In need of a PDF application

I am converting form the PC world to the Mac world and need to find the right application for an iMac to scan multiple pages of a document into a pdf. Any suggestions? I formerly used Adobe Acrobat with my PC. I just wanted to see if there was a better apllication specific to the Mac that would serve the same purpose.

Acrobat IS PDF, but it really depends on what you need.
As stated above, you can print anything to PDF. That might not be the most optimum compression and all, but it is convenient and free.
Most, if not all, scanners come with software that will scan directly to PDF, generally doing OCR to make the text searchable.
Preview can do some PDF manipulation (annotations, combine and remove pages, etc), but If you need the more advanced features of Acrobat, that's likely the best choice. There are some other programs that provide those advanced features, but I've never used them.

The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
Do cleanup.

There is no way to define what points in columns to force break column? Nor create many columns that are useless? How does text to column in Excel, fixed size when we import text, and define where the breaks have columns?

PDF does not contain columns, rows, formats, styles, or other aspects of word processing or spreadsheet file formats.
This is because PDF is decidedly not a word processing or spreadsheet file format or something "like" one of those.
(see ISO 32000 for what PDF "is")
What can optimize the export of PDF page content is to start with a well-formed tagged PDF (ISO 14289-1, PDF/UA-1 compliant).
Without that export is what it is and one performs whatever content cleanup is needed using the native application for the export file (MS Word or Excel).

Is this the product I need to create PDF from a form online?

Hello,
I need to develop an application where the user fills out an online form and a pdf is automatically created and emailed to them, a copy is also archived. Am I looking in the corect place by exploring LiveCycle PDF Generator or am I looking for something else? I am currently using php and MySQL but from the looks of it may be necesary to use XML. This is very new to me so any direction would be much appreciated.

I am in the same boat as Nils. Has anyone made any discoveries on this? I have a call in to a "specialist" at Adobe, but it will be 3-5 days before someone gets back to me. I want to collect the data using PHP/MySQL and then populate a PDF template of some sort to create a print-ready PDF that I can send to my printer.
An example of how we plan on using this is with business cards. We're going to create a business card template PDF with form fields for Name, Title, Phone, Email, etc. and then have the user enter in their information and then create a print-ready PDF we could send to the printer to get printed. I am unclear on which Adobe product would work for this. The pre-sales team at Adobe said we might want to look into InDesign server and LiveCycle. I guess the starting price tag for either of those is $10,000.

Bookmarks not working in multi-document PDF application

Why are bookmarks not working in multi-document PDF application when uploaded to the web? We created a multi-document PDF application. All bookmarks and links work on our systems. All work on the customer's system. They do not work when uploaded to the customers website. Their IT department says its an issue of relative vs. absolute addressing. We've created applications like this for years without running into this issue. Can't find anything about it in Acrobat Help. Can anyone help or lead me to help? Thx much, Sandy

Have you tried opening the file in your browser to see if the bookmarks are working? To open the file in your browser you need to do this:
1) Launch your favorite browser;
2) File >> Open >> Select your pdf file

Show/hide objects/fields in PDF application (form) ...

Hello,
I'm creating a PDF application (form).
The layout is being done in InDesign then the fields/buttons/drop-down boxes are being added in Acrobat Pro.
I have a situation in the application where the user will select an option from a drop-down menu ... let's say the options are "car" and "airplane". (These are just examples.)
when the applicant selects "car" it should only show the following fields ...
Tires
Engine
Fuel Economy
When the applicant selects "airplane" it should only show the following fields ...
Wingspan
Max. Altitude
Seating Capacity
How do I do this? I only want the applicant to see/access the fields that are relevant to the selections they make earlier in the application.
From what I've found online, "Java Script" is what I need to work with ... but I have no idea how that works.
I have no ability to write code from scratch, but I have been successfull at modifiying existing code.
Some examples or some code that I can copy/paste and modify would be great.
Also, where do I go within Acrobat to access/modify the code?

Help needed on upgrading portal application from sp3 to weblogic portal 10

Hi Guys
I have an application which is currently running on BEA Weblogic Portal 8.1 sp3. We need to upgrade our application from 8.1 sp3 to BEA Weblogic 10 version.
(1) Is there any way for upgradation from 8.1 sp3 to portal 10 directly or do I need to upgrade it from sp3 to sp4 and then from sp4 to portal 10? Pls clarify?
(2) How reliable are the BEAs automated scripts for retaining the personalization/customization of my application on sp3 to upgraded version i.e portal 10?
(3) I believe, we do not need to do any coding/design changes/architectural changes into my application for this upgrade.
Any help on this will be highly appreciated

1) I believe only sp4 and later to weblogic 10 is supported (http://www.bea.com/content/news_events/white_papers/BEA_WL_Portal10_ds.pdf)
so yes i think you need to upgrade from sp3 to a later version of the service pack

3) Depends on your application and the features you have used. E.g. I believe Content management has changed between sp3 and what 10 supports.

PDF applications

I can't get my head around where else to ask this so forgive me.
I use excel spreadsheets to assemble costs related to the work I do (construction). On larger jobs I need to present to my customer the data that supports the bill I send. Typically, I will set print area >print > save to pdf from 4 separate sheets. Each resulting pdf document will have 2 to 5 pages. When I email these to the customer I have four attachments -one each for labor, material, subs and misc. Actually there's a fifth sheet which is my invoice that 'pulls' the totals from the other four, tallys and shows a grand total - so there are 5 attachments.
This all seems to cumbersome - as in there must be a simpler way, one involving a pdf application that will let me assemble the '4 files' into one.
I guess the question is two fold .... what would be the pdf application of choice for Mac users and for those of you who can get your head around what it is I am doing, do you see a simpler more elegant way of doing it?

In 10.4 I used a freeware application called PDFLab. It still works for combining PDFs, although some of the other features do not work so well. If you add it by selecting Edit Menu in the PDF button, it will show up in that menu and you can print directly to it. Then when you are done, you just save. There are other utilities that will do that as well.

what do I have to do, to be able to fill in information on an application that is in a PDF file ? I am able to read it,copy it and print it, but maybe because I am 64 years old, for the life of me I can't figure out how to sent this file somewhere in my PC that I can write in the needed information on the application and then print it out!!!! Viewing and printing PDF files
You must have a program on your computer which is capable of viewing and printing PDF files.
Although any viewer works, we recommend using the GhostScript under both Microsoft Windows and Unix systems and the GSView front end under Microsoft Windows. To install GSView you need the GSView and GhostScript for Windows 95/NT program from it's home page. If you have Windows 3.x you can still run this program using the Win32S emulator program available on it's home page. Since there are so many Unix flavors, there is no point in publishing the executable GhostScript in all possible binary formats, you can rather download the source code of the GhostScript program from it's home page and compile it yourself.
You can also use Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view PDF files. To install Acrobat Reader you can download it from it's home page.
In order to make your browser start the viewer automatically you have to set a new MIME type in your browser. If you use Netscape:
In the Options menu choose General Preferences.
Select the folder Helpers.
Click the Create New Type... (

subtype : pdf
Click the OK button.
Fill out pdf for file extensions.
Click radiobutton Launch The Application at Action.

Click the File Types button and then the Add button.

Find your GSView or Acrobat Reader executable file with the Browse button and click OK if found.
Leave Options.
If everything is set up correctly, then (when you click on a link to a PDF file) your browser will dowload the PDF file and start your viewer automatically. From the viewer you can now view and print the file.

Needs a background webdynpro application running at the server side

Hi All,
We have a requirement wherein we need to have an application running all the time at the server side to capture the response coming from a web application. Based on the response that the application receives, it needs to update some backend R/3 tables.
We are thinking of a webdynpro java application.
Can anyone suggest what kind of application needs to be implemented here?
And what would be the steps required to run the application at the server side without calling the application.

This may sound silly to you but I've another doubt which is as follows:
As you mentioned that the external web application will be sending requests to our Web service(in SOAP envelopes) and rest of the functionality can be achieved by our web service.
Actually, we are expecting only responses from the external web application. The thing is that we are sending the requests to the external web applications from our custom webdynpro application and in return the web application will be sending us 2 responses.
First response would be back to our WD java application URL(to the browser in which WD java app is running) which would get the response and display some message based on the response.
Second would be to this web service which you have just suggested. We are having two responses so that even if the browser in which the WD java application is running gets accidentally closed, the response from the external web application must get captured somewhere else and should not get lost in any case.
So, now since we are only expecting the response from the web application and we do not want any requests from the web application to our web service; how is this possible?
I am asking the above question because you have mentioned that the external web application has to request our Web service but we want is only this web service to capture the response coming from the Web application.
Or is it like the web application will send us the response string as request string to our Web Service and the web service will capture these response parameters as request parameters from the web application and do the further processing.
But in that case, we do not want any response to be sent by the Web Service to the external web application.
Please suggest if this is possible.

To convert a PDF file to Word format, you need ExportPDF, Adobe PDF Pack, or Acrobat. Which option you choose depends on whether you need additional features--ExportPDF is the most basic option, and offers the ability to convert to Word, Excel, or RTF.

is it possible to have the same option to view the open applications in the new magic mouse, im a programer and always in need to haver several applications and run between them ... just bought the magic mouse its great loving it , but please insert a command to view all the open applications PLEASE

I will say that when I downloaded the demo the center button didn't work, but a very quick & courteous reply from their tech support suggested:
In terminal, can you try entering this command: "rm ~/Library/Preferences/.MagicalWizard.plist". Then, relaunch MouseWizard.
I did this & now I have center button nirvana! (Mouse Wizard also supports a version of the squeeze button (they call it fourth button) and squeeze/bloat gestures.)
So far so good--it's made me much happier with my magic mouse.
