I hope the following works in your case as I did.

  • Do I need a new iPod?

I've had some issues. On Thursday my iPod skipped a song so I did a backup and restore. I had done this two or three weeks ago. Last night it crashed in a Skype call when 20% notice popped up. It froze on the blue screen for log in of Skype when I tried to reopen. It would darken slightly but not shut off. Not when I hit the power button or hit home button. Only assistive touch would work. I had to back up and restore for it to work again. It may be on the apps part though, because when the apps were reinstalling, Skype was com.skype. I deleted it from iTunes and my device. And today, I had an audio file playing in a Tumblr post, went to Kik, double tapped home in assistive touch and paused it. As I was typing, voice control kept opening. Then my music began to play and fast foward like it was being held. I hit the home button (normal as it does work) to see if it was that then went to settings and turned assistive off then on. The one who I was talking to said it had happened to their iPod when they were in humid weather. It's not humid where I live so I doubt that is what caused it. It's fine for now (has been about fifteen minutes but I plan to do a back up and restore.
Do I need a new iPod or is there a way to fix these issues?

Are the problems you experience significant?
If they are minor, you always have the option to continue using the device until problems of a more significant matter occur. Once that were to happen, if it happens, a hard reset could be used to restore to a back up point. iCloud can also be used to back up your device on a regular basis without you having to worry about doing it manually. Once your device is plugged into a power source and connected to wifi (maybe at the end of the day) it backs up automatically.

  • IPod restored, won't go past "Connect to iTunes"

After attempting to update my software yesterday, I was told my iPod needed to be restored. Fine, whatever, it's happened before, it ticked me off but the stuff from my iTunes wasn't deleted so I figured I can just re-upload everything. On the iPod I go through the questions, country, language, etc., when it gets to the page asking if I want to set it up as a new iPod, restore from the Cloud, or restore from iTunes. I pick "restore from iTunes". I plug it in to the computer, and I see that it's loading everything - pictures, apps, etc. Great. When it's all done loading (without the iPod becoming unplugged), however, nothing happens. The iPod doesn't do anything. No new page, no prompt, no home page, nothing. This is made worse by the fact that my home button is broken; before the iPod was restored, I used the on-screen home button to get to the home page. But there's no options page now, because it won't let me get past "Connect to iTunes". Now that everything has been loading, nothing happens when I re-connect the iPod to iTunes. How do I get past this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it say place in recovery mode use one of these programs instead of the buttons
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    For MAC or PC
      The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Need Help - My iPod can not detect on PC and can not be Formated

    Dear All,
    I really need your help..
My Classic iPod 120 GB suddenly got hang when playing a song, then I tried to restart it with pressing SELECT+MENU together as usual. After that, all songs were not detected on my iPod, but when I checked the size on the Setting>About, all songs were marked as Other, not as Audio.
After that, I want to format+restore my iPod on my PC, but when the Format got started, my PC suddenly hang (this was because there's a problem on my PC's HDD, but now thanks God it's already been settled). When I tried to format it once again, it got stuck for very long time just when I right-clicked the iPod on "My Computer", and when I checked checked the size on the Setting>About, it mentioned 0 KB free and 0 kb Used . When I tried to opened in iTunes, it did not detected and iTunes got hang, even after I re-installed it and use the newest version.
Is there anyway to save my iPod???
    Thank you for the attention,
    Rio

    Hi Rio,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPod is not detected and iTunes is unresponsive when you connect it, I recommend starting with the troubleshooting steps in this article:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1363
Once your iPod is recognized by iTunes, see this article for the steps to restore your iPod:

  • Why does the ipod "restore" get stuck ???

everything was working fine until I updated iTunes to version 7.5
now when I start iTunes and attach my iPod, it tells me I need to do a restore
so I do and it never gets to the point where it copies the songs from iTunes to the iPod ???
i am going around in circle (and getting dizzy)...any suggestions, folks ?

Hey iPod touch users 101, Have you done trouble shooting 101? (couldn't resist, the 101 thing just screaming to be done, anyway...) Most often the little switch inside the headphone port gets stuck open, so your iPod thinks the headphone jack is still pulled in. Try looking the port with your iPod turned off, do you see anything, pocket lint is most often the culprit. If you see something attempted to blow it out, or use a probe to carefully remove the foreign debris. If that does not work, or you do not see anything, try quickly plugging / unplugging the headphone jack several times about 12 times, free the switch, if contacts are corroded this action should clean them. Check for foreign debris again, may need to repeat this action. Hopefully this solves your issue. You can also try resetting, press and hold the power and home buttons together until the Apple logo appears then release both buttons, or go into Settings>General>Reset, then tap Reset All Settings, but I think from what you have described you problem is hardware not software. If problem continues, contact your Apple store or the Apple Genius Bar, and set up an appointment to have your iPod evaluated. Good luck, Cheers.

  • Ipod restores after syncing

I have a beloved Ipod Classic.  I recently installed a new computer, and brought over my itunes files to that computer. When I connected my Ipod to sync the music onto it, it said I needed to restore the Ipod, then the circle of **** began.
Now, when I plug in my ipod, I sync it, and when I click to eject, the ipod gets frozen on the "Okay to Disconnect" screen, then restarts itself after a minute, with no music on it. I then tried to click restore again, the Ipod restores, then Itunes says "Itunes has detected an Ipod in Recovery Mode. You must restore this Ipod before it can be used with Itunes". I restore, and the same thing happens!
Please help! I brought this to apple yesterday, and they barely looked at it and just offered me to fix it for $130!

If the On This iPod tab shows a list of songs, then they are being synced to the iPod.  Not being able to play them there (from that tab in iTunes) is normal, if you use automatic syncing. The list is probably grayed out.
I'm not sure why the songs to not appear when the iPod is being used.
Try this test.  Do a Restore again.  If it asks if you want to sync your library to the iPod during thre Restore process, decline doing so.  Also, show the iTunes sidebar, so that iTunes operates like it did before this version.  From the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  You can change that back later.
Select the iPod in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  On the Summary tab, check the box for Manually manage music and videos, if it is not already.  Apply this change, if needed.
In the sidebar, "drop down" the iPod's content list and select Music there.  To the right, is the list of songs on the iPod, which should be empty at the moment.  NOTE:  This is equivalent to the "On This iPod" tab.
Go to the iTunes Music library in the sidebar.  Using the manual method to load the iPod, drag a small number of songs from the Music library to the iPod.  When you go back to Music under the iPod, you should see those songs on the iPod's Music list.  The list should no longer be grayed out, although you still may not be able to play the songs from there (in iTunes).
Now, try the things that did not work before...  Eject and disconnect the iPod, and see if those songs appear on the iPod and are playable.

Your Touch is working correctly. Currently, without unsupported third party hacks, the Touch has NO disc mode. It will only show up in iTunes.
how do i put programes and games in my ipod touch
Right now, you don't. The SDK is scheduled to be released in Feburary. Then developers will be able to write programs that will be loadable.

While trying to update my iPhone 4 to iOs6 it froze on the connect to itunes screen and i needed to do a restore. But it restored my phone to january 2011 even though i just backed my phone to my laptop up 2 weeks ago. I still have all my contacts but i lost a lot of apps and text messages. Is there any way to make it restore to my most recent back up?

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.

  • If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use?

    Hello,
I have a database 11.1.0.7 with 8TB. Block change tracking is enabled.
At the weekend I take level 0 backup and during the week level 1 cumulative.
For some weeks the level 0 backup is failing, so I only have level 1 cumulative backups taken every week day with a 4 weeks old level 0 backup.
If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use? Will it be the last level 0 backup with the last level 1 cumulative?
I ask this because grid crontrol tells me that the recent level 1 backups input size is smaller than last week level 1 backups and in between I dont have any level 0 sucessfull backups. Shouldn't the input size of level 1 cumulative increase until the next level 0 backup ?
    The grid reports:

    From http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmvalid.htm
    Validating Backups Before Restoring Them
You can run RESTORE ... VALIDATE to test whether RMAN can restore a specific file or set of files from a backup. RMAN chooses which backups to use.
The database must be mounted or open for this command. You do not have to take datafiles offline when validating the restore of datafiles, because validation of backups of the datafiles only reads the backups and does not affect the production datafiles.
When validating files on disk or tape, RMAN reads all blocks in the backup piece or image copy. RMAN also validates offsite backups. The validation is identical to a real restore operation except that RMAN does not write output files.
You can monitor what RESTORE VALIDATE does.
Make precautions, so you do not damage the production DB!!!

  • IPod restore error AND iTunes won't redownload. HELP.

So I managed to let my battery die completely on my iPod by playing too much scrabble, but when I plugged it into the computer it said that my iPod was in recovery mode and I should restore it. I've tried to restore it 100 times but I get the iPod restore error {14} every time. I know there's another topic about this, but when I went through each and every single step that was offered, I uninstalled my iTunes, and when I went to download it my computer tells me there's something wrong with the setup file and won't allow it through, no matter how low the security settings are. I'm about to lose my mind here. When I plug my iPod into another computer it's not recognized at all. It won't charge with a regular just charge cable, nothing. Save me please.

I fixed the iTunes part. But even after all that I did get it redownloaded, my iPod still doesn't restore.
